Richard Parry

Richard Parry has worked as a senior marketing manager in one of the world’s top tech companies, but it wasn't all cocaine parties. His debut novel Night’s Favor and its sequel Night’s Fall have been shortlisted for the Sir Julius Vogel Award “Best Novel” category.

His ever-growing list of novels spans urban fantasy, cyberpunk, and space opera, featuring flawed heroes, sharp dialogue, and a healthy dose of action. His Night’s Champion trilogy follows an alcoholic-turned-werewolf saving the world, while Future Forfeit explores a neon-drenched cyberpunk future where hacking the system is just the start. Meanwhile, Ezeroc Wars throws readers into the deep end of an interstellar war against a swarm species that doesn’t take no for an answer. Across over 20 novels (and counting), Richard delivers stories packed with heart, explosions, and the occasional bad decision.

Richard lives in Wellington with the love of his life, Rae. They have cats, who chase birds. The birds, who have the power of flight, don’t seem to mind.

“Is this how we work? Do we wash our filth into everything we touch?”
A mind blowing experience!
Terrific! Surprisingly edgy and with a twist around every corner, the skilled and talented Richard Parry sets the reader on an unstoppable ride. Authentic, witty and compelling. I love the depth of knowledge in all his works, it makes the surreal become possible & opens our minds to the prospect of becoming trapped - even held hostage...a pleasure to read!
The whole story has a very cinematic feel, and it seems tailor-made for the big screen. If this series doesn’t get made into a movie someone should! Persistently riveting and masterly.
Once again, the author has written a superior novel, worthy of an award. Richard is a rare writer who can handle the challenges of dealing with future technology while touching the human heart, shedding a few tears and becoming emotional. I can’t avoid being pulled into the story, so engrossing and edge of the seat it is. This is a must-read!

We have most of the gang all here and they have most of their real body parts along with some intense modifications.

This is one author I have to be careful when I read in public because he can land a sucker punch and the next thing you are blinking like crazy to keep the tears from running down your face. Part of you realizes that since this is a war for humanity not all of those who fight will be around, doesn’t stop you from feeling that immediate sense of loss when it suddenly blindsides you when a character is just gone. You do mourn for them.

There are many twists and turn as with any Richard Parry book, plenty of flying body parts, lots of snark and an intense sense of family with this dysfunctional bunch. He plots many points on a map and sometimes it takes a while for everything to converge into a singular moment. He mixes the foibles of humans, with the exactness of machines to bring this story to somewhat of a happy for now feel. The losses were great for these battle weary veterans. They saved humanity at a great cost to themselves. They are grabbing a little bit of happiness during this temporary lull in hostilities.

This is a very intense read, with some very touching moments of self sacrifice and redemption.

A Remarkable Story

This is a remarkable story as Parry has managed to breathe life into cyperpunk and in doing so create an entire new series from one book. Basically 1 book was expanded into 5 and In doing so elaborate on what Parry does best create a world where the reader is immersed into a set of character's and be involved in the outcome of their lives.
Mason is an integral main character as despite his jaded past amd his lifestyle we are caught into arguable his redemption and the return of his humanity as all good heroes aught to do when they are called upon to save the day.
So mega corps, amazing powers and tech abound as we witness this heart rendering tale and so are finally brought to an epic conclusion which although takes us to a satisfying conclusion still leaves us wanting more from this brilliant world he has built full of further possibilities

As much as i enjoyed this, as cyperpunk isn't my first choice of story i would be even happier if i knew further stories were on the horizon so a word of warning as you may also be left elated and also bittersweet dissapointed at the same time.

Couldn't wait for this one to come out and I was not disappointed. The author pulled out all the stops. Once I picked it up, I had a devil of a time putting it down. 'Took it to work with me and had to hold my breath to avoid tearing up when we got to . . . you know . . . that part. Had to refrain from cheering a couple of times too.

The blend of human drama and huge fight scenes is not easy to get right, but once again Parry did it. There were at least two particularly good plot twists that I did not see coming. You must read the book to understand it, but know that things are often not what they seem and death isn't always death. But sometimes it is. I like that about these books.

To repeat something I probably say every time I write one of these reviews—If you've come here wondering if Parry's books are worth your time, the answer is yes (of course). But let me encourage you to start at the beginning of this series. You can start here if you want to, but it will mean more to you if you get to know the characters at the inception of their saga.

One thing a reader will quickly notice, aside from the very well written story, is lots of action and a good deal of emotional impact to the reader who is reacting to what is going on. The environment and events are detailed to the point of almost seeming real. The twists and turns in the action keep the reader eagerly moving forward in the story. And I don’t mind saying that I had quite a few tingles up and down my spine as I read some particularly uncomfortable passages.

I think that if the reader enjoys cyberpunk, this series will be very satisfying! The writer is very skilled at his craft, which will be immediately noted from the very beginning all the way through to the end. This is not a quick read – it will draw the reader deep into the book. But it is very well done and won’t fail to leave a lasting impression.

Rules for Villians:
Rule 1: don't assume the good guys are dumber than you. You'll die.
Rule 2: Don't come between friends or lovers. They'll kill you for each other.
Rule 3: Do NOT get in the way of a sentient AI who has fallen in love with her squishy human friends. The minute you thought about it you died.
The villains in this book broke these rules, and let's just say they died in utterly spectacular and satisfying ways. The strength of the bond between these friends is profound, and the story is a rocking rollercoaster ride. I loved it!

No Spoilers from me
Did you like Upgrade? You Need this then.
If you didn’t, go to the beginning and read this series.
Plenty of synopses above, but if you like sci-fi, you liked Terminator and you hated Voldemort then do yourself a favor and read these. The author is fresh, and writes great characters with a fun and twisted story.

Wonderful resolution to the series with a few loose ends to lead to another set of books, I hope. Parry builds his worlds and make you feel you are there. His characters are flawed, human, and believable, even the electric ones. Austin is the villein you love to hate, Sadie is a fierce force unto herself, and Mason is just the best hero there is. Even the supporting characters are clutching at my heart. Can't get enough of this future world. Buy the series, you won't be disappointed.

This final story, an add-on bonus to those of us that worshiped the original “Upgrade” book.
Richard Parry chopped up a single, rather lengthy original story into two parts, polishing an already fantastic book, added three unbelievably fantastic character backstory tales, awesome by themselves, all along the way making it all better, more refined. He ends it giving us so much more with a third part “Chromed Restore”.
Richard is a genius and a madman.
He writes sci-fi poetry and then teases us with possibilities. He could get killed acting that way, but instead he delivers.
He’s concluded this epic adventure with failed mega corporations. Added cyborgs, monsters, enforcers, super soldiers, wormholes (there’s actually a technical term that’s better but I can’t remember what it is), lots of different weapons; energy weapons including awesome orbital strike cannons, good old kinetic fire power, etc., other dimensional mind control freaks, telekenetics, good guys, bad guys (lots and lots of bad guys) and violence. So much violence. It’s all so beautiful.
Did I mention our main protagonist isn’t even on earth? Yeah, he’s running on fumes killing freaks on a different world he got stuck on when he stepped through one of those worm hole thingies or is it thingy’s? Doesn’t matter.
There’s a new bad boy in town. Got all the power and he doesn’t like to share.
He’s crushed the competition, all the other mega corporations and he also wants the girl. THE girl. A very important girl that made me leak out of my eye holes in the original book.
(Richard could have died for that, but we all told him to fix it.)
Right, the bad man, well he’s running things now and no one can stop him and his goon squad or maybe not. ???
There’s still those good guys, one which isn’t enhanced, an illegal human. Yeah it’s illegal to be clean in this cyberspace. Go figure.
Their gonna pick a fight with the biggest dog.
Do yourself a huge favor and read this awesome series. Sometimes bad things happen. It’s not always like you want it to be.
With a bunch of profanity and even more booze, a person could stay half sane in this world or the other one.... Did I mention the violence?
Too much to tell, not enough time and space.
Just read it for yourself. All five books, all practically free. Just skip that Mocha Grande once or twice and you’ll have a classic series.
I mentioned the violence, right?

Megacorps. Cyborgs. AI. Gene-spliced monsters. Syndicate enforcers. Off-grid illegals. Supersoldiers. Rock music. Violence. Einstein-Rosen bridges. Liquor. Enhanced reflexes. Power armor and energy weapons. Full body replacements. Swearing. Mind control. Telekenetics. G-Men. Drugs. Neural links. Orbital cannons
A really enjoyable read. Great characters too. Brilliant 5*.

Megacorps, technological slaves, and high tech weapons. Must be cyberpunk.

This is book three in the series and it is highly recommended that you read them in order. Otherwise, you won't understand the full impact of the "now."

Calling is cyberpunk, though, just doesn't say enough. This is pure SF action at its best. The story is incredibly well written with twists, turns and blind alleys galore, all of which keeps you on your feet just as it does our heroes. The characters are well developed, smart, tough and yet human at the same time. You feel their triumphs and pain as your own for you are truly sucked into the story. Make sure you don't need any sleep because once you start, you will have a heck of a time putting it down. One action packed read that is well worth your time.

Highly recommended for all SF action junkies.

An appropriate continuation of the Chromed Upgrade and Rogue novels.

If you have not read Chromed – Upgrade, and Chromed – Rogue, starting this one is a really bad idea; too many scenes moving too fast to make good sense. Richard Parry’s imagination when it comes to the setting and the technologies and the myriad of characters will leave your brain stuck on WTF. The best way to approach this series is to purchase all three books so you can binge on them while neglecting healthy eating, social media, and fake news about Donald Trump.
The first detailed sex scenario used in a Richard Parry book. Parry does credit the person who walked him through it. She also writes her own steamy scenes, so check out Kim Faulks in case your curiosity is tweaked.
Seriously, though, if any persons reading this have any knowledge related to piracy of Richard Parry books, please pass this information on to Richard. Those responsible should be outed and shamed until they crawl back under their rocks.

Excellent!

An excellent end to the first trilogy. I am very glad that we are not leaving these characters and that there is more to come. I am doubling down on my comparisons to Blade Runner. My only complaint on this third novel is that there was not enough of the top notch dialogue that so engrossed me in the first two books - but what there was was seriously good. Please do not let it be another 4 years for the next trilogy, Mr Parry. I really want to know how Mason, Sadie, Carter, and the rest of the gang actually save future earth and sets it back on track. Destroying the mega corps must surely have been only Step 1!

Cyberpunk is awesome! Who would have known? I didn't. But I took a chance on a new genre and I went back after reading this to buy all of the previous books (#1 was free and #2 was 99 cents so I lucked out) and now I'm reading them because this is just such an awesome series. I deeply regret not having started this series with #1 but I'm glad I read. This author made me cry! I hate to cry. But it was worth it all.

Amazingly fantastic story that rips through every dimension of emotion with a roller coaster thrill ride. No stops, no pauses, just fast paced action from beginning to end. Will this series continue? I certainly hope so!! These characters are so beloved that I need to see what happens with them on their journeys. Brave New world indeed! All of it is massively intriguing.

Never expected to like this series, but I picked it up for a summer in betweener. I could not put it down and absolutely loved it. Parry has a fabulous style and builds characters we love and care for. That’s an art not often seen in a sci-fi/dystopian series. If you like rollicking stories blended with crazy tech, read this

From dystopia to utopia, an engaging tale full of lovable heroes and despicable villains all bound together in a story I found very difficult to put down. Well worth reading.

Almost too happy ending but still pretty awesome cyberpunk adventure! I wish someone would group Chromed books into series on goodreads, very inconvenient to search for each one.
