When Pepper teaches a class at the Southern School of Magic, she expects a run of the mill experience. But when a gaggle of mean teachers invades her classroom, Pepper is on high alert.
These women are nasty and they make no bones about disliking Pepper.
Pepper does her best to stay far away from them, but when one of the witches is murdered in broad daylight, everyone's a suspect, including Rufus Mayes, who's moved back into town.
But Rufus's intentions are honest. At least so it seems. After all, he gave Pepper an amulet that will protect her from evil. When her boyfriend, Axel Reign, discovers what Rufus has given her, he's ticked off and rightly so. Not only that, but Axel drops a bombshell on Pepper regarding their relationship that will change everything.
Can Pepper handle this new revelation in their relationship? She must decide, but there's also a murderer to catch. Can Pepper do both before she becomes the next victim of the Magnolia Cove murderer?
Hey, I’m Amy, I write books for folks who crave laugh-out-loud paranormal mysteries. I help bring humor into readers’ lives. I’ve got a Pharm D in pharmacy, a BA in Creative Writing and a Masters in Life. And when I’m not writing or chasing around two small children (one of which is four going on thirteen), I can be found antique shopping for a great deal, getting my roots touched up (because that’s an every four week job) and figuring out when I can get back to Disney World. If you’re dying to know more about my wacky life, here are three things you don’t know about me. —In college I spent a semester at Marvel Comics working in the X-Men office. —I worked at Carnegie Hall. —I grew up in a barbecue restaurant—literally. My parents owned one. If you want to reach out to me—and I love to hear from readers—you can email me at amyboylesauthor@gmail.com. Happy reading!
I love Pepper, her grandma and cousins. I also love the small town that is just filled with magical people and animals. I loved the story line but I wish Axel and Rufus could get along more since Pepper is caught in between. The thing I don't like about this series is Axel. I just can't warm up to him. Yes Pepper loves him but to me he just seems like he always has to be right and seems to throw up these obstacles and then blames Pepper and make her feel bad. No wonder Pepper feels confused.
On the whole though I do love this series and think it has some great story lines and characters who give me some good laughs and a really entertaining series that is quick and fun to read.
This is a fun read; there are charming and quirky characters, the mystery is well-developed and appropriately paced, and there's magic and humor. Pepper and Axel are adorable with relatable relationship issues, and Grandma Betty is a pip; Rufus, however, tugs at this reader's heartstrings the most. Amy Boyles has a real knack for making a reader truly invest in a story.
Another brilliant sweet tea witches read, Pepper's under goes a new set of challenges in this episode, and your there trying to solve them with her. The sweet tea witches are always funny and Axel depth gets even more deeper. If you haven't gotten started on this series yet, what are you waiting for.
I loved this glimpse into the School of Magic and how the knowledge is passed on. Any time spent with Pepper and her hilarious family is time well spent. The mystery was interesting and kept me guessing. I also enjoyed the growth in Pepper and Axel’s relationship and can’t wait to see how that develops.
"Southern Fortunes" is the tenth book in the "Sweet Tea Witches Mysteries" series by Amy Boyles. This was a wonderful book. Pepper finds herself present for a murder that happens to one of the teachers at the school that Pepper has been teaching a class at. She can't believe it happened right in front of her, and now she has to figure out who is behind it. She also has to deal with her feelings for Axel after he lets her know something about his life. I like how Pepper always figures things out just in time. I always chuckle when the witches have to go somewhere and their way of travel. Amy does such a fantastic job incorporating humor into her stories.
I enjoyed the book. There was one thing that bothered me and is spoiled below about the plot and this books mystery. Looks like a cross over is in the future with the "Ghost Wrangler" series which I haven't read but will check out.
All in all I like this series but...
********* Sorry but can't really review without
SPOILERS
However was disappointed that one character seems to be reverting to former self. A new resident bad guy could have been introduced even though not the evil doer in this book. Though he hasn't ever been THAT evil doer just an extra.
SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT One mistake I can't get a past, "The Book" it was left opened so it could be written in, BUT that wasn't noticed by Betty and the girls when they "borrowed" the book even though Pepper pointed out a " See it's mostly just.... "
Okay, I'm not usually one for spoilers, but this one bothered me a but towards the end, and I feel the need to rant a bit.
So, we all know Axle hates Rufus, and Rufus claims he just wants to protect Pepper, whether out of fascination or friendship or romance, we really don't know. Rufus gives Pepper an amulet that turns out to be a part protection charm and homing beacon, meaning he can follow her (a bit stalkerish, but hey, with as much trouble as she gets into it's understandable).
Axle is understandably upset about this, tells Pepper that Rufus is bad, will never change, and blah blah blah. Well, Pepper, of course, finds out the truth about the amulet after she and Axle catch Rufus "spying". Mind you, this is after Beverly tried to harm or, or whatever in the shop. She goes on to accuse Rufus of never changing, of being evil and a horrible person.
What ticks me off is, how is he a bad person by trying to take care of her? Yeah, he wasn't up front and honest about the charm, but how often has Axle put Pepper off with half truths and omitted secrets until the very end? Or did things that purposely ticked her off that he claims were out of worry and protection?
After the revelation, she breaks all things off from Rufus, causing him to leave Magnolia Cove again and now going back to his old ways, obviously because he is sick and tired of trying to be the good guy and still getting crapped on for it. I mean, honestly, he put up with everyone's doubts and actually tried to be good. But everyone has their limits, so can you blame him for saying "fine, no matter what I do it is never good enough so I'm just going back and being the old me since you will never give me a chance"???
I just feel like he should have been given a redemption arc in this book that made Pepper trust him more, for example if she still had his amulet, he would have known she was in trouble and probably have been able to help when Deidre caught her.
It felt like a rushed way to get rid of an unwanted character and to get rid of a possible friend to Pepper and squash a possible rival to Axle. Who knows, he could have been redeemed and given a love interest and become another good character instead of a future write-off and evil mastermind

I finally finished the ten book edition thats on kindle unlimited and I thought that I wouldn't be able to read more, but the next books are on kindle unlimited too, which is very exciting for me.
I like the addition of the school, and how they told us more about it this time. I guessed that Deirdre murdered Beverly like from the first time she was mentioned (after the murder obviously), but it was still a fun book to read!
Every time I read another book in this series, my dislike for Axel goes up and up. I hate all of Pepper and Axel's dialogue. Like every convo they have is unbearable. Anyways, since I've finally finished the first ten books, here are some of the absolutely insane quotes I've highlighted: "wiped a hand on a rag tie-dyed with grease" "I tried to hide my fright at her baldness" "i really hate it when women cry" "I towel dried my hair and put it into a messy bun" "I widened my eyes and put on a goofy face so he'd know I was joking" " letting the testosterone rule his body, he became violent. He'd start bar fights..." "betty craple, who was mostly head and boobs" Seriously tho why did they mention her boobs like every second "Yes, I was such a cheeseball that I caught it" "Johnny Utah is not a regular guy. He's mafia" "I wore a brown dress that was perfect for fall and favored my complexion, silver hoop earrings and boots. I threw on a pleather jacket, pulled back my hair and felt ready to go out on the town" "zinger of want" "Most girls might not want a big alpha werewolf to do something like that, but I loved it" he literally just hugged her there "A testosterone cloud filled the air"

Another fun addition to the series. In this book, much of the story is set at the magic school which turns into a refreshing change for our characters. Pepper has the chance to teach a lesson on familiars and solve yet another murder that has occurred in Magnolia Cove.
Once again, the author has managed enough twists and turns that I wasn't 100% sure on the murderer until the end.
Another key point is Rufus' return to Magnolia Cove and the complications that arise. Poor novice Pepper doesn't realize what it means to accept a gift from Rufusm. Meanwhile Pepper and Axel juggle around some big questions and decisions about their future. It was a little maddening, but nice to see another side of Axel. One who actually has some feelings and emotions and isn't just the standard sexy boyfriend.
My only negative for this book was the portrayal of Burt. It is was the stereotypical cliche gay man trop that has been overdone. There is more to a gay man than his femininity and his fashion/decor sense. Reducing his character to a cliche was really disappointing.
Ok and my second was the slight moments of Pepper's insecurities about what she's eating and her obliviousness to Axel's real feelings.
Another light, quirky, easy read that will keep you reading. A nice plot and the characters really enhance the storyline as they find things about themselves that they hadn't wanted to even think about let alone confess to anyone else. Especially loved the chauvinist snake that would only help when asked too by a male. Rufus is back and the coin of protection he has given her is causing a rift between her and Axel. As Axel has told her that she is his life mate, leaving her floundering. Her short teaching spell at the school had the Three Mean Girls (teachers) trying to put her down so much so that one even tried to kill her. However the spell back fired and got the originator instead. Now the mayor has decided to step down and Betty is fighting Gilda in the elections. Gilda is fighting dirty by getting the town hot under the collar regarding a secret that Betty is hiding from all witches. A chance to life amongst humans and be undetected. Will she keep believiing in Rufus? What will her answer be to Axel? How will the mayoral race end? Will the killer be caught?
Finally an installment that almost completely takes place in the school of magic! I absolutely love the shift in scenery and the authors ability to keep this series fresh and exciting. This was the first time Pepper really has to deal with magical people not in her own comfortable environment in Magnolia Cove. Pepper has to go to the local magical college and teach about familiars! What we think will be a light hearted time for her ends up becoming so much deeper than that. First of all she is judged by every instructor and teacher of the school due to her lineage of only being half magical. Second of all there is of course a murder to solve. But even more interesting Pepper gets really involved in learning how deep her magical family tree goes. The magical school has a library that really seems to hold all of the secrets; maybe even more than the magical archive of Magnolia Cove. We also learn even more about Axel and his magical past, and what that might mean for Pepper and the rest of her life. I really can never say enough good things about these books because they really are great. If you need something to put you in a better mood, make you smile, or you just need to be transported to a different reality these books are really perfect. There always seems to be a place for everyone in Magnolia Cove.
Pepper Dunn is invited to teach classes on witch familiars at the Southern School of Magic, where she finds a group of viciously mean teachers. When one of them is murdered in the presence of several people, she and her boyfriend, Axel Reign, go in search of the villain. Rufus, who's been granted entry back into Magnolia Cove, is one of those present. Additionally, Axel shares important information (a bomb of sorts) he learned while he was gone with Pepper.
This Witch & Wizard Mystery is extraordinary. The mystery is deeply convoluted. So much so that the villain might be unpredictable until near the end. The bomb made for some interesting commentary. Ultimately, the villain is captured, and the story ends happily for the protagonists.
Pepper and her crew are back at it again, and this time their adventures take them straight to the local school of magic. Pepper’s been asked to teach a class about familiars, which is already a recipe for chaos in itself. But in true Pepper fashion, she has more than one thing on her plate—while teaching, she’s also determined to uncover a hidden truth about her own heritage. It seems the magical community might be keeping a few secrets tucked away, and Pepper is never one to shy away from digging for answers.
As with every installment in this series, readers can count on plenty of antics, laughter, and heartwarming moments. The humor and hijinks make the story fly by, while the deeper hints at family mysteries add another layer of intrigue. This series never fails to bring an upbeat, lighthearted energy that leaves you smiling, and this book is no exception—it’s another delightful, magical romp that keeps you entertained from beginning to end.
This is an entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series. A fun cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. Pepper done isn’t extraordinary witch who lives in a small southern town. She owns and runs a familiar pet store. She matches witches and wizards with her familiar. Her boyfriend Axel is a private investigator. Her grandmother basically runs the town behind the scenes and her two cousins who also live with her or her best friends. Pepper has a knack for getting involved in crime investigations and helping solve mysteries around town. One way or another she ends up being involved. With the help of her family her boyfriend and other towns people she always either figures out who did it or stumbles into who did it. Either way the guilty party tends to get caught. Read on and be entertained.
Pepper gets to teach a class for a short time explaining about familiars and how they bond with their owners and how the owners bond with them. Unfortunately there are three very nasty teachers that show up, one of whom is very vocal in trying to sabotage Pepper's teaching.
Being nasty is now rewarded this time, though, as the really nasty one ends up quite dead. Rufus shows up and gives her a protection amulet which pisses off Axel and their relationship might just possibly be over.
There's also a talking snake (who has been treated fairly badly by its owner), there's a possibility that witches could become invisible to humans and things with Rufus may not end on a happy note.
I am really enjoying this series, especially the parts dealing with the familiars.
Book 10 is incredible, the momentum for this series is effortlessly climbing and the characters are doing a bang up job of showing up and out.
Pepper still finds trouble as effortlessly as a leaf falls in a windstorm and Axel is going to wear himself out protecting her.
The Craple women are in fine form while they are up to their necks in every way in messes (theirs and others) and the magical action is happening non stop, even if it isn’t Pepper learning more to protect herself.
This is a family friendly book and collection worthy and a fast paced read.
I do love this series very much. I am binge reading right now. So, that being said, I will comment on a couple books back and this book. The one where Betty becomes a toad...I really felt let down when they didn't even talk about rescuing her and pushed it off like no big deal when the whole book, up til the end centered on that goal.
This book. I don't know if anyone else is upset or not but I was really rooting for Rufus to be a good guy and eventually find friendship with Pepper but love with Amelia! I mean seriously....he is more than the 1 dimensional character he was painted to be at the end of the book. Ok, crawling off my soapbox now.
Good end to this one. Can't wait for the next book. Another mystery solved. This book put Rufus back into the "bad boy" category, which I liked. He always is more exciting in that role. We can look forward to him showing up in Magnolia Cove again as an evil sorcerer. Spells, evil witches and surprises abound. Light reading for those who like exciting without terrifying. I also really love all the critters that get involved in the stories.
Anyone who has tried to work on their family history knows jyst how mind boggling it can be. Its tough being related to one of the first settlers in my state, but it wouldn't have bothered me to be second or third. Betty Frappe runs for mayor and the whole town explodes of ancestral issues? This is filled with machinations, murder, and mayhem. I admit, I did hate to see Rufus leave again. Great book tho! 😍
Amy Boyles has such a great imagination. In this book Pepper is added to teach a class at the magical school. When one of the mean girl type teachers is murdered she investigates. She also must help Betty prove to the town that their family isn't hiding a spell that keeps them from being detected by the humans. She is also dealing with Rufus again and trying to keep her relationship with Axel on track with him being jealous of Rufus.
I normally only rave about this series but I have to be honest: this was my least favorite book of the series, largely because of the behavior of two of the main characters I'd previously enjoyed. I still gave it three stars because I like the series as a whole and I still enjoyed the solving the murder plot. Also, is the uncle coming back? He was mentioned several books ago but we haven't heard hide no hair of him in a while. What's going on with him? I thought that would go somewhere but it hasn't so far.
Mild Spoiler below:
Axel aggravated me to no end in this book. The jealousy, the suspicion, the hypocrisy, UGH. I was just over it. I normally really like him but a new side of him came out and I'm not a fan of it. I hope this doesn't continue, it's enough to make me stop reading the series.
Now a major spoiler:
Seriously...you've been warned.....
OMG I LIKE RUFUS MAYES. I don't necessarily need him to be Pepper's love interest, but I do like him as a character and him reverting back to being the "bad guy" was infuriating. The trigger for it lowkey wasn't even that big a deal and I like his friendship with Pepper. I hope this is only temporary and I hate that now it looks like Axel was "right" after all that drama with Pepper and him being kind of a jerk. He's going to be insufferable now.
I'm just doing one review for the first ten books in the series, since I bought it as a bundle. I'd give them a 3.5, but rounding up because they're basically fun. There are a handful of errors that made me twitch (including spelling "dyed" wrong in book 10), but I've seen worse. The books are short and sweet. Many names are ludicrous and the culprits are predictable, but it was a pleasant diversion.
Pepper and Axel are up to their armpits in mysteries again. First a murder, then a book only a few people can read, then getting kidnapped along with Mattie. All this on top of several serious talks with Axel. Not to mention, the council decided to let Rufus back into town!
Teachers be crazy, y'all! Another hilarious paranormal mystery, this time involving the Southern Magic School, and some very mean girl type teachers. It was a bit unbelievable just how mean they were, but the exaggerated nature of the story made it work. It's always a fun time with this cast of characters.
Amy never ceases to amaze me every story is fantastic she leaves me wanting more I can't wait for the next book she is just fantastic and a very talented lady
Turn on the continuing story of Pepper and Axel Well they saw more mysteries.
Follow the Crapple Family as they fight for long held secrets. How old is the family really? What secrets do they hold? Be sure to read this and find the answers.
This is a book that was fun to read and I did truly enjoyed reading it. I will not say anything about what I read because I tend to blurt out the twists and turns and spoil it for others. If you want to read a good book or rather series this is a good one to read.
After some strange happenings at the witches school, one of the teachers dies a mysterious death. The search for the killer brings new information to the town.
