Marie Johnston is an award-winning, best-selling paranormal and contemporary romance writer. She grew up in the upper Midwest and planned to go to college for English. Didn't happen. She started college in accounting and was awful! Grabbing her inner science geek by the pocket protector, she changed to microbiology and medical technology where her only writing involved scientific articles and procedures.
Eventually, she left full-time work for full-time baby raising but kept thinking, "one day, I'd like to write a book." Finally, before any more time passed, Marie decided to buckle down and write. She loves it!

"Rourke" is the second book of the New Vampire Disorder series but can be read as a stand-alone novel.

Rourke is a vampire who is part of an elite investigation squad. He and his team are investigating a murder of three humans who were the family to another vampire, Grace. But it doesn't stop there. It later continues with the abduction of a little boy, who is a vampire, and his nanny.

Rourke has a hard life. His parents sold him as a blood slave and a sex slave when he was twelve years old. His older brother, Osiris, seemed to get away from that but had his own cross to bear, unbeknownst to Rourke, who has made it his mission to kill him.

Grace is a novice vampire. She was raised by humans after her parents were murdered by who she thinks is Rourke. She dreams about it often and she keeps seeing his face as the murderer. When she discovers her human family has been slaughtered in the woods and she sees him at the scene of the crime, she naturally takes a step back.

Rourke has some baggage. He is what is termed as a "commoner" who is now living the life of a "prime". (There is a vampire hierarchy I'd not encountered in any other vampire novels I've read but it works.) He has vowed to never again be used just for the sake of sex or having blood taken from him. He will do it to others but nobody will ever do it to him again. It deeply affects his relationship with Grace, who eventually shows him love and kindness...but not before deceit and near-betrayal.

The story is actually pretty good. The plot doesn't wander and the characters are easy to care about and cheer for. I was introduced to a facet of vampires I'd not read in other novels. A hierarchy, vampires who pack guns and knives, vampires who are possessed by demons...it gave them a more human-like veneer. Of course, they still had their supernatural powers, like an increased sense of smell and being able to move quicker than humans, and even flash to other places. But they seemed more human and that was okay.

Why it lost a star in the review is because the bad grammar and wrong word usage got annoying. As the book got closer to the end, it got worse.

It was a good book with a lot of action and drama. I just think it needs another trip to the editor.

This new vampire world just gets better and better. Book two sees our new team of vampire politicians still tracking down demons who are turning to more violent pursuits. Demetrius is now investigating a series of recent murders - all with the lingering scent of demon at the scene of the crime.

Grace is a victim of these new crimes and is both scared and attracted to Rourke.

Rourke is determined to remain the hard emotionless vampire he has always been but Grace gets under his skin.

As they look into these murders they delve deeper into the mystery of the demons and discover some links between the human world and the demons.

I just love everything about this non-typical vampire world. Yes there are still alpha males and true mates and bonding rituals but this world throws in demons and a class social system to mix things up and it all works really well together.

Grace is a vampire that has been adopted by a human family after they found her when her family was murdered and she was the only survivor. Her only memory came from a dream of a dark-eyed man looking for her. Imagine her shock when her human family is also murdered and the man she’d been dreaming about is there and...a vampire?

Rourke was rescued from where he had been sold as a blood slave by his family since, for real nourishment, vampires have to feed from vampires. He had been rescued by Demetrius and become a part of his team that was responsible for cleaning up scenes from sloppy vampire kills and any other signs that vampires, demons and werefolk really existed. Grace was placed in his care.

This book is well-written and it shows in how quickly it reads. The author sets up a world that is consistent within itself. I do like that you learn about the societies as the story proceeds and an explanation was needed rather than explain all at once and draw you out of the story. I now have to go back and get the first and then the other 6 to read.

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book, through Reading Deals, and I gave an honest review.

Love vampire books especially when they are very well written like this one. She goes to live in the vampire world from the human world after her family is killed. She is a vampire herself. She meets Rourke and thinks he is the one who did the killing but finds out it was his twin. There are twists and turns and this is fun and exciting throughout and keeps your attention. I highly recommend it. I was given a review copy by reading deals and voluntarily review it.

This was such a good book. I didn’t mind it was a little dark. The story and characters are well written. I couldn’t put this book down. I can’t wait to read the next book. I definitely recommend reading this book. (I received this book as an arc and am leaving a voluntary honest review)

The heroine acted a bit too stupid to live for a while in the middle, but otherwise these are likable characters and it ended well.

I liked this book far more than I expected to. The characters are remarkably easy to sit with and the dialogue is pretty snappy at times.
