"She was a prodigy. If any gods that controlled death existed, surely she was dearly loved by them."

The book is divided into various stories like it always is, but this time it isn't simply about Violet and her experiences as an auto-memory doll, no. The stories cover a wide range of topics, from battle to romance, as they did previously. At the end of the book, there is one large tale involving all of the characters, which feels like a wonderful way to close the book. There were no dramatic stories, but the emphasis was instead placed on the characters' interactions.

There's something about the narration that irritates me, particularly the way it presents the characters over and over again. Everything else is excellent. The last piece about the Postal Wars was a tad excessive. It's a little strange, but it does happen.

I can't wait for the final book.

You might like to wander through a few artistic journals — they’re full of sparks and surprises.

chapter 1.

“I wish to stop your tears.”

man, it’s easy for me to be emotional when reading violet evergarden. i loved this story because of the mother-daughter-like relationship between governess alberta and princess charlotte. and violet evergarden has a glimpse of a type of romantic love which we all know she was trying to understand ever since the death of gilbert. the romance between princess charlotte and prince damian changed from obligation to freewill. i loved that charlotte got her love.

“Princess Charlotte. Please find happiness.”

chapter 2.

That’s why, my Taylor, call my name if you get lonely.

I forgot how heartbreaking this story was until the end. this short story was the adaptation of the violet evergarden movie. i remember how much isabella hesitated in accepting violet.

chapter 3.

If you are crying, you cannot see what lies ahead.”
“I will pull you by the hand, yes?”
“Let’s go home.”

benedict is always one of the more cheerful characters so i didn’t expect him to have such a hard past. through this short story, we get a glimpse of how grateful benedict is towards hodgins, the man who found him and brought him back. i’m glad that benedict has his support system and has found a safe space in this life.

chapter 4.

love triangle: hodgins, benedict, cattleya.

wrong, the only couple: benedict and cattleya.

benedict has taken a leave of absence, and have been gone for three months. cattleya’s feeling his absence. she finally comes to terms with her feelings and is somewhat ready to confess.

—If I’m going to be in a relationship, then let it be for the sole point of being in love.

chapter 5.

gilbert and claudia: best friends in military school.

this is a backstory on how gilbert and hodgins met even though they were two years apart. gilbert was a stoic child while hodgins was the total opposite. their friendship started after a fight but that still left hodgins wondering if they were truly friends after many years.

—To think that those two who had parted ways would meet again.
It was a common love story, which seemed like it could happen anywhere. But that was precisely why…
—…I think I want them to be happy enough to make up for their detours.
He and she. Both of them were irreplaceable people for Hodgins.

chapter 6.

“Negotiations broken.”

i chuckle every time violet’s physical appearance and her scariness was brought up side by side. she’s one beautiful woman who can wield an axe, a rocket launcher, any weapon with exceptional competency.

“They aren’t just former soldiers and mercenaries. Benedict is an ex-mercenary who had the nickname of ‘Battle-Hungry Freak’ in another continent. Cattleya was a boxer. She has arms so strong that no one can beat her by using force. And that beautiful girl whose name you can even say everyone knows in the Auto-Memories Doll business… my adorable Little Violet, used to be Leidenschaftlich’s most powerful female soldier. It’s in the past, though.” Hodgins smiled at Lux. “By the way, my secretary is a former demigoddess.”

the whole story is about a kidnapping and the bombing of the third floor of CH Postal Service and yet, it’s so light-hearted and hilarious because EVERYONE is taking this so nonchalantly.

Her eyes spoke more eloquently than her expressionless self. Violet’s blue orbs were glued to Gilbert’s emerald ones.

“Because I love you most.”
“Love me… most?”
“I have eyes for nobody but you. You’re the only one I’m fond of.”
“That is… to love most?”
“I will hold you dear for eternity, and continue to love you.”

the author reminds you that ultimately, violet evergarden illustrates the story of a young female soldier, violet evergarden, learning to know what is love after a quiet, painful confession by her dying major. as violet started to know more people and watch them show love, in various ways, in various forms, she started to know a little bayou “love” and what it entails. she finally reunites with him and there’s just this feeling of warmth when i read the ending. i can’t tell you how much i love violet evergarden. every chapter made me tear up, each character is unique in their own ways, everybody played a role in violet’s life.

I always end up reading something related to this series right before or during the release of an animated version, the film that will wrap up Violet's story hits the theaters on the 17th of September 2020.

───────────────────

As always the book is broken down into several stories, however, the difference this time is that it's not just about Violet and her adventures as an automemories doll, no. The first two stories cover the same story-lines covered in episode 5 of the anime (Princess Charlotte, story 1) and the full feature gaiden film (Isabella York, story 2), which I overall liked to read about once again. I will put it out there that I enjoyed the film a bit more than the corresponding story because KyoAni are magic to me and their expansion of the story was very very nice. Not saying they didn't live up to their animated versions, because that's not true.

The 3 stories afterwards, gives a closer look on other members of the postal service, Benedict, Cattleya and Hodgins respectively. Now the one detailing Benedict was the one that actually gave background information about him and raised one very interesting idea about him and Violet. Not in a romantic sense, although if I'm being honest, it's 10x more interesting than any romantic subplot ever. Cattleya's story however, doesn't actually reveal any background info about her more so than gives her the chance to come to terms with a few things about herself and act on them. If I compare the two stories and the enjoyment received from them, then I'll lean more towards Cattelya because of two reasons:

1. She has a very fun personality for me
2. Her story was brief and to the point, Benedict's dragged on a bit without adding much to warrant it.

Hodgins was the last to get a focus, and in turn that gives Gilbert focus as well as the story details their days in the academy. Hodgins is fun to read about as well, I'm not a big fan of any character like him usually, but the way Akatsuki Kana-sensei writes him makes him endearing. I enjoyed the stories and even though I kept wishing for other angles to be tackled, it was still very pleasant. I really like the way emotions and feelings about oneself, situations and surrounding individuals remains the main part of the story. It gives Violet growth and in turn gives those around her growth as well, even if it's a small amount anyway. The journey there is the fun part.

The final story of the book is just as ridiculous in proportions as the train hijacking in previous volumes, but I just take that the author's way of ending things with a bang. What matters? it was so fun to read about and seeing multiple people go crazy and not just Violet with Witchcraft was fantastic. I hold a tiny grudge against KyoAni for removing the action/fantasy-ish parts of the book, but the novel is there to fill in those gaps later on.

I can't wait for the final book and film, neither creator nor studio have let me down yet and I doubt they'll start now.

This is honestly the best of the books, which isn't saying much. The writing is still not very good, though that might still be down to questionable translation. There's a lot of cute backstory in this volume, particularly when it comes to Gilbert, Hodgins, and Dietfried. Hodgins is... rather patronizing, still, so that's... not that great. If you're looking for the softer version of him from the show, you're not really going to find him here. Even outside of flashbacks. He's softer post-military, he's just... also patronizing.

There is also backstory for Benedict, and more insight on Cattleya's personality, neither of which are good stories, but they exist, so there's that.

I would still recommend watching the show and films over reading these. It's just not worth it unless you're a completionist or curious. The book doesn't have all that that much to do with the anime and films and almost none of what's in this novel was adapted for the screen as of yet, in part because so much of the story was changed for the anime and films that a good chunk of this wouldn't work as an adaptation.

It's important to put side by side the LN and the anime series when it comes to Violet Evergarden since I'm sure most of you will come for the LN after you finished the anime. I am writing the review for the entirety of the Violet Evergarden series.

Before the anime series aired in 2018, I was intrigued enough to read the LN and managed to find some kind translators since this is not available internationally. To me, the anime was visually stunning yet the LN is INFINITELY MORE CHARMING.

The characters are more complex—all broken yet beautiful especially the Bougainvilleas. You will probably morally question their choices in life yet you might end up feel conflicted because for some reason, their bad choices are rooted from their past, and the aftermath is unnavoidable. Some characters are not present in the anime in replacement for the new ones. Yet I personally feel that the ones left out from the LN puts more to the story than their replacements in the anime series.

The found family is more gripping. While in the anime, the dynamics and connections between characters are inconsistent, it is more profound in the LN. The CHS postal became one of my favorite found family in fiction and everyone is loveable on their own rights. Speaking biasedly, I found anime!Benedict as a boring character that has a personality of a cardboard but LN!Benedict became my favorite not just for his past but also for his entire personality. Other characters like Hodgins and Cattleya were not properly explored in the anime so if you crave for them more, you might want to start reading the LN.

The entire plot of Violet Evergarden heavily focuses on the aftermath of the war and while the anime was able to show its horror, nothing competes the emotion invoked from the words of Akatsuki Kana. I symphatized with the anime scenes but I emphatized with the LN. I cried my heart out as if I was there. As if I experienced the war myself.

The anime diverged from the LN and I'm sure that the writing can be confusing. I cannot help but be partial with the LN for its depth.

If an english translation is officially released, I will definitely buy one. For now, I leave you with Flavia's blog: https://dennou-translations.tumblr.co...

If you decided to read it, I hope you give Flavia some love.

I watched the anime, skimmed [Translation: read little parts from here and there] through the *unofficial* translations of the first two books, and read this third one.
It's a fun read. I have not much to say about this book, actually. But the anime-like dialogue written out on a page is... kinda weird, so to say.
Plus, my main problem with this series: the MAIN character's relationship?? ...meh. Showing large red flags of pedophilia here. Note that Violet Evergarden was TEN years old when she met Gilbert, who was probably TWENTY-SIX back then. That's one thing I don't like about both the show and the books. The glaring age-gap between them is so ew. The books would have been completely amazing if they thought about making Violet 18, and making her meet Gilbert later on in her life, and make her feel things again, blah blah blah, so on, so forth. But alas, this relationship seems to be one of the main plots of the book. WHYY
But thank you, author, for making Benedict and Cattleya a thing. I knew, when I set my eyes upon those two fighting in the anime, that it'd be my fav OTP from here. Even though they are the trope-iest couple, I love them okay?? Is there a ship name for them??? Plz tell me they have their own ship name.
About the characters; Violet could have been a little older, Hodgins is a bi icon, Lux should've been in the anime, Cattleya's more mature in the anime, and Benedict? i dont know what to say about him. We don't actually know much of him, but damn i have a feeling the whole fandom worships this man. Is it because of his wild fashion sense? Is it because of him wearing high-heel boots? we may never know. His backstory's VERY interesting, and the author could've made him his own protagonist in a book, where we get to explore more of him. Heck, i like his character more than his alleged little sister Violet Evergarden!
Three stars. Could have given two, but im generous.

This book is the so-called Gaiden, the Side Story. Another Japanese word to add to my ever-growing vocabulary list.

As was the case with the previous two volumes, it consists of separate stories, each story lasting one chapter. Most notably, it contains the story that is also present in the Gaiden film Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll, and some chapters written from the point of view of some of Violet's friends-slash-colleagues at the CH Postal Company. As such, they're maybe not the most emotionally loaded chapters, but they do provide a firm, interesting background for their personalities and their relationships with Violet. And, let's be real here, even I don't sound mighty enthousiastic right now, it's still Violet Evergarden. Even if it's not entirely perfect - it does come close.

9.3/10

I first came to know of this work of art through its animation, visually speaking it was so satisfying, but the storyline compared to that of the original books didn't do it much justice! The animation didn't feature some of the major plot twists, characters, flashbacks , and details about the lead character's history (what's with her being a demigoddess and all). Which is basically THE BETTER HALF OF THE STORY!!! So if you're here because of the animation then I strongly recommend u to leave your doubts behind and go for the book coz trust me it'll blow your mind and exceed your expectations.

There's something about the narration that I don't enjoy so much, this way of repeatedly presenting the characters again and again and again. I'm giving my three stars because of that. Everything else is pretty good. That last story about the Postal Wars was a bit too much for me hahaha I mean, yeah right. A bit crazy, but it does actually happen.

This one was better than the previous ones. Although I do not approve at all Violet and Gilbert's, I liked the development of the other characters. Besides Cattleya and Benedict are good enough to forget about the other two.

I've blended this books so completely in my head at this point that I can't differentiate the individual storylines. I'll just say that this novel was a wonderful read, continuing with the same voice and tone that makes Violet Evergarden so enjoyable in the first place, and I believe anyone who had any enjoyment of the anime will likewise enjoy this series.

So, the third book in the series has been read as quickly as it was possible. I think this feels like the longest one in the series, however it still is easy to read. I think of it quite highly actually.

The positive points are the range of interconnected stories and the characters` image.

The stories vary in range from battle to romance, kind of like it was previously. There is one big story at the end with all the characters involved, which feels like a good way to end the book. There were no dramatic stories, however, the focus was shifted to the characters` interaction instead.

Characters in question are all members of Claudia Hodgins`s company. It creates a good friendly atmosphere and allows us to understand why does Violet love this work so much - in addition to what clues we get in other books.

Negative points are: messy chapter scenes (present in two of the chapters), sloppy dialogues and anime-like approach to building dialogues/characters.

As for the scenes - the chapters read smoothly, however it is possible to be lost in the middle of the page due to unexpected dialogue start/ending or some sort of event occuring. It throws the reader off balance and requires me to re-read the whole page again. It happened to me only in 2 chapters though.

Sloppy dialogues are all about catchphrases and cliches, and this is something that is seen everywhere in the book with the exception of Violet and Guibert`s lines (probably because they don`t have so many to begin with).

Anime-like approach shows itself closer to the end of the book with Hodgins playing the typical anime main character with his foolish bravery towards Lux, who acts entirely differently within, like, a page. Benedict and Claudia are a pair from your typical romance anime (tsundere and the guy who takes the 'well, I guess it can`t be helped so I`ll play along' approach). Even the narrative bends to underline it in the battle and post-battle scenes.

Overall, it is still a good, high-quality book, with its strong points and some flaws, which are not totally impactful.
