The incredible survival story of Larcena Pennington Page in the Arizona wilderness is well documented. However, until now, we've never actually seen this journey unfold through the eyes of the woman. Author Elle Marlow does an amazing job of retelling the tale in Larcena's voice. You will be taken back in time and be awed at how love empowers the human spirit. After surviving a dangerous journey from Tennessee, Larcena Pennington arrives in Arizona with her family. Soon after, she falls hopelessly in love with lumberjack, John Page. John works at the lumber mill in Madera Canyon, while Larcena is left behind at nearby Canoa Ranch to help with chores and educate a young girl. After malaria begins to threaten her health, John decides to move Larcena closer to the mill, believing that cooler weather will help her feel better. It is on that journey that both Larcena and her student are brutally captured by the Apaches. Larcena is forced to travel with them and when she is caught trying to leave a trail for her husband to follow, she is beaten and left for dead. This is her story of survival and how she crawled for sixteen days through an untamed wilderness to reunite with the man that she loves. This is a 20k words NovellaThe Before Arizona Series is a planned series of novellas that depict the founding pioneers of Arizona, their experiences, triumphs and great loves.***Winner Best Arizona Manuscript The Wild Bunch Film Festival READ FOR FREE with KINDLE UNLIMITED.
Elle Marlow is a proud Arizonan. She spends her time traveling the state, filming travel vlogs and appearing in Tombstone, Empire Ranch and Sonoita for book signings. A mother of five, Elle is super busy. Writing about the west, old and new, and a few comedies just for fun, is her way of keeping the memory and the cowboy culture alive and well. Go find her on her blog, and become a part of the shenanigans there. She talks about her books, her family, her travels and the basic things that make life interesting.
History wants us to believe it was strong American men who tamed the western frontiers of the New World, but it required strong women, too. Larcena Pennington Page was every bit as brave and resourceful as the frontiersmen we praise so willingly. In this true story, Larcena was taken captive in an Indian attack, beaten to near death and abandoned in the wilderness. She was injured so severely she could not stand. So, she literally crawled on hand and knee back to civilization and the man she loved. Author Elle Marlow is a gifted storyteller who deserve more recognition. I plan to read more of her “Before Arizona Series.” You should too.
This short story about one of the early Arizona settler's courageous battle against the forces of nature after being attacked is well worth the read. I had tears streaming down my face at the end. Truly a great story about the human will to survive. Love it!
I enjoyed Larcena's journey, was with her through all the hardships, to the satisfying end. I'm looking forward to reading the next Novellas as they come along. JudyE
A great story. I’d never heard of the individuals before, but it seemed to me the author did an amazing job of retelling their tale in a fictitious manner. I loved it
