A short story about a tormented girl enmeshed in a plot she wants out of.
Excerpts:
"The mother superior wept while shutting her up in the tomb, but Rebecca didn’t. She clutched close her letters from Everard. They gave her the strength to wait out the darkness, to stave off the encroaching threat of death, to ignore the fact that the king’s assassin stalked the halls above searching for her, his blade hungry for her blood."
"She would never forget the first moment she’d seen him. Straight dark hair, intent gray eyes set in a narrow, hawkish face. His every look penetrated the soul, bared every secret; his every touch brought with it a whisper of doom; his every movement slid through reality, elegant, graceful, and deadly. He spoke little, moved sparingly; he was still until action was necessary, quiet until words were essential. This was the assassin who killed hundreds at the king's behest. The man she was to live with, spend every spare moment with. The man who would train her to do the impossible."
This is a dark romance with an edge. If you're looking for a good introduction for Sonya Lano's writing, look no further. Lyrical and haunting, this story reads like a melancholy tune that you can't get out of your head, and that you don't quite want to.
Like a hint of Gothic and grimness? This short story has it in spades. Love, revenge, self hatred, how emotions can be twisted... It's not your usual fantasy romance. It is far darker, though thankfully without going into explicit gore or graphic sexuality. The tone is so morose you can feel the character Rebecca's angst at the situation she's found herself in. The only downside to it was how the ending just seemed a tad convenient and quickly executed - but it's a short story, and everything's wrapped up in time. It feels pretty deep despite having such a limited cast, and the writing style captures the atmosphere beautifully. Definitely an author I'd check out more from.
