Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace (1875-1932) was a prolific British crime writer, journalist and playwright, who wrote 175 novels, 24 plays, and countless articles in newspapers and journals.

Over 160 films have been made of his novels, more than any other author. In the 1920s, one of Wallace's publishers claimed that a quarter of all books read in England were written by him.

He is most famous today as the co-creator of "King Kong", writing the early screenplay and story for the movie, as well as a short story "King Kong" (1933) credited to him and Draycott Dell. He was known for the J. G. Reeder detective stories, The Four Just Men, the Ringer, and for creating the Green Archer character during his lifetime.

EW was an incorrigible gambler who often found himself up to his neck in trouble with his debtors. I haven't any proof one way or another but I strongly suspect NUMBER SIX was dashed off overnight to pick up some quick cash to settle a debt. The story is extremely disappointing. The identity of No 6 is supposed to be a secret but you can figure out who he is the instant he walks on stage. Nor is the villain Ceasar of any interest. He's so bland and boring you wonder why anybody wants him to begin with. EW has his share of clunkers and this counts among them.

This is a perfect time waster. Free public domain downloads makes this perfect for trips, especially short ones like train rides to work since this is not a particularly long or complex story. Basically there's the typical foreign bad guy, Caesar Valentine, who is suspected of many shady things but Scotland Yard, or any other police department for that matter, can't pin any crimes on him so they send in an undercover operative only known as Number Six to find out enough to put Valentine away for good. Along the way we meet Tray Bong Smith, a criminal low life who attracts the attention of Caesar Valentine, Stephanie, the beautiful daughter of Caesar, and Mr. Ross, a mysterious American millionaire. Admittedly it's not much of a mystery since you know who the bad guy is and what he's accused of right from the start and figuring out exactly who Number Six isn't that difficult but it's still an enjoyable read.

It was harder to care a great deal about the characters in this book. But I was fooled about the identity of "Number Six!"
