Niles is an extreme long distance runner. He's training for a 100-mile endurance race. Today's workout is 50 miles with a goal time of 11 hours to finish. He's barely halfway finished and behind his time when he notices something strange at the Liberty Glen campground.....
Screams.
Blood.
Zombies.
Niles can't bring himself to actually use the word zombie....but that's what the monsters are. Dead, but animate, former humans with horrific milky white blind eyes. Attacking. Killing.
Niles joins forces with a hunter and his teenage son as they run for the safety of Niles' car on the other side of Lake Sonoma. It's 20 miles....can they outrun the horde of undead? Niles uses his race mindset to help keep them moving. Run the flats and downhill....power walk the uphill....stay ahead of the horde that wants to eat you. Good advice!
Can they outrun the hungry undead?
I love a good zombie story! Camille Picott definitely delivers with this prequel to her Undead Ultra series. I have read a lot of zombie stories in my day....but this is the first time I've read one involving endurance runners. The story is like the Run, Zombies, Run running app on steroids! Fun! Niles uses his running experience to keep himself and two other survivors moving. It isn't just about fitness....it's a mindset, too. And in this case, it's about surviving.
Dawn Patrol is a prequel story to Undead Ultra....a story of two endurance runners trying to outpace the zombie apocalypse and save their son. 200 miles. Can they make it?
After reading this intro story, I'm definitely going to read Undead Ultra! The mix of endurance running and the zombie apocalypse is perfect!
**I received a free copy of this story from the author. All opinions expressed are entirely my ow
Good! I really liked this story, a bit of a change to the usual zombie end of the world! Looking forward to the rest of the series! Glad I found this new writer!
Great short prequel. Camille Picott combines zombies and the world of ultra marathons. This will probably be of most interest to those readers who are runners or interested in running, but zombie fans should also find the story engaging. I would highly recommend checking out this free prequel and am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
Good story of a guy out training for a major race when he sees something strange. Then he hears someone's calls for help. When he gets there the place is overrun by the living dead. can he help this kid get to safety?
This novella, while based on zombies, is truly about what humans can endure and survive. How far can you push your body when you have a good reason? What if that reason is your life? Would be able to push through and keep going? Could you help others do the same?
Niles is an ultra-marathon runner. He is in training for the Western States race, 100 grueling miles long. His training ground is the rough terrain around Lake Sonoma. There are plenty of lonely trails and hills to climb.
Today Niles is on a 50 mile trek, but shortly after his halfway point, as he nears a camp ground, he hears screams. Obviously something is wrong. He cautiously approaches all of the people he observes are behaving quite odd. Further there seems to be something physically wrong with them.
Niles is still over 20 miles from his car and any chance of safety. How will he survive the camp ground of the undead? Are there other survivors?
A good, quick read about Zombies! Since I hate running of any type, I can't imagine having to outrun a hoard of zombies. But, that's exactly what happens in this quick, engaging tale.
Niles is an ultra long distance runner, in training for the big West Coast 100 mile endurance race. While out on a training run, he encounters a bunch of creatures that he refuses to call zombies (but that's exactly what they are!). When he meets up with a young boy and his father, he has to try to help them escape before they are overrun.
This is as much a story about survival and what a human can do when it becomes necessary as it is about zombies. I look forward to continuing this series.....the characters were great and well-developed for a short story and the premise was intriguing.
This story is A super intense zombie tale. The men stumble into the middle of A massacre. They soon realize that the attackers are no longer human and they have to run for their lives. Wildly exciting.
This was kinda perfect. I appreciated how well developed and realistic Niles, Steve and Ray seemed. And I always love seeing the zombie apocalypse through a new lens. Can't wait to read the next one
"Dawn Patrol" starts at a run and the pace builds from there. It's short (54 pages on my Ereader) but as an introduction to the 'Undead Ultra' series it does a good job. Niles is an ultra-runner and is getting in training for his biggest challenge yet, the 100-mile Western States Endurance Run. He's just completed his first lap of Lake Sonoma when all hell breaks loose at a camp ground - it's a zombie gore fest! He rescues a teenager, Rayford, and finds his father - together they need to get back to Niles' car which is twenty miles away. But these are no ordinary Zombies, they've got stamina and speed and keep coming. Niles knows he can make it but the other two are not runners and they'll need all his help to survive. No reason is given for the Zombie outbreak and, to my at least, none is needed. It's too short to accurately judge but I liked it and will read on. 3 Stars.
This will be short and sweet as I actually wore myself out reading this book. As the book begins you are enjoying the run with Niles then you are thrown to the ground and have your insides tore out by zombies , yeah that’s right zombies. If you can imagine just being out for a training run and enjoying the scenery then out of nowhere everything changes. Now you are not running for fun you are running for your life and a predator is chasing you down. It does not stop nor slow down it just keeps coming. All I know is at the end , with my heart pounding , short of breath , I was next to the car myself panting for air. Wow what a ride..
Niles is training for his next ultramarathon when he encounters zombies. Now he has to help a father and son survive against the undead. Lovely mixture of action and backstory. I liked the characters of Niles, Rayford and Steve. The ultrarunning stories were interesting, and I particularly liked how Niles cajoled and harangued the two non runners for survival. I felt like I was on the trail with them! A great story in the undead ultra universe.
This novella is really a good metaphor for life. Niles is training for a 100 mile ultra, which I had never heard of before, when he stumbles across the beginning of the end. He must decide if he will help or just continue running for himself. I loved how even in his run for life he still appreciates the beauty around him. While ultra running is new to me I appreciated the little lessons included in the novella.
After reading a sample I had to buy this book and the next 4 books of this series!
Ms. Picott looks very young, but her writing is that of a very mature writer. I loved the way she described the terrain and the characters. She quickly made Niles come alive on the pages. This prequel to the Undead Series would be appropriate for teens and adults. The book was also very well proofread. I am looking forward to reading the next 4 books.
Prequel to the Undead Ultra series. A great story featuring someone training for an ultra run. Going through his trials and tribulations, he does have his victories and defeats. Someone once said, even victories has it's price. Our hero in this story learns this well.
A great story overall, it keeps you gripped from start to end, make sure to pick this one up!
I picked this up because I love zombies and free books. What a find! Good story, well-drawn characters, and (a supreme rarity in indie zombie novels of late) no errors in the text that I noticed. I've already wishlisted the two full-length novels in the series. Dare I hope the fates of Niles, Rayford, and Celeste will be revealed in them?
.tell me what would you do if you were out in the middle of nowhere and all hell broke lose and things only in movies became your new reality?....Really enjoyed this short story...packed a lot into a small but enjoyable novelette...i have to thank Camille for making this book free...i truly recommend it...
Reading this and hearing the descriptions of the aches and pains these runners had, it brought me right back to my track and field and cross country days! Bending over in pain while running, chaffing ankles, feeling dehydrated and desperate for water, all too familiar.
Add to that the undead chasing you? It was a great book and I highly recommend it! 🙂
Short story set in the world of Undead Ultra, which I also greatly enjoyed. If you like zombies or running, you’ll enjoy this quick read. My only complaint was it’s so short, you don’t really get to know the characters well.
Interesting zombie story line! Loved the character of Niles. Looking forward to his journey with Rayford. Inquiring minds want to know, did he find Celeste....
Enjoyable little slice of the world created by the author. The idea of ultra-marathoners in a zombie apocalypse is an interesting one. Interesting enough that I've bought the first of the novels in the series.
Short but intense reading. Miles found himselfat the end of the beginning? A runner with sassy and bite. Will you survive zombie apocalypse running? Follow Miles & Co. and discover by yourself.
Excellent zombie apocalypse story in the continuing series by Camille Picott. I listened to each story one after the other immediately after finishing the previous entry in the series. I highly recommend this book and the entire series to anyone that enjoys zombie and/or apocalypse survival.
This is a great read whether you read it before the series or after (I read it after, lol). There are no spoilers and it is just as good as the series. I do hope this author continues with the series!!!
This was a short action packed quick read and intro to the undead ultra series. I enjoyed it. It was action packed and I liked Niles and Ray ford. I wish that Rayford‘s dad hadn’t died. I will definitely check out the next book.
