I’m a grown-ass woman, and I love Riverdale. There. I said it.

I love Riverdale!
When I found out this novelisation was available I ordered it from the library immediately, and I thoroughly enjoyed being back in Riverdale with all it's wonderful characters.
If you've watched the TV series, this book doesn't really offer anything new. It is set the day before the beginning of the series, so the day before everything kicks off.
We pretty much know what happened the day before from watching the show, but in this book we get to read about it from the characters perspective, and we see what was going through their mind before they are all reunited/introduced.
Veronica is living the rich girl life in NYC, completely oblivious to how soon her entire life will be imploding.
Betty is on an internship for a magazine in LA, becoming more independent, and trying to forget her ongoing crush on Archie.
Archie is in a relationship of his own, but not one you'd expect or condone (at least I 100% did not) and one he must keep a secret at all costs.
Jughead. Jughead is my love. I absolutely adore him, he is my favourite and he makes this series for me. He is struggling with his home life, distance from his best friend Archie and ongoing issues with people. (He hates people, I hate people. We are basically meant to be) <3
In between chapters are scattered bits of media. Like letters, emails, posters etc. to keep things interesting. Overall I loved this book!

I love Riverdale!

Riverdale is a show I can't help liking, even though it's not the kind of thing I'm usually drawn to. It's over the top and endlessly dramatic, but for whatever reason, I enjoy it. I've fallen a little behind on it, but this novel has revived my interest, so I will be catching up on the rest of season 3 soon.
I was actually really impressed with this book. As the title suggests, it's set 'The Day Before' -- in this case, the day before the first episode (I'm hoping I have my timeline right!). It's fun and interesting to get this insight into the characters. It all played out in my head like a bonus episode of the show, which was aided by the fact that author did a good job of capturing what they are like on screen and translating it to the page.
Recommended if you are a Riverdale fan.
It might make sense on its own, but you will get a lot more from it if you are already familiar with the characters and all the situations that this is building towards.
Updated: I never did bother to catch up - I lost that earlier sense of fun, so focused on shows I actually enjoyed fully. Tempted to find out how Archie ended up getting attacked by a bear though!

3,5/5 ⭐️ Une lecture très rapide mais plutôt sympathique : j’ai passé un bon moment même si je n’ai pas trouvé l’écriture incroyable. Je dois avouer que je m’attendais quand même à en apprendre davantage sur les personnages, il n’y a pas assez de nouveautés à mes yeux (surtout pour Archi et Jughead, je trouve qu’on en apprend davantage sur Betty et Veronica). Même si ce livre se passe juste avant la série Riverdale, je pense que c’est mieux de voir la saison 1 avant de le lire !

Mit dieser „Vorgeschichte“ habe ich jetzt nicht mehr Wissen als zuvor. Der Schreibstil gefiel mir auch leider überhaupt nicht und die Charaktere wirkten etwas zu kindisch, obwohl sie mir in der Serie viel reifer vorkamen. Nach jedem Kapitel gab es ein SMS-Verlauf was nichts mit den Kapiteln zu tun hatte und auch andere Seitenfüller wie Wetterberichte und ähnliches.

3'25🌟 Ha sido una lectura que he disfrutado ya que la serie me está encantado y la verdad es que tenía curiosidad por saber que era de la vida de nuestros protagonistas antes del gran acontecimiento. Me ha tenido bastante enganchada por lo que el libro no me ha durado mucho que digamos pero es que la pluma de Micol Ostow es muy ligera y logra atraparte. Si habéis visto la serie o tenéis pensado hacerlo, os recomiendo muchísimo que leáis el libro porque os va a presentar a los personajes y os dará un breve preámbulo de lo que está a punto de pasar en Riverdale.

This book was ABSOLUTE trash. I understand that Riverdale is campy and ridiculous, but this book took it to another level. The timeline was confusing and the characters were honestly at their worst. The new characters added were literally for nothing and if this book is canon (which it probably isnt) it truly added NOTHING of value to the story.

Тук съм да ви донеса поредното ревю и мнението си за още една нова книга, имено – „Riverdale: Предишният ден“.
Така наречената предистория на сериала или поне така маркетирана.
Нека ви обесня, какво не ми хареса и какво ми хареса в книгата.
Аз съм мега, даже гига фен на Riverdale! Гледам го от самото начало и обожавам сериалът. Честно казано мисля, че е леко гениален – винаги има изненади в него и досега не съм срещнала повтарящи се нещас други шоута. Riverdale всъщност е базиран на дълга поредица комикси, които не са само обхващат всичките ни познати главни герои, но има и такива за всекиго отделно – предимно такива с Арчи.
Чела съм част от комиксите и мога да кажа, че няма някакви конкретни разлики със сериала и мисля, че сценаристите му доста добре са се справили с изграждането му.
Първото ми разочарование с книгата дойде от това, че си мислех, че е написана от някого свързан по някакъв начин със сериалът. Но не, всъщност е написан от писателката Микол Остоу, която явно обича да пише достоверни фенфикшъни за известни поредици. На гърба на книгата пише, че е работила и по комиксите за Арчи. Но все пак, няма пряк пръст и общо с продуцирането или каквото и да е със сериала. Не знам, за другите прочели вече книгата дали това им е направило някакво впечатление, защото на мен ми повлия доста отрицателно към самия начин да възприема книгата.
Другото нещо, което ми повлия доста отрицателно е грешно преведените имена на познатите ни герои. Като фен на сериалът, тове е едно от нещата, които най-много ме ядоса.
Някакси преводачката на книгата е решила, че познатите герои на всички ни, трябва да се казват ей така:
Джъгхед = Каната (обяснение: така било преведено от някаква си телевизия; явно нито телевизията, нито преводачката са наясно, че имена не се превеждат); Кана, по-скоро куха лейка да го бяха написали и да си стиснем ръцете а? Примерно сестра му, Джелибийн – името й е написано правилно, като нищо щеше да е преведена Желирани бонбони;
Хърмаяни Лодж = Хърмаями Лодж – не знам чия велика идея е била на две места в книгата името на майката на Вероника да е Хърмаями, с М – няма такава глупост. Даже за пример, ще напиша тук името й на английски и вие ми кажете, кое е вярното – hermione lodge;
Хуакин = Джоакин – не знам какво да ви кажа вече, мисля, че се отказвам направо – това е basic превод на мексиканско име. Joaquin винаги, винаги навсякъде се е превеждало не като Дж, а като Х. Гледала съм прекалено много филми, че без степен по филилогия да го знам. Ако греша ме поправете?!
АКО, някак си, по магически начин успеем да се абстрахираме от предишните 2 огромни неща, донесли сърдечен удар на моето ф��нско сърце – книгата всъщност е интересна и що-годе правдоподобна.
Според мен всеки фен, който прочете „Предишният ден“ мисля, че се съгласи, че историята как арестуват бащата на Вероника звучи на място. Джъгхед (по който съм луда – много ясно) разбира, че баща му отново е част south side serpents, а Арчи почва да се задява с учителката си по музика. Поли и Джейсън се готвят за своето бягство, Шерил си е просто Шерил. Като цяло идеално се вписва в картинката на случилото се преди трагичния 4ти Юли.
Историята ме остави със смесени чувства и затова и давам само 3 звезди. Постарах се да й се насладя, доколкото е възможно. Грешките по имената на героите, лично аз, не мога да ги пропусна и преживея – особено като фен, но мисля, че с всеки би било така. Предлагам сами да се убедите дали написаното от Микол Остоу влиза в картинката на Riverdale или няма място в света.
Оценявам читателското си преживяване като 3/5 звезди.

I think if you've watched the first season of the TV show you can skip this. It is really just a rehashing of what we already know. Very little is new except for a bit about Betty's internship in California which is mildly entertaining and way too much about Veronica's life in New York. She is insufferable and so, so dull. Her sections were the absolute worst. Jughead sounded like Jughead which was a highlight and Archie sounded like Archie which as you can imagine was not a highlight. If you are a Riverdale addict then this isn't a total waste of time but don't expect to be blown away by new revelations. We've seen this all before.
I listened to the audiobook and the narration quality was variable between the different narrators. Jughead was surprisingly very well done. Betty and Archie were fine but "Archie" doing female voices was atrocious. The narrator for Veronica's sections was super monotone which was unfortunate since these sections of the story were boring to begin with and when you add in flat narration it made it painful and I actually had to speed up the playback to get through it.

I started this book because the show is one of my favorites and I kinda liked the idea of reading about what happened on "the day before".
In the end I rated it with 3 stars: It was fun to read and I also really liked the features like texts or e-mails. I wouldn’t read it again tho because it isn’t really something new. Everything in this book was mentioned in the show before which is why I think that one time reading it is enough.
I‘d still recommend it to anyone who likes the show.

First off, this is a book written for the fans of the Riverdale tv show. There are some spoilers for the first season of the tv show and if you haven’t seen that one yet, I wouldn’t recommend reading the book yet. It will take away some of the enjoyment of unraveling the mystery. But when you did see the show, it’s so much fun to see some of the events leading up to murder mystery.
As a fan off the show, I thought the main characters, Berry, Veronica, Jughead and Archie, felt like they did at the start off the show. This was quite well done and you will recognize some phrases they use in the show. Do keep in mind that they feel like they did at the start of season 1 and not how they do now, as they’ve all gone through quite the developments. Especially Veronica is pretty different from how we’ve come to know her now. She’s pretty unlikeable in this book.
With Veronica in New York, Betty in LA and with Archie and Jughead’s fall out the characters don’t really interact in this story. I thought that was a pity, since it’s one of the things I love most about the tv show. They all have their own story lines, but they are pretty weak. I liked Betty’s storyline best, but thought the ending was lacking, and it felt like we we’re missing a last chapter. None off the other stories brought anything new unfortunately. As with Betty’s story, there wasn’t really an ending to the book and that was quite disappointing. I think some small changes and one additional chapter for each character could’ve been a huge improvement on the actual story.
Jughead narrates the prologue and epilogue of the story which was a lot of fun. I loved this parallel to the show and it tied it all nicely together. Another really fun detail was the use of mixed media. In between chapters we get to see text messages, emails, and announcements for example. To mention a couple characters, we got to read little snippets of Cheryl, Kevin, Moose, Polly and Jason.
I think this book is aimed at fans of the tv show and I don’t think other readers will enjoy it much as there is little storyline. Unfortunately, fans of the show already know so much about this story. And therefore, they will see some storyline incongruences like I did. Veronica interacts with Nick in New York and some things he said in this novel felt a bit off compared to how we’ve come to know him. The way Veronica and he are leaving things in the novel feels quite different from the first meeting we see in the show. I didn’t think this completely added up. Same with Archie’s storyline, some sequences at the end of his story seemed a bit different from the tv show.
When aiming a story at tv show fans, I think these kind of details are super important and that’s what ultimately made me decide to rate this 3 and a half stars. I did love the mixed media and reading about the characters right before we meet them in the show.

Ich liebe die Serie Riverdale, doch das Buch war nicht so ganz meins. Klar habe ich bessere Einblicke in die Figuren erhalten, doch einige gefielen mir noch weniger als in der Serie. Betty zum Beispiel kann ich gar nicht ausstehen, doch auch Veronica machte es mir im Buch schwer, sie zu mögen.

If this showed me anything, it is that Ronnie and Jughead were complete opposites. I mean, geez, this made me want to cry for Jug. Everyone just dumped on him. His dad. His dad's gang. His best friend. His mom. He had no one. And knowing (from the show) that he is about to lose the theater, so freaking sad.
Meanwhile, Ronnie is such a bitch. I hadn't realized. I knew that she was spoiled before moving to Riverdale, but not like this. I don't know that her 'friends' should have done what they did. That was just too much and kind of unrealistic. I think it would have been more realistic if they'd just posted online about her family drama. But why would Ronnie be so happy to see Nick when he showed up in Riverdale? Makes zero sense.
Of course there's also Archie and his affair with Miss Grundy. I don't feel the least bit bad for him. He's the one that caused his own problems. And I love that in that one scene where she's talking to Ben, presumably another student that she is having an affair with. Archie brought this on himself. But I knew that from the show. There wasn't really anything new about him here.
Betty probably had the newest story here. Her story wasn't as dramatic as Ronnie or Jug's either. It sucks that someone was sabotaging her, but it was just an internship. At the time, I get how important that is. Like she worked really hard for it and during that time. But she wasn't going to be homeless like Jug or lose everything like Ronnie.
Overall, really enjoyed this glimpse of the week before Riverdale begins and looking forward to more stories.

That was just too much and kind of unrealistic. I think it would have been more realistic if they'd just posted online about her family drama. But why would Ronnie be so happy to see Nick when he showed up in Riverdale? Makes zero sense.
Of course there's also Archie and his affair with Miss Grundy. I don't feel the least bit bad for him. He's the one that caused his own problems. And I love that in that one scene where she's talking to Ben, presumably another student that she is having an affair with. Archie brought this on himself. But I knew that from the show. There wasn't really anything new about him here.
Betty probably had the newest story here. Her story wasn't as dramatic as Ronnie or Jug's either. It sucks that someone was sabotaging her, but it was just an internship. At the time, I get how important that is. Like she worked really hard for it and during that time. But she wasn't going to be homeless like Jug or lose everything like Ronnie.
Overall, really enjoyed this glimpse of the week before Riverdale begins and looking forward to more stories.

Les fans de la série y trouveront leur compte, pour ma part je l’ai trouvé anecdotique et peu nécessaire. Par ailleurs, le livre n’est clairement pas accessible à ceux qui n’ont pas vu la série et ne permet pas d’ailleurs de donner envie de la découvrir. Livre « compagnon » de l’univers de Riverdale, on retrouve les personnages avec des storylines sans grand intérêt. Une lecture qui reste agréable.

The writing was decent enough. Not sure if the author really captured the essences of the characters, or if that was done for her by the show. Not much new information. I didn't expect there would be, as this is "the day before" and we're already deep into season 3. I'm a fan of books and comics that are extra and tie in to the original, but not if they're just rehashing things we already know.

it was an ok book but I don't think I would recommend anyone this book. The writing starts off really slow and does not really pick up until the middle of the book and when it did it was still not the best I think it could be. What I would recommend though is the show I would give that five out of five stars.

Persönliche Meinung
Ich gehör ja zu den wenigen die Riverdale bisher nicht gesehen haben und als ich zu dem Buch griff, wusste ich rein gar nichts über die Serie. Nur das sie mir schon ein paarmal von Freunden empfohlen wurde.
Vorneweg kann ich sagen, dass dieses Buch für Fans sicherlich cooler ist, als für das Volk der Unwissenden. Da es doch einige Charaktere hat, besonders Nebencharaktere, die nicht wirklich vorgestellt werden. Es eignet sich aber auch gut als Einstieg und für diejenigen die neugierig sind und das Buch einfach mal so lesen wollen.
Es hat mich allerdings sehr stark an Pretty Little Liars erinnert.
«Warum hatten wir nur so viele Geheimnisse? Und was würde es uns noch kosten, wenn wir sie weiterhin für uns behielten?»
Der Schreibstil war okay, eher unspektakulär und die Charaktere waren... nun ja, mir leider nicht unbedingt sympathisch. Ob sie authentisch (also wie in der Serie) dargestellt wurden, kann ich jetzt nicht beurteilen aber besonders Veronica ist ziemlich unausstehlich. Archie etwas grau, Betty ein bisschen crazy und Jughead... naja der Name sagt für mich schon alles.
Ich weiss gar nicht recht, was ich eigentlich erwartet habe, wurde aber positiv überrasch. Ich mag solche Gossip stories einfach sehr gerne und da entwickelt sich beim Lesen einen regelrechten Suchtfaktor.
Es passiert nicht extrem viel, spitzt sich dann aber zusammen und man (also vor allem ich) möchte nun unbedingt wissen wie es weitergeht und werde die Serie nun schauen.
Das Buch ist erzählt aus vier Sichten: Jughead, Archie, Veronica und Betty, wobei Bettys Teil ein Tagebuch ist. Dazwischen gibt es eMail und SMS Verläufe, Flyer und Zeitungsauschnitte die weitere Geheimnisse preisgeben.

I could easily get into this story thanks to the TV series and the flow of the story. All the characters felt like themselves the majority of time. I think Only Betty and Archie had a couple of moments towards the end that were written a little differently than expected. Overall, this was an easy and fun read.

Reads like a fanfiction - and a bad one at that. Terribly written through and through, doesn't work within the canon of the show, and has a wholly unsatisfying ending. Oof.
