Lumberjanes #1 was an enticing start to what looks like might be a fun story about some rebellious girls who are away at summer camp. It mixes a bit of supernatural mystery with adventure and brave chicks.

Unfortunately, it was a bit disappointing that it was so short at just 27 pages. Just as I was getting a feel for everything, it was over. I liked (I think?) the characters, but the plot was very vague and I have a sneaking suspicion that this is the sort of story that might get dragged out over way more issues than is necessary.

I enjoyed this enough that I'd certainly try the next couple of issues if my library gets around to purchasing them, but I'm not sure I'd invest my own money in this series based on this issue alone.

Badass Female Character score: 5/5 -- there were a bunch of girls kicking some supernatural butt in the middle of the woods at night, and the camp director seems pretty tough.

Sorry I just didn't like this one. I think it is a great concept but it was just trying too hard to be cool and different. I found the dialogue to be ridiculous, I had to check to see if Diablo Cody wrote this...

It was just too much. It was all style and no story, I learned nothing about the characters. Sadly nothing about this issue made me want to read the next one.

4 What the junk STARS
description

Read this comic book for a BookRiot challenge and really enjoyed it, however due to the short nature, I want to devour the entire series in one sitting. The ending left me wanting more, and the characterizations that were already created in 28 pages was brilliant.

Okay who wants to start a Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet's Camp for Hardcore Lady-Types with me?

Good gravy was this book ever a hoot and a holler. I have no earthly idea what was going on in this fever dream of a story but it was all glorious good fun! Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and the stark raving mad Ripley are all bunkmates at summer camp looking for madcap adventure in this incredibly clever, sweet and sour ode to everything from girl power and the value of friendship to the importance of not triggering easily identifiable booby traps in secret caves.

This was a delight but be forewarned that you are getting dropped into the deep end of the swimming pool without water wings and the absurdist thrills never slow down so if manic hijinks aren't your thing I'd suggest looking elsewhere.

But if you can give yourself a moment to find your feet and hit the trail with the Lumberjanes you are in for a rollicking good time.

The art work is as frantic as the story telling and full of boundless joy. Its a bit like a highly skilled grade schooler got into the glue supply again and just let 'er rip. Your practically punched in the face by all the bright colors and fantastical creatures the girls encounter but its all so supremely delightful that you just keep flipping right along!

Maybe I've been a bit free with the five stars lately but it really is so nice to find something like Lumberjanes #1 that sings the praises of girls and friendship and being a total loony because its fun and summers full of adventure and first loves in such a lovely, fantastical way.

This is funny and fun and sincerely joyful. You may not know "what the junk is going on" but it absolutely does not matter.

Man, these people are obsessed with monsters of the three-eyed variety.

Not that that's a bad thing.

Think Girl Scouts, plus monsters, and quippy-ness. Not that the GS don't have quippyness. Or monsters. ;)

Totally engaging and fun and silly and adventures and juuuust a bit dark. But not necessarily a story which made me think too hard.
I lurves the gender representation here, obvs (extra gold star for that), and that's the cementing, standup-and-look-at-me awesome of this story.

The illustrations are a bit inexact for my taste, but the colors are vibrant, and most of it is easy enough to follow. I like some of the crayon and spray paint effects used in spots.

I want to know MORE about these characters - and not just in passing. I want to know about their homes, their day-to-day life outside of camp, why they came here in the first place. I don't want to piece their stories together in inference and side comments. But maybe that's just me.

I can't wait to meet a kid who's reading this. Definitely taking it to the P&P.

Edit 1/11/2016: Also ended up booktalking it at the middle schools. SO fun.

I liked the illustrations, they were nice and cool. But, to be honest, I have no idea what happened, it felt confusing, jumpy. The story did not work for me.

Oh great, what a short review.

Ok...5 girls, I can't remember their names. One had a hat, one was cute, one was tall, one street, can't remember the next one. They are girl scouts, they find some weird paranormal stuff, stuff happens.

Anyway, good illustrations. But will not read more.

I needed a small pick-me-up between books and I thought, "I need a good graphic novel". So Lumberjanes called my name from my shelves and saved the day. This was awesome! I need the next one like, yesterday.

This book has a good range of characters, great dialogue, amazing artwork and a plot that kept me engaged, laughing and also turning the pages.

If you like graphic novels, jump on Lumberjanes!!!!

Our library needs to seriously get with the program. This is the only volume they have, even though it looks like most of the installments were published in 2014 and 2015. On its own, it's not very impressive. There are too many characters (some with weird speech affectations), and we jump into the end of the action... only to be told what happened earlier. It's an illustrated story, for goodness sake; if this isn't the place to show rather than tell, I don't know what is.

The illustrations are cute, but nothing special. Maybe I just didn't have time to get attached. I actually like the backgrounds better than the characters themselves.

Since these installments are short, I wouldn't mind reading some more to see if the characters or story grew on me. But I wasn't that enamoured with this one to want to seek out the rest. If the library gets the sequels in the future, I might pick them up. Otherwise, I probably won't bother.

This comic was absolutely adorable- and a fantastic first issue! I'm hooked on the art style & character dialogue already. It's quirky & funny, I caught myself showing a friend every other page in amusement. It feels like a web comic with a modern art style that flows well from pane to pane.

Rounding up to 4 stars because I enjoy Noelle Stevenson.

The first installment of Lumberjanes (love the clever title) was a pretty fun graphic novel, summer camp adventure. I think the girls are all drawn out so well and make fun, unique characters. They do get a little annoying sometimes though...just a little too silly with their exclamations. Its just not in my tastes.

Personally, I am someone who spent summers at camp and I know about those adventures with creatures that go bump in the night and canoeing on the river and sneaking to other cabins. But the best memories of all are the ones with my closest friends. So for the sake of the cliffhanger this book ended on, I am interested to see where issue #2 goes.

A group of adorably quirky girls discover that their summer camp isn't terribly normal. They, however, seem very much up to the challenge.
I loved it. The banter among the campers is fast and funny and it's easy to fall in love with all the characters immediately.

I borrowed this on overdrive but my library literally only has this first issue and that’s it- it was good but it feels like it’s only just getting started and wasn’t enough to get properly into the story or characters. Just gotta wait for the library to get the rest in now!

I'd always meant to pick this graphic novel series up, so I'm glad I finally did! The characters were all adorable and had their own individual personalities which I greatly enjoyed. I also liked the mix of supernatural creatures in a summer camp. It reminded me of my elementary school girl scout days.

I knocked off a star because there was no real connection or flow between the chapters/issues, and new stuff just kept happening randomly. I'm hoping that the next volume has a more coherent plot, especially given the events at the end of the first issue.

The thing I enjoyed the most about this volume was the artwork. I'll definitely be looking into more from the illustrator in the near future.

All in all, it was super quick, lighthearted read! I finished it in around 45 minutes at work, if that tells you anything! I'd recommend it to anyone who is wanting to dive into the world of graphic novels. It's a great introduction!

Friendship to the MAX!

If you looked up “girl power” in the dictionary, the cover of this graphic novel is what would show up. The Lumberjanes are a group of five girls who are attending a summer camp modeled after Girl Scouts. They are a diverse group- with a nice representation of body types, clothing styles, age and sexuality.

This is a magical realism tale, for the girls are immediately thrown into situations that have supernatural animals, and later they have an Indiana Jones-type adventure. The girls aren’t fazed by any of it, although their older cabin leader doesn’t ever seem to see any of the creatures the girls do. But then there is the hip, tattooed camp director who seemed to be in on the mysteries.

Two of the five girls are a couple, and one girl seems gender fluid, but none of it is over-emphasized. Instead, it’s just a group of friends who work well together and always have each other's back. Isn’t that what we all should have in a friend group? The only complaint I have is that sometimes the dialogue is trying too hard. The girls love to throw famous people into their conversations as slang words- “What in the Joan Jett are you doing” and "Good Juliette Gordon Low, we’re allowed to have something good happen once in awhile”. It was funny once, but then became too trite.

The author and co-creator of this story is Noelle Stevenson, who also wrote and illustrated the appealing graphic novel Nimona. When I first read Nimona, Stevenson’s artwork was new to me. But as I have read more graphic novels in the last few years, I have noticed this cartoony hipster style is similar to the artwork of Faith Erin Hicks, Emily Carroll and Molly Osertag. Although the illustrations are credited to Brooke Allen, the characters are so very Stevenson, that I think Allen had to draw based on the template that Stevenson designed. But the bold bright colors with a modern look will be a draw for young readers. And that’s why I picked it to read with the middle schoolers at my library for our next graphic novels book club. The story ends on a cliffhanger, and I and other readers will definitely want to read the next in the series to find out what adventures the Lumberjanes get into next!

I'm still recovering from an upper respiratory infection and I wasn't in the mood to read an actual book. So I decided to read a comic/graphic book. I REALLY liked this but my only complaint is that it's only 27 pages? I know there's like 49 books in the series but I wish the author would of combined it with another one. Other than that I have nothing bad to say! The illustrations were adorable, I love the characters, and it was silly enough to cheer me up. No clue if I'll check out the other books but I read this one in like 5 minutes. Short read but worth it!
