Seeing as I adored the first four series in the Mackenzies and McBrides series, I was excited to read these novellas. I will say, I definitely enjoyed A Mackenzie Clan Gathering more than A Mackenzie Yuletide. The Yuletide novella was cute following the children of the Mackenzie siblings, but I loved how the Gathering novella mainly focused on Ian. I love Ian so much, so I absolutely loved his story trying to uncover who stole precious art from their home. Him and Beth are adorable and I loved seeing glimpses of them together again in that novella. Overall, if you're a fan of the Mackenzie series, you have to pick these fun Christmas novellas up!

TITLE: A Mackenzie Clan Christmas
AUTHOR: Jennifer Ashley
SERIES: Mackenzies & McBrides
RELEASE DATE: October 29, 2019
GENRE: Historical Romance
RATING: 4 Stars
CLIFFHANGER: No

Ian Mackenzie stole my heart years ago and is still to date one of my top favorite HR heroes. In this little anthology spanning two novellas we are reunited with the whole family. The first story - A MACKENZIE YULETIDE is - is completely new and has the family chasing a ghost in their ancestral home and Ian looking to surprise his Beth.

It's amazing how far Ian has come and it's no surprise that he always steels the show with his intensity. I loved seeing his and Beth's kids and Cam, Mac, Daniel and Hart with all their loved ones. You almost feel like you are included in their merriment and hospitality and you're invited to sit at their table and share a meal.

The second story A MACKENZIE CLAN GATHERING was released last year and is a bonus, so that you can enjoy twice the Mackenzie goodness if you haven't been able to read this novella yet. It's just as good and heart warming as the first story. For those who have read A MACKENZIE CLAN GATHERING, you can buy A MACKENZIE YULETIDE separately.

I always love catching up with this family, they really hold a special place in my heart. I wouldn't recommend this to someone who has never read the first books in this series, too many names are mentioned and the family dynamic only makes sense if you know how it came about. But this is the perfect time to catch up with these books - even after all these years they haven't lost their poignancy. There is also an introduction of a new character who I believe will be getting a story.

I loved this compilation and I hope I can soon read all the books in this series I haven't been able to yet. For longtime fans this is the perfect, sweet read for a cozy evening.
My lad and lass, Ian thought. There was another lass waiting at home, along with Beth, his light, his love.

A Holiday-themed bonus! Two tales under one cover! A MACKENZIE YULETIDE, a new release and A MACKENZIE CLAN GATHERING, one many have read before, but will enjoy, once again.

Jennifer Ashley’s Mackenzie family is a group of wonderful characters who know how to keep families together with love, loyalty and a keen sense of humor. If you are looking for some quick reading that will gear you up for the holidays, family and you want to start out on a high note, these are two novellas that will do just that.

I received a complimentary ARC edition from Berkley! This is my honest and voluntary review.

A Mackenzie Yuletide (ends at 37% of book)

Oh fun! A Mackenzie Yuletide was delightful. A whole herd of Mackenzies and family of all ages coming together for Christmas and New Years. Hunting down gifts for one another, hunting down a ghost that's suddenly haunting the estate. I loved seeing everyone. All of the original couples and now their children growing up. It was sweet and funny and overwhelming. Just what Christmas with a huge family should be. A little added mystery, well, two added mysteries, kept things even livelier.

A Mackenzie Clan Gathering-- this is an old release that I read back when. It was a fun read and enjoyable. I didn't read it again with this release, though. It does take up the majority of this current release.

A Mackenzie Clan Christmas is a duo of Christmas novellas from the Mackenzie series focusing on the original brothers from the beginning of the series. So, if like me you need an Ian Mackenzie fix – the hero of The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie the first book in the series – this is the perfect set of novellas for you. If you haven’t read the series yet, this is a really bad place to start and I recommend checking out the reading order and starting at the beginning and the aforementioned, and fabulous, Lord Ian Mackenzie.

If you’re a fan of the series already, you will recognise the title of one of the novellas – A Mackenzie Clan Gathering – and that’s because this was originally released in 2015. However, A Mackenzie Yuletide is a brand new novella in the series.

A Mackenzie Yuletide

The Mackenzie brothers and their large families have all gathered for Christmas at Kilmorgan. However, they may not be the only ones…a ghost also seems to have taken up residence in the ducal halls. I am already madly in love with all the characters in this series and having these slices of life/novellas just makes me fall in love with them more.

In A Mackenzie Yuletide we see the Mackenzies almost decades after we left checked in, the children are now teenagers and our heroes and heroines are happily into middle age and enjoying their families. This was a really lovely story, laced with fun and family, an absolutely perfect Christmas read. I also really hope it is a way to introduce a new generation of Mackenzie heroes and heroines.

A Mackenzie Clan Gathering

I actually reviewed this way back in 2015…my feelings about this novella haven’t changed!

A Mackenzie Clan Christmas is two novellas in which one is new and the other is a reprint. The new one is called A Mackenzie Yuletide and the other is A Mackenzie Clan Gathering which was published in 2015, and previously reviewed. I’ll be reviewing the new story, A Mackenzie Yuletide.

The family is gathering for the Christmas holiday and Hogmanay and they are dealing with not one but two mysteries. First, Mac Mackenzie thinks he saw a ghost. Is this a prank or something haunting the house? Ian Mackenzie is looking for the perfect gift for his wife. What he wants he gets. Unfortunately, what he wants has been stolen and disappeared.

I’m a huge fan of the Mackenzie’s and when there is a chance to read another story I am all in. I love that this story featured the next generation having a big part in this story now that they are all a little older and getting a voice in the family gatherings. Hearing their POV is heartening to hear how their parents and their aunts and uncles, have such a huge influence on what they are becoming. What’s even better is when Ian is featured. Ian is on the spectrum and very interesting to read his thoughts. Together they figure out both mysteries and find more family along the way. A new reader might be a bit lost with so many characters introduced in this story, so I would recommend going to the beginning and reading Ian’s story, The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie.

You’ll fall in love with this highlander and his brothers. For old fans like me, you’ll eat it up and cross your fingers that there will be more to come with the next generation of Mackenzie’s. Spending time with the Mackenzie’s at Christmas time is always a treat.

“A Mackenzie Yuletide” (Mackenzies & McBrides, Book 11.5)
A ghostly visitor, a missing artifact, and multiple generations of Mackenzies getting in on both hunts? Sign me up! “A Mackenzie Yuletide” is a delightful Christmastime romp featuring one of my favorite families.

It’s December 1898 and Mac Mackenzie is at Kilmorgan painting when he spies a ghost. His siblings and their various offspring are determined to settle their supernatural debate over the existence of ghosts by catching the specter. Meanwhile, Ian Mackenzie is equally determined to get the perfect Hogmanay gift for his wife, Beth. But the priceless antique necklace has been stolen and he’s not the only person – or even the only Mackenzie – searching for it. Both mysteries are delightful, mostly because various Mackenzies team up to solve the cases.

Ian has always been a scene-stealer for me, so I was delighted to catch up with both him and his beloved Beth. Their love for one another and their children is as strong as ever and spending time with them was pure joy. And speaking of their children, author Jennifer Ashley gives an exciting peek into the minds of some of the Mackenzie children. The only downside to this? I desperately hope the younger Mackenzies get books of their own one day because they are as fascinating as their parents. Cam’s daughter, Gavina, intrigued me most of all and her determination never to wed means she’s practically begging for a book of her own.

The Mackenzie clan is bright, boisterous, and unique. The romantic and familial bonds are on full display in “A Mackenzie Yuletide” and made me smile more than once. I’m so glad I got to go on another adventure with the Mackenzies and I desperately hope Ms. Ashley has more stories in store for them.

“A Mackenzie Clan Gathering” (Mackenzies & McBrides, Book 8.5)
“A Mackenzie Clan Gathering” is a beautiful story brimming with emotion. Fans of the Mackenzies & McBrides series won’t want to miss this novella, for it’s sure to make you fall in love with the Mackenzies all over again.

Ian, Beth, and their children are the only Mackenzies in residence at Kilmorgan when thieves break in, stealing a good portion of the duke’s art collection. Ian is determined to track the culprits before the rest of his family shows up, but he’s sidetracked by the arrival of Beth’s late husband’s brother, a man who claims he can cure Ian of his “madness.” Ian and Beth are two of my all-time favorite characters, and in “A Mackenzie Clan Gathering” we get to see how they’ve grown over the years they’ve been married. Their bond is stronger than ever, but when Ian is tempted with the possibility of being “cured,” it just about broke my heart, especially because he wants to do so for Beth’s sake. Of course, we know two things: (1) Beth loves him just the way he is and (2) Ian isn’t mad, nor does he need to be “cured” – he has Asperger’s, decades before anyone knows what that is. What follows I’ll leave readers to discover, but I will say that we get to see more interesting things about the Mackenzie family. Most importantly, Ms. Ashley touched my emotions showing the deep bonds of love – romantic and familial – among the Mackenzie clan.

The investigation into who is behind the art theft takes some interesting turns, tying into the series in an unexpected way. And though “A Mackenzie Clan Gathering” is primarily Ian and Beth’s story, other family members do get their moments to shine. I’ll never get tired of seeing Hart with Ian; the duke’s love for his youngest brother never fails to grab me and revisiting this novella made me want to re-read their books all over again. If you’re new to the series, don’t worry – you’ll still be able to follow along. But truly, this story is probably best enjoyed if you’re already invested in the Mackenzie & McBrides series. I absolutely loved revisiting Ian and Beth and I hope Ms. Ashley continues to gift readers with more glimpses into what happens after happily ever after for the entire Mackenzie clan.

A Mackenzie Clan Christmas is perfect for any fan of Ms. Ashley’s Mackenzie family. It’s lovely to catch up with such beloved characters after their happily ever after, to see the bonds of love and family strengthen as their number grows. Both novellas warmed my heart and made me smile; they’re the perfect holiday reads that you can enjoy all year long.

Seasonal Mackenzies! Joy!

Two Christmas season stories with my favorite MacKenzie man taking a lead role, Ian with his wife Beth and their three children.

A Mackenzie Yuletide
At two in the morning Mac is painting in his room at the top of Kilmorgan Castle when he's disturbed by what appears to be the ghost of a woman. He pursues the trailing apparition without success. Later, the younger Mackenzies decide to help, after a humorous start.
Ian wants to purchase a special present for his Beth for Hogmanay. A heavy gold "antique necklace with intricately worked loops of gold and hung with emeralds and lapis lazuli." Unfortunately its disappeared. Ian brings his unwavering focus to bear on solving the problem, not realizing that his son Jamie is going toe to toe with him trying to find the piece.

A Mackenzie Clan Gathering
I had read this previously and a second reading in no way diminished my enjoyment. Thieves break into Kilmorgan Castle and steal Hart's art collection. Ian wakes sensing something amiss. His first thoughts are for Beth and his children. The artworks are discovered abandoned. This is only the first attack. It will be Ian who finally works out the mystery. Only after plenty of happenings though. The turning up of Beth's first husband's brother, John Ackerley adds another dimension.

All the family make appearances, after all they are gathering at Kilmorgan Castle for the season.
The redeemed illegitimate half brother to the Mackenzies, Lloyd Fellows, now a chief superintendent at Scotland Yard, is involved in both stories. Wouldn't have it any other way!

My next Christmas read this year gave me all of the charm I wanted! These novellas actually came out last year but I was a bit of a grinch at the time and didn't get into the Christmas magic. This year I'm actually needing those yuletide family moments, as many of us are facing a year where time with our loved ones may happen a bit different than normal.

A Mackenzie Yuletide is full of family and warmth and cozy feelings, as the four Mackenzie brothers convene with their wives and kids at Kilmorgan at Christmas. Longtime fans of this series and new fans will find this heartwarming! It takes place quite awhile after the last book, so if you have been following the Mackenzie Clan you'll find babies are now teenagers and more! I suspect this new generation of Mackenzie's on the cusp of finding their own love stories may bring the series to the next gen!

A Mackenzie Clan Gathering is not recent. This short story takes place not quite a decade before A Mackenzie Yuletide and came out several years back. The family is back at Kilmorgan to celebrate Hart's birthday. There is a bit of a mystery as a burglar steals some art from the family home.

There is something magical about this group and I certainly got into the spirit! A great read for those needing a little escape into holiday family fun this year!

It’s been a while since I visited this series and it didn’t help that I’d read a series by another author set around the same time period, featuring (among others) a Mackenzie and a chief inspector or something with a bone to pick with someone.

Translation: I forgot some of the extended people completely. I *think* I’ve read them all buuuuutt.....

Both tales were continuations of Ian and Beth’s story, and here I must say the publisher did them no favors as the first one is set 5 years after the second. Why would you do that? Why? I’d also add that it seems strange that as alert as Ian seems to be, he never heard the “ghost” prowling around in the first one. Eh, unimportant really as the real reason one reads these is to revisit the family.

A MacKenzie Yuletide is an all new MacKenzie Family novella!

As usual, the MacKenzies descend on Kilmorgan Castle to celebrate the Yuletide season and Hogmanay. Mac is up in his studio painting when a noise disturbs his concentration, he goes to investigate and finds a ghost! But as he approaches her, she disappears, unconcerned, Mac goes to bed and mentions it to the family at breakfast. Some of the children, decide to build a ghost trap – no sure if the ghost is in fact a ghost or if it is another break in attempt.

Uninterested in ghosts, Ian is consumed with tracking down a necklace that he wants to give to Beth for Hogmanay, but the trail he followed has hit a wall and he calls in his half-brother Lloyd Fellows, a chief supervisor at Scotland Yard to help him.

Ian’s son Jamie is also trying to find the necklace in hopes of impressing his father. He gets his cousin Gavina and his father’s valet Curry to help him. Jamie and Gavina are pulled into the ghost hunt when Jamie sees the ghost after Gavina breaks in to Ian’s study.
With mysteries to solve and all the MacKenzies in attendance, this will turn out to be a very interesting and exciting Yuletide!!

I loved this novella, it was entertaining, well written, interesting and a lot of fun. Catching up with all the MacKenzies and seeing their children growing up was heartwarming and satisfying. And as always, I loved reading about Ian and Beth, they truly are one of my all-time favorite fictional couples and I never get tired of reading about them. This was a really wonderful read and while it is set at Christmastime, I didn’t really consider it a “holiday” read.

The Mackenzie Clan Gathering is the second novella in this collection and it was released in 2016, the blurb reads as follows:

Ian Mackenzie is awakened at Kilmorgan Castle one night to find robbers stealing the priceless art collection of his oldest brother, Hart. Since Ian and Beth are the only ones in resident at Kilmorgan at the moment, Ian decides he must find the art and the culprits before the family shows up for Hart's birthday gathering. With Inspector Fellows and Beth, he investigates, though Ian is somewhat worried by Beth's late husband's brother, a retired missionary, who decides to visit. Does John Ackerley hold the "cure" to Ian's madness? And can Ian discover what has happened to Hart's treasures, and who is targeting the Mackenzies before the enemy strikes again?

Return to Kilmorgan Castle to visit the Victorian branch of the Mackenzie family, and catch up on the brothers and friends, their children, and their lives.

Well, this was a delight! Reader be warned, this is two novellas set in the Mackenzie series world, and only the first story is new. The second novella was published previously. That didn’t take away from my enjoyment in the least. Somehow, between books, I forget how much I love the crazy Mackenzie clan. They’re loud, Scottish, scandalous, brash, and I adore each and every one of them.

The first novella is a holiday reunion and, hopefully, an introduction to the new era of Mackenzie children. There are lots of them, but I can already see the lead-in of a new generation, and I can’t wait. There are lots of Mackenzie cousins just about ready for their own books. I loved the real-life innovations Ms. Ashley is allowing her characters to explore, it adds real depth to the overall story.

The second novella was equally as delightful. It’s mostly all about Ian with a little bit of mystery on the side, but he’s one of my favorite heroes of all-time, so I liked the focus. I also think that Ms. Ashley does a seamless job of imparting a little bit of history. Overall, if you’re looking for two quick little pick me ups, this is the perfect collection for you!

There is nothing better then a book full of Ian Mackenzie! He is my all time book boyfriend and these two short stories have all the reasons that I fell head over heels for Ian Mackenzie.
“A Mackenzie Yuletide”
A lovely Christmas story with all the family gathered and the main storyline is Ian looking for the perfect gift for Beth. It was so much fun getting to know Ian’s children, Jamie, Belle and Megan better throughout this story. The girls are very charming and Jamie is a true Mackenzie make.
“A Mackenzie Clan Gathering”
This story revolves mostly around Ian and his so called madness. Ian is such a wonderful man, he loves his wife, children and family so much that he’s willing to do anything to cure his madness. This story is darker then the fist one but no less as fabulous.
The things that Ian recalls during his so called cure are heart wrenchingly sad that my heart broke for him.
As I said before Ian is my all time book boyfriend and I think he is perfect just the way he is and I hope you find him perfect as well.

I’m a huge JA fan and *cough* though I have all the Mackenzie books, I, er, haven’t exactly, er, READ them, you see. Yet. But I know they’re there, and this one makes me want to pull them all out of Mt. TBR and begin a glom. Alas, Sebastian St. Cyr #8 is calling my name (quite rudely actually!) and I can feel his steely eye glint for keeping him and Hero waiting. I’ll get to you Ian Mackenzie and clan see if I don’t. Just, er, not right at this exact minute.

Wow! Lots of excitement packed into this novella! There's unwelcome house guests, home invasions, theft of priceless artifacts, and the kidnapping of a Mackenzie grandchild!
If you think Ian Mackenzie was a madman before, the kidnappers haven't a clue what "crazy" really means, if Ian's child is not returned to him unharmed!

Christmas stories, “between-the-numbers” novellas, Halloween or Hogmanay ghost stories–all are great features in series fiction. This little “Yuletide” novella features a titled Lady who rides astride–on an early motorcycle! A jewel thief, a ghost, a host of brothers and cousins all living in one huge highlands castle and much, much, more.
My Interest

I found this book, like so many others, trolling through the available e-audio books on my library’s various e-book collections.
The Story

The various young Mackenzie cousins are hunting a supposed ghost in their midst. Meanwhile, their Uncle Ian has a great gift for his beloved wife this Hogmanay. Too bad a thief gets it first. But will Lady Violet ride herd on the thief in the snow of the highlands on her motorcycle? You betcha!
My Thoughts

I’d never heard of the series, and sadly, would likely have passed it up entirely if this book hadn’t been so short! Wow–what I would have missed! This is a loving family, loaded, living in a castle, and enjoying their lives–at least in this little go round. Even better, unless I missed it being distracted in traffic, the author got the titles right! If this series is entirely available on audio, I may just start at book one and give it a listen!
My Verdict
3.5

YES! Revisiting the MacKenzie Clan is so much fun. This is a book of Novellas and it took me back to the wonderful highlander world Jennifer Ashley created. I read the first few books in this series years ago and absolutely loved them, so this was so much fun. I just really love how she writes highlander romance. The kinship, friends, and family just warm the heart--which is perfect for a Christmas read! I'd definitely recommend this whole series!

These two short stories feature the whole Mackenzie clan. I loved seeing all the characters again, and what they have been up to. The two stories are set about 5 years apart and I enjoyed noting the differences in what's been going on. There's a little mystery to solve in each but the main theme is how the Mackenzies are still very much in love and how important family is to them. Very enjoyable.

A Mackenzie Yuletide

December 1898

Mac Mackenzie, the families artistic family member, painting a landscape late one evening. He is surprised when he sees an apparition though most of the family don’t believe him. They ruin his fantasy of talking to one of their MacKenzie ancestors. As his sister-in-law the Duchess and younger family members go on a ghost hunt using trick photography to help catch a thief! As they want to make sure it isn’t a thief or someone threatening their lives. Especially with all the expensive art work of the Duke of Kilmorgan’s. Plus Ian’s priceless Ming pottery, as well as priceless jewels and other items the family owns.

Ian always wants to get his wife an extra special present for his Beth. Yet he hears someone may have stolen the priceless item he wants. So he goes on a different type of hunt to get a unique gift from a worthless collector. Will he be able to locate the piece? Read and find out.

This novella was absolutely magnificent from start to finish. It’s another beautiful story with the family I absolutely love. I love that the author give a quick detailed explanation of each relationship. I personally didn’t need it as I have read each book and remember each story. It is great for first time readers or people who may have forgotten each story.

I love The Mackenzies so much though Ian and Mac are my favorites! You can’t help but fall in love with this beautiful family. The perfect story to get you into the Christmas spirit and remembering that the holiday is about love and family. I have been reading this series since it began and hopes it never ends.

I highly recommend the book as A MacKenzie Yuletide is absolutely perfect!

A Mackenzie Clan Gathering

One of my favorite reads of 2016 and fun to read again!

Jennifer Ashley pens another riveting beautiful heart-melting story that you wish would never end! It will give you chills and melt your heart at the same time! Loved this quick paced, extraordinary, unique and extremely entertaining read I could not put down!

Scotland, 1892

All the Mackenzie's and MacBride's were getting ready to travel to Kilmorgan Castle which is Hart Mackenzie, the Duke of Kiomorgan's residence to celebrate Hart's Birthday the following week. So far his youngest brother Ian, his wife Beth and children and a skeleton staff were the only ones in residence. Ian, the one some cruel or ignorant people refer as mad or crazy, of course if it was present day it would be called Asperger's syndrome or ASD. Unfortunately, it is still only the 19th century and it will still be quite some time when physicians and the medical community can give people like Ian, the correct diagnosis. This always impresses me how Ms. Ashley brilliantly and also tenderly tackles the subject and of course Beth his wife is his biggest supporter, his salvation, his everything! I think also, this is why Ian is definitely the favorite Mackenzie among readers. Through Ian's special qualities and his senses he hears things and and is in-tune to sounds most are not. Why he wakes up alert and hears the intruders, he knew it wasn't the usual sounds in the house he grew up in and he naturally goes after them to protect his family and nearly gets himself killed in the process. Unfortunately Ian feels responsible as the intruders makes off with a good portion of Hart's priceless art collection! Ian decided to go after them, especially when someone tampers with Ian's distillery where they make the profitable Mackenzie malt whiskey.

As things were not already topsy turfy enough, Beth invites her missionary brother-in-law of her deceased first husband whom has a secret agenda! He tells Ian secretly that he can cure him of his madness or at least try. Ian has dreams of being what he calls normal for Beth he has yet to understand that she loves the man he is and always will and does not want a different man. What will it take for Ian to finally accept or understand this and let go of this unfounded guilt he has. I personally blame his cruel father for a lot of these feelings besides the ignorant finger pointers calling him insane throughout his life. Except we all know Ian is not mad or insane! Lots of action, adventure, drama and heart pulling scenes that gives readers chills. Beautiful of course, seeing how Beth and Ian still love each other as much as ever of not more with their three children who adore him, being together over a decade now. I had goose bumps and tears rolling down my cheeks during certain scenes as Ian and his family definitely does that to me and I love how Beth is ready to fight for her man no matter who it is. I also love how Beth has taught him so much about love, life and what really is important. Ian now understands a stolen art collection, even his Ming China collection, are just objects and objects can be replaced, people cannot. He understands the safety of Beth and their children Jamie 11, Belle 10 and Megan 7 is all that matters. Afterall it is what completes Ian and make him whole.

Lots of action, surprises, mystery, suspense, adventure, love and emotion as always and of course fans of the Mackenzies and MacBrides will truly delighted with this spectacular story centering on Ian and Beth. Being a long time fan of the series I was not disappointed or surprised and another superbly written story that touched my heart and captured my soul. I read this in one sitting and be prepared to fall in love with Ian Mackenzie all over again!

I absolutely loved this riveting, charming, amazingly brilliant page turner and highly recommend "A Mackenzie Clan Gathering" by Jennifer Ashley. I can't compliment it enough as I was completely dazzled and enchanted as I totally loved it! ❤️

It’s always a pleasure to join the Mackenzie clan any time of the year but at Christmas it seems that much more perfect. A Mackenzie clan Christmas features two novellas. One new story and one previously released. Jennifer Ashley has a knack for writing about families and I’ll have to say the Mackenzies are quite fascinating. Both stories feature Ian Mackenzie, who happens to be my favorite Mackenzie man. Don’t miss this chance to catch up with the clan, see how the next generation is coming along and maybe catch a ghost or a robber or both. 😉

What I liked:

I always enjoy a novella. It’s a quick visit to a world and characters that you are either already familiar with from longer books or it’s an introduction to the writing and style of a new author. I’ve been a fan of this series for long time so this is like a visit with friends. Like getting to catch up on all the gossip and what’s happening with the family. I loved how Ashley was able to just draw the reader back in to Kilmorgan Castle and into the clan.

The first novella in this one is called, “A Mackenzie Yuletide.” It’s a new tale about the clan featuring my favorite leading man Ian and this time we get to see how the next generation compares. There’s a bit of a mystery and a ghost. Readers will love seeing how Ian’s love for Beth and his children has evolved. I really enjoyed this one. It showed how inquisitive and engaging the children of the brothers were and definitely makes the reader hope one day they will get their own books. Especially Ian’s son Jamie. And Mac painting in his studio in just his kilt... Oh my! Lol 😂

The second novella is a repeat release. “ A Mackenzie Clan Gathering,” was released a few years ago but was still a nice refresher from the past. It is set before the events in, “A Mackenzie Yuletide.”There has been a robbery at Kilmorgan Castle and some of Hart’s priceless art collection has been taken. Again this story primarily focuses on Ian, which I certainly won’t complain about. He is a wonderful hero. He is eccentric to just the right degree and always up for a challenge. I love reading about him.

As with all the books in this series, there is always an air of mystery to them. It’s something that really adds to the stories and gives the reader a secondary focus besides just the romance. The story arc of Ian’s “madness” also gives the reader a different angle. Ashley has done a wonderful job of adding the right ingredients to produce a world that is both endearing and very engaging.

What I didn’t:

I can’t find too much wrong with any of Jennifer Ashley’s work. With a novella there’s always a double edged sword. It’s a quick trip. And I am always left wanting more when I read them. But also, it’s a quick trip which is easy to read when you don’t have time for a whole novel. I love these characters so much I would probably enjoy even a paragraph about them.

Bottom Line:

What’s not to like about four Scottish brothers who live in a castle? Not much! “A Mackenzie Clan Christmas,” hit the spot for me in my holiday reading. Family, mystery, ghosts, robbers, a little bit of madness. Now that’s interesting!

A MACKENZIE YULETIDE
5, warm
The entire extended Mackenzie family is gathering at Kilmorgan to celebrate the Christmas holiday together. The four brothers – Hart, Cam, Mac, and Ian, are now well into their middle years, but are still passionately in love with their wives. Their children are all growing up, and it won’t be long before they are finding their own loves.

This year, Ian has seen pictures of an antique necklace which he wants to purchase for his wife, Beth. He’s frustrated because the necklace has been stolen, and even with all the resources at his disposal, he’s been unable to track it down. Ian’s son Jamie, now fifteen, has learned of his father’s quest, and wants to find the necklace himself, then present it as a gift to his parents. Jamie wants to prove to his father that he’s capable and intelligent. The hunt for the necklace leads to some adventures for several members of the family.

For those unfamiliar with the Mackenzie family, Ian has Asperger’s Syndrome, which has caused many people to consider him mad. In reality, he’s brilliant, focused, determined, and has a photographic memory. Social interaction is another cup of tea, however, as Ian is uncomfortable around people he doesn’t know, and has trouble actually meeting anyone’s eyes. Over the years Ian has come to be much more comfortable with his family, and in particular, gazes at his wife and children directly, and with a fierce love shining from his eyes.

A MACKENZIE YULETIDE is full of warmth and family love. I’ve followed all of the Mackenzie stories, and I feel as if I know them, and this visit with my favorite characters felt like reconnecting with my own family. I have always loved and had a soft spot for Ian, in particular, as he endured such trauma as a child, and I encourage everyone to read his story in THE MADNESS OF LORD IAN MACKENZIE. As the years have passed, the brothers’ marriages and love have just grown stronger. It’s poignant to see the babies now becoming young adults. This latest installment of the Mackenzie family saga is a lovely and heartwarming read which left me with a satisfying feeling of contentment for this fictional family that feels like part of my own.

A MACKENZIE CLAN GATHERING
4.5, warm
This short story has been previously published, and takes place about six years before A MACKENZIE YULETIDE. The extended family is gathering together, this time to celebrate Hart’s birthday. There is a mystery involved, as well as an unscrupulous stranger, who insists he can cure Ian’s “madness.” I originally reviewed this story for Fresh Fiction, and the review belongs to their site. This book has the new novella 'A Mackenzie Yuletide' and an old novella from 2015 'A Mackenzie Clan Gathering.' Both are enjoyable light reads full of family and love with a little bit of mystery and humor.

A Mackenzie Yuletide - Story 4/5 stars, Heat 2/5 stars
A Christmas story with all of the Mackenzie's and their children. While Ian is trying to acquire roman necklace for Beth for Hogmany, it has disappeared and he is determined to discover it's whereabouts. Ian's son is equally determined to acquire to give as a gift to both his parents and enlists his cousins for help. In the meantime Mac discovers what seems to be a ghost at Kilmorgan and the other half of the family works to uncover the truth of the matter.

This is nice light hearted read, revisiting the Mackenzies and getting to know their children as the solve the two mysteries.

The MacKenzie Clan Gathering - Story 4/5 stars, Heat 4/5 stars
While Ian and Beth were staying at Kilmorgan Castle, Ian stumbles upon robbers. After the theft Ian discovers several casks of whiskey ruined, and nasty rumor's against the Mackenzies, leading Ian and family down the path to solve the mystery. We also get to meet Beth's brother-in-law a retired missionary, who hopes to cure Ian of his 'madness.'

This is a short, little mystery, solved of course by Ian, sprinkled with all the Mackenzies as they gather for Hart's birthday. I enjoy this series and would call it a 'Highland Pleasure' lite read. It was sad to see Ian doubt himself at John Ackerley offer's to 'cure' him and he makes the attempt. While everything ends happily it seemed a bit off that Ian would doubt himself like that.

A Mackenzie Clan Christmas is a beautiful book with novellas of the Mackenzie family through different periods of their lives.

I love how Jennifer Ashley packs in the family, love, and drama into this book. This is my first time reading about the Mackenzie family and I already fell in love with them.

A Mackenzie Yuletide is all about the family gathering for Christmas. in Kilmorgan. It is set in 1896, and the family is facing a debate about ghosts. We see Ian Mackenzie who is on his journey to finding Beth, his wife, the perfect Hogmanay gift. The author ties these two mysteries together to make a suspenseful Christmasy read.

There is a novella in the book called A Mackenzie Glan Gathering that gave me all the feels. It focuses on the growth of characters Beth and Ian. Ian is looking to be 'cured' of his madness. It was beautiful to see how much Ian is willing to go through always putting his love for Beth and their family at the forefront.

As a whole, the stories were great and full of Christmas magic vibes. I would highly recommend this book to fans of the series and readers who enjoy character development!
