A new kind of hero in the Old West tradition, Perley Gates is as honest and good as his heavenly name. But don’t make him mad. Because when Perley Gates gets mad, people get hurt.
Once every year, Perley Gates and his brothers lead the Triple-G crew on its annual cattle drive. It’s a treacherous journey along the Great Western Trail, with a herd of two-thousand cows on one side and many opportunities for trouble on the other. This year, trouble shows up in the form of a beautiful young woman, her little baby, and her bizarre traveling companion—a colorful old cuss who goes by the name of Possom Smith. They’re heading to a settlement called Butcher Bottom, and risking their necks to get there. Perley—being the gentleman he is—offers to escort the trio to their destination. But there are a few minor details they “forgot” to tell Perley . . .
The woman is a widow whose husband had enemies. The old man is hiding a small fortune that might get them killed. And Perley is stuck in the middle trying to decide who’s good, who’s bad—and who deserves to die first . . .

A neat and fun western with an interesting character that goes by Perley Gates. I really enjoyed the ride in this one. In some instances the book did start to feel like one thing after another just kept happening but I kept rolling with it and it was good. It worked. Perley is a cattle driver who decides to help a woman named Emma, and her baby, along with an old man named Possum claim their life back. Beneath the baby faced figure that looks as innocent as can be, a gun slinger that’s faster than lightening.
A pretty good adventure western. The hero is incorruptible, almost always right, very capable in everything he does, never misses, and never gets hit with gunfire. Its not impossible someone like this could exist, but they'd be the most famous person in the old west, not an obscure cowboy on a ranch.
Perley Gates isn't your typical western hero. He is modest and don't like to show off. But he helps people when in need and he is fast with a sixgun, really fast. This is almost a cozy western, it's humorous and there is still action and gunplay. I really like this new series from #Kensington and thanks to #Netgalley I was able to enjoy my self for a couple of hours.
Any Western with the name Johnstone attached is going to be a great read. Guaranteed. Add in Perley Gates, one of the more original Johnstone heroes and it's going to be a very entertaining read too. This saga finds our hero on a cattle drive, minding his own business, when someone asks for help. That's Perley's cue to find trouble following him. As always, characters are genuine, set in a true to life back stories that will keep you reading and rooting for the good guys as they work their way through the many, many problems life throws their way. The Johnstone books are all interconnected, you'll find characters from one saga joining the cast in the other sagas. This really adds to the enjoyment you get from the books. Each book can be read as a stand alone, but why limit yourself? For a great Western adventure, pick up any of the Johnstone books. I have yet to read any of their Westerns that I did not consider a 5 star book.
An enjoyable, action packed Western in the classic mould of 'good versus evil'. In this novel even an initial evil act has positive results for both individuals and for the future of a small community. The central character is an easy misunderstood upright hero with a name that provokes derision. He soon proves that his sense is justice is backed up by an ability to defend the wronged. If you want an enjoyable read then this is the book for you.
Another in the Perley Gates series and it doesn't fail to be a fantastic read. Perley finds himself having to help a single lady with a baby and an old timer get away from trouble and the adventure and bonding that follows him is wonderful and the adventures following Perley are just wonderful.
Another fine mess Perley has found himself in. His brothers send him along to help out a widow, her baby and the old man she's traveling with and sure enough Perley ends up stepping right in it again! Lots of action and outlaws to make it an all night page turner.
Ever the peace-maker, Perley Gates has another adventure. Being an odd sort of guy, some people never seemed to take him serious but he kept trying to solve problems with talk and not his fast gun. I loved the inclusion of Emma and baby and the travels that took them to a new life. Thanks for excellent writing.
Book 3 of Perkey Gates… This is a series that is just Perley all the way! He gets in more “pies” than I could image. His life is endangered many times and mostly comes out on top. A widow and baby seem to be left with nothing. Lots of action in this offering from the authors!
Haven't read any of Johnstone's Perley Gates books so I wasn't as interested in this character as the Jensens are. But, perhaps if I read another one, I will start to become friends with Perley. This was more gritty than the Jensen Christmas series.
Since I read these out of order, it was cool meeting up with a future character. Perley is a great character that I'm enjoying. Looks like I only have 2 other books to read and that's a bummer. The series I enjoy always appear pretty short. Hope more come.
I've just read the first three books in a row. And thoroughly enjoyed them. There's no doubt in my mind that Perley IS James Stewart! It's like reading a wonderful old black and white movie.
I always enjoyed my western books but this series was always a little sillier than most. In saying that, I will continue with the next book of the series.
