Like everyone raised in the idyllic seaside town of The Burrow, the ocean played a large role in Rose Barros’ life. She lived her life to the rhythm of the tides until a near-death experience changed her love for the water to a soul-deep terror, driving a wedge between herself and her sister, Reen.
Now, the only thing threatening to drown Rose is a mountain of bills and the burden of caring for her mother. She needs her sister more than ever, but rebellious Reen has skipped town and shows no interest in returning.
But that all changes when two strangers arrive in the quiet seaside town and turn her life upside-down… The first, a girl who leaps from the pier before Rose’s eyes; the second, the handsome new Chief of Police who doesn’t take kindly to Rose interfering in his investigation of the girl’s disappearance.
As they dig into the girl’s past, secrets are revealed, including a connection to Rose herself. Can Rose face her deepest fears, or will the truth lead her into deeper waters than she can handle?

I received a copy of this from Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.
A sweet, engaging read - with a curious ending!
Well. There's an intriguing title... what sort of secrets were we talking here, I wondered? Romantic? Related to the family? Slightly supernatural? Turns out it's all three, to one extent or the other.
Rose Barros lives in a tight-knit community, where she's lived all her life. Although it's by the sea, she personally can't stand the water, after a traumatic incident that happened to her as a young girl. Her mother, Pearl, is in a care home (with dementia) and her sister, Reen, has moved as far away as possible.
Things get interesting when a new chief of police turns up (who happens to be a bit attractive, wink, wink, nudge, nudge). Rose also sees a young girl jump into the sea but her body is never found. She becomes obsessed with the girl, much to the police-chief's irritation. But who is the girl really, and what has she come for?
Romance isn't usually my thing; however, this book thankfully skipped the sentimentality and kept the relationship convincing and not too smushy. I appreciated the mysterious aspect of it, though at the end, I was left with a lot of questions - I'll have to read the next in the series!
One aspect that I thought was particularly strong was the depiction of the community itself; it was really heartwarming to read; and almost made me wish I lived in a place like that! I like that it was a nice place; so many book settings are hostile, unpleasant places, so it's pleasant to have a change.
I did have a few minor quibbles. For example, it says Rose is in her twenties, yet her mother is a dementia sufferer who is depicted as pretty old. (Grey hair, frail etc.). This may have been because she was ill with something, but if that was the case, that part totally went over my head. Otherwise, I'm presuming she must have had Rose late in life... but then Reen, the sister is even younger than Rose. Just a little thing, but it did niggle me slightly. I apologise if it's me that missed something early on in the book!
Also, I would have liked to get more of a sense of Reen. She was such an interesting character; I kept expecting her to show up and stir stuff up, and was slightly disappointed when she didn't. I'm presuming she'll be in the next one, maybe?
Overall, a really enjoyable, cosy read - many thanks for letting me review a copy.
This was one of my most different but wonderful reads. The book was a cacophony of different voices luring me on even when the book was from Rose's POV. There was a hidden song which was being played in the entire book; a lost melody of hidden secrets and past life.
The book was the beginning of a series, an appetizer for things to come. Rose led a normal life, working in her friend's restaurant, visiting her mother who had dementia in the nursing care, making googly eyes at the new cop Shane, and having a love-hate relationship with her sister Rene. Till a young girl with long black hair jumped off the pier, and Rose was the only witness...
My first book by Katlyn Duncan, it certainly won't be my last. Her words resonated deep within me where my imagination resided. A book which appeared to be a bundle of family secrets soon turned out to be something which pushed the realms of this known world. Katlyn's hints of possibilities in the story brought out a hidden nugget of magic in me.
And then came my teeny tiny niggle, the book wasn't a complete story and did end with a cliffhanger. So now I gotta wait for book 2, and I hate waiting. I want all the 3 books right now to immerse in the complete story.
This book was a siren's song which pulled me into the depths into the sea of the story, but being book 1, I just coursed its surface. An enjoyable read.
I'd last read the synopsis for this story in 2020, and I didn't bother rereading before starting the book. I just wanted to tackle my tbr, and I remembered it appealed to me.
Nevertheless, in just the prologue I'd guessed one of the "secrets", and when the girl leapt from the pier, I'd figured out the big reveal. Overall, it was just very predictable to me! But that in itself was fine.
The romance, tho? I wish we had less of that, since I wasn't convinced, nor could I care. I also didn't like the guy.
I was actually engaged before we started getting more Shane (new Chief of Police). Or should I say, too much Shane?
This is romantic paranormal with a little mystery. But not much happens, so when you've figured out the big reveal early on, and all that's carrying it is the hormones between the mc Rose and Mr. Shades, you grow bored and your eyes gloss over.
Also, it is narrated that Rose doesn't usually think about her sister, except she does nothing but think the same thoughts about her and the rest of the family.
And, as I see it, Rose likes to carry blame, even the most nonsensical types.
So, even though it's a short book, there is way too much telling not showing, and too much inner narration as opposed to action.
The reveal was right at the end, leaving more questions than answers, and we were left on a cliffhanger. So to answer the blurb's question, "Can Rose face her deepest fears, or will the truth lead her into deeper waters than she can handle?", we don't know because we aren't given time to see how Rose reacts after digesting the truth.
I also questioned why her mother was portrayed in such an aged state, when Rose is not even 30. Makes no sense, even if she has dementia.
I liked the writing, it was accessible, but not dull or dry.
The small town, and its tight community vibes, was also well accomplished.
The book is an average story, not great, not terrible, just a simple read to tide you over.
I won this book in a giveaway - thank you to the author again.
Rose is finding life quite tough with mounting bills and problems with her mother's care, so when sees a girl jump into the sea the last thing she needs is the recurring dream of her near death experience when she was younger leaving her with a fear of the sea. When no body of the girl turns up she is intrigued, which doesn't impress the new Chief of police....... but what is the connection between the girl and Rose?
A good story with lots of combining aspects and a clever ending that will make you want to read the next book
‘Rose’ is the first in the ‘Sisters’ Secrets’ trilogy of books by Katlyn Duncan. This was my first book by Duncan and it will not be the last, it has wet my appetite for the other books in this series and also her other novels. This was a well written, effortless read, with great characters and it had me hooked from the very first page until the cliff-hanger of an ending. This book introduces us to Rose, and the story is told from her point of view. Rose Barro’s lives in the quiet and idyllic seaside town, The Burrow. The coastal town we learn moves to the, “rhythm of the tides”. Unfortunately Rose has a, ‘soul-deep terror’, of water and the ocean in particular having nearly drowned as a teenager. Rose is a waitress in the town and is struggling with bills and with caring for her mother, Pearl who has Dementia. Her stress is added too by sister Reen, who has skipped town. Whilst walking on the pier, Rose witnesses a tragic event, an unknown girl, not known in the town jumps from the pier in front of her. New Chief of Police, Shane, who Rose finds equally handsome and irritating does not appreciate Rose interfering in his investigation into this missing girl, but Rose is unable to leave the investigating to the police. The narrative moves the story along quickly, and the more Rose digs the more secrets are discovered, including a link between the girl on the pier and Rose herself. This is a heart-warming and enjoyable read, with a very likable main character, Rose. It has a bit of mystery, a touch of the supernatural and a hint of magic. The cliff-hanger ending has made me stay on the edge of my seat waiting for book two.
Having read this author before I was intrigued by the synopsis of this book. Not only does she give us mystery, but she throws in mythology and a love story too.
Rose has a hard life between looking out for her mother and working. She doesn’t need any more stress, but that is exactly what she finds herself getting when she becomes embroiled in something she doesn’t understand. As she starts digging further, Rose discovers that she is more involved in the mystery than she first thought.
I loved the way the story flowed, the characters were all really well written, and I am in need of the next book as soon as possible!
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing a copy.
I really enjoyed the sisters secret which was very surprising, when I first started reading it I didn't think it was going to be a book I would enjoy and I was very surprised I really did enjoy it. The story is well written and from Rose's pov, I found it easy to follow and very intriguing that I kept want to know more so I kept flipping the pages. I can't believe the way it ended and can't believe I'm going to have to wait for the next book to continue but am really looking forward to it.
I received this book on netgalley for an honest review, my review is my thoughts. I want to thank the publisher HQ digital and Katlyn duncan for allowing me to read it.
When Rose witnesses a young girl throwing herself to the sea. She is desperate to find out who the girl is and did she survive. This sets off Roses reoccurring nightmare making Rose more determined to get closer. An OK read.
Rose's story is gentle but intriguing. There are hints at an incident in her past being more than it originally seemed but the main story is a lovely tale of small town life, a strange incident and a dishy policeman (and who doesn't like a dishy policeman!). However, it also tackles loss and coping with long term illnesses in a very empathetic manner. As the story unfolds the mystery deepens, as does the antagonistic relationship between Rose and the policeman and the last couple of chapters spring a bit of a left field surprise. Without wanting to write a massive spoiler I can only say that the ending of Rose's story makes you want to learn more and I will be seeking out the story as told by Reen (Rose's sister) to fulfill my curiosity!
Loved this book. Need to find and read all of the books in this series. The plot and the characters are wonderful. So may secrets are exposed and yet there are so many more that are waiting to be revealed. Is Rose going to be able to save her mother? Will she and her sister become inseparable? So many questions and they can only be answered by reading the next book. Cannot wait to do just that. Highly recommend this book to all lovers of books. This was my first book by Katlyn Ducan and it will not be my last. I have found a wonderful and talented writer to follow. I won a copy of this book in a newsletter contest, but will be purchasing a copy to give to a friend. Yes, it was that good.
Recap: Rose Barros works as a waitress, visits her mum Pearl who suffers with dementia and tries to avoid the ocean after nearly drowning as a teenager. The only problem is she lives in a coastal town and she just witnessed a young girl jump to her death. Or did she?
Review: Excellent world building, the place and the characters feel real. Rose isn't a strong willed main character but that works for the plot. She tends to have huge reactions to emotions and her love interest plotline runs parallel to trope and cliche but we don't mind because we're more interested in the mysterious girl. And secretly we all enjoy a love story!
First, be prepared: this book is a cliffhanger. And, lol, it starts with a real live cliffhanger, when Rose sees what appears to be a young girl jumping suicidally into the sea. Rose is terrified of the sea since she almost drowned as a child. Rose drifts through the book trying to find out what happened to the jumper, trying to take care of her mother with dementia, missing her disappeared sister, working in fear best friend’s diner, and falling for the new chief of police. It is a lovely story, and I cannot wait to find the next book. (I am not fond of cliffhangers.. it’s like chocolate, sweet and wonderful, but I want it all at once.)
I throughly enjoyed this quirky read. When I first saw the book I thought that this was going to be a lighthearted read. Which in many respects it is. But there are some real issues written about in this book. Very sensitively and beautifully. But it is a more serious book then what the front cover portrays. I loved this book. I thought that it was fabulous. It escaped reality enough, but at the same time kept things very real and true to life. That you didn’t feel like the book was ridiculous. I loved the characters in this book and the romantic storyline that runs alongside it. Fabulous
My thanks to HQ Digital for an ARC of this novel via NetGalley.
Recently I have been seeking out novels with themes of sea lore and so its cover, along with those for the following books in the series, drew me to request it.
I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t fluff but dealt with serious themes such as the effects of trauma, loss and estrangement. There are light moments and romance to balance the darker aspects, which made me appreciate it more.
I felt a great deal of empathy for Rose and look forward to reading the next in the series in January.
This story of Rose and her life in the small town she grew up in, takes a very unusual turn right at the end! Scared of water since she almost drowned, Rose tries to do her best by her rapidly declining mother and keep in touch with her estranged sister. A shocking incident she is forced to witness brings back nightmares related to the ocean and she determines to assist the new police chief Shane in finding out what happened. Would be interesting to read the next book that is about the sister who went away and see whether they bond again.
This is my first novel by this author and it found it well written and the characters believable and well developed. The author wrote with an understanding of small town life that gave an interesting perspective I enjoyed the pace of the novel and the way the story progressed. The story kept me guessing to the end and I certainly didn't see the ending coming. I am curious to read the other 2 novels in this set to get the full story
Thank you to TBC Reviewer group for my copy of this novel
When I got the notification for another of Katlyn's books, I was so excited. I really enjoyed her other novels and I was intrigued by the synopsis of The Sister's Secrets. While reading, I found myself engrossed in the beautiful town of The Burrow and the people in it. The book was a mix of mystery with some fantasy elements and I loved it. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
Thank you Katlyn Duncan and Netgalley for a copy of this title. When I first started reading this beautiful story I had no clue to what it was about. I hadn't even read the blurb. I am now glad I didn't. What an amazing little story. Loved it, loved it, loved it. And I will certainly be looking out for the next one. Thank you Katlyn, it certainy isn't what it looks like on the surface.
I received a copy of this book from TBC reviewer request- thank you I’ve never picked up a book by this author before so she was totally new to me. I’d decided to save it up read once I’d broken up from work before Christmas I’m so glad I did! It was such a lovely read, funny and quirky but touching at the same time. I’ll definitely be buying books from this author going forward!
I really enjoyed reading ‘the sister’s secret’. Having read the blurb, I knew this one is for me. I just love The Burrow. Totally could imagine living there myself. Seaside towns have something magical, I think. Rose’s story was well written and had so many levels, funny and emotional. It was gripping kept you going right to the end. I am now looking forward to her sister’s story, Reen.
Rose lives in a small town and has a fear of the sea but doesnt really understand what happened to her the night she nearly drowned. Her mother is in care with dementia and cannot answer her questions. Rose is estranged from her sister Treen.A new policeman comes to town and Rose slowly falls in love. But what is her big secret?
The first book in a series, I wonder what secrets will be revealed as the series progresses? This is an introduction to their story, which focuses on Rose. This was a nice gentle story that introduced the series nicely and made me want to read more.
I was given a copy of this book for an honest review. I struggled to get “into” this book. The story moved very slowly for me & I was left with many questions that I can only hope will be answered in the other two books of the series.
I loved it. An enjoyable read that kept me reading trying to figure out the secret. I am looking forward to the next book. I received this book free an I am voluntarily leaving this review.
Rose was almost drowned by something in the sea, something that called to her when she was young. Ever since then she likes to stay away from the ocean, even though she lives right next to it. :)
Rose's home is an idyllic village by the seaside. Her mother is slowly losing her memories and had to be put in a home, for her safety. She has a sister, but they don't keep much contact.
One day she sees girl jumping in the ocean. never coming up again. She just can't let it go. There is a new officer in town. And she would like to help with the investigation. Only for him, it isn't all that helpful. :) They but heads a lot.. and fall for each other. It's a very cute love story.
I like the paranormal aspect of it, it was very interesting, however, I'm not the biggest fan of the writing style, I had a hard time connecting to it.
I started with the third one in this series, Pearl, which is about the mother of Rose and Reen and works very well as a stand alone. Thus I already knew the family secret going into the first two, which might have changed the dynamic of the books slightly, but I actually thought this sequence of reading worked very well. I am not usually a romance reader, and neither am I generally a great fan of fairy tale settings, but Pearl hooked me in and I now wanted to find out what happened to her little girls. ‘Rose’ and ‘Reen’ did not disappoint - it was lovely to read more about The Burrows, and it’s inhabitants and the mermaid lore, and about what happened to Pearl and her family after her ‘happily ever after’. There were moments of sadness, and -let’s face it- Reen is a bit of a tricky one to like, but overall these are easy, entertaining, romantic, heart-warming books with just the right amount of magic and fantasy. I also absolutely love the cover art, which made me pick them up in the first place. Great series - highly recommended to anyone who wants a bit of light in all the darkness!
This is a sweet romance with a bit of paranormal mystery. The story is well written and the characters are believable and interesting. This ends on a cliffhanger and leaves me wanting the next immediately.
Update: after a second read through, I enjoyed the story even more. So glad I can now binge the next two.
