I bought this book to gain a better appreciation for what two married friends have dealt with daily for many years as they continue to confront this dreadful disease, and it delivered. Written by a primary care physician and one of her patients whose husband died from the disease, the book provides many practical ideas on how to cope with the long caretaking journey.

The M.D. also understands firsthand the effects of Alzheimer’s because her father had the disease. With thirty years of medical experience and as the primary author, she provides not only clinical research and medical realities but also many of the detailed, caretaking pointers. By learning the clinical side of the disease, I understood more readily the value of the tips. The added perspective of a layperson coauthor reinforces the practical nature of the book.

In light of my friends’ challenges, I found certain realities of the disease sobering if not painful to consider, but helpful for understanding and empathy. The book’s content also made me think about my own situation should my wife or I ever develop the disease.

I’m going to keep this book and hope that no other friends or family ever need it.
