Answering the frantic knocking on the church door, Sister Mary Nichols finds a disheveled, dirty young girl with a scared look on her face standing at the threshold dressed in tattered rags and barefooted. While the Catholic Church is a haven to all, there was something special about this waif that reached out to the young nun for aid. Little did Sister Mary realize that when she opened wide the door and beckoned the girl, who seemed no older than ten, to enter, the Sister was inviting in evil as well.
Still, any misgivings she may have experienced, there was an instant bond between the nun and the nameless newcomer that could not be explained, a bond that reached beyond the present into the far distant past, a bond that called Sister Mary to action as dead bodies began to pile up and bloody signals to appear. A bond that could lead to the death of the Catholic nun and the homeless girl she called….Rose.

After reading this author’s previous work of Afflicted, I found this book and quickly dove into this new world, and boy am I glad I did!

This is a story that is set in what I can only describe as a unique city that reminds me of late 1800's London with a bit of steampunk thrown in, a dash of magic on top of that, and they all make for an amazing tale!

We’ve got an ancient evil deity that is gaining power through a very creepy yet sophisticated aristocrat and recruiting children into a sadistic cult to help do its chaotic bidding.

However, Sister Mary Nicholas is also in this city and ready to help the young girl Rose who has become a prime target for this evil power. Sister Mary and Rose meet briefly at the beginning of this story and quickly form a bond that reaches a level of friendship that you know will last a lifetime. So when Rose goes missing, Sister Mary moves heaven and earth to find her missing young friend.

Sister Mary recruits several other young friends along the way who are eager to help find the missing girl Rose, as we learn that they too consider her a very dear friend. We follow these characters across the city and through several adventures. At the end of the story we get an amazing action filled climax and a very satisfying epilogue.

The story is very descriptive, the characters are well developed and you learn to really love them and you want them to succeed and be happy. From start to finish I could not put this book down, I was completely enthralled by this novel, and I loved it very much!
