Paul was born in Toledo, Ohio to Bob and Fae Tripp on November 12, 1950. Paul spent all of his growing years in Toledo until his college years when his parents moved to Southern California.
At Columbia Bible College from 1968-1972, (now Columbia International University) Paul majored in Bible and Christian Education. Although he had planned to be there for only two years and then to study journalism, Paul more and more felt like there was so much of the theology of Scripture that he did not understand, so he decided to go to seminary. Paul met Luella Jackson at College and they married in 1971. In 1971, Paul took his first pastoral position and has had a heart for the local church ever since. After college, Paul completed his Master of Divinity degree at the Reformed Episcopal Seminary (now known as Philadelphia Theological Seminary) in Philadelphia (1972-1975). It was during these days that Paul’s commitment to ministry solidified. After seminary, Paul was involved in planting a church in Scranton, Pennsylvania (1977-1987) where he also founded a Christian School. During the years in Scranton, Paul became involved in music, traveling with a band and writing worship songs. In Scranton, Paul became interested in biblical counseling and decided to enroll in the D.Min program in Biblical Counseling at Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia. Paul then became a faculty member of the Christian Counseling and Education Foundation (CCEF) and a lecturer in biblical counseling at Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia. Paul has also served as Visiting Professor at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.
In 2009, Paul joined the faculty of Redeemer Seminary (daughter school of Westminster) in Dallas, Texas as Professor of Pastoral Life and Care.[1]
Beginning in June, 2006, Paul became the President of Paul Tripp Ministries, a non-profit organization, whose mission statement is "Connecting the transforming power of Jesus Christ to everyday life." In addition to his current role as President of Paul Tripp Ministries, on January 1, 2007, Paul also became part of the pastoral staff at Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, PA where he preached every Sunday evening and lead the Ministry to Center City through March, 2011 when he resigned due to the expanding time commitments needed at Paul Tripp Ministries.
Paul, Luella, and their four children moved to Philadelphia in 1987 and have lived there ever since. Paul is a prolific author and has written twelve books on Christian living which are sold internationally. Luella manages a large commercial art gallery in the city and Paul is very dedicated to painting as an avocation.[2] Paul’s driving passion is to help people understand how the gospel of the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ really does speak with practical hope into all the things they will face in this broken world. Paul is a pastor with a pastor’s heart, a gifted speaker, his journey taking him all over the world, an author of numerous books on practical Christian living, and a man who is hopelessly in love with Luella.

I've been wrestling for awhile with how I would rate this book. I've opted for 3 stars because I found genuine spiritual profit in the ideas presented in each meditation, the Bible passages associated with each meditation, and the questions posed after each meditation. I would also be remiss if I did not mention the beautiful photography throughout the book. Nevertheless, this is a tepid 3-star rating. I could drop down to 2 stars with little guilt.

Per the publisher's description, this is a book of "meditations in the form of verse." That's a fairly clunky descriptor. (Why the reticence to call them poems? Is that indicative of something? I wish I knew for sure.) Unfortunately, there is no third category of writing called "meditation." There are only poetry and prose. Since these meditations have been formatted into verse, I have no choice but to evaluate them on the grounds of poetry. Sadly, as far as poetry goes, "Broken-Down House" (p. 182) is the only decent one in the lot. All the others are sorely lacking. Where is the imagery? Where is the ambiguity? Where is the striking word choice? Why do the line breaks often feel completely arbitrary?

Ultimately, this book is really just prose masquerading unnecessarily as poetry. Consider these lines from the beginning of "Wait" (p. 240):
I have come to
understand
that I am not the
author
of my own story.
My narrative
is being penned
by one
who is the definition
of all that is
wise,
loving,
pure,
true,
and good.
Take all the line breaks away, and you see it for what it really is: just a couple sentences of solid prose. Honestly, that's what I would've preferred. Perhaps I'm being too much of a poetry snob. But I am what I am. :)

Good content, bad form.

Paul Tripp has experienced great suffering and it is in this fertile soil that his thoughtful collection of meditations have taken root. For one year I savored each piece and this was often my first morning light. I had many favorites, reading those over and over, and occasionally sharing them with friends who I believed might be nourished.

I do love Paul Tripp. His Biblical counseling work and ministry to the hurting soul has had a vital impact on my life and the way I view relationships. We truly are Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands and we are made for one another. Paul Tripp, his writing and speaking has truly shaped my understanding of this reality.

The content of this book would absolutely receive a Five Golden Star review if I were not looking through a literary lens as well. This work is lacking many elements that would properly classify these pieces as true poetry. In truth, these meditations would be more correctly classified as prose. But this does not change the fact that they are soulfully medicinal and satisfying.

First sentence: I am not a poet; I am a pilgrim. I am not attracted to formal, overly romantic Christian verse, but I think that we do not train our eyes to see enough, our hearts to consider enough, and our emotions to celebrate enough the glories of the grace that is showered down on us in a thousand ways every day.

My Heart Cries Out is a new devotional book by Paul David Tripp. The devotions are poems. But don't let the poetry scare you away. This book is far from intimidating--it's refreshing, honest, genuine. I enjoyed most--if not all--the entries. Which is saying a lot considering the fact that it's poetry. I am not a big reader of devotional books. I like books with weight, substance, heart--not light, fluffy, feathery nonsense. This book has substance. But again, it's not intimidating. Truth resonates.

I loved, loved, loved some of these:
My heart cries out, but I am not afraid, discouraged, panicked, forgotten, alone, dismayed, or doubtful because in the din of a million voices from every place in every situation young and old crying day and night in weakness, in alienation, in fear, and in distress, you are not overwhelmed, you are not distracted, you are not disgusted, you are not discouraged, you are not exhausted. But you listen, you hear, you attend to my cry in tenderness of mercy, in patience of spirit, and with generosity of love you listen to my plea and you never turn away. But with power and wisdom and the tender heart of a Savior, you do this amazing thing—you answer. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. (1 Pet. 3:12)

You are the sun that shines in darkness. You are the water that quenches thirst. You are the balm that heals the wounded. You are the master that calms the storm. You are the rose of brightest beauty. You are the chosen, perfect lamb. You are the king of a greater kingdom. You are the captain of battles won. You are the lion of chosen Judah. You are the dove of peace that’s come. You are the shelter for the homeless. You are the father to helpless orphans. You are the chosen, suffering son. You are my God, my Savior, my hope, my life, my forgiveness, my wisdom, my strength, my righteousness, my peace, my Father, my brother, and my friend. Because you are, I am what I am.

You are not a distant Lord, or a detached Master, moving the pawns on the board in an impersonal act of winning. Your lordship does not separate me from you as a serf would be separated from a king. No, you accomplished your sovereign plan by invading my dark and messy world in the person of your Son, giving yourself in radical grace to people who saw no value in your nearness. You are Master, and you are Immanuel. You are Lord, and you are Father. You are King, and you are Friend. You are Sovereign and you are Shepherd. Your rule is not from afar. No, your rule brings you near. I have hope today, because you are not distant. And I celebrate the amazing rest and strength to be found in the reality that your sovereignty has brought you near.

I was not designed to be on my own, to author my own story, to compose my own rules, to live with me in the center. I was not designed to question your goodness, to bring you to the court of my judgment, to be bitter in my assessment of the things you do. for owning my heart’s desires, for teaching me that my life is you. I was not designed to look for life outside of you, to treasure the creation, to love people, places, and things, more than you. I was not designed to let my heart fill with envy, to be constantly accounting, to be jealous and untrusting instead of resting in you. I was not designed to rely on my wisdom, to trust my imagination, to rely on my thoughts, to ignore your revelation. I was not designed to follow the paths of my craving, to be enslaved to my desires, to be ruled by my passions, more than I am by you.

After reading a few other devotional books by Paul Tripp (New Morning Mercies: A Daily Gospel Devotional, Come, Let Us Adore Him: A Daily Advent Devotional, and A Shelter in the Time of Storm: Meditations on God and Trouble), I looked forward to reading his latest book of devotional readings. This book includes 120 meditations written in the form of poetry, accompanied by beautiful photography by Tim Kellner. For the book, Kellner traveled to ten countries and five continents. The photography selections are meant to reflect the content and themes contained within the poetry. After each meditation, there is a related Bible verse, questions and a Bible passage for further study and encouragement on the subject matter of the meditation.
The author tells us that the meditations are notes from his journey through the struggle of God’s amazing grace. They are his meditations on the intersection between God’s ever-present grace and his ever-present battle to live out of the resources of that grace while he walks his way through this sadly broken and dysfunctional world. He tells us that in each of our lives grace is both a glory and a struggle. These are his honest meditations on that struggle. They are his spontaneous responses to his journey through glory and struggle.
Below are ten of my favorite passages from the book, which my wife and I used for our daily devotional reading:
• It’s first about you— your righteousness, your wisdom, your power, your authority, your grace—and how you have unleashed all of them for my forgiveness, my rescue, my redemption. My life is no longer about me; it is first and foremost about you.
• Hard moments in your hands become hard moments of amazing grace.
• You turn hardship into rescue. You turn suffering into redemption.
• Out of trials you bring transformation. Out of weakness you grow strength. Out of death you birth life. Out of darkness you bring light.
• You are my God, my Savior, my hope, my life, my forgiveness, my wisdom, my strength, my righteousness, my peace, my Father, my brother, and my friend. Because you are, I am what I am.
• When I am in trouble, in boundless love you trouble me with your grace until I confess my trouble and run once again to you for mercy.
• All that I am, wherever I am, whatever the time, will be used in service of you. This is my calling; this is your will.
• Please restore the eyes of my heart. Graciously make the days that I have left to be days of beauty because my heart is filled with visions of you.
• It is only when I abandon my righteousness, that I will rest in your righteousness.
• Moved by your glory, propelled by your love, sent by your grace, driven to redeem, you came!

I have come to understand that if I fail to love your law, I will fail to esteem your grace.
If I fail to respect your judgment, I will fail to celebrate your mercy.
If I have come to acknowledge that if I fail to fear your anger, I will fail to seek your forgiveness.
If I fail to admit my idolatry, I will fail to cry out for your rescue.
I have come to grasp that it is only when I accept the worst news ever to be written, that I will then gladly hear the best news ever to be proclaimed.
It is only when I give up hope in me, that I will put my hope in you.
It is only when I abandon my righteousness, that I will rest in your righteousness.
So, I pray that you would grant me the race to see and accept the indictment of your law, so I will seek and celebrate your grace.

Mr. Tripp has a written a heart felt cry of what our broken hearts yearn for. It is honest and it prepares your heart to be broken so that will be fixed by the only one who can. The one who knows us more than we know ourselves. It takes the gospel and makes it beautiful among the pain of sin and our deceitful hearts. Each segment is short and draws us near to the heart of God. Mr. Tripp has also shared some pictures that gives us a reminder of God's glorious creation.

There is no other! A Worshipful way to be reminded of God and how we need him so.

This book contains one man's soul outpouring before God. It traces his personal devotional journey with the intention of enabling others to take and use these words for themselves. Though the topics vary a bit, they centre on having a right relationship with God, with the benefit of receiving his forgiveness, grace and love.

The section images are lovely, acting as an integral part of using this book as a daily devotional. They are helpful in aiding contemplation and meditation, which stem from the suggested bible verses and reflective questions at the end of each poem. These devotions are quite confessional in tone but they cover topics that are relatable.

However, I didn't find them particularly poetic at all, and they are quite repetitive as well. The poems look like split up prose masquerading as lines of poetry, but not very successfully to my mind. Although it might have been the author's intention to leave them open-ended to interpretation as poetry or prose prayers, in which case, he succeeded in that goal. And he claims to be more of a pilgrim than a poet.

With a few notable exceptions, I couldn't connect in the way I hoped with these heart-cry devotions/poems. Many of them left me disengaged even though I love poetry and it usually speaks to me. But that wasn't the case here, sad to say, because I couldn't relate well to the author's style. Thanks to NetGalley and Crossway Books for the ARC.

My Heart Cries Out is the most beautiful devotional book I've ever seen. With its combination of poetry, prose, photography, Bible verses, questions and calls for reflection and challenges to dig deeper into scripture, this collection of meditations from Paul David Tripp contains a wealth of spiritual goodness.

As I read through each page, I thought how I would like to use this as a daily devotional book. Each selection could be used throughout the day or over several days. The poetry is worthy of quiet meditation, as is the scripture. I would journal and reflect on each of those parts separately. On top of those opportunities for depth in study, I would take the recommended further Bible readings and meditate and journal on each of them, allowing for multiple devotional times for each selection.

I highly recommend this for anyone who wants to deepen their quiet time or learn to meditate on God's word.

This is a beautiful book. Tripp helps us to train our eyes to see God’s amazing grace in everyday life as well as situations that are discouraging and hard. Each poem has a verse, questions to think about and apply, and something to read if you want to look into the topic further. These poems are accessible and easy to understand. I found myself offering them up as a prayer. I feel they brought me to a deeper intimacy with God. It reminded me a lot of “The Valley of Vision.”

Tripp writes with openness and humility. He really understands human nature. I found myself saying, “Yes, that’s right.” He put things into words that I felt but couldn’t express. This is a book to read over and over again. I’d highly recommend it.

Thank you to Crossway for providing me with a free e-copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

I appreciated how honest and refreshing these poems were. As a long-time reader of Tripp’s works, I loved being able to see this new side to him. However, from a “poetic” perspective, while I loved theese, they weren’t quite as literarily well-done as something like Ben Palpant’s Sojourner Songs or John Blase’s Jubilee poems. So 4 stars for something lovely from a beloved author; one star off just from a literary joyment persoective.

This book was a gift from a friend and I loved every poem. I enjoyed it so much, I bought a copy got a friend so we could read together. The poetry is beautiful and the pictures so serene. If you’re looking for inspiration and ways to see God in all the natural beauty surrounding us, this book is for you. The questions after each poem will make you think and reflect on all that’s most important to you.

But it may require that I buy the hard copy of this one in order to realize the full impact of this little devotional book. One must go back and forth to Bible passages which can be difficult if you're not near to a place where both media (the Audible version and a Bible) are close at hand. But it has distinct relevance for a regular dive into the spirit.

This book is like a slow stroll in the park, take your time to enjoy and soak it up. I’ve read it in the morning alongside the Scripture provided and dwelt on the questions. The photography is beautiful, the writing creative and reminder you aren’t the only one who feels the way you do. Can’t recommend enough.

Diferente a todo lo que he leído antes de Paul David Tripp. Si te gustan las palabras, la intensidad y musicalidad que se puede lograr con ellas, te gustará. No creo que vaya a ser un libro fácil de traducir sin perder escencia.

I spent many mornings over the past few months concluding my time of Bible reading with one or two of these meditations. While this isn't technically poetry (Tripp admits as much), I still found his writing to be beautiful and soul-stirring.
