Good Not Great

More of the same from this series. It lends itself to cliched cheeper writing as it has gone on I think. I still enjoy it as a guilty pleasure book but I struggle in any way to consider it good writing. I recognise that there are issues in translation though and that can impact the quality of writing. The story remains solid and interesting though the dialogue often is laughably bad.

If not for creepy, depressed, borderline rapey Naofumi at the beginning, I'd have given this one 5 stars. It was one of the best of the series so far, and probably would have been THE best if the beginning wasn't so incredibly cringeworthy. This one has kind of everything I like in a story. A seemingly unbeatable villain, a character choosing to do what is right instead of taking his reward and going home, big players in the story dying, characters having huge changes of heart and switching from minor villain to strong ally, people banding together to pool all their strength and resources into defeating an enemy who is far more powerful than they are, characters realizing why they fight and why they go on living, epic duels. It's kind of got it all. If only the beginning hadn't been so full of cringe.

Loved it.

I’m really enjoying the darker tone the story has taken. Sure, there’s still humor but with the loss Naofumi (and the rest of the world) has endured, things aren’t as light as before. With the introduction of a dangerous new foe and the redemption of an old foe, Naofumi and his party have to overcome odds like never before.

The things we learn about the world at large and the choices the heroes get, well they were eye opening to say the least. With the stakes rising and allies weakening, I’m excited to see what comes next.

Excellent as always

Didn't give a 5 for one simple reason, the enemy was defeated a little too easily. But what do I know? I'm not an author, just a reader.

Thank you for blessing us with another volume Yusagi-sama!!

The action is more compressed than the bloated Spirit Turtle stuff and the enemy behind the waves starts showing its face. Amusing war arc all compressed into one volume!

The resolution felt a bit like a deus ex machine, however... :- p

The Saga Continues

Naofumi is maturing. We're starting to see more of each of the other characters as well. But this enemy is significantly worse than anyone else he has encountered so far.

The title of this light novel is called The Rising of the Shield Hero. For some reason unknown, its author Aneko Yusagi has turned this volume 16 into a flaming turd (piece of shit on fire!). He introduces a new antagonist, responsible for the deaths of the battle against the Phoenix, called the whip hero.
Yusagi presents rules in the beginning of his story: A hero cannot get rid of his weapon, a hero cannot change his weapon, nor can he use more than one holy weapon or that weapon at one time. The author destroys the rules he has set for his main characters to benefit the antagonist whip hero, kills off the Melomarc Queen Mireille and removes the Hero-Shield weapon from the main character Naofumi. As he no longer has the Shield armor weapon, then he's no longer a hero, nor is he rising, nor does he have a purpose anymore. It is logical to imply that this story is finished, dead on arrival, the fat lady has sung.
Breaking premises, not following the story arcs, not completing the main story plots and filling pages with reckless, stupid, illogical and senseless content destroys any nuance of goodness or merit in this light novel.
The anime has two seasons, and is one of my favorite animes. The third season will be launched on 2021. I just hope that none of the fiascos of the light novel destroy the anime version. The Turtle battle, the phoenix battle or this Faubrey debacle. It's as if Yusagi has lost all creativity and passion for this story and just wishes to destroy it. It has been a bad experience for me to read this light novel. An author who promotes the destruction of his main characters and favors evil and his antagonists, deserves to have all of his written works burned up in flames.
