'Boss' is the fifth book in Maggie Carpenter's "Taking Charge" series. I normally give a brief synopsis of any book I review and then give my opinion on what I've read. What I've come to find out after reading several of Ms. Carpenter's books is she is a very talented author. Her characters, in this case, would be Tony and Colleen as the Hero and heroine, are personable and perfectly flawed to be relatable. Even her sub-characters, in this case, we find Jack, as Tony's best friend and employee, Scott and Jennifer, aka Chelsea, as the villains in the storyline, are presented in such a way to be someone you might know. The storyline is gripping with the mystery and hint of evil and totally engaging with the chemistry of a domestic discipline relationship. Truthfully, this series has given me a better look at the scope of Ms. Carpenter's talent with other storylines than dominant cowboys and I'm impressed. I'm happy to recommend this book.

THINGS AREN’T ALWAYS WHAT THEY SEEM, BUT MIRACLES DO HAPPEN

As with all the Taking Charge books in this series, they are each stand-alone stories and can take the reader on a different journey each time. Where it is a historical or contemporary western, a contemporary spy or even a paranormal with witches and warlocks in a battle of light and dark, Ms. Maggie Carpenter will take her readers on an emotional and fascinating ride between the pages of a book.

Tony McIntyre is the entire package. Good looks, charming personality, savvy business sense, ruthless player, and mega-rich. He has a way of helping business in trouble turn around, and it is as if he has the Midas touch, turning everything into gold. He isn’t in a serious relationship, and he has a policy of refusing to mix pleasure with employees.

Colleen O’Connell has a cosmetic company, Kiss Me Cosmetics, that is up and coming and doing well, but hit an uneventful snag. She will approach Allin Holdings for assistance in helping her get her company out of jeopardy. She isn’t a pushover and has enough business sense, along with a law degree to know she needs a Hail Mary for her business and that Tony McIntyre is the answer.

The plot will have Colleen personally contacting Allin Holdings to aid her business. While she knew about Tony’s business savvy, saw pictures of him, she wasn't quite prepared for the chemistry she would feel when meeting him face to face. He will shock his own team members when part way into the meeting, he asked them to leave, and it becomes a one-on-one meeting. Is he going to help and at what terms?

“Tragedy into triumph? Learn from a master. That’s something I’ve always wanted to do.”

What happens when Colleen wants to pursue an interest with him outside of work and her turns her down? She is hurt, he is upset, and the night goes from pleasant to two people being extremely upset. While they don’t work directly together, he has maintained a no-employee relationship policy, and she calls him out on it.

“Maybe you’re not stupid after all. Maybe it’s just the cowardly thing.”

“Did I give her mixed signals? Is she right? Can I have it all? Maybe I can.”

The story will take on a new twist when Tony visits a mall with a 1940s style bar and meets a charismatic bartender, Scott, and his girlfriend, Jennifer, who is touted as a psychic. Is there something for him to question regarding Colleen? What happens after a dinner out with Jennifer?

“You know what’s funny about that? Now that I’ve jumped off the cliff, I realize it was far more difficult standing at the edge. I don’t know why I was so worried. If something’s right, it’s right, and this feels about as right as it gets.”

As Tony and Colleen enter a physical relationship, strange things start happening. Is Tony the target, or could it be Colleen? Will Colleen listen to Tony’s ideas to help move Kiss Me Cosmetics into a lucrative position? Maybe taking a chance on Colleen both in and outside of business was a smart move for both of them. Together, they desires mirror the others.

“Thank you for breaking me out of my rut. You breathed fresh air into my life.”

The story will take on mystery, suspense, crime, danger, secrets, and lies, in this page-turning tale where looks can be deceiving, acts can fool, and lives are at stake. There is also romance, DD, and explicit sex scenes.

A FABULOUS READ !!!!!!!!!!

Antony is the sexy, take charge type of man that most women want, but can't have. (We create our fantasies based on men like Antony that can last a lifetime.) He spends his time working, not looking for love or a relationship. His forte is taking struggling businesses and turning them into profitable, successful companies, and he's very good at it. Colleen is a smart, beautiful businesswoman who is in need of help from Antony's expertise, but she isn't about to just hand her company over to Antony. It's a bumpy, curvy, dangerous road on which they are about to travel, but travel they do, and you'll be glad you went along for the ride. There is steam, sex, passion, danger, suspense, romance and quite a bit of naughtiness and discipline along the way. I loved every paragraph of this book and this series. I just hope there is another book to follow this one. A wonderful adventure!!!!!!

Can you say manipulation?

Although I found this story to be engaging, I also felt a bit, hmm . . . To pay homage to the general theme of this story, manipulated. I am a fan of the work place romance, hence my initial interest in this story. But I found the title misleading. She had power and demands of her own, though her wealth was on shaky ground. She never truly worked "for" him. At best I would say she worked "with" him. That being said, the suspenseful aspects of the story made this an acceptable read for me. Manipulation was happening all over the place, by several different characters, for several different reasons. An interesting dichotomy.

Intriguing, but slightly inaccurate. Tony was not Colleen's boss. They worked together more than she worked "for" him.

The information about this book was in the description, but it was really different than what I expected.

I think the suspenseful backstory stood out more than the romance. The bartender, the tarot card reader, the psycopath, etc. never really to a back seat to Tony and Colleen. One of the last scenes was definitely a hold your breath moment.

The book had romance, some spanking scenes, and some steamy scenes that all resulted in a HEA for Tony and Colleen.

I wonder if Frank and Chelsea will get a book of their own?

Two people , Tony McIntyre and Colleen O’Connell, who are driven in their work, meet during a work consultation and feel an instant attraction. However, Tony doesn’t believe in mixing work and pleasure, as he likes to be the boss in all ways. Colleen has other ideas! Both have strong personalities which lead to interesting interaction. An entertaining story that will keep you reading until the end. There are a few surprises along the way.

I received an Advanced Copy of this book.
Talk about smexy and hot, this book makes you melt while reading it. There are so many different twists to this that it keeps your interest always at the front and you can't wait to find out what happens next. I didn't want to put it down or for it to end. You have to love a man who can be spontaneous and willing to open his mind. Definitely worth reading...twice.

Colleen needs financial help with her business so she asks Tony. Tony is every woman's fantasy and after Colleen meets him she is determined that he will be hers. The problem is he doesn't mix business with pleasure. Their chemistry draws them together but, will mistrust pull them apart? This story has it all mystery, suspense, danger and steamy hot chemistry that will keep you glued to the pages. I would definitely recommend this book.

It's fun and exciting and the sex scenes are off the page sizzling. Fantastic story, strong characters, wonderful humorous scenes throughout the book, a good pace. Tony is know as a high power negotiator and investor in the business world. Colleen owned a small cosmetics that was facing bankruptcy. When these two come together sparks fly, intrigue begins and negotiations happen. A well written fun story.

Fun and sexy

This is a fun, sexy, romantic read. Meet Tony, he’s a fixer, think bailout. Meet Colleen, her company needs fixing. Instant sparks, no mixing business with pleasure. What?? Their story has some intrigue, a little touch of gut feelings and a whole lot of love. I would definitely recommend.

Fast paced story

Maggie Carpenter did a great job with the plot of this multi-layered story. The twists and turns came as quickly as I turned the pages. I found Colleen and Tony's relationship a little quirky but definately fun.

It was ok. I guess I was hoping for a more office romance then a mystery to throw a curve ball into things. I did like the chemistry between Tony and Collen but it seemed like they were being pushed back. That part was what kept throwing me off in the story.

I really loved this book, besides the suspense there is some BDSM and there is a decent amount of smut along with the spanking.

This is book five of the Taking Charge: Blazing Romance Suspense series and the main characters are Colleen O’Connell, who owns the cosmetic company Kiss Me Cosmetics which is in trouble, and turns to Tony McIntyre, billionaire and owner and CEO of Allin Holdings, for assistance. She had looked him up after a new skincare cream her company promoted didn’t quite have the results they first thought and her company was badly represented in the press afterwards. She is hoping his company can help her overcome this and get back into profit. He is even sexier in person than in the magazine article she saw about him. He has arranged for his lawyer David, his CFO Sam, and Frank his executive consultant, and him to meet with her, but she has come alone, which he finds unusual and makes him admire her even more. Tony looks to get input from his trusted employees after the meeting and most give her the thumbs up, with Frank in particular liking her immediately. His title of executive consultant covers a wide variety of tasks and he has a poker face, but can read others faces easily. Tony changes up the meeting and takes her across to a café for pie and a drink. He clearly likes her and would love to go out with her, but he never mixes business with pleasure. They agree a mutual advantageous deal and he takes her out for dinner to celebrate, where she would love him to take her home or go back to hers, which ends on a bad note and an argument!

He doesn’t feel like going home, so goes to a bar nearby and starts talking to the barman, Scott, who tells him he should go and see the psychic, Jennifer, who reads tarot cards in a back room. Not something he would normally do, but he is feeling rather mellow and saw a happy couple coming out of the room raving about what this woman knew! When he sees Jennifer, he feels instantly attracted to her, which is a bit weird after how attracted he was to Colleen. It somehow feels a bit different and Jennifer quickly gets him taking about himself and his plans, even touching him and wanting him to take her home with him. Luckily he has an early meeting the next day and refuses her insistent demands, but does ask her out for dinner another day. He suffers a massive headache and sleeps in, which is unlike him. Colleen gives him an apology for pressing him to break his rules on relationships and hugs him, which leaves him feeling more for her again. He feels like Colleen is real, but can’t figure out why he felt so deeply connected to Jennifer, when he didn’t know her at all. It certainly left him feeling a bit weird, but Frank of course figures it all out!

His talk of spanking her has still got her all worked up and she tells a white lie to get to stay at his home for a few days, leaving her open to the psychopath who is after marks for their wealth and forces females to act as his girlfriend and sidekick. He is a dangerous foe and will kill to clear up any loose ends if he feels his identity might be in danger. Colleen and Tony manage to get hot and steamy in his home, so her plans clearly worked, and she gets introduced to his darker desires which she finds ramp up her feelings of contentment and even love with him. Danger is coming for them both, but Frank will have some part to play in helping a younger woman in trouble, who is connected to everything that happens. A change in plans means Tony can’t get enough of Colleen and just think, he almost chose Jennifer! It goes from a steamy romance with two high powered business people, to dangers from a psychopath and serial killer. Great twists and shocks at the end. Another fun read with plenty of steam and strong characters. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

This is a lovely spanking romance featuring two very dynamic business leaders, one in need of a cash infusion to save her business and another who has great business sense coupled with a strong belief in keeping business and pleasure completely separate. When Colleen and Tony take a personal interest in each other they are both surprised and concerned. Things seem to start well for them but then takes a very negative turn. Tony’s concern grows even greater when he has an unexpected meeting with a psychic and the plot takes a HUGE turn. This story will really keep you on your toes and turning the pages. What you get is an absolutely great story filled with angst and intrigue, constantly building to a great finish. The spankings and sex are scintillating, and the kink level is low. 4 Stars.

The book started off really well with Colleen negotiating a business deal with Tony, who is supposed to be this corporate shark. He is portrayed as a self made billionaire that makes men quake and doesn't put up with BS. However, he is taken in by a con artist and bad one at that. It was such an unexpected twist of events and to his character that I thought I missed something in the story. Colleen is also supposed to be a top of her class lawyer turned business owner. Later in the book, she is making bad decisions just to close the deal. It felt like the author couldn't decide on how the characters should be. It was a decent story, but lacked consistency.
