Keira Blackwater is human. She owns a classic car shop, hangs out with her two best friends, and goes clubbing on Friday nights. Her life is pretty typical for a twenty-two year old living in a world where supernaturals live out in the open.
Except for one little thing...her blood. It alone has the ability to cure the virus that created supernaturals hundreds of years ago after the Great plague, and make them human again. She's accepted what it can do, and aside from her phobia of sharp, pointy needles, doesn't think about it too often. But then her blood goes missing from the local hospital, supernaturals start turning up dead with a strange anomaly in their system, and Keira is blamed. Vampires and werewolves suddenly hunt her at every turn, and not because they want the cure.
As Keira fights to prove her innocence and track down whoever is responsible, she must come to terms with the staggering truth about her birthright, all while trying to protect the people she loves the most. Will she be able to prove her innocence before time runs out? Or will she lose everything she's worked so hard for...maybe even her life.
K. R. Willis grew up in the South reading everything she could get her hands on. That love stayed with her, and now helps feed her writing. She lives in Oklahoma with her husband, animals, and lots of books. If you ever wanted to find her, an old bookstore or antique store, wouldn't be a bad idea.
I was in the mood for a supernatural story, and was lucky to get this for free. From the cover, I wasn't worried about a sci fi bodice ripper, and my expectations were met and exceeded. There's plenty of substance to this story, and it's clean, if you discount a grope in the midst of a fight. Speaking of that, it is violent, but imo not above what I'd expect, and only slightly into the sickening arena. I found the action to be very suspenseful and not predictable. I normally don't like vampires in my stories, but in this one I felt they weren't primary, and the focus was on the main character. There were some implausibility issues, like Keira being a 22 year old classic car mechanic who never actually in the story works on a single car. But, overall, I enjoyed it and plan to read the next in the series.
I found this series starter to be interesting. I loved the concept of the blood cure and the story line around it. I loved the characters, especially Leo and Kya (a puma). Kiera was just the type of heroine that I enjoy reading about. She kicks butt but isn't too tough at the same time. I will definitely be checking out the rest of this series. I am curious where it will lead.
I finished this book a week ago but put off reviewing it because I wanted my thoughts to be unbiased. K.R. Willis is a local author and I bought Blood Cure in support of her. However, I did not want the reasoning behind my purchase to influence my review. I was worried that if I came out right and said, ‘I loved it!’ it wouldn’t be authentic. But you know what, I did love it. It was fun, fast paced, all wrapped around the world that coexists with the supernatural one. I read it fast and wished for more when it was over, as any good book should entice. There were a few aspects of the book I found problems with but I’ll get to those. Keira Blackwater’s world revolves around the mechanic shop she owns, her two best friends, a nonexistent dating life, and oh, yeah, donating her mystical blood that has the only power to cure supernaturals. When a couple of werewolves show up dead, Keira finds herself the focus of revenge from their pack. Invoking the help of a vampire, Leo, and her friends they set off on a journey to reveal the truth behinds Keira’s blood, her puma tattoo that magically comes to life, and the past that her family has so strongly tried to hide. Sounds good, right. Well, it is. The negative of this story is that it is entirely plot-driven. There is hardly breathing room and character development between action scenes. At first, this was disconcerting, but as the story led on I found myself almost skimming to the next piece of the action. This is a series, and I feel that K.R. built up an incredible journey for Keira and her readers. If the next book is slower paced and she expands on her characters, I can see this easily being a series I’ll read time and again.
A Brilliantly Imagined Paranormal Universe! This is my first foray into the paranormal genre, and BOY am I glad I took the plunge! Willis has an extremely vivid imagination and a talent for building suspense and creating an intriguing universe.
Keira Blackwater lives in a world where vampires and werewolves have been normalized into society since the government established rights for paranormals in the 1970s. In practice, these rights are fragile truces at best, a somewhat extreme allegory of modern society.
Keira is unique in that her blood can be used to “cure” paranormals back into human form. A small industry has developed around the collection and distribution of her blood.
When paranormals begin to turn up dead, all evidence points to Keira. Now, she finds herself the focal point of a conflict between vampires, werewolves, and an ancient demon of pure evil. Keira must find a way to both combat her enemies and prove her innocence.
Willis is such a descriptive author that I could feel every bruise, cut and emotional trauma that Keira experienced.
I highly recommend Blood Cure to any reader who enjoys a well told, extremely imaginative story with lots of very realistic combat scenes, and a highly satisfying ending. I can’t wait for the next installment in this well-established series.
One continual wild ride that leaves the reader wanting more. From birth, Keira Blackwater was selected for a specific purpose. She spends her 20 some years thinking that purpose is solely because her blood cures the virus that turns humans to supernatural beings. Although virtually unknown in the human world, except for her ability to restore classic cars, Keira is famous in the paranormal community. Most of the time, that alone is her saving grace. She intermingles with supernatural and human beings without fear, that all changes when members of the paranormal community begin dying. Witches, vampires, and werewolves alike put a bounty on her head because the marker distinguishing her blood is found in all the victims. When the entire super natural community comes after her, nowhere is safe. Ms. Willis novel takes one on a wild ride leaving the reader wanting more. Get comfortable and hold on.
Decent idea, good potential, execution lacking. Keira is supposed to be 22 but acts much younger most of the time. (She squeals for joy when she gets a glass of orange juice….) In fact a lot of the reactions and emotions feel oddly exaggerated or juvenile, such as when Keira and her father burst out laughing and laugh on for minutes after she gets sprayed with water from her puma. Who actually does this?
The conversations between Keira and her recently animated tattoo are similarly silly, as is the spirit animal/ guard puma’s completely inability to warn Keira in any way until it’s too late.
Probably the biggest issue for me was how clumsy the use of Keira being First Nation was. Unlike Patricia Brigg’s Mercy Thompson (who is also a mechanic, which I’m sure is completely coincidental...), Willis doesn’t manage to ever make it feel convincing or natural-or as anything other than a plot device.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I'm giving this 4 stars, but it is probably a 3.5. Its good, but obviously the first book of a series. I like it, but it wasn't perfect. It has a bunch of a Mercy Thompson feel to it at the beginning, i.e. Keira Blackwater is native American and a car mechanic. But then it diverged.
Keira's blood cure supernaturals. If someone who is attacked by a vampire or werewolf gets her blood, they return to human. So she donates blood for emergencies to the hospital her friend Sally works at. When her blood goes missing she donates more, but figures out it is being used to kill supernaturals. Unfortunately, the supernatural community thinks she is doing it on purpose.
Keira also has a spirit animal tattooed into her skin that is able to come out and help her heal or fight. Rya is a puma and pretty great.
The relationships are good in this and the writing is fine. The first books in a series are rarely perfect. I want to read the next one to see if it gets better.
Unusual premise with an intriguing integration of Native American tales. The idea of a Blackfoot woman, a mechanic in her twenties, with blood that cures supernaturals of the virus that changed them turns standard urban fantasy on its head.
She regularly donates blood at a local hospital so that quietly a cure can be offered to those changed unwillingly. And then there is a theft from the hospital. Suddenly a rash of supernatural murders occur, all with one thing in common... a single blood marker that traces back to her blood.
She becomes a target... the wolves and vampires have found her guilty... she has one chance to appeal her sentence. She has 3 days to prove her innocence and find the culprit.
Challenging, modern and mythic this volume is well worth reading. I'm hoping there are other volumes set in this universe to follow.
At first I thought reading this- Man this is Briggs fan fic. Native American young adult female car mechanic battling her way through a world full of supernaturals. Not original once you have read some Mercy Thompson. I got some Laurel K vibes in some of the characters too as I read (Leo to be specific.) The more I read the more I enjoyed it and realized I did not care it read familiar. I enjoyed those other authors and the things I enjoyed about their works I was reading in a new way. I like the Spirit Warriors and the bond between Kiera, Sally, and Sam. I liked the simple beginnings to a possible romance with Leo. I like the fact that Kiera’s blood being the cure for supernaturalism is a unique aspect of the book. I will probably read more in the future to see what happens next.
I bought this book for a couple of reasons: 1, as an English teacher, I try to read new YA novels that I think might pique my students' interest; 2, the author is local. The novel started a little bit slow for me, but once the main character, Keira, gets to the night club a few chapters into the story, the plot really took off for me. There were a couple of elements I had figured out before the end of the book, but that didn't really take away from the story at all. I found it fairly typical of a Paranormal YA novel, but interesting and unique enough to be worth the read and the recommendation. Besides, I'm totally crushing on Leo, so I cannot wait for the next book to come out.
Much of the storyline reminds me of the Mercy Thompson books by Patricia Briggs. So much so, I almost put it down very early on. Fortunately, there was enough of a difference that I kept on reading. It had a good pace and the story was interesting but I wish there had been more character development and less similarity to Mercy Thompson. The characters in this book just show up without enough of a backstory.
I will say that this book didn't have the typical proof reading errors that I normally see on many of the e-books.
Keira's blood can cure supernatural people but it ends her up in a lot of trouble
Keira is a human with unique blood that can cure supernatural people and turn them back human. She donates blood every month but she finds out her blood has gone missing. Sally her best friend works at the hospital and has no idea who took it. When 2 werewolf and up dead and they find out her blood was used it sets into motion a hunt for Keira. She has no idea why anyone would set her up but she must find out who that person is and try to stay alive long enough the prove her innocence.
I am not a werewolf vampire or witches kind of book fan. They just are not my type of read. I meet the author through my husband and after she had written Her second book decided to read Blood Cure. Wow what a book not at all what I thought it would be. The author has a way of describing things with elegance that just makes you feel your there. I would recommend this book to any one who enjoys a good book.
I downloaded Blood Cure as a free ebook from Amazon. Another book with a fresh idea which falls short of its potential. Littered with plot holes and continuity issues, the story has too many starts and stops (I had to frequently go back due to continuity issues to see if I'd missed something. e.g. Rya unable to manifest, suddenly, with no explanation, she's in the story again). With a few tweaks, this could easily be a 5-star read, but as it's written--not so much.
A first read from author and I am glad I read this book. It was right up their with my best authors in this category. Kept me spellbound and unable to put it down. I definitely will Get book two. A young girl who thought she was a normal human being and to do d out she was special and would have to take on the entire supernatural community. You must read this.
I can’t begin to say how very much I enjoyed this series. There was lots of action to where you didn’t know for sure where things were going. I really loved Keira and Leo and can’t wait to see just where this relationship is going. I will be eagerly anticipating the next book in this series to see how Sam is going to get along with his spirit guide. I highly recommend this series.
I am not sure how I feel about this book. The characters are interesting but the story lagged in spots. I didn’t care for the swearing and some of the reactions didn’t feel logical. She is given three days to prove her innocence so she goes home and sleeps then goes to work the next day... really?
This was a very exciting story filled with lots and lots of action. I never knew where the plot was heading and was continually surprised by new developments. I became very fond of Leo and was delighted that the author gave Keira and Leo a possible future together. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Great action packed tale.!!!
Wow, This story really held my interest and kept me reading. Lots of supernatural creatures and plenty of action. I look forward to reading the next in the series.
Keira was getting the life beat out of her every time she turned around. Her blood was supposed to be used to help supernatural but someone is making it kill them.Read this book, you won't believe what goes on .It was great,I can't wait to read the next book.
I enjoyed this book. I learned about it through my cousin Kristen, who edited it. I enjoyed the supernatural elements and the characters. The storyline was engaging and is open for following books of the series. Will recommend to my readers.
This was a pretty good book. I rally like Leo and how he has continually helped Kiara without ever asking for anything in return. That being said, there were several times where it felt like I was reading Twilight.
I don't read a lot but I couldn't put this book down. it kept my attention from the beginning until the end. highly recommend it to everyone who like adventure with alittle mystery.
I really enjoyed the storyline behind this book and hope to read more about these characters soon. I feel there is even a good prequel for this could be series
I love this & I can't wait for more. I will be also leaving a review on Goodreads @ Amazon. And letting everyone know about it. So i gave it a 5 Stars.
Kiera Blackwater and the other characters found in this book are well developed. It had me hooked within the first few pages. It could be easily read in one sitting, But I did not want to rush through it, so I took my time. There are twists and turns throughout the book, and the ending left me surprised. This book is filled with non glittery vampires, werewolves, and one tough cookie of a woman. What else could a guy ask for? This was a great first novel from an up and coming author. Looking forward to seeing more books from her.
