Loved this book!!!!!!!!!! I cannot say enough wonderful things about it.
First of all, love the heroine. She's strong, courageous, doesn't let people walk all over her (except her sister, kinda), and stands up for her rights in a male-dominated profession. She's been passed over for a much-deserved promotion.
"If you at least partied, then being a woman in a good ole boy company wouldn't be such a major strike against you."
She lost the job for being "too professional".
She doesn't cry. She doesn't bow her head and just complete her assignment in Paris. She fights back. She quits, makes demands, and leaves the company to realize how badly they need her. She becomes a silent advocate for women fighting for equality in the workplace everywhere. She has a FB page. This is just so much fun and incredible! I love that this story addressed such a major issue. This isn't one of those stories in which a woman just sits around waiting for a man to rescue her and make her life worth living. Pfffht.
When her longtime boyfriend proposes, she says, "I've wasted three years on you. Sure as hell not wasting a great bottle of wine."
While all that's going on, secrets are being revealed in Paris. Her sister's lifestyle--there's more going on than meets the eye. Her long lost father...is...I'm not saying anything. A mystery develops and Samantha ends up running all over Paris looking for her sister and trying to find out who fathered her niece. There's a passionate affair with a sexy puppeteer, former chef...that may come to a screeching halt when yet another secret is revealed.
This book has it ALL: mystery, mayhem, drama, secrets, sex, love, passion, finding oneself, travel, and a strong woman at the helm.
I cannot wait for the author's next one. I'm frothing here.
I rarely get as involved with a book as I did this one. That's not to say I don't enjoy the books I read, but I don't find myself thinking about the characters when I go about my daily life like I did with Kissing My Old Life Au Revoir.
I expected to laugh, and I did. I expected to experience falling in love, and I did.
But I didn't expect to cry at the end, and I did.
Ms. Watson handles an estrangement between a father and daughter just right -- no easy ending, no sappy forgiveness scene. Instead, she weaves this angle of the story very realistically, as she does all of the other emotional pieces. Her characters stay true to their personalities from beginning to end, even as they mature from new experiences.
I enjoyed the pace of this book--- quickening towards the end. I felt like Samantha evolved into a likeable person and the situations, although dramatic, are something that could really happen. Too bad their isn't a sequel. I would love to know how it ended up.
Samantha works hard at her job. She puts in more hours than most people do and does all the work behind the scenes that make up the little things most people don't think of. When in Paris for work instead of getting the promotion she was expecting she finds she has been passed up for another person. While in Paris she also tries to talk her sister into coming back home with her. Her sister has many secrets she has kept hidden from her family. She ups and leaves Samantha with a mess and few clues on how to find her and how to unravel the mess she left behind. Luc her sister's neighbor helps her look and figure out what to do next. He has a few secrets of his own that may hurt Samantha as she grows closer to him.
Samantha gets her whole life changed in a few days and takes it pretty well. When others would fall apart she tries to hold it together with a few breakdowns. I really enjoyed reading about her as she is a smart woman, who sometimes takes on more than she should. She had to grow up young to help with her sister. Luc is sexy Frenchman who a person can't help be drawn to. He has a few ghost of his own he needs to take care of and he has to figure out what he wants to do from now on. He doesn't like to be a puppet for anyone that is for sure. Libby Samantha' s sister is kind of flakey at times and has many secrets. A few times I wanted to smack her and say quit being stupid.
I loved this book and enjoyed following Samantha on her journey of discovering just what she really wants, how she goes about getting it and discovering many secrets. There is a mystery you get to follow along with that has to do with changing a few peoples lives. You get transported to Paris as the author does a great job describing the places, people and so much more. Like the food my mouth watered just reading about some of the food. This book has a few twist coming I didn't see coming and I enjoyed that. You also can get a few chuckles one in particular about a dog's name. I love how Samantha has friends try and help her out using a means most use everyday. I could keep going on about this book but I will just say it was a pleasure to read and I look forward to reading more books from this author.
When Samantha heads to Paris to do her job as an event planner, she never dreams how her whole world will change. She gets there and visits her sister Libby, who is SURPRISE 8 months pregnant, and no daddy to the baby in sight. Luc, the friendly neighbor, is very helpful when she searches for her sister after she disappears. Samantha feels her life spiraling out of control and not only wants to get control again, but needs to reevaluate her goals.
This is a story that pulls you right in. I found myself thinking about the book and the characters when I put it down and when I went to bed at night. The need to have to keep reading was more than I had felt in a long time. I wanted to know what was happening to Libby and her baby, was Samantha finding happiness, and of course I needed to know what Luc was up to.
Eliza Watson wrote Kissing My Old Life Au Revior with just the right amount of emotions. I laughed, I cried, and I sighed (a lot). The relationship between Libby and Samantha made me laugh, not cause it was funny, but I could relate so much. This is the relationship that I had with my sister. The growing up and fighting so much as youngsters but then as we grew older I took on that older sister role and made sure she was protected just as Samantha did for Libby. I cried for the relationship between the girls and their parents. Having neither parent there for the support and the guidance every child needs growing up was hard for me to imagine, as I have both my parents still around, but I felt for them. The sighing…well the relationship between Luc and Samantha just made me sigh. There were other times that I felt these feelings but I do not want to give away too much of the story.
Eliza Watson has earned a spot on my To Read Authors list. I will highly recommend this novel to anyone looking for a light, fun, and easy read. I found it perfect for the beach or the pool.
Paris! Just the name is enough to awaken snoozing butterflies in my stomach. If there's one place I'd rather be now, it is Paris. After reading countless expat blogs, Lonely Planet's guide to Paris, watching 'Midnight in Paris', in fact visiting Paris itself; the charm of the 'City of Lights' never ceases.
Oh but why have I been rambling about Paris so much; it is since I happened to read this lovely book "Kissing My Old Life Au Revoir" by Eliza Watson this weekend. It brought back lovely memories! I've read many more novels with Paris as backdrop just to virtually be there but this is one of the very few which actually introduces you the the places, the people, their lives & their passion.
Samantha is an event planner, works 60+ hours a week, manages to fulfill all the demands(however irritating they are) her clients make, financial security is of utmost importance to her and is expecting a promotion very soon. She arrives in Paris for a job and decides to stay with her carefree little sister Libby for a day, what she doesn't know is that Libby is very much pregnant. When she isn't offered the well deserved promotion and Libby goes missing; Samantha's life goes berserk. Throw in a sexy puppeteer, funeral crashing psychic and you are set for a lazy weekend.
What I really loved about this book is that it isn't another brainless chick lit, it is far more than that. You grow with the characters, relax to the life and adjust to the surroundings. This is one of the stories where you long for a happy ending! I'd definitely recommend it for an easy read!
*Received a copy of this book for an honest review* OH. MY. GOD. I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! From the very first sentence it drew me in and as I continued reading, I found myself getting entangled deeper and deeper into the story! Watson did a very good job with her attention to detail. I almost felt as if I were living through the main character at times; when she laughed I did and when she cried I cried. It took me quite a while to get around to start reading this book and then finishing it due to school and whatnot in 'real life' but upon finishing it, I think I starting going through a bit of a withdrawal. I couldn't get into other books and felt anxious when I realized that there was no more to read. *tries not to panic mid review* I love how things ended out in the book but still... I waaaaant mooooorrrreeeee!!! D: I loved the writing style and the characters and and how everything just flowed smoothly like expensive melted chocolate! It makes me depressed to think that this story is over. This book is going into my favorites shelf and I will definitely be reading it again!
*I'm rushing with this review because i'm out of time but I will update this with a longer review once I get around to reading it again slowly a second time.*
This was a delightful, charming and quick read. It jumps right into the action and it maintains its fast and thrilling pace throughout the entire book. The suspense of knowing the secrets each character is hiding will keep you engaged and reading more and more.
The writing was solid, clear and I could feel the charm of Paris and the characters emitting through the pages. Eliza Watson's writing felt as charming as the city of Paris itself. The characters, admittedly, aren't the most original, but they are like-able and don't take away from the story. They felt realistic, human and easy to picture or relate to.
I definitely enjoyed the female empowerment of the main character as she fights against gender inequalities at her job. I felt it was a nice touch that promotes and reveals a real issue women face in the workforce.
The romance was enjoyable; nothing that really felt swoon worthy. No hot and steamy romance, but it was cute. For me, the highlight of this book was Sam's growth and her learning to love and discover herself.
KISSING MY OLD LIFE AU REVOIR is a contemporary storyline focusing on event planner Samantha Hunter as she encounters a new life rich in French culture, family betrayal and the possibility of a future with no job.
In France, on business, Samantha will discover that family secrets and hidden betrayal run deep. Her sister’s lifestyle and the people she meets force Samantha to make decisions that will affect her job, her personal life and the future. And the future involves a major change in direction for everyone involved. When Sam meets her sister’s neighbor Luc, her imagination and fantasies will soon become her new reality and possibly her future.
Samantha is a woman who had to grow up quickly when her father abandoned the family and was never heard from again. Her mother’s emotional and psychological disorders forced Samantha into the role of mother to her younger sister and has shaped her personality and focus on all things personal and business. The glass ceiling and work place double standard are an eye opening slap in the face, when Samantha learns that the promotion she was hoping for will be given to someone who can ‘party with the big boys’,
KISSING MY OLD LIFE AU REVOIR is a fast paced, detailed storyline that reveals the many different levels of family dysfunction and work place discrimination. Secrets from the past are revealed that open old wounds and cut deeply when Samantha learns the truth behind her sister’s life in Paris and the reasons she left home. But it will be Samantha who once again, must pick up the pieces and put everything and everyone back together.
Eliza pulls the reader into a storyline fraught with heartbreaking betrayal, sorrow and the knowledge that perhaps the only one you can trust is the person in the mirror.
What a terrific read! In 'Kissing My Old Life Au Revoir,' that’s what Samantha Hunter does in such a fun, feisty and charming way.
We meet this event planner in Paris, where she's in the midst of orchestrating a high-end meeting for her beer distributor clients. She's also looking to reconnect with her younger sister, Libby, who has been living in the city. Little did Samantha know that shortly after she arrived, she would be blatantly passed up for a much deserved promotion and her sister would shock her with a surprise of her own and then up and disappear. Her first few days in Paris are not how she ever imagined.
Forced into the streets to find Libby, Samantha takes up with a handsome Parisian, Luc, who not only helps her in finding her sister but teaches her the importance of controlling her own strings to reach her destiny.
For those of us who love women’s fiction and chic lit (waves hand), this is a fabulous book!
I was lucky to be able to work on Kissing My Old Life Au Revoir by Eliza Watson during the editing stages, and I’m excited to bring you my review today! Let’s dive right in…
This book was great fun to read! The story starts off right away with a ton of intrigue, and it only gets better from there. I enjoyed the story between Samantha and her wild-child sister, and the other family issues (and secrets) they must work through. It was nice to Samantha as an independent woman with a career-mind, and her journey with her company was interesting – and frustrating at times – to read about. I loved the Paris setting, the mysterious hottie neighbor, and how fast-paced the book could move. One to read!
I enjoyed Kissing My Old Life Au Revoir, although it was a bit of a slow start for me. The quirky characters engaged me, and yet their real-life problems drew me further and further into the story.
There were enough questions and suspense to keep me anticipating the next chapter, and, at the end, I was racing through the book to find out what happens.
I happen to love Paris, and the author's descriptions brought me the atmosphere and memories that a good book can do. Eliza Watson did a good job evoking the lifestyle that contrasted with the heroine's current corporately driven non-life.
I recommend this book, which I was given in return for an honest review.
Wow! What a heart-warming, and charming women's fiction/romance by Eliza Watson. If I was to go to Paris, (And I wasn't married), I would wish for a Luc of my very own, to whisper sweet nothings into my ear...very sexy!
Samantha has a journey of self-discovery, and healing while finding love with the least expected person, and changes her life for the better. I really liked Sam, she was strong, took charge, but had a big heart, and wanted the best for her sister, niece and herself. Sometimes it takes a "Life-Change" to really find happiness, and I think Sam did just that.
If you read the book for JUST ONE REASON...LUC is it! He is a little sprinkle of Heaven on every page!
Great book and great writer. I am so happy to have a book that grabs you right from the beginning and keeps you coming back chapter after chapter. I look forward to reading more books like this from Eliza Watson.
A fast paced, interesting story about Samantha and her visit to Paris where she finds that her sister has disappeared. Samantha struggles to sort through the relationship with her boyfriend, her loss of her promotion, and a secret that has been hidden by her sister. The sexy puppeteer helps Samantha find the importance of family and a new life.
This is an excellent book. I started to read it and just couldn't put it down. Samantha Hunter, an event planner, escorts a group of distributors to Paris where she discovers she is passed over for promotion. Her life changes when she searches for her free-spirited sister. It is a truly inspirational book to read. Try it, you'll like it for sure.
I was really pleasant surprised by this story. I loved that I never know what was going to happen when I turn the page. Both the story and characters was really very well-written, deep, realistic and a really joy to be in company with.
This book is a mix of my favorite subjects: love, great food, Paris, puppies, flowers, family and friends. Eliza Watson’s characters are well developed and believable. Samantha and Libby are the sisters I always wanted. Luc... well you have to read about him..oh my...now every time I smell cinnamon I will think of him! And I so want “Mr. Fleurs” as my neighbor! “Kissing My Old Life Au Revoir” is a great read that touches on self-worth, slowing down to get in touch with who you are, taking those second chances and forgiveness. Eliza, please tell me I will see more of Sophie, Etienne and Cecile in the future. I would love to read more about them! Now about that Brie, apricot, black olive and salami sandwich...can I substitute prosciutto for the salami? This book was won in Eliza Watson’s newsletter giveaway. Thank you soo much Eliza for the wonderful introduction to your writing! This was a fantastic read I could not put it down!
Possibly too similar.. I'm confused because the blurb referred to it as if it was written after but this was written first according to the publication date on Amazon.
So although it only briefly mentions Rachel Shaw I kind of think you need to read it first.. the characters have too many similarities though Sam like Rachel goes through a realisation that her work shouldn't be consuming her life. Luc like Declan has a Celtic cross tattoo and bracelet representing the love he had for a now dead wife. Too many red heads. I can go on but you need to read it..
I gave it 3 stars and that felt mean.. can't give a half so it's got 4.. it's not a bad read but she needs to broaden her descriptive language and create completely new characters not just rename and partially reinvent old ones for new books.
I don't do book reviews like you keep seeing, as I find that some give too much of the plot away and I personally hate that, as it makes the book not worth reading. I much prefer to take the authors back cover write up as a review as it can either intrigue you enough to read the book of provide you enough information to make you decide that the book is not for you. My review rules are: The more stars, the more I liked it. If there are too many typos or errors the less stars I give If the storyline or plot is poor or contains too many errors, the characters are too weak, the ending lacking something, then the less stars I give. Simple, uncomplicated and to the point without giving anything away. Some of the books I read have been given to me by the author as a pre-release copy and this does not bias my reviews in any way.
Samantha Hunter has just arrived in Paris as an event planner for a Beer Company. She stops off to see her sister and is surprised to find her sister living in a small apartment and pregnant. To make things worse her fiancé who also works for the same company drops some info that Samantha will not be getting the promotion she thought she was entitled to. Samantha quits her job and dumps her boyfriend. What follows are interesting moments that leaves Samantha wondering what will happen next. I will not go into more detail because I do not want to give the details away. This is a fun as well as a little sweet read. I think any woman would enjoy reading this. I definitely want to read more of Eliza Watson's books such as The Travel Mishaps of Caity Shaw series.
Samantha is a hardworking event executive who is in Paris where she hooks up with Libby her sister and meets irresistible Luc, the neighbor. Libby is pregnant then runs off when the baby is born. Leaving Samantha with a niece, trying to discover where her sister is and who the father is, taking her all over Paris with amorous Luc close by. A cute and cosy dual romance for Sam and for Libby. With beautiful Parisian settings, french countryside and cuisine. A slow burn romance that had a hea. Highly recommend it Kerry Kennedy Author
Samantha Hunter is an event planner who is too focused on her clients and she is passed up for a promotion. Samantha decides to quit her job and search for her sister Libby in Paris to bring her back home. As Samantha searches for her sister in Paris she uncovers family secrets. Samantha turns to Luc her sister’s neighbor to help search for her sister. Samantha grows and matures as she continues life’s new adventures. I really enjoyed this contemporary romance fiction novel.
Samantha had gone to Paris for work, expecting to receive a big promotion and find time to catch up with her little sister. Libby turned out to be pregnant by an inappropriate lover and too much of a free spirit for Sam's buttoned-down life. But, there is something about Paris that keeps tearing Sam away from her workaholic future. Does she really want that promotion she wasn't offered? Time will tell.
As someone who loves Paris and France, I was drawn to this novel. It did not disappoint. The concept of a business trip turning into a life-altering event was interesting and fun. I liked the character dynamics, and the unexpected twists and turns. There was also a message, that your path in life can take a drastic change ... for the better.
Oh I absolutely loved this story. I found it so beautifully written many times my heart was in my throat for what the characters were dealing with. But like all good stories love and goodness prevail. This story really reminded me of how important it is to have relationships with those whom we love and never let them get forgotten or pushed aside.
I loved the characters; couldn't figure out why Libby stayed away from Sam, her sister, for so long. She had a complicated situation, but still. The story explained why but it was painful for Sam not to know where Libby was. Loved the story and the tour through the streets of Paris
Yay, got to my 2022 reading challenge goal with 35 mins to spare!
This was a cute little book. I thought it was going to be like Emily In Paris, but not quite. Kooky characters, a bit of intrigue and fast paced, a nice little holiday read to end the year - although generally the narrator is annoying and judgmental, the “supporting cast” were much more endearing.
I typically enjoy Eliza's madcap romances, but this one was just too much! There's artistic license and then there's this wild chaos of the most unrealistic birth/postpartum nonsense. The gist and romance bits are typical Eliza, but I could not get over all the malarkey around Libby's storyline.
Seems like a caper with a cast of characters, each memorable and amusing. Funny how so many events can force moments of introspection that force reconsideration, forgiveness, and change. And no time or place is better for those clash of calamities to become the necessary catalyst than Paris.
