Las Meninas es un cuadro famosísimo y vertiginoso: un retrato de Felipe IV visto, no desde el punto de vista del pintor, sino desde la perspectiva del modelo, siendo a la vez un autorretrato y una obra que coloca al espectador dentro de la escena, sustituyéndolo al invisible monarca… o tal vez al mismo pintor viéndose en un espejo?
Esta novela gráfica también es fascinante: un ingenioso y a menudo gracioso acercamiento, por todos los frentes, a la vida de Velázquez y a la inmensa influencia de su obra. La narración, al estilo de Citizen Kane, salta de fragmento en fragmento, de Madrid a Roma, de Goya a Picasso y Dalí, y de Quevedo a Gracián, Buero Vallejo y Foucault. Finalmente, nos deja casi tan aturdidos y satisfechos que la propia contemplación de Las Meninas en el Museo del Prado.

Por fortuna, García y Olivares no han hecho una biografía gráfica rutinaria, como tanto abundan últimamente, ni han pergeñado un pastiche a la Reverte, sino que han hecho una obra muy personal y poliédrica, casi un retrato cubista del artista (no en vano Picasso es uno de los protagonistas del libro) lleno de referencias que demuestran la vigencia y la complejidad de la obra de este pintor.

Prolijo como pocos en temas (el arte, la ambición, la soberbia, el deseo, el honor por mencionar unos pocos), en plasticidad y en expresividad. Y en profundidad: hay que darle unas cuantas relecturas. Canela fina.

This is one of those books I picked up out of curiosity and I have say that I am rather pleased I did.
The book is an intriguing idea - at the heart telling the story of the painter and his works but on top of that you have short interludes which focus on other painters and the impact the original work had on them - be it challange them to create their own version of greatness to driving them on the produce their own masterpieces.
The whole book is inked in a highly stylised manner which limited pallet colours which I think adds so much to the mood and temper of the story rather than hinder or distract. This is an award winning book in its native language and I can easily see why.

La primera vez que fui al Museo del Prado tenía tres o cuatro años. Me llevaron: mi madre es maestra de primaria y fue una excursión de su clase. Yo era una niña curiosa y despreocupada con tendencia a vagar y perderme. Me han contado, mi madre me ha contado, que en una galería solté su mano y me perdí. Fui directa hacia Las Meninas, me encontró a los pies del cuadro. Lloré cuando me apartó de allí porque quería meterme dentro.

A striking graphic novel about one of my favorite paintings, Las Meninas by Diego Velazquez. The bold art style is modern yet calls back to the strong chiaroscuro used in the Baroque period. The story jumps around a bit, but I really enjoyed seeing how Las Meninas has influenced so many amazing artists. I wish that there had been more about the actual painting, but the story of Velazquez's life inform ideas surrounding the piece, like the usage of mirrors and Velazquez's desire for nobility. Overall an interesting and enjoyable graphic novel about a phenomenal painting. 3.75/5. Knowledge of art history is necessary for full enjoyment of the text.

Me gusto aunque a veces Velázquez me pareció desquiciante. Lo que me pareció curioso fueron los personajes que iban a pareciendo y como los conectaban, se que es ficción, aunque los autores detallan la bibliografia en la que se basaron. Tiene muchos detalles de edición como cambio de colores, forma de viñetas etc, que en ocasiones me descolocaron, pero que puedo llegar a comprender luego de terminarlo.

Una vez más el lenguaje del cómic resulta ideal para contar aquello para lo que las palabras y las imágenes por separado no son suficientes. En este caso se trata de Velázquez y su genio, y también su época, y su influencia en los pintores españoles contemporáneos y posteriores. Y no es sólo una cuestión de dibujos, viñetas y bocadillos, sino de la propia maquetación como elemento esencial para el desarrollo de la narración. Por no hablar de las escenas intercaladas de los artistas posteriores influidos por la pintura de Velázquez, que son un verdadero hallazgo
Lo que no entiendo muy bien es el título, porque "Las Meninas" habla de muchas más cosas que las Meninas, aunque es verdad que las páginas dedicadas al cuadro son impresionantes y justifican por sí mismas el libro entero.
En fin, una nueva joya de esa estupenda editorial que es Astiberri.

A Graphic Novel that explores the life of master Baroque painter Diego Velázquez and ultimately the enduring influence of his most famous painting Las Meninas. The book does not follow a linear timeline as Garcia allows for diversions to other periods where other artists explore their art through Velázquez (the diversions are expertly distinguished through the use of colour). There were times where I felt that I limited knowledge of art history held me back from the full enjoyment of the book but that is my limitation and not that of the book. While some end notes would have been nice, I can appreciate that a more academic approach may have detracted from the enjoyment a bit.

I have seen the painting in person at Museo del Prado. I also visited the Picasso Museum in Barcelona with the paintings inspired by Las Meninas. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the backstory.
The book is wonderful. The only criticisms I have is that it is at times hard to keep the characters straight and that it is sometimes difficult to tell when and where we are in the story. The coloring of the background helps with the timeline, but wasn't enough to prevent me from being taken out of the story a few times.
Overall, I really liked the book and would recommend it to anyone interested in art and/or history.

You only need one graphic novel about the life of Velasquez and the impossibly long shadow he cast over painting. I am happy to report this is it. Garcia has written a great biography that jumps through time in top shelf storyteller mode. Olivaras has a very striking style that reminds me of folk art and post-Impressionists.

Podoba mi się sposób, w jaki jest namalowana: styl jest prosty, ale bardzo ciekawy; dodatkowo, ilustrator w świetny sposób miesza w poszczególnych kadrach życie malarza, a także próby wykreowania dzieła inspirowanego „Las meninas” przez innych artystów. Pomysł autora na ukazanie życia Velázqueza poprzez dążenie do namalowania dzieła idealnego — genialne.
Wszystko naprawdę bardzo mi się podobało, mimo że zdarzało się, że nie wszystko rozumiałam. Mam nadzieję, że kiedyś będę miała okazję przeczytać to po polsku :)

Excelente, una obra que en principio parece un simple recorrido por la vida y la obra de Velázquez y una explicación de la influencia de su obra en varios de los genios de distintas artes de los siglos siguientes, en realidad nos plantea varios misterios. Si tomamos los sucesos que se nos cuentan en la novela gráfica como añadidos con intención narrativa e investigamos un poco sobre los detalles de la obra de las meninas, podemos llegar a distintas conclusiones que acertadas o no, el caso es que nos dan bastante que pensar...
Una gran novela gráfica que, siendo bastante accesible y entretenida, tambien invita a la reflexión y la relectura.

Este cómic intenta contar la historia de Velázquez a la vez que cuenta la historia de su cuadro más famoso: Las Meninas. Aunque la premisa es interesante, la estructura del cómic en sí es un desastre. Los saltos en el tiempo junto con algunas historias tangenciales complican seguir la historia. El estilo artístico es interesante y algunas partes son bastante graciosas. Sin embargo, la obra en sí deja una sensación de potencial no aprovechado, de objetivo no cumplido. Flojo.

I ended up reading this twice because I had a bit of a hard time catching/understanding everything. I assume it isn't so much a 'lost in translation' issue as much as a 'I have no understanding of the history of Spanish art' issue. So if you do read, take the time to be near a computer or phone and google the things you don't understand or want more information on. A very engaging story and look into the creative process though.

Las Meninas is a truly strange and rich painting, and this biography centers on that particular work as well as the influence of Velazquez (be it Dali or Picasso), and just how impactful he was to Spain and the art world. The book starts with Foucoult and includes other vignettes spanning the ages. Sometimes the characters are hard to tell apart because the style of the graphic novel, but it is a clever and well composed collection overall. Part biography and part art history.

Fantastic graphic novel that introduced me to a period, an artist and a painting that I had very little knowledge of. Left me entertained, better-educated and thirsty to learn more. Highest recommendation. (If you're looking to use this for schooling, know that it would probably merit an very mild PG-13 rating.)

Después de la charla con los autores tenía ganas de leer este cómic. No me ha decepcionado y he de decir que creo que haberlo leído después del análisis de Javier Olivares me ha hecho disfrutarlo más. No estoy segura de que me hubiera dado cuenta de muchos de los detalles que encierra este libro.

Really beautiful - I only wish it had footnotes or some more historical guides detailing the rumors/stories behind the may or may not have happened events it presents during Velazquez and other artists' lives.

Que este libro haya ganado el Premio Nacional del Cómic de 2015 ya aumenta las ganas de leerlo, pero si es sobre pintura e historia, la cosa mejora mucho más.
Y es que, aunque el libro describe, como su título nos indica, el cómo el gran pintor Velázquez llegó a pintar su cuadro más famoso, Las Meninas, es un vehículo para contarnos también lo difícil que fue que le concedieran la Cruz de Santiago. Hoy en día solo la conocemos por él, porque aparece en el cuadro ya mencionado con esta cruz en sus ropajes, pero entonces era el símbolo de nobleza por encima de los demás.
Aunque era hijo de un hidalgo, Velázquez era considerado pintor, y alguien que se ganaba la vida trabajando no podía nunca optar a este galardón. Por ello, él se excusa en que el hace arte, y de manera gratuita para el rey, de manera que este lo mantiene en su palacio para que tenga libertad de creación.
Además, este libro contempla muchas más épocas que en la que el pintor vivió: habla de otros artistas que se vieron influenciados por su trabajo, mucho más tarde. Algunos ejemplos que aparecen son Goya, Picasso o Dalí.
Los tonos del libro van cambiando según cambian las épocas que decribe, y así, aunque cambia constantemente de tiempo e incluso lugar, es fácil seguir el ritmo del cómic.
Es un cómic entretenido, en el que aprender un poco más de este gran pintor español, al que todos los posteriores artistas han venerado. Para los amantes del arte y de este pintor, también recomiendo la novela de misterio Velázquez desaparecido, de Laura Cumming. Y es que, ¿quién no admira a este gran pintor?
