Welcome to Kay Shanee's Reading Korner Kay is forty something wife and mother, born and raised in the Midwest. During the day, she is a high school teacher. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends. Her favorite pastime is reading and writing romance novels about the dopeness of BLACK LOVE.
This couple went through a lot….I thought they would have more problems with his ex Angela, but it turned out that CoCo’s ex Jason was more of a trouble maker…The couple got through it….but, she still had to deal with issues with her parents.
The title is kind of misleading. The only thing that was mildly unconventional about this story are the age gap (she is 39, he is 25), the rest was textbook traditional. I really liked how the age-gap was handled: it had an impact on the story that felt real. It was insta-everything: they basically move in together the day they meet and get married after knowing each other for four days (that happens fairly early in the book so I'm not using a spoiler tag). To me the relationship development was lacking because their first 4 days together were summarized and not shown. This book had a LOT of drama. I mean both MCs had a CRAZY/stalker ex that was over the top. There was also family drama. The drama aspect was mostly fine by me (even though I wanted more on her family's side of the drama). The rating is mostly due to Malcolm. He was overprotective, over possessive and honestly it's a fine line between Malcolm and abusive behaviour IMO. For example, he decided that he did not want her to have a male OBGyn so he requested a change over her (weak) protest. NO, being in love does not given you the right to make that type of decision. That's one example but really his behaviour was OTT possessive with the MC and his younger sister and his mother. Malcolm really annoyed me and basically had no personality outside of his possessiveness. CoCo did not do enough to stand up for herself IMO but I liked the dynamic she had with her 2 girlfriends! I mostly liked her. I'm not sure I'll pick something else by this author but maybe 🤷♀️
Love Unconventional was a little slow but, it eventually gained some steam and hit the ground runnin’. I’m not a fan of the younger man, older woman troupe but, I really enjoyed this book. I loved, loved, loved me some CoCo and Malcolm! They were so compatible as a couple that their age didn’t really make a difference. When CoCo and Malcolm meet, there’s an instant attraction between them. They pretty much fall in love with each other on site. After being holed up in the house for five days ahem (clears throat) “getting to know each other,” they head to Vegas on a whim and get married. Of course, because of their age difference, everyone has something to say but Malcolm shut that down real quick. I just loved how he didn’t hesitate to go to war for CoCo. As Kay Shanee said, he did not play about her. The only person that had a problem with their relationship was CoCo’s mama. That woman was a bytch. She treated poor CoCo so horribly and it was obvious she played favorites with her sister. When CoCo’s dad hit us with that bomb, you get a clear understanding why she treated CoCo the way she did. But, I fault Mr. Sinclair because he was well aware of how Mary treated CoCo and he never said anything. Once the Sinclair family secret was out, CoCo was willing to go to therapy and still try to have some semblance of a relationship with Mary as long as she acknowledged how she treated her and apologize. Do y’all know this heffa refused to apologize?!!! That tells me everything I need to know about Mary. CoCo did what I would’ve done and walked away. Don’t nobody got time to try to reason with someone holding onto a 40 year grudge. Love Unconventional was a good read. It really does prove age ain’t nothin’ but a number.
Edited to add on 6/22/2020 - I perused several synopses of other books written by this author, and they peaked my interest. I plan to read a few others. Hopefully, the editing has improved.
This storyline was about a younger man (age 25) and an older woman (age 39 or 40) who found love when they least expected it. I thought the storyline worked well, but I had difficulty connecting with the characters in the book for various reasons (but that’s really my problem). For inquiring minds, there is a great deal of sex between the couple and crude language is used throughout the book. Most annoying to me are the never ending editing issues. For these reasons, the book didn’t work for me; however, I can see how it might appeal to other readers.
I liked this quick read, the age gap trope worked. If, “put it on him make him wanna marry me” needed a book- this is it! Five days and you proposed sir?! Okay.. ❤️
Young man, Older woman caught up in the rapture of respect and devotion. Yes, honey. There is nothing like a young man that has his business together. Malcolm was a whole mess. One minute I liked him, the next I couldn't stand his possessive self. Lawd his overbearing, overprotective self got on my last nerves. I thought I was going to have to beat Alisha, but she bowed out gracefully. I still want to strangle Mrs. Mary Bitterbone lol. Coco's dad was weak as water, but cool. I liked Coco's spirit. She had a submissive and peaceful calm about her. I want the lawd to help me because I haven't gotten there yet lol. I thoroughly enjoyed the book though. Will there be more? I'm asking for a friend.
Kay! Ma’am! I don’t know what kinda creative lab you have because everything coming out of it is pure fire🔥. I am one of those people who highlights on my kindle. The whole page is highlighted because it’s just that GOODT! Chapter 11 & 12– I almost didn’t make it lol
My TBR List is a little ridiculous at this point but you just keep writing dope books.
I loved Coco & Malcolm’s story! Love doesn’t have a schedule, it does what it wants. We just have to be open to it.
Malcolm has so much swag and really was wise beyond his years. I loved his relationship with his sister, mom, and dad. Age r ally wasn’t. It a number when it came to their union. CoCo was so sweet and Malcolm complimented her perfectly. He protected her fiercely and he loved her so passionately. CoCo’s family dynamic wasn’t the best. Her “mom” was out of pocket with her and her dad allowed it for far too long. I was surprised to learn her parents back ground but it all made sense. Great read!
My first introduction to this author and thank you to my reading buddy for this recommendation!
Malcolm is my new book boo! He is absolutely perfect and I loved him for CoCo;. I'm smiling as I think about them! He was strong, assertive, supportive, seductive, charismatic and had zero effs to give! CoCo was a sexy, sultry, supportive, sensitive queen who was looking for her king; she didn't know he would be younger but she ain't but a number, right?
I can't wait to dive into other books by this author!
I absolutely loved this love story! It is one of the best I’ve read in a very long time! The storyline was excellent and it flowed so well! This was most definitely a page turner! Once I started reading I could not stop! This was my first read by this author and it most definitely won’t be my last!
Just beautiful. Age ain't nothing but a number and you can't put a time limit on love. Thank you for giving them their own story because I fell in love with them in the short story. Job well done. Until next time❤
Malcolm is every woman's dream! How he loved and protected Coco had me in my feelings. Now I wanted someone to choke out Coco 's mom, for how she treated her; but it all worked out. Great job. Thanks for putting Gurnee on the map. (Smile). Keep the books coming.
Cocoa and Malcolm's story was an unexpected journey with a pretty cool outcome. The May, December romance was a very good story. I'll keep an eye out for this author in the future.
Malcolm fell for Coco as soon as he saw her. Coco fell for Malcolm too. Even though their relationship started very fast they couldn't help falling in love with each other. Glad they have their happily ever after.
I’m usually not into the age gap trope but this was a good read! I truly enjoyed Coco and Malcolm unconventional romance! Malcolm was so mature I often forgot he was young young! There was certainly enough drama to keep me interested!
Splendid read! Malcom and Coco had me hanging on to every last word until the very end. Writing was on point and the delivery was perfect. Y’all look out! She through a twist in there that took it to another level! This was my first read by Kay Shanee and it will not be my last!
I really like this book wish it was longer were the mom would have mad up with them. I understand why she was mad, but she took it out on the wrong person.
I like how Malcolm and Coco kept running into each other and he took the opportunity to get to know her better. They spent five beautiful days together and decided to elope. I'm glad Coco didn't let their age difference make her miss out on love and having a family of the own. I don't like how Carl allowed Mary to mistreat Coco because of the surprising circumstances that surrounded Coco's conception but he did stand his ground in the end. I'm glad that Corinne dropped Noah and that Jordan and Patryce got it together.
Love unconventional was a very interesting book.. The storyline was good fast paced very well written. Age ain’t nothing but a number when true love is involved! Enjoyed the characters.. will definitely recommend this standalone
This book was so good! I loved how Malcolm & Coco met and it was basically love at first sight. They didn’t care about any outside opinion and focused on loving each other! Definitely a 5 star read.
Wow! Such A great book! I usually don’t even like to read books where the female character is older than the male character. However, Kay Shanee did such a good job with this book. I loved Malcolm’s assertiveness. He definitely is a man’s man, straight up, Alpha male. He took control, he was confident he was all that and then some.. I was glad that Coco put aside her reservation to allow her man to love her. The climax of the book was a nice twist, I didn’t see it coming. Very well thought out book, excellent reading! Kay Shanee never disappoints!
I have read two of your books so far and I loved both of them. Your writing skills are excellent and I love the way you spin your plots. I highly recommend your books.
I completed Love, Hate and Everything in Between (short stories) recently so I was familiar with Malcolm and CoCo's situation. It was good to read more about this couple as their relationship flourished rather quickly. I enjoyed reading how Malcolm kept it real when it came to how he felt about Coco and at times his actions were comical. Characters were realistic and likable with the exception of Mrs. Sinclair. She took bitterness to a new level. Storyline was nicely written with relevant information. Enjoyable read
The story of Malcolm and Coco had me all the way in my feelings. The immediate chemistry between these two told me from jump that their story would be one of a kind. All the twist and turns had my neck hurting. This is a must read. Never judge a book by its cover and remember aged wine always taste better when you have a nice soft pair of lips drinking it down.
