Honestly this is such a sad and emotional series. It has quite a few elements incorporated within in a thoughtful manner.
I’m still loving the art. It’s witty and charming while being consistent. That’s pretty much my #artgoals.
I’m not even gonna lie, this book was a little struggling to go through. It has some intense scenes that were fueled by emotions that suited the situation. (Ex. Hatred towards a select group of ppl)
—— Spoilers ahead.
The one thing I don’t get is the slave stuff. She isn’t treated like a slave but maybe it offers a degree of comfort/control to Naofumi. I mean, I know she wouldn’t majorly act out against Naofumi unless forced to (suspect that to be in future volumes) so why even have the mark? But she agreed to it this second time, so we do have consent in this equation.
There were rampant typos and misspellings in volume 1 of this manga, but I don't think I saw any in volume 2. And this volume had one of my favorite scenes, of the infamous duel. It simultaneously breaks and warms your heart. I love this series so much.
So in this volume, Raphtalia kind of just grows up overnight...and the MC has to fight Cocky Spear Guy (who wants Raphy to himself even though 'SHES A SLAVE HES GOT HER UNDER CONTROL')
And the girl that sets up Naofumi turns out to be the King's Daughter. DAMN. No wonder Naofumi's a gloomy guy when it seems set up for him to fail.
Like I said, I feel like I'm cheating my goodreads challenge. I remember this very well from the time I read it before. I really love when the crusty protagonist shows emotion. Also, can I just say that I love the art in this.
By the time I read this, I had read the first volume of the light novels and watched part of the first anime season. For comparison, this manga volume covers about the second half of the first light novel and a couple episodes of the anime. This is Naofumi visiting the Dragon Hourglass for the first time, the Second Wave, and then his duel with Motoyatsu. Then, of course, the aftermath of said duel and Raphtalia's backstory. I don't really have much to say about this volume.
It does an alright job of conveying the story. A reader will know enough of what happens to follow along when another real-life fan talks about it or when these events are referenced later in the story. However, its medium prevents it from conveying as much information as the light novel. Without knowledge outside the manga, a reader might not understand some things. The anime outshines it in visual appeal, providing more of a spectacle and adding emotion through voice acting. The manga just doesn't provide anything that the light novel or anime don't do better.
This is not to say this volume is bad on its own merit. That is definitely not the case. The art looks good. The arrangement of cells moves the story along at a good clip, faster during action scenes and slower during more tender ones. The way that the aftermath of the Shield vs Spear duel is handled is particularly effective. Specifically, the way the manga presents Naofumi's realization of Raphtalia's true age and appearance captures the emotions he must be feeling at that point very well.
I just recommend one of the other two mediums.
Trickster Eric Novels gives "Rising of the Shield Hero - manga volume 2" a passing grade.
This book is book 2 of the series and mercy it is certainly a lot more dramatic than book one. It draws the reader in to understand that the shield hero is the true hero of the 4 heroes and that he truly cares for his comrades no matter how much he continues to think that he doesn't.
This princess of the kingdom is absolutely a horrible person. She has earned a spot on my least favorite character list along with the Spear Hero.
Excited for Book 3! This book series really draws you in!
Standing ovation to Naofumi and Raphtalia. Naofumi, hated and blamed for criminal acts he did not commit, helps saves the very people who despise him. And Raphtalia fights against the idiots who "think they know best" because they believe the only person who claimed the wrongs against Naofumi. This manga (and anime) will make you angry, hate, bring tears to your eyes, laugh and fall in love with certain characters. This definitely is not your typically isekai.
At first I didn't expect much about this volume. I must say that even I was not so interested for first chapters. Then suddenly happened few events that grabbed my attention a lot. We can see an important evolution in the relationship of Raphtalia and Naofumi and in the end of the volume the appareance of a new character that will be important from now.
Another 5 stars! I'm speechless! I don't know how to express my emotions towards this manga, but one thing for sure, that lady is unbelievable! That lady is not a lady. She is a monster! She is a real monster! She is a spoil brat that everyone couldn't do anything to correct her because she is king's daughter. I really hate her!
My buddy recommended the anime for this series. I ended up binge watching the entire series and bought all the books. The character development is nothing less than phenomenal. The art style is visually appealing. 10/10 will reread.
The second volume was a little better than the first one, since there was less misspellings, but the character developments and the action was spot on❤️😎
