The story "Stained Masonry" tells of a warrior mentally enslaved to a wizard, who is forced to confront an unbeatable horror in order to obtain a powerful scepter. A first meeting between human and alien is described in "Contact High," with unexpected results. In "Routine Running" a man gains the love of a beautiful brilliant woman, loses her to a cult with strange ideas about reality, and gets her back--but may end up losing the universe. "The Face of the Deep" examines the different ways science and religion view God and nature and turns them on their heads. And not for the faint of heart is "The Primordium Crisis," in which a rescue mission lands on a planet of inexplicable phenomena and begins suffering casualties, to their sanity as well as their lives.
