The Devil's Daughter #4

Hell or High Water

Rate this book
A light conversation over coffee tosses the devil’s daughter out of the frying pan of life’s problems and into the fiery depths of hell.

Sere Mal-Laurette was warned against meeting Jennifer, the real woman behind her doppelgänger body. However, she didn’t mention that instruction to Jennifer during their numerous psychically bonded moments. So when Jennifer shows up in front of Sere’s apartment, the doppelgänger doesn’t see much choice other than to invite the housewife in for a cup of coffee.

Before the day is out, Myles’s sweet little dog has turned into a hellhound, Sere’s friend and sidekick Fisher has succumbed to his demonic possession, and supersized crawfish have emerged from the swamp. Sere is forced to wonder if she should have heeded the warnings about Jennifer. But is the widening of the hell mouth a result of one morning’s coffee conversation, or is something more sinister at work?

Sere has plenty of other explanations to choose from. There are the lost souls of the damned that Marjory Laroque cast into hell in her attempt to raise a new devil. There’s the fact that Sere’s sweet angel and mother figure, Sanguine, has been imprisoned. Worst of all, Sere’s very presence among the living could be the cause of the impending apocalypse. Once again she needs help curbing the chaos, but this time, she’ll call on her support system in hell.

Out of all the books I’ve read in the series so far, I think this book is the best. Sere has finally figured out her place in the human world, and she is settling in to accepting help when she needs it. Seeing “old” friends is great, too, and I love it when they are helping Sere. I sometimes get a little confused at how everything operates for the doppelgangers, but this isn’t really enough to kill my enjoyment. The end was a shocker, and I can’t wait to see what’s coming next. If you are a fan of this series, you will love this latest. I really do recommend this series. I was provided the e-book which I voluntarily reviewed.

Of all the books in The Devil’s Daughter series, Hell or High Water has been my kryptonite. Why you may ask? Because I have attempted three times to write this review. Each time I have the book nearby to go back for referencing and end up re-reading the whole book. Folks I have had this book for a month and have now read it three times! I just can’t seem to peel myself away from all that Mr. Chase has thrown into this book.

Yowza! Just when I thought things could not get any crazier after Joe’s death, Jennifer pays a visit to Sere. That just sets off a series of craziness Sere has to deal with that had me on the edge of my seat to devour it all. Sere has repeatedly been told doppelgänger and reals should stay far, far away from each other but when Jennifer shows up…Sigh. Sere you should have known best and ran the other direction screaming. And that is just the beginning of Sere’s problems! And OhEmGee that ending. Don’t know if I want to call that a cliffhanger exactly, more like a jaw dropper that is going to have me feening for the next book until it is in my grabby hands. Which is probably why I can’t stop reading this book.

Visits from reals, demonic possession, supersized crawfish, an impending apocalypse, questionable loyalties, and a YUMMY hot bartender. It all sounds like a crazy normal day in Sere’s life and I LOVE how she has grown into the human world. She may be badda$$ but she still has a few things to figure out. Watching her stumble along while fighting the good fight is made this the best series I have read this year.

The last couple of books I’ve picked up have been… intense. The type of intense that has the main characters either fighting for their own life or desperately trying to save someone else. When I turned the last page in Hell or High Water, I knew I needed a break. I loved this book. Honestly, The Devil’s Daughter gets better with each installment, but wow…

Sere has opened herself up – in more ways than one. She has inadvertently become closer to Jennifer, which is loaded with all kinds of ways to mess things up. Even the most innocent of encounters seems to bring about life-altering consequences… and not just for Sere and Jennifer. That’s not all that’s going on though. It seems that every time Sere makes a move, there’s a new threat lurking around a dark corner… or under dark water. Secrets are revealed – most of them kept from Sere from those closest to her. New allies come into play and trust is tested more than once. The one constant and grounding force for Sere through everything is Bart. To say that Hell or High Water was a page turner would be a HUGE understatement.

A lot of ground was covered and I’m not ashamed to say that some of it was a blur – which means I’ll probably have to pay closer attention when I read this one again, because I definitely will be reading it again – along with the rest of the series. It also piqued my curiosity about Sere’s life and her makeshift family’s before The Devil’s Daughter, which is just one of the reasons why I started the Malveaux Curse Mystery Series. The first book, Dog Days of Voodoo was a fun read and I can’t wait to start You, Me, and the Voodoo Queen. You don’t have to start with that series to follow or understand The Devil’s Daughter, but I found myself wanting the background into this world created by G.A. Chase. So far, I haven’t been disappointed. 😉

Speaking of not being able to wait… after the final chapter in Hell or High Water, the wait for Hell Away from Home is going to be torturous. It wasn’t so much of a cliff hanger as a surprising revelation that could go either way for the fate of a lot of people.

I received Hell or High Water in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Book granted to me in exchange for an honest review.

Hell or High Water - book four in the Devil’s Daughter series is a thrillingly dangerous roller coaster ride that rapidly transports readers from the human realm, thru the gates of hell and into places not quite here or there. All are necessary twists and turns to thwart off those beings from below that seek new lives topside (feasting on paltry humans or worse yet possessing them).

At the helm, ‘whatever it takes to get the dirty deed done’, is Serephine Mal Laurette, supernatural sole daughter of the devil himself - Baron Malveaux. With Sere’s batteries fully charged, courtesy of her plaything and constant savior Bart, and her human, chocolate chip cookie making, doppelgänger Jennifer, she’ll stop the evil beings and close down topside access - or die trying. And this time dying may equal dead dead since Sere’s primary ‘charger’ Jennifer has been somehow magically whisked into Hell’s web for a round of retribution.

You like:
*All things mystical and supernatural
*A female heroine that’s gifted with strength and powers that only the devil himself can impart
*Bits of steamy and salacious strewn about
*An interesting and unique storyline that can stand on its own or easily be enhanced by reading all of the books

If so, you’ve been matched to Hell or High Water! Well, whatcha waiting for? Get a’ reading!

Jennifer, Sere’s doppelganger shows up in New Orleans for Joe’s wake and since Sere didn’t warn her that they aren’t supposed to be in physical contact she is left with nothing else to do but talk to the woman. Then to make matters worse, she receives a call from Ann, Fisher’s wife that something is really wrong with him and that they are rushing him to the hospital. Ann doesn’t know about Fisher’s demonic possession and the team is hoping to help him without informing her of the truth.

Chase has a unique perspective on hell and reality that has made for a fantastic series. It’s not something that has been done repeatedly but is new and refreshing. If you are looking for a new paranormal author than this is the one for you.

Sere Mal-Laurette is the devil’s daughter — really, THE Devil’s Daughter. She escaped from Hell, and demons are trying to do the same. Sere sends them back, with the help of her hunky human boyfriend, Bart, and her group of free-thinking human scientists and paranormal experts. Unfortunately, the humans can’t stop the evil-doers who pitch Sere back into Hell. She’s fighting demons and all sorts of hellishly scary creatures, and battling hurricane floods in Hell, all while trying to get back home to the real world — New Orleans. This series of books is fun and original with plenty of creep factor, and each book ups the ante. I recommend this installment to anyone who wants a great read and to learn how to kill boat-sized crawfish. You never know when you might need that!

Again this series gets better with each story and grabs me from the very first page.
Sere and Bart back again and becoming a very solid team.
I loved that Jennifer was more involved in this story it was great to get to know her better, I think she and Sere are awesome.
I love that Sere is growing more human and realizing its good to have friends, that she doesn’t need to do everything on her own.
Doodlebugs characters is becoming more interesting, so many secrets it's going to be a fun journey finding them all out.

A thrilling, hellish ride that kept me fully engaged and entertained.

Sere really likes to push things then wonder why things go wrong, Jennifer turns up at her place and next thing Hell is having a hissy fit causing those who are links to Hell to get extra feisty but thats not the worst. We find out more about Sere's past as well as whats going on in Hell along with whats spilling out of Hells mouth. There is lots to deal with in this book and I feel like things are about to ramp up in regards to Sere's past even more in the next book and likely not in a good way!

Mutant swamp creatures or human enemies ,

Still dealing with the personal loss of Joe and blossoming romance ,Sere has to figure out which problem to deal with first so getting ambushed into conversation and friendship wasn't on her list .
Can't wait for the next book to see if can Sere prevail with the next enemy about to attack ?

I have truly been enjoy in following Sere along on her journey. She discovers more and more about herself as she battles with her companions against evil demons and humans trying to gain immortality alike. GA Chase does a great job bringing you into the story and making you feel as if you are right there with Sere and the others.

This is a great addition to this series. The story picks up a few days following the events of the previous book and does not stop. The story is entertaining, full of adventure, and great characters. I enjoy following along with the characters. I look forward to seeing what happens next.
