Book Review "The Heist Artist" by Vish Dhamija
Overall Verdict:- Light, Interesting and Uncomplicated Heist

A mysterious man walking towards the tunnel light in the cover, the mention of a heist in the title itself and the well written colophon enough to get anyone interested in what lay inside. It had been a long time that I had read something wherein the protagonist was portrayed in a grey shade.

“The Heist Artist” revolves around the planning and execution of an art theft of a lost but precious Van Gogh painting by the sneaky Vagh Pratap Singh, aka “The Captain” and the complete chaos that follows afterwards wherein each character has a double-crossing plan of their own.

The book is written in third and first person narratives. Its light on the eyes and the unwanted details are kept to the bare minimum. Yes, it does lack the element of powerful suspense, but makes up for it by keeping the story well paced and interesting. The chapters are short well placed and connected. The use of simple language aids the plot as the readers can actually focus on the story and keeps them engaged. Most of the story is on the roads, and the author successfully is able to implant the city and highway scenes in the readers mind with a use of very few words.

Captain as a central character sticks to the plot and portrays his role flawlessly. His planning, on-the-feet thinking, dark humour and his self-justified “steal to survive” ideas are depicted superbly.
The female protagonist Sylvia’s depiction as a beauty-with-brains aides to the plot and supplements it nicely. Uddham Kumar and Bipin Patel as real world rich and powerful goons play their antagonist parts well, but personally I felt could had been more villainous. Damodar Yadav, Sheena as a supportive character are used only when needed during the plot so that the story stays oncourse.

Personally, I found the ending to be a little bit of damper. But overall, the author delivers us a story which is quite light for a criminal fiction genre. Inspite of its not-so-new plot, the book successfully captures the readers interest. Its not nail-biting, but it’s something.

For Vish Dhamija’s simple yet lucid criminal fiction thriller, my overall rating would be 4/5.

I don't how many people are out who is a fan Amitabh Bachan but let's just and I practically grew up watching parwarish , deevar, coolie etc. and trust me , I can imagine this book being turned into a movie with Amitabh sir in lead during 70s and being a blockbuster . ( This coming from is a really big compliment , as l really enjoy those movies , and your book @ gave me those vibes . Congratulations sir )
Now coming back to the book , it's a story of Vagh Pratap Singh aka The Captain who is a con man doing petty jobs for various prominent people and politicians.
However the new project which he receives from Uddam Singh seems to him as means to restart his life .
The project consist stealing a famous painting and story is about how he accomplishes this task
The storyline is interesting and filled with suspense .
The narration is fast paced . The language used is simple and easy to understand . The characterisation is superb . The tittle and cover are appropriate . Overall it was a pleasure reading this book and I would it to all crime and thriller readers.

BOOK TITLE - The Heist Artist.

AUTHOR - Vish Dhamija.

FORMAT - Kindle.

LENGTH- 231 Pages.

GENRE - Thriller.

The Heist Artist focuses on the story of a slick conman Vagh Pratap Singh, famously known as the Captain. Now in his forties,he was made an offer by an amoral politician named Uddham Kumar to purloin a famous painting Poppy Flowers by Vincent Van Gogh. This painting has been missing for a very time and the Captain couldn't help but be tempted by deal. With complicated yet calculative precision and a disguise perfected to match his profile,he chalks out a plan.

Procuring the painting will not be as easy as he anticipated and Uddham was getting restless day after day. Will the Captain be able to get the job done in the agreed duration of time or will he loose his life at the hand of the politician? Now he must use his sixth sense to orchestrate a treacherously risky heist in order to get of this mess.

By the middle of the novel,we are introduced to the rest of the remaining cast of characters.Sylvia, formerly an escort now works as Uddham's advisor,Damodar who is his confidant, Hari Mohan Gupta who is the sub-inspector trying to find any concert evidence to put the Captain behind the bars for a very long time. Each of these characters do play vitals roles in the remaining part of the story.

If i had to choose my favorite character then i would definitely pick Vagh Pratap's character because as the protagonist of the novel,he was one of the most captivating character that i have came across in a while. The way he meticulously planned each step in his mind and made sure to execute the same to make this dangerous heist a success is astounding.

The Heist Artist has been one of my anticipated read for 2019. I learned a great deal about Van Gogh and the history of the painting Poppy Flowers. It is fascinating how the author fictionalized the still missing piece of art.The story was well-written and was fast paced as well.

I would highly recommend this book to all the thriller loving readers who enjoy to read about zippy road chases, charasmatic characters with snappy dialogues and an utterly compelling storyline.

The book is a nice fast paced easy read. It has all the necessary ingredients for a Heist caper kind of stories. However, I did not get wowed anywhere in the plot. Usually, when you watch such movies or read stories of heists, there is some ingenious plan or something new which captivates the audience. This element of Wow is missing in this story. None of the characters in the story left a great impact on me. May be i was expecting a Rusty or Danny from this book..

The Captain aka Vagh Pratap Singh, is a ghost. He could vanish just like that and you could never trace him. He’s a master of disguise and masters in whatever he does. One day he decides to retire but then he decides to take up Udham Kumar’s work as his final project. A project worth of many millions. A project that could settle his life throughout, lead him to lifetime imprisonment and could even end his life. Will the Captain acquire the famous stolen painting ‘The Poppy Flowers’ by Vincent Van Gogh? He has only few possible lists of names as a lead. Well, he has to steal again from that person. How is he going to do that? Does Captain have any plan? How many more are chasing the same painting? Read the book to find out who and why.
This story became fast paced towards the end. What started as a slow and dedicated search for a painting turned out to be full of action and chases. The chase definitely seemed to be of ‘Mission Impossible’ kind. The chase flip flopped at many instances, even backed off but that’s what a chase is supposed to be – full of unexpected twist at every turn. Why am I concentrating on chase sequence here in my review because it’s the one that makes the story quite interesting in the second half. You will find a map of the routes at the start of the book and it is as important as the story where maximum action happened. The Captain seemed to be the captain of this heist flick. No other character was involved as much as the Captain.

The plot revolves around the brilliance of the Captain and his plan to get hold of the painting. You might get shocked that the author didn’t maintain any big twist or secret to break the ice. He even revealed how the story would proceed at the beginning itself. But there is one big surprise, and that one holds another surprise to itself.
I felt that the other characters didn’t have much to exhibit themselves to get a place in the readers’ mind. They were set upon to take the story forward, like the police officer or Damodar. They were able to get convinced by the Captain very quickly or easily. They did not seem as tough as they should have been. The only character who matched the Captain is Sylvia and it’s because of the obvious reasons (you have to read the book to know who Sylvia is).

At the beginning, I thought that the story would be a crime thriller but on a second note, the story got better after the heist. Like Hansel and Gretel, both the protagonist and the antagonist picked up their own breadcrumbs to reach their destination. The way the police officer tracked the trails of the Captain was good and sensible. At many points, I felt the facts were logical and non-dramatic which helped to enjoy the book in a practical sense. There were no nail biting or edge-of-the-seat scenes but more of a decent rush and chase. The language was simple and consistent throughout, even at the important points.

Overall, The Heist Artist is a simple yet articulate heist story which grabs the reader along the track where we submissively attach to the chaos to enjoy the adrenaline rush induced by the author.

The Heist Artist by Vish Dhamija is the story of Vagh Pratap Singh aka Caption and Sylvia. The Caption is ready to retire when he found his last, and biggest case. How will he solve the Mystery? What happens next?

When Udham Kumar, a crooked politician commissions the Captain to track down and steal Poppy Flowers, a Vincent van Gogh's painting that has been smuggled into India after it went missing in a museum in Egypt in 2010.

It's a wonderful story with a lot of twists and turns. A fast-paced thriller with a mystery that you'll love. The narration of the story is crisp and gripping. I loved the way the author sequenced the events. The story started at a low key. It was getting tedious with the first few chapters, later the story picked up well.

I loved the last few chapters. It was a thriller ride. Though the ending then became a bit predictable. Thriller, love, mystery are some themes used by the author to make it an interesting read. The drama and dialogues which keeps the reader hooked throughout.

The language used by the author is simple and Lucid. The writing style of the author is gripping and up to the point. It's commendable.

I liked the character development done by the author. Each character had a vital role to play. I liked Sylvia's character. Strong characters again make the story more appealing. One can relate to the story from the very first page.

I liked the cover and the title of the story. The blurb seems impressive. Overall, it's a wonderful story full of action, thrill and mystery. A story with a wonderful plot, crisp narration, simple language and an Amazing writing style.

"Fear is natural. It is good. It provides positive energy to do something one fears; the trick is to not let it transform into panic."

When I finally got my copy of The Heist Artist, I jumped into it with quite a few expectations. I'm not new to Vish Dhamija's works. Having read his debut novel, Nothing Lasts Forever some years ago, I had a general idea as to what kind of a book this will be. And in any case, at least I was certain that I won't be put off by the writing style!

These were the thoughts in me when I jumped into the book. So then, it was a little disappointing to find out that the story wasn't as promising as I wanted it to be. It's not like I regret reading this book. Quite the opposite, I enjoyed it. The climax was quite unexpected to say the least, and it shocked me, too. It was a little strange though and faulty, I want to say but eh... okay. It's fiction. Everything works in fiction. Why then, did I not like it enough?

Well, for starters, and I'm giving myself the privilege of giving out a spoiler so beware!

Why I think this novel didn't work out was because it didn't have much of a plot going on for it. The backstory of each character was what kept it going. But a book can't rely on the backstory ONLY, can it? And hence it did not appeal to me as much as it should have. Perhaps, if only there was a little more to the run, it would have been a perfect 4 (maybe even 5) star.

Best selling novelist Vish Dhamja's 8th crime fiction, The Heist Artist (HarperCollins), is a modern and a sharp take on a classic robbery mystery involving a grueling match of stamina, car chases and wits.
🌠
The best part about Dhamija's work is that in all his books you never feel like that you are reading someone else's story. His captivating writing makes you feel like that you are a part of his story. It feels as if you are present there to see the whole action unfold in front of you.
🌠
Yet again, Mr. Dhamija here gives us his trademark intricate, tightly plotted, and complex crime fiction in this, the eighth of his engrossing thrillers, set amidst the heady and charming Delhi Roads.
🌠
This pulse-pounding, edge-of-your-seat thriller is about Captain Vagh Pratap Singh, the master of crime; with the whole North India hellbent on stopping him; and their crazy cat-and-mouse game that plays out from Delhi roads to Nepal.
🌠
The passing of each chapter makes you feel closer and more attached to the plot.
🌠
Each and every character is nicely created and their actions during the course of the novel feel justified and connected to reality.
🌠
The character of Captain was especially very soothing to read and it was amazing to watch him conduct his heists with a gentlemanly grace. 🌠
Overall, this book was definitely one addictive read, I gobbled it up in one heady sitting. I strongly recommend this book and the author's 7th book, The Mogul to everyone. You’ll keep turning the pages, jittery with curiosity, until you know the answer.

Book :- The heist artist

Author :- Vish Dhamija

Publisher :- HarperCollins publishers

My ratings :- ⭐⭐⭐🌠/5

I received a copy of this book through THE BOOK GENIE REVIEW PROGRAM.

Blurb :-

Vagh Pratap Singh aka the Captain is a conman extraordinaire. From transporting illegal merchandise and stealing cars to breaking safes, he's done it all. But now, in his fortieth year, he's ready to retire. So when Udham Kumar, a crooked politician from Uttar Pradesh, commissions the Captain to track down and steal Poppy Flowers, a Vincent van Gogh's painting that has been smuggled into India after it went missing in a museum in Egypt in 2010, the Captain knows that he's found his last, and biggest case. But the painting is now in possession of a dangerous gangster, and the Captain is being followed by Udham Kumar's ruthless associates, greedy for both money and power. As the odds against him begin to stack up, the Captain realizes that his last heist might not be as easy as he'd imagined.

My review :-

Being a criminal or a conman is bad. Every single one of us knows that. But why do people turn out to be criminals ?? Is it the cruel nature of the society that takes advantage of the situations and turns them into one ? Or is the need and greed of the individual itself that leads them to the path of crime ? Only the man himself knows. But are they really bad ?? What would be their perspective of the story ?? It's unknown to the world unless we make an effort to know it. I have said all of this because the book 'The heist artist' is one that is a story of conman and criminals, narrated by a lead thief himself.

The book 'The heist artist' by author Vish Dhamija is a story of a heist as it says in the title itself and cover perfectly shows what the material of robbery is. The cover is attractive and very close to the story as includes the material being robbed and the title is a perfect suit to the story. Coming to the writing style of the author, it's interesting that the narration is carried out completely in the point of view of the thief rather than the point of view of third person.

The language used is simple and easily understandable and doesn't bother you with complex vocabulary. The flow of the story is smooth and goes at a medium pace. The highlight of the story is the continuous turn of events that keep the readers hooked to the book and makes it a page turner. Also the character development and the chronology of events and the work put on at taking care of minute details and places is commendable.

There are a few drawbacks in the book. The major one is the predictability of the events. The events that take place are quite easily predictable after a few pages read. Also the story is focused too much on travel and escaping the trails and plans of travel which takes out the thrill after some time. There could have been a lot more interesting things which could have been added and made it more thrilling. The additional and too much detailing of a few elements coming in the story could also have been avoided which could have made it much more interesting read.

Overall it's an amazing and thrilling story of a robbery and escape after it. If you are a fan of thriller and enjoy adventurous books, this is a must for you.

Boy! Boy! Boy! I did read one of Vish Dhamija's books earlier, but I didn't expect to do so with a similar intensity again. But he did it, again! And I can't be happier to having read a book.

Now, I must admit that unlike a thriller, my review gave away all my cards in the beginning. But I didn't intend to create the suspense either. Also, I think you'll want to know the same in more detail, so let me start.

There is this painting 'Poppy Flowers' by Van Gogh which has been stolen twice. Last it was stolen in 2010 and hasn't been seen since. So, the whole story of this book is built around a deal which requires the acquisition of this very painting. I just loved the fact that instead of using a fictitious name of the painter, a fact was used. This made the book all the more interesting.

Initially, this book contained very normal scenes, which built up a premise for the rest of the book. And I won't say that this part of the book which was supposed to be not-so-thrilling or mundane was merely that. For some inexplicable reason, I did enjoy that part as much as the latter part.

Then the thrill started building up, and the lives of characters were at stake. And I cared about them. I felt they were real. I felt sad when the book was over and I'd to part ways with those characters.

There was a point when I felt that the heist is becoming a little boring. But I assure you if you ever feel so in the book, the point will be what it is: a mere point, and won't elongate. And so the story accelerated after that point and led to an ending which was quite satisfactory.

I think I've said enough to assure you that it is a well- written, very much readable thriller. I hope it doesn't disappointed you, and impresses you just as much as it did to me.

Name of the book - The Heist Artist by Vish Dhamija
Stars given - Something that rhymes with beehive. That's 5 on 5.
My take on the book-
Do you like thrillers?
Do you like smart protagonists who make you like even after they are doing not so honest dealings?
Do you like it when an author takes not only the protagonist but also the reader on a roller-coaster ride?
If you said yes to all the above then you should definitely give this book a try. Actually I would suggest get it, pronto. This is the first book I am reading by the author and boy oh boy am I thankful to @writersmelon for this one.
Ps another reason for me liking this book as much as I did was cause the nickname the protagonist has. It's Captain and for those of you who don't know this my Dad's nickname is Captain but that's where their similarities end. Thank the lord!
So back to the book the author will make you run, hop, jump and what not throughout the book but guess what even with your lungs screaming out for help and your legs loaded up with lactic acid you will still wanna ask the author how fast to run or how many times to hop or how high to jump. Don't believe me? Try it out for yourself.
Note - Turns out the painting Poppy Flowers by Vincent van Gogh really did get stolen twice and it's current location is unknown.

The Heist Artist is a thrilling book. Once it crosses the point where Captain finds the painting, it becomes one fast ride. The research, the writing add value to the book and make for a lively read. The car chases, the hide and seek... all of it is one giant adrenaline rush. Excellent work, as usual, from Vish Dhamija. I enjoyed this one for it kept me guessing at times. If I had to point out one thing as a negative, then it would definitely be the ending. After all that thrill, the ending was a bit lacklustre. As is real life. Therefore, that tiny let down can be excused.
I have to add I would give a four-star rating for this book, but since it was too irritating stumbling upon error after error, I take away one star.

Ive been a fan of heist stories because of movies like the Ocean's series, Fast and Furious and our desi Dhoom series. That is why I picked this book up and I must say it did not disappoint. The plot is fast paced and full of twists. Even though some of the twists are predictable, the tight storyline and crisp narration make up for it. It was interesting to read about the lost painting and I liked how the author has incorporated it into the story. Overall an nice thriller/ mystery to read. I would recommend this unputdownable book to all the lovers of thrillers/ mystery/ heist dramas.

The cover and title of the book is apt for the story and totally goes with the plot. The blurb of the story is impressive and you want to read the book instantly. The book is one of those books which keeps you hooked till the end. There are lots of twists and turns which make you more and more engrossed with every page. I personally finished this book in one go and I absolutely loved it. I wanted to read a book about con artist from long time and this book was like wish come true. It won’t disappoint you. Language used is very easy and simple. Character are very well created and developed. The book feels more like a movie and you will feel the story replaying in your head. The Heist Artist by Vish Dhamija is the the story of extraordinary conman Vagh Pratap Singh who has spend and upholded his whole around thefts and smuggling illegal merchandise. In his 40s when he was ready to retire decides to accept one last offer.
The offer was the worth millions painting of Van Gogh. But this wasn't that easy what he thought it to be.

Talking about the cover of the book. It totally justifies the content.

Narration and Characterisation- Narration of this book will keep you hooked till the end. It's is lucid with easy language. The character of Vagh Pratap is brilliantly portrayed and other characters are well developed too.

The climax was quite predictable at some degree. While reading I found few events were easily predictable. There were even too much detailing and stretching of certain elements of the book.

Overall it was a great read with adequate amount of thrillers.

I received this book as part of The Book
Genie
Review Program.

I've been meaning to read this book since I first came across it on bookstagram simply because the title intrigued me. The blurb made my expectations sky rocket and fortunately, it didn't disappoint.

Vagh pratap singh aka The captain is a a con man who has sustained his life doing thefts and smugling, now in his forties, he's given a proposal to steal a Van Gogh masterpiece which is already missing, by a politician. The deal is tempting but the risk is higher than ever before. With the police already hot on his trail, the captain must execute the plan with precision as there's no room for any mistakes.

With the restless politician nagging and the police who's behind him like a hungry predator, the question is would he able to perform the greatest and probably the most dangerous heist of his life?

First of all, I'd love to comment on the fact that the object in question, the thing that can make or break the deal, The Van gogh painting is indeed missing in reality. I love that the plot was based on something that's actually true. Since I'm a lover of art and just a naturally curious person, I absolutely loved the trivia's the author provided us with even though I already knew some of them.

I also enjoyed all the pop culture refrences as they didn't feel out of place but actually complimented the theme. The godfather one for example.

The plot of the story is simple yet complicated as you don't know what to expect. It's unpredictable and enthralling. The chase, the tension, the planning everything was narrated so exceptionally that I couldn't help but get immersed in the story.

Vagh's character is my favorite. We're given an insight in his past life which made him look more than just a con doing his job. It made his character more three dimensional. I also love the way he's so calculative and brilliant at everything he does, the first car chase for example, His predictions and deductions and his observant nature makes him just the perfect protagonist and narrator.

The writing style is simple and yet captivating. It's the reason why I was on edge the whole time I was reading it.

The suspense build up was amazing and it made me anticipate more of what's gonna happen next.

The climax was underwhelming to say the least. All the build up falls a little flat as we approach the climax as it becomes predictable and you can feel yourself loosing interest because at this point you know whats gonna happen and hence every word feels stretched.

Although I love the writing style, I felt there were too many descriptions of things that didn't matter which was distracting.

The storyline is great but the authors ability to keep you hooded falters time and again because of irrelevant descriptions.

All and all, it's a great thriller and it's enjoyable but it could've been better if it wasn't for the too long descriptions and the poorly delivered climax.

When I got this book in my hands, never expected it would bring all the thrill and allure of an action-packed show. For me, reading this novel was like watching a heist cum road movie.

Vagh Pratap Singh A.K.A Captain, the protagonist, engages in a heist of Vincent Van Gogh’s famous painting “Poppy Flowers”. The whole book is an adventuresome account of this theft. The author has meticulously written every detail, which would make the reader engrossed in the book until the end. I have often seen in books portrays a protagonist as an epitome of virtue but unlike the rest, Captain who is an infamous thief with some moral values. Whatsoever, the story inclines more to reality than fiction.

It’s apparent that the author has done exceptional research before writing this book. Because I felt Dhamija constantly was trying to make the novel sounds realistic with having no loose ends. Throughout the book, every reader could experience the brilliance of his writing and the plot. I am someone from down south who has no familiarity with the road route of North India; even then I enjoyed the account of the protagonist expedition. A tinge of anticipation lurks in every sentence, which points the upcoming twists. Hence the book has the potential of keeping the readers on their toes while reading.

The plot development and character building are excellent. I feel the best part of this book is its story execution, as a well-planned heist. The story veers through unexpected tracks. Oh boy! I would not stop praising the author’s imagination. I was just flabbergasted.

The character building of the main protagonist and the other relevant characters is in the right proportion without overdoing it. Especially the protagonist’s life events have revealed through different chapters rather than telling it in one go.

So with the writing style, it’s lucid yet sophisticated. I got learning many new words from the book, indeed a brownie point to the readers. The book has been written in the first-person and third-person perspective.

Towards the middle, the story seems to lag and would bore the reader for a while. One reason for the lag is, the author gives away rather unnecessary information on ammunition. And the other, the book has more descriptions than dialogues. As a reader, I would like to read a story through the characters conversations. I felt the story could have been better if it avoided those lags.

The biggest disappointment, as far as I am concerned, was the editing of the book. I have spotted serious editing mistakes, which in turn dwindled my enthusiasm. I think these mistakes could not be overlooked because it would affect the book severely.

The quintessential part of the book is, of course, Vincent Van Gogh’s “Poppy Flowers” which was stolen from Egypt Museum in 2010. I was unaware of this before. Hats-off to the author who fictionalises this real incident in his book, which is splendid. I would recommend this book to those who like to read the action-thriller genre.

The attractive green-hued cover page with the painting frame and a man running in the tunnel can grab the attention of readers. Having been read most of the previous books of Vish Dhamija, I was sure that this book is going to be a masterpiece like the painting of poppy flowers by Vincent Van Gogh. Doesn’t the title sound intrigue?

However, things have been changed now and he is in his forties, hence, he wants to do something which can secure his future. During this, he got a proposal from Uddham Kumar, a crooked politician of Uttar Pradesh. As per the proposal, he has to discover and steal the famous painting of Poppy Flowers by Vincent Van Gogh. He assured to give him a huge amount for this work.

Captain knows that if he succeeds then this is going to be his last biggest case but he also knows the danger which lures ahead of him.

The painting, Poppy Flowers has been stolen from Cairo’s Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum and it is rumored that it is in India. But, no one knows who owns it now; hence this is quite a challenging task for Captain.

Captain has created an excellent ploy, but he is always in the watch of Uddham Kumar’s men. Slowly and steadily, we meet Sylvia, a charismatic lady who advises Uddham and plays a major part in the book.

In between, Inspector Hari Mohan wants to catch the captain.

Will Captain be able to find the painting? If yes, then how? What will happen once he gets his hand on the painting? Will this heist be easy for the conman like Captain? Read this super-fast book to know more.

Writing style:

The language of this book is seamless, which will hooks till the last page. The narration is amazing and the author has avoided jargons and complex sentences keeping the book simple for all kind of readers.

My perception:

This book was enthralling to read and I finished this book in two sittings. Each book of the author’s sets in a different location and I really find it amusing how every time, the author manages it. The character of Captain is really amazing and the way the author has sketched him is the plus point of the book. Missing dots of a stolen painting and writing a fictional story around is a commendable task. Each page of the book is filled with action, thriller, and suspense, where no one trusts anyone but still they have to go on for the sake of money. The characters of Uddham Kumar and Bipin Patel are brilliantly drawn by the author. This book also reminds me of the author’s previous work ‘Nothing lasts forever’ where the readers don’t understand the con until the last page. Captain’s wiser tactics and spontaneous decisions are the charms of this book.

Filled with action, thriller and suspense, this book is perfect for a weekend read.

Vish Dhamija is my favourite author. His books are always filled with the finest details, embedded perfectly with right words, correctly planned plot. ‘THE HEIST ARTIST’ is an unusual creation of Vish Sir. Like his previous master pieces this one is not about the court room dramas or twist & turns of legal process and proceedings. ‘THE HEIST ARTIST’ is a finely blended story of a Master Conman of the country, a Shrewd Politician and a Ruthless Gangster.

The protagonist Vagh Pratap Singh aka ‘Captain’ is a Master Conman who wants to finish one last job A Last Heist before he retires is hired by a shrewd and greedy politician Udham Kumar to search and steal the Original world famous painting “Poppy Flower” by the famous Vincent Van Gogh. Well the painting is estimated for over 200 million dollars and is missing from over a decade from a museum in Egypt and now its believed to be in India, soon the protagonist ‘Captain’ finds that unfortunately its in the possession of the very ruthless and dangerous gangster Bipin Patel. Also his past deeds have come back and an honest police officer HariMohan who's already chasing him(Captain’s) and is back after his flesh & blood. HariMohan wants to handcuff the Captain and bring him to justice.
The book ‘The Heist Artist’ starts with a Map on the very first page, Readers Please make sure you have good look at it first. You will really thank me for this tip.
As the story goes by the reader will really enjoy the hurricane of fortunate and unfortunate events that passes by the protagonist to complete his last contract ‘The Heist’ which will be his last if he stays alive or ....
The whole story made me re’live the Thrill which I had in watching the movies, ‘The Great Train Robbery’, ‘The Italian Job’- both Old & New, ‘The Oceans’ series, Tower Heist, ‘The Inside Man’ etc. I was anxious to complete the book as soon as I could, The moment I started it, I was not able to keep it unless I was completely done with it. Many scenes were so catchy that for hours together I sat on edge of my recliner. Back to the book...
Will the Captain be able to reach the painting ?
Can he steal the painting from the gangster’s den ?
Can he plan the successful heist ?
And most important what will happen to him after the Heist if he succeeds in completing it?

A Brilliant Piece Crime,Thriller and Suspense, A Master piece of Hand Woven Art of Words, An Extra Ordinary script with perfect justification to all the Characters. All together Once More A Phenomenal, Fantabulous and Remarkable Book from Vish Dhamija. Must Must Must Read Suggested....
HAPPY READING :)

My Views - The book is about stealing a famous painting 'Poppy Flowers' by vincent van gogh. Now the painting has really been stolen many times and is still missing.I love how the author has used real information instead of using some fake name. The story is medium-paced but keep the tension as it is.The narration and the characterization is good.I really like captain's character and the skill-set he possessed. He is master of disguise and a perfect plan maker. But he is not a cold-blooded killer.Other characters like Sylvia,an ex-escort now works as Udham's advisor,Damodar-Udham's right hand man,Hari Mohan Gupta- an honest SI ,these characters also played vital role to complete the story. The language is simple and you will not feel bored as the thrill is continued till last. Overall a thrilling read. Recommended.

A life fraught with risks yet rewarding, is what Vagh Pratap Singh aka The Captain, is leading. A conman to the world, the protagonist of ‘The Heist Artist’ is a man of multiple talents endowed with both intelligence and acumen required to outwit his opponents. A master disguiser, he takes his job seriously and thus plans meticulously before executing the work he is commissioned for. Now in the fortieth year of his life, he looks forward to taking retirement but not before making sufficient money to enable him sail through rest of his life smoothly. That’s when he strikes the jackpot….or is it just another dream, a dream that may never see the light of day?…..’The Heist Artist’ has the answers.

Slow at first, the book picks up pace somewhere near the middle and then races on at breakneck speed only to stop to deliver a climax that will leave the reader whistling with amazement. One of the highlights of a good thriller is the ability of the author to dish out a phenomenal climax, one that his/ her readers don’t see coming. On this point Vish Dhamija scores a perfect five.

The plot is interesting and intriguing and has plenty of cat and mouse game going on that helps to keep the reader on the edge. The twists, the turns and the hurdles in between don’t allow you to keep it down. Characters are well articulated and play their role to perfection in taking the story forward.

A tinge of romance, plenty of action and adequate measure of suspense is how I’ll sum up Vish Dhamija’s ‘The Heist Artist’.

While the plot was excellent, characterization good and pace okay, the area of editing calls for a relook. I’m sure that a fresh round of editing will take care of the minor glitches that come to light at places like an irregular pace and repetition of sentences and paragraphs here and there, which in fact could be the result of faulty proofreading at the printing stage.

Overall an easy read, one that you can take up on a lazy afternoon to reinvigorate you this one scores a three on a scale of five.

Vagh Pratap Singh aka Captain is a wanted conman who has mastered the art of disguise. Delhi police has caught him multiple times but he always gets released due to lack of evidence. When a corrupt politician Udhham Kumar learns about Captain, he decides to put him on the job of stealing a renowned Vincent van Gogh painting called Poppy Flowers. He is going to sell it for 200 million dollars and pay Captain 10 million. It is going to be the biggest heist Captain has ever attempted and if he pulls it off then he can spend the rest of his life enjoying his wealth. But Captain does not know that Uddham Kumar is not a man to be trusted. He has something dreadful planned for Captain once he gets hold of the painting. But the story won’t stop there. Captain is not a fool who can be tricked. He has always been two steps ahead of Udhham Kumar. Will the heist be successful? Will Captain be able to steal the painting? Grab the book to find out.

It is a fast paced thriller and can be finished off in a single sitting. The plot is intriguing and keeps you hooked till the end. There are lots of twists which are going to amaze you. As the story unfolds the revelations will leave you stunned. The characters are well casted and the language used is easy and understandable. There is an essence of art and history in the story which is really appreciable. I loved Captain’s character which is so well written. He is witty, clever and hard to catch. If you are a sucker for thrillers then this book is definitely going to be an enjoyable read. Once you pick up the book you won’t be able to put it down unless and until you know how it is going to end. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone out there. Vish Dhamija has done it yet again with a different style this time. While Vish never fails to amaze readers, his writing style makes a reviewer like me forget that I am into the process of critical reading. He played the role of a ‘heist artist’ himself when it came to stealing the reader’s reality & heart and make them get lost into this story. ‘The Heist Artist’ for me was more like a duck swimming in the water - so calm and subtle on the top but paddling hard underneath. The writing style of the book is so effortless and subtle and yet, there is so much going on in the story inside.
It is about a con man who is the best in his market and now, he stands in front of his last project which in return pays him well enough for him to live his life happily ever after. Despite being the best, the heist artist faces issues he never thought he would face and gets into situations that he has never been in before. The story takes twists and turns as the story moves ahead of how the artist completed his last piece of art.
The title clearly goes with the book.
The language, as mentioned above, is subtle, smooth and relevant to the crime fiction genre. Though yes, there are a few words here and there which may be tough fort the beginners in the reading world.
The structure and layout is very simple and anybody can easily understand it. No complications at all when comes to reading the book.
Coming to the content, the best things about the book were two things -
It is not male-centric. This is something that we see rarely in this genre.
Despite being so smooth, it does give you a punch in the end.
In the end, giving my personal opinion, I loved the book. I finished it in one go not because it is short book but because it kept me well-hooked. I enjoyed the suspense element and didn’t get confused even if so much was going on. So ye, I do highly recommend it to anyone who wants to read the crime fiction or thriller genre.

It had all the elements of Vish Damijha's work. The suspense built up in each chapter, attention to detail and the unexpected twist in the end were all there. Only thing missing was the courtroom drama that I have come to expect in every Vish Damijha book. But it was a fantastic read nonetheless.
The story line is interesting and the narrative was simple and easy to follow. I could visualize the author's thoughts while reading it. There were punches at the right places to make the book all the more entertaining. The chase was thrilling to read. Of course it could be made into a movie as well.
Vagh Pratap Singh aka Captain is a conman who is in the hiding after having smuggled some weapons. A heist project comes his way and he dons the role of an art professor in Delhi for it. Uddham Kumar, a politician/goon wants the very famous Poppy Flowers painting by Vincent Van Gogh which is rumoured to be in India. So he hires the Captain to find the painting and to steal it. He appoints Sylvia, who does detective work for him to monitor the Captain. Uddham does not trust the Captain and wants to kill him once he acquires the painting. So he sends one of his men Damodar along with Sylvia to accompany the Captain on the heist.
Once the Captain acquires the painting, does he escape from Uddham and his goons and other search parties who wants to have the 200 hundred million dollar painting is very thrilling to read. It gives adrenaline rush to follow the theft and the chase after.
I highly recommend it if you like reading crime fiction. It is riveting and makes you want to finish it to know the ending. I got the feels of reading false impressions and honor among thieves by Jeffrey Archer. Thank you Writers melon and Vish Damijha for the complimentary copy of the book. It was a Solid 5 stars read for me.

💚The Heist Artist By Vish Dhamija💚
💚Genre: Thriller, mystery
💚Publisher: Harper Collins
.
Plot: Vagh Pratap Singh aka the Captain is a conman extraordinaire. From transporting illegal merchandise and stealing cars to breaking safes, he's done it all. When Udham Kumar, a crooked politician from Uttar Pradesh, commissions the Captain to track down and steal Poppy Flowers, a Vincent van Gogh's painting that has been smuggled into India after it went missing in a museum in Egypt in 2010, the Captain knows that he's found his last, and biggest case. .
My Opinion: Excitement doubles when it comes to Vish Dhamija's book. He has always provided the best out of best, I was so excited to read his recent work. The book follows the story which is quite different & unique. The book is marvellous amalgamation of thrill, mystery, emotions, smuggling, chasing, etc. After completing it I was flabbergasted by the narration, the storyline and ups & downs created by the author. The book was really well nurtured with different thoughts & concepts along with vivid descriptions & author's imagination has no limits altogether. He plays with characters in the book but indirectly he is playing with the readers. The title is apt also the cover is well designed.
.
Pros: Firstly, thrillers are my cup of tea & I throughly enjoyed it. It's a short book but has alot of potentials & the narration is on point. If you pick it up, there is no chance of getting bored or keeping it down. Characters were well developed & the book felt like a movie & the conversations were live. The language is easy with twisty words just to give a thriller touch to the book. I do recommend it.
Cons: At a few, events I felt like extra efforts made it look exaggerated. But it's a mind blowing read.

Vish Dhamija's latest novel, The Heist Artist is a nail-biting thriller. It has all the elements which will keep the readers glued to the book.
The plot revolves around the quest to trace down a Vincent van Gogh painting, Poppy Flowers that has been smuggled into India after it went missing from a museum in Egypt. Although the protagonist of this novel, Vagh Pratap Singh, who is also known as the Captain, has certain antagonistic characteristics, one cannot help but sympathise and support him. The Captain is a conman, who is an expert in transporting illegal merchandise, stealing cars, breaking safes and what not! A shrewd politician, Udhham Kumar has his eyes on the painting and has made a deal with a Japanese businessman and art connoisseur to sell the prized painting. To accomplish his plan, he hires the Captain to track down and steal the famous painting.
Will the Captain be able to track the painting? How will he be able to succeed?
You have to read the book to know more!

It was absolutely unpredictable. The language is lucid. The author has beautifully spun the plot. The suspense was kept alive throughout the book, almost until the end of the story. All the characters were well developed. Overall, it is one of the best crime thrillers that I have read in recent times.

The Heist artist is an unputdownable read. It is package of twists and turns. Basically, the whole story revolves around stealing a famous painting which is already smuggled.

Name- The Heist Artist
Written By- Vish Dhamija
Published by- HarperCollins
Pages- 262
Genre- Fiction (Crime)
My Thoughts-
Ever found yourself rooting for the bad guy? Then you should probably start with this book.
An Art heist, a master conman, a world famous painting and voila we have a perfect recipe for cooking a brilliant plot.
While other authors choose to invent a fictional crime, Dhamija always prefers to give his fictions a touch of realism.
That could very well be the reason of his success.
For The Heist Artist, Dhamija chose the renowned painter Vincent van Gogh's famous painting Poppy Flowers. Poppy Flowers is indeed a real piece by the famous painter which has a history of being stolen several times.
This book is based on the idea that the painting is lost somewhere in India and is probably owned by one of the wealthiest people of our country. A crooked politician Udhham Kumar hires Vagh Pratap Singh AKA Captain to steal the painting from it's owner and hand it over to him so that he can sell it to a wealthy Japanese businessman for 200 million USD.
The heist results in a disaster which was much expected.
Each party had their own agenda and a common target 'Poppy flowers'.
The book though interesting had some low points. There was a lack of adrenaline rush at some places while some lacked lustre.
I personally felt the ending was a bit rushed and could have been done differently.
Other than these it was an enjoyable read.

The story begins with a description of Vagh Pratap Singh, aka “Captain”, a con artist wanted by the police.
The Captain has been assigned to pull off a major heist, one that if successful, will give him enough money for the rest of his life. He has been asked to steal an already stolen painting, ‘Poppy Flowers’, painted by none other than Van Gogh! This job is given to the Captain by an unscrupulous politician Udhham Kumar.
The Captain takes on the identity of an art professor in order to trace the painting. As Udhham Kumar does not trust the Captain completely, he assigns the beautiful Sylvia to keep tabs on him.
Once the painting is located, the Captain plans a daring heist to steal the painting and bring it to Udhham Kumar. Sylvia and Damodar, Udhham Kumar’s man, are sent to assist the Captain in bringing the painting in safely.
However, each individual in the story has their own agenda. So begins a thrilling journey of car chases, double crosses and betrayal. To complicate the situation further, an upright policeman Hari Mohan Gupta, who is determined to arrest the Captain and bring him to justice, is also hot on the Captain’s trail.
Will the Captain get away with the robbery or will he end up arrested or dead? The reader needs to read the story to find that out.
I recommend this book to readers as an engrossing and interesting thriller that will leave the reader hooked until the end.
