Return on Courage: A Business Playbook for Courageous Change

Rate this book
Learn to Lead with Courage
Ryan Berman has spent the last two years studying the most courageous people and leaders on the planet. So what do an astronaut, a Navy SEAL, the cofounder of Method, the former VP of communications at Apple, and the president of Domino’s all have in common? They have each liberated themselves or their companies from what they once were to master truly courageous feats in life and business.
Fifty-two percent of Fortune 500 companies from the year 2000 are now extinct, and 80 percent of all start-ups will fail within their first 18 months. Yet there's a lack of urgency across the board in most organizations to address this callous reality.
Return on Courage (ROC) is your go-to courage instructional manual that helps you attack and shrink business fears head-on. Learn how to relentlessly play offense, drive change, and transform into a Courage Brand®.
ROC can be your secret weapon to maximizing your ROI. Any business, being, or brand can return on the courage platform. Return on Courage shows you how.

I'm currently working at a brand that has decided to partner with the author, Ryan Berman, to help us become a courageous brand - and I thought, I should probably read the book in order to really get into this program.

This book is really directed to business owners, and business people - and I think it has some great content to help bring some good thinking to the forefront as creative business solves.

The amount of research and content that Ryan had to complete for this book must have been a massive undertaking - and the tidbits of knowledge/quotes that he applies to his playbook are great and really bring the idea to life.

I highlighted a bunch in here, and took what I could as a brand creative. Really liked the entire "'Believership' not Leadership" thoughts of the courageous process - and think it is really good info and process that can help any individual in a team.

Overall, good read, especially to a corporation or company looking to flip some tables and scream "ITS NOT ENOUGH! LETS CHANGE!" The book is an actual playbook with workbook sections to help shape a plan and put it to action.

Pointless

I came into the book ready and open for a genuine conversation on real courage for natural leaders, with real world examples that enlist management and those who actually do the work of a modern corporation.

This book is not that. The first warning sign comes in the introduction and the introduction to the introduction. The author is strictly marketing himself. No strike that. He is selling himself like a faded Buick to convince you it’s a classic.

The rest of the book is tragic. We’re given a definition of courage that can be summed up as, executives doing the base minimum definition of their job: gather data, analyze, course correct for your environment. That’s management 101 for anyone who came into university with not even a summer job.

If that’s a news flash then you probably never actually learned your trade. Or what management actually is.

Worse, the author manages to demean both customers and his workforce as working against you the poor well meaning executive. But should you learn from the market and your subordinates who do the actual work, well it’s you who deserves a gold star.

The guy is selling himself and feel-good seminars for mediocre management. Move on if you genuinely understand real courage and have the spine / vision to gather real supporting case studies.

This book shows you the value of Courage. Whether it's outside the office or inside. Whenever you make a decision you are using both knowledge and courage. All the examples in this book show that without courage your personality is wishy-washy.

You have to have courage to lead and that is a fact that this book illustrates over and over. Without courage mankind would cease to grow. Our world would not have the brave and wonderful people in it. We tend to show our courage when we are forced into an uncomfortable position where we have to make a decision.

Many who have gone before us have had the courage to lead us in new directions and to stretch our boundaries past what we knew were the limits. In this book, you meet many exciting personalities that have done just that and have changed our world. They have shown their courage at a crucial time when they had to step up and make their decisions.

You can not lead without having the courage to do good or fail, and still, be standing afterward and be able to defend your decisions. Great leaders know this whether it's instinct or learned behavior we must use whats inside of us to push us to the greatness we deserve and earn through courage.

I won this book from a giveaway! I'm pursuing a business-related degree, which is one reason why this appealed to me. But I have to say that I think I learned more about the business world from reading this book than from any of my classes in this field. Mostly because I haven't been paying the most attention at school. This book has done a much better job capturing my attention.

I get a bit bored on certain areas because it's a bit repetitive, but it really does reiterate and expand upon the main points given toward being a courageous person. This is one of the better self-help books I've ever read since it provides a new perspective and isn't flowery. I think that I will come back and re-read it after I graduate and enter the workforce.

The clearest and most easily understood explanation of how courage can become the major component in business. As Ryan Berman describes the Return on Courage (ROC), he illustrates how it also increases the Return on Investment (ROI). This simply written book can make a drastic improvement in any endeavor - whether it is personal, small business, not-for-profit, religious, SMB, or major corporation. As a Project Manager (BSPM), I am going to apply this new understanding to my personal life first, and then implement courage into my project management initiatives as needed. I read many books, but this one has really excited me and I cannot wait to begin seeing what courage will do for me.

I received this book through a Goodreads Giveaway. I enjoyed the concept and it had a lot of stories and actionable items at the end of each chapter to help drive the points home.

If courage is the accelerator , then risk is the brake pedal - this is a great metaphor and this is what the book is about. It is full of business examples and experiences shared. I think the book is a very good motivation for anyone from a corporate environment to a start up world. Indeed it is important to have more courage to build your own business, to establish and grow a brand or to recover an existing and running business from a down time. I like this quote: " Courage is for your direct manager who may be suffering from symptoms of indecisiveness. " You are your own manager and internal courage is your personal coach, mentor, motivator and manager. I would recommend this book for anyone looking for motivation to get back on track or to start own journey in the world of business.
