UPDATE (2020.12.10) : It's official. This is getting a TV adaptation too. Hopefully a channel like Tencent will pick it up considering how they've ramped up their game in the mystery genre (*cough cough* Light On Series). No news on the cast yet but this might take time to start as there are two of her novels already being adapted.

A fitting ending for a suspenseful novel. A part of me was let down as it ended on a note like a Michael Bay action movie but I wasn't fully deterred by it. We were given the hints of the "bad guy" fairly quickly thus by the end it was mostly as how the "good guys" are gonna survive and come out the winners. One factor that made me sad was the unnecessary death of a certain member of the team. Although he was not considered as the most important or a main character, I felt quite sad. Realistically situation like the one in the novel could not end with everyone surviving but still this did this saddened me.

As I have mentioned in the reviews of the previous two novels, this books should not be read for its romance but rather for the mystery/crime element. Praise should be given duly to the author for building the plot in a manner that keeps the suspense constant through out the story. Priest has done a wonderful job in the world-building and the development of the characters. It is no deception that she really has researched a lot for this novel.

I can easily say that Priest has become one of the authors that I'll be keeping my eye out for. Although I have watched few episodes of The Guardian I had never given the novel a chance so I think I will next. Happy Reading!

If you liked this book, then you'll probably like: Guardian: Zhen Hun, Vol. 1 by the same author, and SCI Special Crime Investigation (Season 1)

Summary
The SID team is called to work on a new case in which a high profile business tycoon dies in a routine traffic accident, sending ripples in the stock market at home and abroad. Soon, Luo Wenzhou and his teammates notice that the case isn't open and shut as previously thought. Instead, the team uncovers a complicated story of family drama centered on inheritance, as well as a slew of not-so accidental fatal car crashes related to the family.

Review
This third book (and arc) is inspired by Macbeth, and the events that unfold recall the family drama and power-grabbing in the play. Fei Du frequently quotes Macbeth, which is a nice treat for fans of the play like myself.

Zhou Junmai, a business tycoon who made his fortune abroad, is the primary victim in this new case. Zhou Junmai's youngest son decides to call the police for a thorough investigation into his father's death, believing that the car crash that killed him was no accident. Meanwhile, the eldest son rushes back home upon hearing the news and finds himself kidnapped by a shadowy group who wishes to reveal the truth about Zhou Junmai's business and family. In fact, the president's closest aid is suspected of being his illegitimate son, which then puts into question the inheritance and the future of the Zhou enterprise.

This case isn't as gripping as the Lolita arc in vol. 2, but the focus is much more on Luo Wenzhou/Fei Du's relationship. This arc reveals a lot about Fei Du's difficult past and his abusive father, as well as his present-day mission of revenge. Luo Wenzhou becomes especially close to Fei Du and the two finally put aside their differences and work in tandem. Fei Du joins the bureau officially as a psychology student and works under Wenzhou's guidance, and the pair, along with Tao Ran and the rest of the team, tackle the Zhou case head-on.

Fei Du seemed to have grown up in a different place, where good was truly good and the bad was truly bad; the rules of this place were entirely different from those of the real world. As clever as Fei Du was, he must be well aware of how he didn't fit in, so he carefully wore a human skin, restricting himself to a circle, imitating Tao Ran, imitating Zhang Donglai (...) Only in front of Luo Wenzhou (...) had he given up the act...

The Lolita arc was riveting and I maintain that it is one my my favourite crime stories to this date. By comparison, the Macbeth arc is politically-driven and less action-packed, but the family drama is well developed and there are many twists and turns you don't expect. The three books so far are connected by a larger overarching plot connected to a mysterious radio station that plays audiobooks of lesser known literature. While that plot hasn't been uncovered yet, you can see how the three major cases so far are somehow related to this nefarious organization.

Onto book #4!

The final arc of Mo Du didn't disappoint! I'm not sure if I fully followed along with everything since there was so much going on, including a lot of references to the previous cases or things that happened in the past and were only briefly mentioned, but I thoroughly enjoyed the ride.

**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**

Luo Wenzhou and Fei Du's relationship takes a backseat to the conclusion of the story. All of my built up questions from the first two books were resolved. Most importantly, I've been dying to know who the Reciter is. Turns out it's not just one person but a whole network comprised of individuals related to victims of unsolved crimes, not unsimilar to Fei Du's own network of spies and helpers. They're lead by the previous lead of the Picture Album Project, Fan Siyuan, who is marked as dead on paper but is still alive. He's continuing on with his revenge against the evil criminal mastermind organization, who as we learn is actually headed by *gasp* the Criminal Bureau's director and his older brother. I knew there was a mole among the police but didn't realize it would be at such a high level.

Pretty much a lot of stuff goes down, Fei Du almost gets himself killed when he puts himself into a situation where the Reciter can and does easily kidnap him, which consequently almost gives Luo Wenzhou a heart attack. But all's well that ends well :)

This is definitely my favorite Priest novel to date. I'm going to try another book by her next, since why not, so let's see how that holds up.

the macbeth inspired plot ‼️ the subtle romance of zhoudu ‼️ pure masterpiece. priest really surprises me because each time i think “how will she orchestrate this novel” and then she does it so detailed and engrossingly , i adore it !!

I gave this book 4 stars and not 5 because it did feel like it dragged on and just never ended, I feel this novel was a lot more condensed than the others and we got more personal with the main characters so that’s the reason for the above . i enjoyed the insight into their lives though and their subtle romance blossoming makes my heart twirl even though it’s the epitome of slow burn !!

I think volume 3 was my favourite one so far. Not only for the plot, but wahh, we find out so much about Fei Du in this one and I absolutely love it, even if he seems to be deep in some shady stuff… well, even more than before, I suppose. I’m still waiting to find out more about his father though, as I am 100% sure he’s important in the great scheme of things… and that he’s a dick. Priest, queen, I kowtow to you, how do you keep writing so many diverse characters in absolutely captivating plots, I will never know

The best arc so far. Ngl.

It's book three, so of course, it was easier to understand too. A lot of details missed in book one and two are finally coming to light (yay). This arc are even more connected to the main characters compared to the first two. This arc is super great. The characters are turned out very dimensional. The series of events was out of ordinary and unexpected. The plot are well-knitted and the emotional aspects are good, too.

What is better is Fei Du and Luo Wenzhou development. Both their characters and their relationship. We finally see Fei Du's back story, Fei Du's real personality, and heart-wrenching method of Fei Du's coping mechanism. We also finally meet more details about both Fei Du's and Luo Wenzhou's family. Fuck God, now i could emphatize with them easily.

Besides, once again, the fact that this arc is more connected to the main charas making me realize things ive missed out in book one and three. And the details are more shocking than i expected.

Anyway, with all of these informations gathered from one to three, i cant wait to grab my hands to the book four.

Really, a straight up 5/5 series.
