Death Down Under takes Raja and Vinny to the land called Oz to investigate the unusual death of a grad student doing an ecological study in one of Australia’s famed eucalyptus forests. Raja’s intuitive powers and Vinny’s computer wizardry are once again tested as they hunt for her killer.
With help from a reluctant Queensland police inspector, an experienced outback guide, and the indigenous aborigines of northern Australia, Raja and Vinny track suspects into the desert of central Australia and the rainforests of the Northern Territory where the natural dangers they face are only exceeded by the greedy men who are determined to stop them. Murder is never simple.
Death Down Under is another rollicking adventure with the colorful characters and dialogue, the unexpected twists and turns, and the gripping suspense and thrills that Raja fans have come to expect. The seventh book in the Raja Williams mystery thriller series, it can also be read stand alone.
Jack Thompson is an international bestselling author finding voices in many genres. In addition to his popular Raja Williams mystery series, Jack writes science fiction, political thrillers, paranormal romance, children's stories and fairy tales.
According to Jack, whether reading or writing, what makes a story great is how well it communicates to the reader. Whether presenting him with a hero he wishes he could be or a villain he chooses to hate, the characters must relate to the reader on a personal level. A reader will leave a good story in an improved condition. He may have learned something new about the world or himself, or simply been well entertained. That's why Jack writes.
In the small city of Mount Isa, in inland Australia, Detective Inspector Stephen Polwart’s fishing trip is interrupted. A young woman has been found dead in a camp tent, in the north forest, apparently from a deadly snake bite, perhaps from a very aggressive inland taipan snake. Charles and Martha Branson, parents of Elizabeth Branson, age 28, arrive at the mortuary to identify their daughter. Elizabeth was an environmentalist scientist and often went into wild areas alone to do her work. They were given her belongings, but as they searched through them, Martha asks about Elizabeth’s journal and mobile phone. She never went anywhere without those two items, now nowhere to be found. Raja Williams, is a multi-millionaire living in Florida. He has no family now except for his housekeeper, Gloria, and Vinnie, his investigative partner, computer wizard, and best friend. These two ladies are Raja’s family as far as he’s concerned. Raja is contacted by phone by Charles Branson who wishes to hire Raja to investigate the questionable death of his daughter. Raja will take the case, with no fees which is how Raja rolls. He and Vinny board Raja’s private jet and head immediately to Australia. Their investigation takes many twists and turns and both Raja and Vinnie become perplexed at times. This novel has a very shocking and surprising ending.
Jack Thompson is an awesome author who writes exceptionally well as you swiftly read his exciting novels. His characters are likable and well defined, the story line is suspenseful and well developed. Included in this story is a glossary of Australian phrases and their definitions. The books in this series are definitely fun to read as they are clean, compelling adventures. These stories would also make an exciting television series or a great movie on the big screen.
This series just keeps giving. Zoology graduate, Lizzie Branson had been employed by her ex university professor to catalogue and estimate the animal population in the remote North Central region of Queensland, Australia. During an evening wander she came across a cave and she was beyond excited to discover a hitherto, unknow species of luminescent bats.....this finding was to cost Lizzie her life, but why ? When Lizzie's body was found in her unzipped tent with an obvious deadly snake bite it was assumed to be an accidental death. Lizzie's parents wouldn't accept this verdict, Lizzie was an experienced camper, why was her tent open ? where was her notebook ? nothing added up, they decided to ask for help from Oxford educated, suave, successful P.I Raja Williams and his brilliant, sassy partner Vinny Moore, what Vinny didn't know about computers and hacking wasn't worth knowing. This story is beautifully written, it unfolds into many different avenues and the number of suspects grows but they all merge together beautifully at the end. It is action packed, suspense filled and has brilliant diverse characters, As always, Jack Thompson has extensively researched the Australian outback and especially the customs and culture of the aboriginal people, I learned a lot and I was grateful for the translation links to words that I didn't recognise. I love "Raja's rules" and his "pay it forward" means of payment for his services. A great read and I look forward to reading the next one in the series.
I love it when an author uses the local language of the people who are native to the area. Also love it that Mr. Thompson gave us a dictionary of the meaning of the words and phrases. That’s not an easy task. Also love it when an author makes an area/Country/City a character in the book and then that character takes on significant importance. This story takes place in Australia and the environmental issues are ones that every country faces. I truly enjoyed this part of the book.
By the time you’ve realized you’ve been misled It’s usually too late to change course. Raja and Vinnie wander around on a fools errand in more than one way. That’s very frustrating all by itself. The book is very well written and it was hard for me to put the it down. I can’t wait for the next read!!!
Fast paced reading. I always enjoy reading and learning about geographical and historical regions throughout the world. Just wish Raja would have taken the Healey out for a spin.
Raja and Vinny were called in the case of a grad student, been working in a remote area of Australia. How long and why, when they don’t find some of her personal items. Always of interest when he weaves in historical information.
