Running Wilde

Rate this book
It's not about the cards you're dealt...

Mistress of the House of Swords Sara Wilde finds herself the rising star of Interpol's Most Wanted list—accused of acts of supernatural terrorism and psychic manipulation, a new category of offenses clearly created just for her. Unwilling to drag her friends into danger, Sara's on the run, desperate to find solutions to the coming war on magic while keeping one step ahead of the authorities.

Interpol isn't Sara's only problem, however. While shoring up relations with old allies and updating her intel on the gods and monsters of the Connected black market, she unexpectedly acquires tools of world-ending power...tools that place her squarely in opposition with the Magician, the one being on earth she truly loves. Worse, everywhere Sara turns, she encounters fierce young psychics who seem to know more about her actions than she does...and whose inside information comes with the hint of devastating betrayal.

As Sara struggles to master both her own abilities and those of the extended Connected community, she realizes everything she thought she knew...about the Arcana Council, the Houses of Magic, the Magician, and especially herself...was spectacularly wrong.

How you play your hand can kill you when the game is Running Wilde.

5 Stars… I am not going to lie, initially I was a bit confused as to where the author was leading me in this read… The gaming concept threw me a bit… That is until Jenn Stark brought everything full circle and gave me a thrilling and compelling ending that leads into a highly anticipated finale… I cannot wait to see how this story ends and the potentially devastating impact on these unique and beloved characters:)

Running Wilde by Jenn Stark is smorgasbord of magical delights. Sara is learning up close and personal that with power comes great responsibility. Experiencing new levels of her power will push Sara's threshold of pain, landing her into the arms of one of the most powerful members of the Arcana Council. The Magician is back in all his bronze glory and Miss Wilde is his playground! No longer is reading the cards for answers enough. Sara will have to decide how she will sacrifice herself for those who she loves. Stark nails another fantastic story and I'm certifiably addicted.

I liked this installment in Stark's Immortal Vegas series. Did I love it as much as others? Not quite. HOWEVER, I feel like a lot of the content in this book was necessary.

The reader finally has some questions answered, some characters revisited from previous books. Why is Viktor such an asshole? How is Interpol following her every move? How can she help the Magician avoid what he most fears- a stand-off resulting in her death?

That being said, we pick up with Sara on the run. Interpol seems to know her every move, and they've made her one of their most wanted. While she's on the run, she takes the opportunity to investigate some of the technoceutical producers around the world who may be responsible for the dangerous and addictive LIFE.

In the midst of her runaway investigation, Kreios (everyone, but particularly Nikki Dawes's favorite Devil) finds Sara and puts her onto a task. Go to a place that's not supposed to exist, find something that's supposed to have been long lost, and figure out how its power should be wielded. Easy, right?

Unfortunately, Sara can't figure out Kreios's angle. Why does he TRULY want these items? What repercussions will they have? And, most importantly, why does it seem like the Devil is trying to make major moves without the knowledge of the Magician?

Overall, I enjoyed the novel. There's a video game that becomes an extremely important aspect of the novel, and that area became a bit convoluted. I recommend you read over those details slowly, so you can fully understand the game's purpose and importance.

Other than that, I just wish more of the game's purpose had truly been discovered by Sara. I felt like it was handed to her a bit and would have liked to see her and the House of Swords gang sleuth through it on their own, but I understand why it was necessary for the information to be revealed how it was. That's what's most important to me, that even if I don't quite like how something has unfolded, that it has a sense to WHY it needed to develop that way.

I think the end of the novel shows promising set-up for the next installment in the spring: the Council will be dealing with some major changes and upheaval, Armeus (my favorite) has become a new (or very old) version of himself, and Sara seems like she's no longer afraid to acknowledge what and WHO she truly wants in her life.

Boooooonnnn ...

Weeeeeeeeell ... I don't really know how to rate this book ... Or this series for that matter ...
The problem I think is that I tend to compare it to the Cassandra Palmer series by Karen Chance ... And this is one of my favorite series <3
The other problem is that at the beginning it was mythology and magic and there was a lot of stuff going on and then it became plots around drugs and different groups of more or less shady mafioso who face each other ... And I like it less ...
In short, this book was a bit of a disappointment because if the characters (including the heroine) are more mature, I had the impression that it was almost not progressing and that finally it was a lot of blahblah for nothing ... I wanted more, more complexity, more mysteries (OH we barely saw the library of Alexandria !!)
And unfortunately, the relationship between Sara and Armaeus leaves me indifferent =S
Well, I hope that the next book will be a little more eventful =)

This was another amazing read by Jenn Stark. I love the characters throughout this novel and the story is developing into a finale which you know is going to be epic. In this installment we see Sara Wilde still on the run from Interpol whilst trying to problem solve the war on magic which is coming with a vengeance. Whilst on the run, Sara is entrusted with a task from the Devil who wants her to find magic scrolls which could bring about the war as well as end it.
Again, Sara travels to the far reaches of the world to Nepal as well as to the Library of Alexandria (where she has an interesting discussion with Death) and meets the head Librarian whose a little different. The story is full of action and there is some amazing twists in it.
We also see more of Simon (The Fool) in this book and he is definitely an interesting character. There is also more development between The Magician and Sara which will be interesting to see on how that will develop (especially since they have a will they/won't they destroy each other type of relationship).
Although I enjoyed this book, I can't say it was my favourite and this was mainly due to the topic of the video game which I didn't know a lot about so sometimes what was happening in the story was a bit confusing for me, but overall, it was still an enjoyable book.

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR AGES FOR THIS BOOK.
And the only reason that it doesn't get 5 stars is that it feels a bit like filler, like the Empire Strikes Back of the series. Essentially Sara has gone on the run and keeps discovering things about herself. She also trains in the mountains of Japan (of course), does some retrieving and builds an army via an MMO and is also betrayed. (The person doing the betrayal was a total surprise and I didn't see that coming, even with the backstory so that was good!) and I like how all the characters are still there in some capacity makes the series feel like you're meeting old friends again!! Some more backstory on Gamon, Sara evolving, the Magician evolving and so on.....

This book has just made me *so excited* for the next one - the actual war on (of?) magic and where Sara's powers will take her. I like that she hasn't gone Super Saiyan with her powers (Harry Dresden, Anita Blake I'm looking at you) just that she's still discovering them but now that we know who her parents are, it makes total sense!

I so enjoy this series. I love Sara and I am always eager for her next adventure. I highly recommend you read the whole series. It is action packed and will keep you guessing.

This one really keeps you wondering about the motives of the people in her life. More and more secrets come out as she tries to keep ahead of law enforcement and she is really put in the middle of some dangerous games. I really like that the author doesn't make it easy to pick a side as the characters are not all good or bad. Sometimes you really do have to dig under the surface to find the truth.

This book has more self reflection. She really addresses some of her past. Her relationship with the Magician is one of my favorite pieces. Sara has been reluctant to really dig deeper into her feelings and in this one gets more honest with herself. You definitely feel the tension between them as they both try to do what is right even if it might hurt the one they care about the most.

I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received.

I really enjoyed this latest addition to the Immortal Vegas series. Sara grows tremendously as a character and comes to terms with herself and magical abilities. This growth has been hinted at in previous books, and I’m glad she’s finally moving forward with more confidence. Her new found self awareness helps her on her path with Armaeus, and I’m looking forward to seeing how this changes the dynamic in their relationship. This book foreshadows some big changes toward the future and tensions are on the rise. The book was fast paced, engaging, and I couldn’t put it down. A lot happens... at some points I had to reread a section to make sure I understood all the intricacies of each scene. I highly recommend this series and love these books.

I love this series because I feel like I'm right there with the main character, Sarah, through her journey. Jenn Stark does an amazing job of taking us around the globe and giving us glimpses into other cultures, ancient artifacts, and mysteries. The tarot card interpretations used to unravel clues to these treasure hunts are brilliant. There is a complex cast of characters each with their own agendas but the author weaves them all so seamlessly into the story arc I'm always amazed. There are unexpected plot twists that constantly keep you guessing. And a slow burning romance that is has taken us 9 books to make some real progress!! Thank you for giving us a more vulnerable and emotionally available Magician in this book! I can't wait to read the next!

Finally some answers

I love this series. There are times when I get mad at the characters because of things they aren’t doing, it I love the fact that they are evolving in each installment. This one finally rounds the corner and we are given a glimpse of what Sara should be, should have been, could be, but more importantly an explanation as to why she isn’t those things/people. I’m starting to see the threads hidden in earlier books tie themselves off to create an amazing tapestry telling one heck of a tale.
Read them all, read them in order, and let yourself what if.

The series got a bit...much.

I truly enjoyed the first five books. The sixth got a bit far flung. By the seventh, I was more than done. Too "deus ex machina" for my tastes. I really enjoyed her when she was an artifact hunter. Then she had to go and get a snotty martyr complex. Since I bought the books in advance, there was nothing left to do but suffer it out.
It has taught me to just purchase as I go, and not pay for something I'm going to resent having to read. Love and learn!

Awesome Series

Based loosely on the Tarot, the Council is made up of the Magician, the Fool, the High Priestess, the Emperor, the Empress, the Hierophant, the Hanged Man and the Hermit. They work to keep magic in balance. But, the world can never truly be in balance. People always want more power or more drugs or more money, always more. Sara just wants the Connected (psychic) children to be safe. Children have always been preyed upon, but now they are, also, being sacrificed. These books, this series, has been amazing. Highly recommend.

I have forgotten some of the things that happened in the previous books, things that were touched on but not expanded upon in this book. So I was a little bit on the back foot for some of the book, but I'm sure I wouldn't be if I decided to reread the entire series.

Aside from that, it was a pleasure to continue watching Sara's character growth, and Nikki did *not* get as much book time as I'd have liked!

Wow, but not in a good way

I was really loving this series until the last couple of books. This one, in particular, was over the top. I had to force myself to keep reading. I didn't enjoy the gaming aspect and the metaphysical slant was confused at best. I'm not sure when Sara became the responsible party for everyone that needs saving. I will probably finish the series but I'm not looking forward to the next book the way I did previous books. Too bad.

Hmm...

I've enjoyed this series a lot and as I'm currently on holiday in Vegas I thought it would be great to read this while I was here, imagining the Councils residences above the hotels of the Strip, but most of this book isn't even set in Vegas and I kinda lost interest about half way through for a while.

Eventually I picked it back up and finished it. The war on magic is almost here now and everything is intensifying.

Off to start book 10

I can never say enough good things about this book series and this book was just as good. It is full of action and suspense and keeps you riveted to your seat wanting to read the next page. Fair warning. Buy the next book in the series way before you finish the one you are currently reading because you will be more than ready to pick it up and keep finding out what will happen next in Sara Wilde's life.

Just keeps getting better!

I pounced on this as soon as it was delivered and inhaled it. I am LOVING the growth and depth of the characters, and can happily say that each book surpasses the others.

So much of what I want to write here falls into the category of spoilers, so I will just say: buy it. If you’ve loved this series from the start, you won’t regret it.

What a nice way to end the year of 2017 and to start the year of 2018.
To re-connect with Sara, her Magician, Nikki and the rest.
This was, as always, a very good read. I loved every minute (page).
I am so looking forward to the next adventure for Sara and the Council.

Thank You Very Much Ms. Stark

Good

As with all her books in this series it takes a couple chapters to get going. But once it does you are racing to the next page to see what happens. And oh boy does a lot happen. Talk about seeing doubles or missing half of yourself. Do I recommend? Yes. Will I re-read? Maybe. I am def looking forward to the next book of course. Too many things are going down.

Almost lost me

The addition of the gaming world into this part of the series nearly pushed me away. It almost seems like a pandering overlay to reach out to younger readers and seemed very out of place to me. But Stark reined it in and made it fit, mostly. It seems an unnecessarily complicated way to advance the story line, but we shall see what spring brings us with book 10.

Nine books in this series keeps getting better and better. The characters, background and world building are unique. Initially after book one, I wasn't sure I would stay interested. By then end of book 2, I was hooked and started binge reading. That's my sign of a good series.... I can't stop reading until I'm to the last book published, then I have to stop.

Good book

Interesting that the author introduced the gaming world into this series. A little far-fetched, even for this genre, but the overall arc of the series was advanced, so I guess it worked. I did not enjoy this book as much as the previous book, but I will read the next to see how the series concludes.
