Unfinished

Brian and Marcie were supposed to live happily ever after--they repeated vows that stated that very sentence. So no one, especially Brian, could have predicted that Marcie would file for divorce. It was difficult to fight the situation, finding that all his possessions were packed and waiting by the door when he came home from work that Thursday evening.

Kate Moore sat in a stupor for a month. Unlike any other breakup she had experienced, this felt more like a drive by shooting, with her ex holding the smoking gun as he sped away. What happened, she asked herself, knee-deep in peanut butter cups and bags of cheese doodles. Oliver was the man she was going to marry...she'd already pinned a secret board of wedding dresses and honeymoon destinations.

1247 Sycamore Street, Apartment A and B respectively, is where Kate and Brian find themselves after their tumultuous breakups. An unlikely relationship would soon ensue between these shattered souls, and 'what ifs' would slowly rise to the surface of their attraction for one another. But, what would happen to their budding relationship when their ex's want a second chance?

Where to start with this review..... I have so many emotions running through me as I decide what to write. There was so much going on and I was so invested in these couples. My heart went out to Brian and Kate because they did nothing to deserve the treatment they received from their partner. The way they were thrown to the curb like they were trash was not called for and I hated their partners for doing that. This is one emotional ride that will have you laughing and crying and screaming at your kindle because you get so emotional reading it.

Brian never in a million years expected the love of his life to throw him out and file for divorce. She said she had enough well marriage is hard and it is not easy it is something you have to work through in order to stay together. My mother always said to me the family that prays together stays together.

Then poor Kate she was thrown to the curb by Oliver and I never understood his reasoning because to me he was a douche and needed to go and she deserved to be happy.

Then Kate and Brian move to 1247 Sycamore Street and they meet and start to have a friendship. As their friendship starts to grow they begin to have feelings for one another and just when they are ready to become a couple their ex's come back and want them back. What will they do?Will they return to their ex's or will they take a chance on second love and move on together and leave their ex's in the wind!

I personally didn't like how the story started out with the wife cheating and having the husband move out. If she wanted out she should have up and left. Personally, she was just awful and very dislikable and made me not want to read the entire story because based on the synopsis the whole story has cheating elements and awful exes which I am not okay with.

I didn't find out about the other characters and their story or relationship. I'm sure it's just as dreadful though.

Basically, I didn't care for this book based on personal experience. That's all. I'm sure its a lovely story filled with lots of fluff but I just don't care for the elements of it.

From the moment I started reading this book I was utterly charmed by the main couple and their sweet and slow burning relationship. I was charmed by their kind hearts and the comfort they found just by being with each other. Kate and Brian are just two average folks who were betrayed by love and who ultimately start over in a journey that had them finding themselves along with acceptance in each other’s arms.

Kate Moore grew up in a small town, embraced it because of the closeness to others as well as finding a safe place within her close-knit family’s arms, but being equally frustrated by wanting to stretch her wings. She’s a good girl with a big heart of gold that she wears on her sleeve. Her entry into the big city had her finding what she thought was love with a rich playboy who subtly changed her while keeping her separate from his affluent world. After his unwillingness to commit he walked away in search of fame which broke her heart, but allowed her to see the truth of him which in turn opened her eyes to the new neighbor next door. She’s instantly smitten with Brian but his slow break-up with his wife keeps them in the friend-zone until a moment of heartbreak for him has their true feelings come bubbling to the surface. Theirs isn’t an easy relationship though as a lie she told her parents leads to hurt feelings for everyone and could very well end the happiness she just started experiencing in Brian’s arms. Kate’s a likable heroine, almost too good to be true at times. She’s also a bit old fashioned when it comes to relationships and marriage as she thinks that one year of togetherness equals an engagement. These ideas definitely came from her family who seemed caught in the good old days and had trouble with her wanting something more from living on her own in a big city. Kate was very understanding and supportive which left her blindsided a time or two by the men in her life. I wish she’d been more concerned with self-preservation as she let herself be taken advantage of when it came to her feelings. Despite many frustrating moments when it came to her actions I still found her an endearing heroine more than worthy of HEA and I applauded those rare moments where she stood up for herself.

Brian Simmons is a bit of a nerd when readers first meet him, a good guy and a good father, but it’s clear that his marriage is in trouble. This is an obvious fact for readers to see but he’s desperate to ignore the truth as he doesn’t want his daughter to suffer and still strongly believes in the vows he once took. With his wife’s constant criticism, when she’s not ignoring him that is, the love he once felt though is slowly being snuffed out. Into all this sadness comes a bright light of joy the moment he meets his new neighbor Kate. Being with her is easy and together they become a solid support system as each of them deal with emotional hurts. They’re good friends from the start and it’s a slow and steady burn towards something more in a journey that has a few hiccups along the way. Brian too is a likable character, a true gentleman with a bit of old fashioned-ness when it comes to sex and marriage. His best quality though is being a loving father and the scenes with his daughter Ellen were further proof of what a great guy he was and further endeared him to me.

This was a heartwarming read on a whole with a main couple worthy of a HEA. They were great as friends, playful and supportive, but I longed for them to jump each other as the wait was frustrating and not as steamy as I’d hoped. Causing further frustration was him ignoring the truth about his wife wanting to end things, causing a lot of unnecessary heartache for Kate as well as himself. Kate too made me frustrated by having Brian pretend to be her ex when they went home to see her family as she didn’t want them to be disappointed which led to over-the-top melodrama. Along the way to HEA there were many heartwarming moments, many warm and fuzzy exchanges between Brian and Kate, which made these frustrating moments even more glaring. Despite that I enjoyed this book and recommend it to those looking for a romance full of heart and soul.

Unfinished by Julieann Dove

She didn't realize she lost her voice until a stranger gave her back her heart. There will be tissues, but out of heartache comes hope and Unfinished never gives up on that. Marcie thought she was living the dream, until her happy ending imploded all around her. A chance encounter could be the push she needs to begin anew. Yet when the pain of the past resurfaces, can her new beginning survive the fallout? Dove takes readers from angsty to inspired in the most captivating way.

It was okay.
Both are recovering from broken down relationships.
The situation gets really complicated and I must admit a bit silly.
Their HEA doesn't happen until the last few pages.
They both have intimacy with their exes after their relationship has started after they break up.
No intimate details.
Not really for me but it's okay.

Julieann Dove completely blew me away!

This is my second read from this author and oh my, Unfinished turned out to be so much more than I had expected. The blurb was very grabby, making me want to read it long before it was even released. And then after I started reading it, I realized real quickly, the story was going to break me. Brian and Kate were very well-developed characters that I wanted to hug, I wanted to be their friend and tell them both to not give up hope. Not so much for Marcie and Oliver.

Dove pulled out all the emotions and left her heart on the pages while the main characters struggled to deal with relationships that neither were ready to give up on. Dove spared nothing as she shared such a beautiful story that could very well have been written about someone I know. It felt real, it was raw, and it was tear-jerking at times.

This is the kind of story I yearn to read! Dove is one of those authors that appealed to me instantly with her tell-it-like-it-is style of writing. It's going to be painful, but the journey will be worth it. One of my favorite reads this year!!

I loved the easy friendship that developed between Brian and Kate. This is a clean romance without any sex scenes. Both are getting over complete heartbreak from their exs. Brian's life is a complete hot mess since he's not only dealing with Marcie's depression, alcoholism, but also stepping up to care for their daughter. A daughter he's no longer allowed to see when he wants since Marcie wants a divorce. But what happens when Marcie finds out that Kate is in the picture?

Kate knew she should stay away from Brian. Honestly, she just wants someone to share a meal with and spend time with. Since moving to the suburbs from her swanky apartment she shared with Oliver, Kate is lonely. She doesn't have anyone to really talk to. Her bestie Carlee lives in the city and is busy. It's nice to share food, wine, and watch television with someone without pressure. Kate can be herself around Brian. But what happens when Oliver wants Kate back? Kate thought that Oliver was her forever guy even if Carlee warned her that Oliver is a playboy. What's a girl to do?

Kate thought she had found her Prince Charming and that they were going to live happily ever after until she asked for more than he was willing to give, and he couldn’t get out the door fast enough. Hindsight is 20/20 and she realizes that he never fully incorporated her into his life and her next door neighbor, Brian, became her support system as he was going through a breakup himself.

Brian’s marriage hasn’t been happy for a while, but he is willing to keep trying for the sake of their daughter. When his wife ends their relationship, he is left trying to pick up the pieces of his life.

Kate and Brian were both lonely and became friends and over time their relationship evolved into much more. When their pasts resurface will they choose the love they know or the new love they have found in each other?

This is a slow burn filled with angst and emotion as both Kate and Brian try to heal from the past and decide what they want in the future.

I received an advanced copy to read in exchange for an honest review.

This is a well written story that highlights just how complicated relationships can be. I liked that it was an honest in how hard it is when long term relationships end.

Brian and Marcie were happy married until an accident torn them and their family apart. Brian is shocked when Marcie announces he needs to leave. Brian is devastated and find an apartment 10 minutes away so he can still see his daughter Ellen often.

Katie and Oliver had a long term relationship and were living together. Kate a struggling artist and Oliver had family money. Although they came from different worlds the both loved art. Katie is shocked when one day out of the blue Oliver announces he is leaving to go to Italy without Katie.

Katie leaves Oliver’s apartment they had been sharing and moved into an apartment in the suburbs and take a job teaching art at a local school to make ends meet.

The day Brian moves into his apartment he meets Katie. They are two hurting people who are struggling to move on from a difficult break up.

Will Brian and Marie get a second chance? Will Oliver return to Katie wanting her back? Will the friendship that Katie and Brian have started get a chance to bloom into something beautiful?

Unfinished is a roller coaster. It had me rolling everywhere and feeling every possible emotion in existence. Tears were shed, people. And I ran out of tissues a week ago, so I didn't have that privilege. But I genuinely loved Brian and Marcie's story. It was a wild, emotional ride that I would totally take again.
This is the second book I have read from the lovely Julieann Dove. And I am officially hooked. I need more of your books!

Brian and Marcie have been together since college but recent years has seen the breakdown of their marriage. They have been through something no parent should ever have to face and have found it difficult to open up to each other. When divorce is on the cards Brian moves into a new apartment where he meets his new neighbour Kate.
Kate is starting over after her boyfriend walked out on her and left the country, she's not looking for a new relationship but when she meets Brian there is a spark between them and soon there is more between them than friendship. When both their ex's decide they want them back how will they react, will they go back to what they thought they wanted or will true love win out.

An enjoyable and quite an emotional read and also a first for me from Julieann Dove, I will definitely be reading more in the future.

Brian and Marcie have been together for years but tragic circumstances change their story. Marcie decides they need time apart. Brian is shocked but assumes it’s only temporary. He finds a place and meets his neighbor Kate. Will Marcie take Brian back? Can they go back to before tragedy? How will Kate effect Brian’s choices? My first book by this author but looking forward to more.

This is beautiful story focused on love and a second chance.
It is the type of story that clutches you at once and doesn't release you until you get to the end - then you find yourself pining over the fact that the book has ended.

I loved how the relationship unfolded so we could see these amazing characters grow in ways they never expected.

Unfinished by Julieann Dove is an emotional story that will tear at your heartstrings and hoping that the characters can find the happiness that they so desperately want and deserve. Brian and Marcie had the perfect family and were so in love, until a tragedy they never expected rocked their world. Brian yearns to have his wife back, his wife who has been living at the bottom of a bottle for the last two years while he takes care of their adorable daughter and tries to put their lives back together. Putting on a brave face for the world, Brian is a little broken each day not knowing how to get his family back to what they once were.

When Marcie tells Brian that she wants to separate it feels like his world is crashing down around him once again and he wants nothing more than for it to be temporary so that he can be back with his daughter Ellen everyday and his wife. But when Brian meets his artistic neighbor Kate, he begins a friendship that he has no idea will change his life in so many ways.

Kate is teaching at the local elementary school and focusing on her art, despite the push back from her family back in Montana who want nothing more than for her to come home, marry and settle down. Kate befriends Brian and tries to give him a shoulder to lean on during this difficult time in his life, what she doesn't expect is to fall for him.

The journey of Kate, Brian and Marcie is one of heartache, hurt and tragedy but also hope, happiness and in the end the love of a lifetime.

I’m going to start off with what I struggled with when it came to the story and that is I felt like most of the time I was being told what happened and not seeing it. There would be time jumps and then bam, we are told big things that happened during those time jumps. I found that it really annoyed me and made it to where I couldn’t really connect with the story. I liked Brian and Kate well enough and their romance was unique but being able to be in the story and just experience it with the characters is important to me.

Having a unique story is always important and the author did that with this story. New neighbors to love type thing but it was a lot different then that too. I guess what I’m trying to say is the overall plot was good, but it bounced around to much and left me not fulfilled because of being told and not just experiencing things. At this point, I’m not sure of this authors writing style works for me so I’m not sure I will read more. It was my experience when reading this book.

I’m still giving this book 3 stars because I really liked the plot. The characters were awesome and I was able to feel for them and what they went though. Just because the writing didn’t work for me doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good book, just means that it didn’t work for me. 3 stars #2OCCJD

This book took me longer to read than I thought it would, as I had to put it down and walk away from time to time. Brian and Marcie lost a child and that loss had, as you can imagine, a profound effect on their lives, and finally on their marriage. Instead of bringing the two closer together (as it did in the case of my husband and me), they grew further apart with until Marcie told Brian to find another place to live. This book was so beautifully written, I could feel their pain, a pain that never truly goes away, and remember, as though I could ever forget, how it felt to be caught in the clutches of such sorrow.
Kate Moore thought she and Oliver would get married and live happily ever after, that is, until Oliver ran from her. Kate left the city and moved to an apartment in the suburbs where she hoped to get over Oliver. The same building where Brian moved so he could be near his young daughter.
What I loved about the book was that Brian and Kate both had monumental issues to overcome which became complicated when their ex’s decided they wanted to reconcile. I will leave it to you to discover the outcome. To me, the choices they made were the right ones and the ending left me satisfied with the conclusion.
The story was well crafted and the characters were believable. I would definitely recommend UNFINISHED.
My thanks to the author for the ARC. I have received no compensation for my honest review.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. This book is about two people, Kate and Brian, who find each other after their relationships have fallen apart. While living in the same apartment building they develop a friendship while sharing meals that begins to turn into more, but what happens when those who broke your heart want you back? Who will they chose? The writing style was great. The author had a way of allowing the reader to be drawn into the emotions of the loss and despair the couple were going through, Marcie and Brian. I really felt, at times, Brian was too nice of a guy especially in dealing with his wife Marcie. I loved the friendship that developed between Kate and Brian, but at times, I wanted to shake both characters for some of the choices they were making with their exs. The shift of POVs between the two main characters was hard to follow at times. The story moved at a good pace throughout the book and I never felt there were unnecessary dialogue or scenes. I was very satisfied with the ending of the book. I will mostly likely begin to read other books written by this author.

4.5 Stars!

The first few chapters are difficult to read, and not because they aren’t good. They depict a marriage in shambles after a devastating loss so realistically that it made my heart break for Brian.

Brian is not just a “nice” guy. He is probably the ultimate good guy. My heart hurt for everything that he had gone through and continued to struggle with so selflessly. I honestly detested Marcie. She had no redeeming qualities in my opinion and she was brutal to Brian without any care to how he dealt with the loss.

I initially found Kate to be a bit spoiled and whiny, particularly during her last conversation with Oliver before Italy. However, I definitely softened towards her when she reached out to Brian.

I LOVED their friendship! I felt their chemistry and thought their personalities were the perfect match. The only reason this was not a full 5 star read for me was due to the lack of an epilogue. An epilogue dating a few years in the future and showing how the characters, yes, even Marcie and Oliver, moved forward in their lives would have been the perfect finish to a great story.

When I first started this book, I was really enjoying it, thinking it would get at least a 4 star rating. Unfortunately, it lost me about midbook. It's kind of hard to describe what happened, but it started to really drag out. To the point of almost not wanting to complete it. I read a book very similar to the part of this one where a fake couple goes to Montana to meet family so maybe this is why it almost lost me. Brian and Kate did the same thing. I felt like I was reading another book injected into the middle of a different story. I will say that Julieann did a good job of making me dislike both Oliver and Marcie. I was really concerned there for a bit that both jerk exes were going to get their way. The ending gave it some brownie points back. I am a sucker for cutesy, chick flick worthy endings.

To have a traumatic event happen in your life is devastating. To have a traumatic event happen in your marriage is not only devastating but sometimes difficult to move on from in the marriage. Marcie, I get why you blamed Brian. I get why you turned to alcohol. Unfortunately, Brian kept the family together and you weren't there emotionally. Brian stood there and did everything possible trying to make their marriage work. Sometimes, you can't come back from a traumatic event. How do you move on? You find a way to move on. You go a different path in life. You never forget the heartache but after awhile, you can live with a smile again. This is the first book I’ve read by Julieann Dove, but it won’t be my last. Unfinished is the story of how Brian and Kate meet and what happens afterwards. Brian moves into an apartment upstairs, after his wife, Marcie, kicks him out. Kate lives in the apartment downstairs and helps him move his stuff in. They become friends and he hopes to get back with his wife. Kate still has hope of getting back with Oliver, her boyfriend that went to Italy without her. Grab your copy and read this emotional read about learning to survive without the one you love and the child you have and the one you lost.

This is the first book I have read from this author. Wow. Gripping interesting heart wrenching. All the emotions in a great storyline. Brian doesn't know what to do anymore. For the past two years his life with his wife Marcie has been a living hell. She finally tells him to move out. He moves not far away and meets Katie.
Katie is dealing with her own grief in a way. Her crap of a boyfriend left her for Italy. She ends up moving and taking on a new job. These two have issues all of their own. But together they are perfect. But will they realize it before it is to late?
This is about putting hurts behind and moving on. It was an amazing book from beginning to end.

This book surprised me by how much I enjoyed it. I don’t usually read books with this setting but I was looking thru some free ARC books and decided to try something different. I like my books to be more light cotton candy. So this book was different for me. It got real and the characters went thru some really bad times, some soul searching times of break up, loss, and divorce. And yet I really enjoyed the underlining message of hope and personal growth. I was wavering near the end, wondering, hoping, for a HEA. And it did have a good one.
Heat level: mild, between PG and PG-13 for some themes that were discussed.
My review is voluntary and my honest opinion.

A new to me author, one who bowled me over from the beginning. Getting to know Brian, his dreams, future plans, devastation and heartbreak. It was all happening in real life around me, I felt his confusion, pain, acceptance and then hope. However each time I felt that hope for him, I would glance at the top of the page and wonder who would end up with a life unfinished. Would it be Marcie, Brian or Kate?
Julieann Dove will definitely be an author I will be following. This book is just ....... WOW.

This is a friends to lovers story. Brian is having a hard time coming to grips with the end of his marriage following a tragedy. His wife is done with him and makes him move out of the house. His new neighbor is Kate, whose relationship also recently ended. I really like how their relationship really stays friends, even when they are having issues--especially him. There are some real moments of sadness and disconnect.

I feel like I almost need to start this review with a disclaimer; I am a tough reviewer. I have high expectations and high standards and I hold every book I read to the same standard of quality. That being said while I did like Unfinished, I didn't love it. And believe me, I really wanted to love it.
