Burnt Devotion

Rate this book
What happens when you are supposed to die...... but don't.

And no, I'm not talking about Joclyn - although she has pulled that stunt too.

I was supposed to die over a hundred years ago, but I didn't. Cail saved me, then Talon. But all that stuff has a habit of sneaking up on you like a bad 90s rock ballad. And here I am, about to die. Again.

Well, I mean, if you think you can kill me that easy. Too bad almost death comes with a bit more baggage than a roadie aboard the Firefly.

Jos can tell you that. See, she wasn't supposed to live either and now her flubbed self-sacrifice has ruined everything. Well, if you listen to Sain.

Sights are broken, magic is scattered, and we might be headed straight into an all out armageddon.

Depending on the black-eyed Drak you listen to anyway. Prague may not survive this battle, it may be ripped to shreds... or burned to ashes.

Rewritten and Expanded as of December 2018! With 13k words of new content, Wyn's tattoos have never looked better! The danger is about to get real.

Little Disappointed

I have LOVED this series. Jocelyn is such a strong character, and Ilyan is great too. I feel like if this author had an editor she could really shine: this story doesn't need to be stretched into six books. Compared to the strength of the first four books, this really felt like a self-indulgent author excursion into the back stories of the supporting characters. I can see that she loves these characters.

Maybe when the sixth book comes out I will see that this couldn't have been written any other way, but it really felt jarring and not contiguous with the previous story line.

I don't know about everyone else but I can't get into the idea of Joclyn with Ilyan. I love her relationship with Ryland and even though so much has happened, I think they both deserve an end where they get each other. I feel like the books will have no meaning to them if Jos and Ry don't have each other. The books are great, don't get me wrong but to end it ideally i would have to say that Jos and Ry have to be together that is where their happiness is, because even after all the fighting and the wanting to kill they manage to come together again! Don't you guys believe in soul mates and true love conquering all in its path to be able to live on for eternity.
I honestly hope I am not wrong and I wish for the perfect ending to an amazing Journey.

Secrets Are Oozing

The series is heating up in ways that I had certainly not anticipated. The final plays are being set up, the players are arraying their pieces for the final battle. Some questions are answered, sometimes satisfactorily and sometimes ending with many more questions left in their wake. Is that bad? Actually, no, no it is not bad. It does make for quite the interesting story that is sure to affect so much more than was originally believed.

Survival takes center stage as new revelations surface and the battle lines blur. With Sain’s manipulation growing, Prague threatened, and the world's magic splintering, the story continues to build tension. While slightly slower in pace, this installment fleshes out backstories and internal conflict, keeping the reader invested in what’s next.

Phew.

First, let me just say that every time I finish a book in this series, I have to take a second to take a deep breath and download because they take me through such an emotional wringer! I get so lost in the story, and the writing consumes my heart and my mind and I literally feel like I’ve run through a full roller coaster of emotions – it’s exhausting! (and a sign of some talented writing to accomplish that).

So – back to business. After Soul of Flame (see bottom of review for series read order) was supposed to be the final instalment in the series: Dawn of Ash, however some characters screamed to have their stories told and Burnt Devotion happened- not that I'm complaining.

The story starts almost around the same time as Soul of Flame, perhaps just before, and the first half of the book runs concurrently with the events of Soul of Flame, except it’s told from Wyn, Ryland and Ovailia’s POV. It does include some of Jos’s POV once we catch up with the timeline from the end of Soul of Flame, but continues to switch POV’s between the characters. The book starts off right as Wyn’s curse is kicking in and we relive the event from Wyn’s POV including her interactions with Dramin and Thom during her recovery. Then we jump to Ryland’s POV and the conflict between him and Jos as he literally fights with himself and the voice in his head that wants him to kill Jos – hello crazy train. And lastly Ovailia, as we find out how long she’s been in league with Edmund and the machinations she continues to carry out on his behalf.

So…they escape (or so they think) from Edmund’s army that had them surrounded and make their way to Prague where the remainder of the story unfolds. Jos and Ilyan are now bonded and she has to come to terms with the new authority that grants her – unwanted or not, while fighting off an attack on the city. She’s also dealing with visions of the future that she is desperately trying to change. One vision in particular terrifies her.

Wyn helps Ryland regain a piece of his sanity, while recovering something precious to her in the process.
Edmund sends Ovailia on a mission to sabotage Ilyan’s group yet again.

And Sain’s story starts to unfold at the end of this book… whoa. I knew something was going on there but I didn’t think this is where it was going… And no! I shall say no more! Haha
While the story DOES backtrack a bit, it was totally necessary and revealing enough to be warranted. This book has definitely set the stage for a dramatic conclusion in the next book – a book I’m eagerly awaiting!

Series read order:
Kiss of Fire
Eyes of Ember
Scorched Treachery
Soul of Flame
Burnt Devotion
Dawn of Ash (Not yet Released – Mid 2015 I hear?)

I really enjoyed reading this book so much. I still hate the main chick tho. She’s such a B—ch! But the rest of the characters are good!

I hate myself for not loving this book. The story did continue. The character's are evolving. I felt the twists and turns happening, but I just wasn't present for it all.

I went into this thinking I'd get the story from Jos or Ilyan and it ended up being more Wyn and Ryland. I dislike Ryland very much and I don't particularly want to be in Wyn's head. I guess it was my own fault for not coming to terms with what I wanted to happen VS what I was told would happen.

The first half of the book was a big summary of what happened in the last book, except in Wyn and Ryland's point of view. I skimmed those chapters like no one could because I simply don't care or want to know all the pain Ryland suffered or what the loss of someone special is doing to Wyn.

I loved the two chapter's in Jos's point of view and how Jos and Ilyan help and care for each other. The bonus chapter in Ilyan's point of view was AWESOME! I need more of those moments in the actual story and not in the form of a bonus chapter.

The last chapter was what brought me back into the story. I totally wasn't expecting that. It was like a twist within a lie within a twist. Though I can't believe that Sain is that arrogant, but then again he's too secretive for his own good. Now I understand why this book got delayed. Sain did punch a nice big hole in things.

Wow!! I didn't want this to end; I got so involved with the story and can't wait until the final book is out.

The Imdalind Series book 5 - Burnt Devotion is the beginning of the end of the fight against Edmund. This book has a lot of twists and turns and makes you wonder how Joclyn and Ilyan will come out of it.

The story follows Joclyn and Ilyan through the caves to Prague, but once they reach their destination the war begins. Vil`ys attacks them and humans, once a human is bitten, Edmund controls them.

Each of the characters goes through their own living hell, which Edmund was put them through. Joclyn fights against the hurt, the trust of whether or not Ryland will kill her, while Ilyan continues to guide the last remaining members of his race to safe place.

Ryland fights everyone due to the monsters his father has infected him with, but everyone struggles to keep him safe while the battle rages on.

Wynifred fights feelings from her lost mate and feelings of memories from years past and present.

Dramin is barely holding on, while Sain is hiding the something.

Edmund and Olivia are moving forward to destroy them all and use them as pawns in his game of destructions.

Ms. Ethington writes another fantastic story and I will be sorry when it ends. Will Joclyn and Ilyan save the world as we know it or does Edmund finally win control? Are the Sights broken and no longer can be trusted?

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves paranormal and suspense.

I was so excited to get my hands on this book, since it features my favorite character, Wyn. Wow, Rebecca Ethington blew my mind yet again! Even though the book is parallel to book 4 for the majority, it was awesome to see Wyn's perspective as the events unfolded. I also appreciated just how much of a villain Ovalia really is, since the chapters from her point of view really bring this into focus. Oh poor Ryland! He is such a tortured soul. He sure deserves a break, so I was glad to see the direction his character is now taking and that there is hope for a happy ending for him as well. I knew something was very off with Sain, but I did not see coming what it actually turned out to be! It was a game changer, that is for sure! Yes, this series continues to be intense and keeps you wanting more. It was definitely worth the wait too! I am so pumped up for the finale. Rebecca Ethington is crazy good at this writing thing, so who knows what great things she has in store for our heroes and what rotten things for our villains.

3.0. As much as I hate to say it, this one was my least favorite of the series. It seemed to take me forever to finish.

Burnt Devotion basically reiterates the events in the Rioseco abbey, the tunnels, and Prague but in Wyn’s, Ryland’s and Ovalia’s viewpoints. Here are my thoughts:

• I was thinking we would learn a lot more about the relationship between Wyn and Thom; Burnt Devotion didn’t go into as much detail as I had hoped.
• Nowhere near enough Ilyan.
• Sain … such a disappointment.
• Knowing why Ryland and Ovalia (and now Sain) were the way they were made them slightly less frustrating.
• I think Ethington is incredibly talented, but while the language and imagery are beautiful, there were a lot of editing issues, especially repeated words within a sentence.

Even though I was a little disappointed with this entry, will I quit reading the series? Definitely not. I’m dying to see how everything plays out.

Very good. I loved all the different points of view in this book. I made me loathe a couple characters more, and fall more in love with others. I liked Ryland more by the end and have hope for his future. Sain and Ovalia can both drown in a sea of lava.

The end gave me hope for the ending of the next and last book, and also fear of what a certain man has up his sleeve. It's going to be an exciting conclusion.

Burnt Devotion (Imdalind Series Book 5)

I think Wyn’s character is so amazing, my heart broke for her when Talon died, and reading this book from Wyn's side and Wyn's own story from her past was just riveting. I loved understanding Wyn more. Her experiences, emotions, and what made her into the woman she is today comes out in this book. There are sides to her that I did not really see in the previous books and I am so glad that I got to delve into her. I was also able to understand Thom's and her relationship a lot more than I did than in the previous books.

Then we jump to Ryland’s POV and the conflict between him and Jos as he literally fights with himself and the voice in his head that wants him to kill Jos, then he asks Wyn to take the piece out of his heart and then he begins to start feeling like himself towards the end of the book.

Sain was a mystery to me from the beginning, and I didn’t like him as Jos’s father from the time she met him, he just didn’t seem trustworthy, and now , I definitely don’t trust him.. He is up to no good !!! I hope someone catches on, I am so happy Jos doesn’t trust him... she feels it in her gut that something is off, I hope she goes with it...

The ending just took me by surprise that both these characters were working together?!?? REALLY?!?!?

Can’t wait to read the next book to find out what’s going on!! Thank God I don’t have to wait a month - or I would go nuts!!!

Definitely recommend!!!

I read the ‘revamped' version of this book and it doesn’t disappoint! I was intrigued when I realized the first part of the book was a recap of the last book but in different characters POV – while I was indeed skeptical at first I realized quickly that It wasn’t just a retelling it was adding valuable information that creates a more rounded story. I love getting to see the fight from different POV personally – I didn’t think I would but Rebecca writes it in such a captivating way t that it doesn’t seem like you rereading something from the previous book.

In this book we mostly have the POV of Wyn. However we do have POV from Ryland, Ovalia, and Jos. We see Wyn adjust to figuring out how to merge her ‘past’ life with her current one and continue to figure out the true Wyn that is a combination of both lives. Ryland – who has caused my heart to heart for most of the series – finally is given some well deserved peace within this story. And Ovalia …. well she is just as evil as we expected.

The person that through me for a loop this book is Sain – I really just need him to go find a hole somewhere and stay away from our beloved characters!

I am super excited to see what is next in this amazing world Rebecca has created!!

So I’ve given 5 stars to all the books in this series so far until this one. This one was a little slow for me, and while getting to see past scenes from other perspectives like Wyn’s and Rylands, I felt like some of the info wasn’t necessary & slowed the plot down. Also, I didn’t like getting to the ending point of the book before, then basically feeling like I was rereading that book, only from other perspectives for the first half or so of this book. I don’t mind a little going back into the story and clarifying here and there with the character perspectives, but when it feels like a lot of it is bonus material that’s not absolutely necessary to the plot, I found myself skimming through a good part of the first half of the book. Also, the lack of Ilyan front and center in this book was a bummer. Also, not that I’m wanting a sex scene in this book, but umm, Joclyn & Ilyan basically got married/bonded and still have not consummated their union yet... just waiting for that to happen. Ilyan’s only been waiting for 800 years, so. But other than those things, I liked the book but I need way more Joclyn & Ilyan and hope the rest of the books have them more front and center.

***Spoilers***

Okay, this book felt like an eternity to read. It wasn’t about the pacing at this point. My issues lie in the fact that I had four main perspectives and a total of seven to read through. I think what is falling short in this series for me is that I am so invested in Jos’s and Ilyan’s story line that I just want to wrap them up and read Wyn’s (and even Ryland’s) stories later on.

Now, getting more of Wyn’s recovery and mending of who she once was is really well done. I love her dynamic with Thom. The author does an amazing job with humanizing the male characters and making them emotionally vulnerable in a believable way.

Ryland finding a new (possible) love in Risha is interesting and it made me feel jealous that he was moving on. However, obviously Joclyn has so why shouldn’t he? I am hoping his journey runs parallel to how Joclyn’s went/is still going.

Also, was not expecting Sain to be playing the game and using everyone as pawns. Definitely a twist I wasn’t expecting.

Now that I’ve had a few days to think about this book... I have realized I still feel the same way. It is a MASSIVE disappointment. Like many others have said in their reviews, the first half is a repeat of events from the previous book. By the time it finally got to the new information, I was already so bored and fed up with the perspective changes that I hardly cared anymore.

Furthermore, there is barely any action in the book after Joclyn’s vision actually happens. It’s just a bunch of whining from Rhyland, angst from Wynn, and some more weird stuff about Sain. To be honest, it put me off the whole series. I’m sure I’ll finish it one day, but for now... I can’t promise that some other actually well-thought-out series with consistent organization won’t steal me away and leave Joclyn, Ilyan & co. stuck in a big Prague pimple.

Note to self: add pages to skip over if I ever come back to this series and have to reread some books as a refresher.

In this part of the story we get some insight into Ryland and Wynifred part until end of book 4. It’s interesting to get inside look on how both of them deal with hard time that was put on them recently, as well as their past. Both of them fighting theirs demons. And then the story continue, with disastrous attack of Vilys on Prague. With death and blood everwhere. With new dangers. And even worse. With treachery, treachery that comes not from where we expect and not as we thought. To understand what I’m taling about you will need to read a book, because there is no way I would tell you.

I just want to say that rating these books are very difficult! As a whole this series is a pretty amazing story but I do find that some books are better than others but you need to read each one to get the whole story!

This is the fifth book in the series and probably my least favourite. It is another book that fills in the gaps from the main story-you get the scenes from other characters perspective that throws things into light.

We are seeing Jocelyn starting to settle into her role and become more confident, Ryland is trying to be better and we can see a light at the end of the tunnel! I absolutely love the characters and I do feel invested in their lives-like they were my friends and I am still crushing hard on Ilyan!

The writing is pure magic and Rebecca Ethington has created a fantastic world in Imdalind. I highly recommend this series if your a fan of magic-especially faerie magic. I am re-reading this series and I must say I’m still enchanted by it and find new things that I missed/forgot from the first time.

I really love this series but I did not like all the repetitiveness. I mean seriously half or more than half was just retold from someone else's perspective. It was really boring to me. Then finally we got to a part of the story that was untold.
I hope the next installment is better than this.
Again the story line is great. I just could not re-read the same thing.

Okay, so the stuff we learned was good, but not in another book. This was mostly things that happened in the last book with a tiny bit of other. It’s disappointing. I enjoyed what we learned, but don’t feel like it was a books worth. I’m ready for something to happen and I no longer care for 6 perspectives.

I felt like the last book moved slowly, the story not progressing much. The first half of this one covers the same storyline as the last, just from a different character’s viewpoint. It made the story drag for me. The second half picked up the pace though. Hopefully the next one will keep things moving.

I'm really enjoying this story. However, this is book 5 and I'm surprised by the amount of errors it contains. Lots of misspelled words, missing words, the overuse of commas, and so much fluff at times it's hard to understand the sentence. If these books had a better proofreader/editor they would be a solid 5 stars. It's hard to enjoy a book when you're constantly reporting errors. Read in KU.

Prague

When they were a few minutes into the city all he'll broke loose with the release of the vilas. They bit and killed everyone. Dramin is bit and Thom is knocked senseless. Wyn is able to take the blade out of Ryland, it also has Rose's soul in it. Edmund had them trapped in the city. But Ilyan finds some of his people that survived.

Too Many Point of Views

I don’t care for Wyn’s, Ovailia’s, or any of the bad guys aside from Sain’s POV but I’m hoping Sain’s won’t be too much. Otherwise the story is amazing. Too many POV’s makes me unwilling to read more. I have to skip some of Wyn’s and Ovailia’s so I wouldn’t lose interest.

I don't know what it is but this book was a little more bitter than the rest of the series. I do not think I would have been so eager to buy it this had it been book 2of the series. But I am hopeful for the return of the spark in the next installment.

Burnt Devotion is a retelling of Soul of Flame for the first 60% of the book, but from other key characters' POV, namely Wyn and Ryland. The rest of the book picks up from the caves and brings us up to the foretold devastation of Prague and the betrayal that surrounds the group.
