There is really only one word to describe this set (Books 1 & 2 plus a prequel novella): masterful.

I cannot overstate how much I enjoyed reading these entries in the series. All of the elements that I look for were on point: world building was stellar, the characters were all well rendered and felt real, the pacing of the story was perfectly pitched, while the novels ended in a way that left the story continuing, they did resolve the primary thrust of the story arc. There are so many interesting elements to dig into!

To begin, I was very impressed with the world building. Enough was conveyed to understand the rules of the universe, but not in so much detail that I felt I was reading a history book. Still, the author has obviously put a lot of time and thought into the history of this world (as more is revealed in the second novel). I also appreciate that there is a well-developed spiritual element woven throughout the series. (In some fantasy novels, the element of spirituality is completely neglected, which always disappoints me).

The character development is also excellent. Even minor characters stand out as being unique and interesting in their own right. I think, with one exception, the author did a fantastic job of rendering three-dimensional characters. I hope that the lone exception will get an expanded treatment in later installments.

There were a few errors in editing - given the length of the work, I would say these were at a below average number. In particular, in the edition I read, there were several instances where a space between words was omitted. Also, rack/racking was used instead of (the correct) wrack/wracking. (This mix-up happened more than once).

I am very eager to continue reading in the series. It reminds me a lot of Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series - not so much in terms of plot/world style, but, rather, in terms of scope and breadth. It has been a long time since I've read a novel I've appreciated quite so much.

I received a copy of this book through Voracious Readers Only.

Oh my goodness, what a great series! I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this based on the cover, but it was an interesting mix of fantasy, magic , and adventure. Even with all the different characters, they were well developed and continued to grow in depth . My heart just broke with all the tragedies but there was hope written into the pages . Definitely would recommend this series !!
I received this from Voracious Readers Only in exchange for a review .
