I am so glad, i found that author. After reading the first book, i just had to go on, and now i ordered the next one, the last in the series, since it's not out yet. Brilliant read. I thought it was very good, how the author told the story from different perspectives of the people. It worked wonderfully.

A continuation of a very driven man, trying to find his lost family. Councilman or former Councilman Jarden Fairbanks used his amazingly vast wealth and personal contacts to secretly build a fantastic starship (Eureka) which he planned to launch through the Rift. This Rift only opened into the Solar System once every thirty years. Out of it had come the Watcher, an alien race that appeared to be hostile towards Humans. A plan was formed to send a colony ship of humans thru the Rift the next time it opened so humanity could establish a foothold somewhere else if these alien Watchers were successful in destroying Earth. Unbeknownst to Jarden, his wife took her and his two children on the colony ship and he watched as they slipped through the Rift, some thirty years ago.

Now Jarden and his companions consisting of a mishmash of people he knew would be useful and people he connived into helping him went through the Rift seeking his lost family. One such person was Benson. Benson had acted as Jaren's personal assistant for many, many years. He did everything for Jarden and pretty much was treated as the Councilman was. He had full reign of the starship, so when he decided to steal a special jump-capable starfighter, no one tried to stop him until it was too late. It will be interesting to read where he was headed.

In the meantime, Jarden and his crew found the colony planet that the colony ship (Pilgrim) was supposed to have landed on some thirty years past. Right off they knew something wasn’t right. Instead of getting sensor readings of a robust colony, they only got a fairly weak single coming from a lake. So, Jarden, Flint, Ace and a Security Guard named Bree, took off in a lander for the planet. Just after entering the atmosphere, the lander is attacked by a vast swarm of bugs. It causes the lander to go dead and Flint is forced to make a controlled crash landing. They have no radios or any kind of energy left on the lander. They then do the next best thing and that is to start hiking towards the lake and what Jarden hoped would be a great family reunion although the family he knew was now thirty years older.

Back on the Eureka, Dr. Wren Sando was working on a bioweapon that would hopefully destroy the Watchers. She even had a live Watcher in her lab aboard the Eureka whom she could test the virus on when it was perfected. The alien had been in captivity for the last thirty years and never said a word while in her lab. She knew it was highly intelligent since it’s kind had flown starship into the Solar System. Charles, the android that got Wren out of prison, was slowly trying to convince the alien Watcher to speak so he could learn it’s language. Dr. Sando wasn’t very far away from creating her virus, but she was still wondering if it was the right thing to do, i.e., killing an entire species.

Finally, the landing party made contact with some of the people from the colony ship Pilgrim only to have Jarden Fairbanks get shot in the leg. Turns out it was an accident, but that wasn’t the only surprise in store for Jarden, Flint, Ace and Bree.

This isn’t the end of the series. Book three, “Return” is already out and I’ve gotten it loaded in my Kindle. Good story and I’m very interested to see how it all ends.

This deserves the 5-Star rating I've given it BUT, only if you've read the first book in the series. Fortunately, for me, there was only a month between book one and book two. Otherwise, I would have had difficulty following the What & Why as well as the "Who's Who" of this second book. In my review of Book One, I had suggested, "...a "Who's Who" [or as some authors call it, a "Dramatis Personae"] is especially important for a detailed new book and equally for the next in a series when there has been some time between books in a series. A summary of prior events is also very helpful in subsequent books to a reader like me who reads a lot of books in the same genre." Both of these would be vital to any reader starting with Book Two and, as it was, I had to go back and re-read parts of Book one to catch-up.
Regardless, this is a great story as all of Nathan Hystad's books have been. I've read and reviewed every book in his six-book Survivor series and this series has the same outstanding feeling. While we are dealing with futuristic Science Fiction, the basic human emotions and motivations required for a great story are all here. The Good and the Bad.
I personally dislike what I call "HS Book-Report" style reviews that attempt to summarize the book. If that's what the prospecting reader is looking for, the author's do a better job than any reviewer could. There is a very interesting phenomenon here that I will comment on. There is a time-distillation issue where thirty years pass on the Earth-side of the Rift while only one year passes on the Alien-side. This makes for some interesting experiences when friends and relatives meet again when the Rift re-opens.

One reviewer said this should be a YA book and she/he was right. I, too, had to wonder how a 16 year old could be such an outstanding fighter pilot and had to continuously save one person or a group of people. AND how about Jarden who's 110 years old but he's in such a hurry to see his family, after 60 years, that he insists on taking off at a RUN in the dark, on a world that they just arrived on, having no idea what might be filled with aliens or killer animals. Other than that this was a decent book, but it could have been better AND it was another cliffhanger. Like so many others I'm tired of authors who leave a book to where you have to buy the next one to find out what happened. I'm not sure I'll read the last book since I'm sure the Earth kills all the Watchers, and I'm not sure it's worth my time to read another one about a kid who saves the world again and again.

No romance and no swearing. Definitely YA.

As for the narrators: Another reason why I'm not sure I'll listen to the next book. First of all there should never be more than one narrator to a book, if they are going to be doing the same voice. Now, we have 7 narrators and it was terrible! If they can't even try to sound masculine or feminine they should NOT call themselves narrators. Men sound like women and women sound like men! How can any of you call yourselves narrators?

The plot picks up where it left off at the end of the first book in the series, Rift. This time, the protagonists are on the other side of the Rift. Alone, they must find their lost colonists and somehow get back to Earth. The result is a high-stakes adventure involving an inhospitable alien world and a daring strike reminiscent of the WWII Doolittle Raid on Tokyo led by Admiral Halsey.

The two areas where I think this book outdid the first book in the series are in the portrayal of life on Domum and Benson. Benson’s captivity shines a light on the Watchers—their attitudes and objectives.

Another fun, easy read!

Received as an ARC, this is an honest review. After getting the Rift, Flint, Ace, Wren discover the whereabouts of a colony ship; finding time is different on either side of the Rift. Crashing down upon an alien world with destructive bugs and deadly animals. For one person, it proves a wonderful surprise. While some struggle to escape the planet- Wren and Charles work towards an end to the Watchers. We get a front row seat to all the highs, lows, unity, love and desire to survive. Adrenaline filled and deeply profound- Revenge is an excellent sequel to Rift.

If you like formulaic, predictable cliff hanger endings from one book to the next, regardless of whichever series you are reading. Then this author is for you. These are not stand alone books, so just be aware of what you're getting into. The stories are entertaining enough, though the character heavy stories can get muddling. I tend to enjoy the middle parts of the books but the beginnings can be long and slow, and the ending quick and without resolution. "I HAVE SPOKEN!"

Too long

The book could have been a lot shorter to get the story and plot across. Seems the author is fond of too many useless descriptive paragraphs. I had a really hard time believing a 16 year old character did all he did. Come on! This series should be in the YA catagory for sure.

A good read for you to enjoy.

A good read for you to enjoy. Ace and the rest of them give you a story that keeps you reading and thinking what's next or will they pull this off and who will survive and who we will loose. Enjoy the read and I hope you won't be disappointed I wasn't.

Book 2 is a hoot!

Can’t wait to read book 3. The Revenge set the stage for the a anticipated finish. If the conclusion to this series is as enthralling as the first 2 then this series should be considered for a screen play.

Thoroughly enjoyed this much awaited episode. Great imagination and story telling.
Nathan Hystad can write a good yarn and weave you right in with it, so you are routing for the characters and holding your breath as they do daring plans, barely and sometimes not escaping.

Great book. Good storyline. Development of characters consistent. Plan to read next volume, since there are four main plots and many subplots. You won’t be able to put book down.

Review of whole series: 4.5

All in all solid and very enjoyable story, fun writing, interesting plot and good twists. Not too predictable. A few plot holes that are "sort of" addressed, but aren't story ruining. A few ex deus machina's, but again, not story ruiners.

Definitely a recommend. Couldn't put them down and the short chapters and lots of POVs made for a very fun and easy read. Author did a solid job of writing in different voices (not easy to do, especially between male and female).

Book 1: 4 stars (long winded, but knowing there's two other books waiting makes it ok)
Book 2: 3.5 stars (classic middle book syndrome)
Book 3: 4.5 stars (fun wrap up)
