Secluded in her tiny village, Syren Elyota's only wish is to explore the world out she knows is out there. But - unfortunately for her - the day of her sixteenth birthday has arrived and what little chance she had of carrying out her dream has flown out the window. On that night, she would be gaining access to the magical balance - becoming an elemental and joining the workforce on one of the four life paths. It's her nightmare coming true.
She prayed that night - prayed to a goddess she didn't normally give a second thought. And on that night, the goddess Pax spoke to her. Evil magic has found its way to Kra, draining the magic that is already present. Her villagers are suffering, famine and heat a plague upon them all, and Syren fares no better than any of them - even though the goddess left her with odd marks and powers she can't fathom.
She's given the chance to leave the village by the High Scholar, to hone the powers he believes she would need to combat this evil. But there are more secrets to be found - as well as a girl in her dreams, a blue stone, a city that breeds wicked.
This was a fun read. Magic powers and awesome female characters!! Her descriptive writing is definitely a strength. This is a young, first time author and I’m excited to see her grow!
This book was so engaging and enjoyable to read, I can't but admire Marissa's writing skill and imagination. My favourite characters were Ava and Nikulas, but the protagonist, Syren is very easy to symphatize with. She's witty and empathetic, which is very charming character trait. The world building is amazing: The magic system is carefully thought and as magic is a part of the plot, interesting to read about. I wished for some lgbti+ visibility, so that's why Icouldn't give full 5 stars. Still I will totally read the second part when it comes out. I'm hooked.
