If someone had told me twenty years ago that I'd be the author of 20 books, I'd have fallen off my chair. I’m still amazed to see my novels on Goodreads, Amazon, and occasionally the shelves at Walmart.

More than anything, I delight in telling stories that tackle tough issues with faith and compassion. One my most challenging books, Together With You, won the RWA FHL Readers Choice Award for Best Contemporary Romance. I was equally thrilled when The Two of Us made it to the shelves in Target as part of the "Target Recommends" program.

Before writing contemporaries, I wrote westerns for Harlequin Historical and Love Inspired Historical. The LIHs are clean reads. The Harlequin Historicals (no brown banner like the LIHs) were written for the mainstream market. They have Christian themes but gritty content. Some readers won’t care for the language and love scenes. (If you want to know why I wrote them, the story is on my website.)

My two most recent books are independently published. When He Found Me and A Gift to Cherish are a mix of romance and women’s fiction and part of The Road to Refuge series. These stories are particularly close to my heart.

My husband and I now make our home in Lexington, Kentucky, but I’m a California girl at heart. I hope you enjoy my books! For more information, visit https://www.victoriabylin.com

Book No. 3 for 2019 . . . Yes, it's one of my own--my newest. I had to proofread it, so I'm counting it :) Actually, I read it twice. Can I count it twice? No, that would be cheating :)

EDITED TO ADD:
Yes, I love this story. If it eases one woman's heart and gives one man courage to live his convictions, even when it's difficult, then the story has succeeded. If it brings one person back to a place of peace, even better.

I hope you enjoy it :)

Insightful, raw and thought-provoking. When He Found Me is a beautifully, poignant story that illustrates God’s presence in our lives when we feel alone in our circumstances, and how His grace covers all of our failings and replaces them with life, love and freedom.

Bylin handles tough issues and questions with honesty and vulnerability, creating a powerful emotional impact and an uncertainty in the direction the story will take. The multiple POVs added depth and layers to the plot by creating an understanding of each key character and diminishing the opportunity to write them off based on their mistakes. The cast of characters are realistic, messy and undeniably broken individuals, which allowed me to deeply connect and relate to them. This book really spoke to my heart about forgiveness, love, kindness, trust and hope.

A truly satisfying story! Highly recommended!

Baseball player Shane Riley is on his way to Refuge, Wyoming, to take a teaching job while he recovers from his recent injury. On the way, he meets a woman in a laundromat who reminds him of his estranged sister, Daisy. The woman turns out to be Melissa Townsend, his new landlady.

MJ has nowhere to go. So she’s returned to Refuge with her son, Cody, because she’s recently inherited her grandparent’s house … and because she has nowhere else to go. She wants to sell the house, because her health benefits are about to run out, and she has a condition requiring ongoing healthcare.

When He Found Me is a brave novel that tackles issues not often seen in Christian fiction. MJ has HPV, a sexually transmitted disease contracted in the same one-night stand that gave her Cody. Now she’s staring in the face of a full hysterectomy before she turns twenty-five. No, that whole “it’s your body so you can do what you want” hasn’t exactly worked for her. But MJ has recently become a Christian, and is taking strength in God.

“Preacher Boy” Shane has given up on God since his accident. That presents an interesting and unique dynamic—the new Christian and the new backslider. Both have awkward histories: MJ with her health, and Shane with his sister, Daisy. It’s a strong cast of characters, and a well-plotted novel that covers sexual sin, abuse, and how Christians can inadvertently make things worse.

Recommended for Christian fiction readers who want a novel that deals with some real-life issues but focuses on the emotions and consequences rather than the (sinful) actions.

Wow, what an incredible story! I was sucked in from the first page and hated to put the book down! This review may be a bit on the short side, simply because I don't know if I can find the words to do this beautiful book justice. This story is told in alternating POV from the perspectives of MJ, her mother Olivia, Shane, and his sister Daisy, and I was captivated by all of their stories! This book has it all, tremendous depth, a lovely romance, forgiveness, reconciliation, characters that become like friends to the reader, a strong faith story, love, hope, new beginnings, I could go on and on! Words truly cannot express how much I loved this book! Without giving too much away I will just say that this is a book that everyone, especially every woman should read! I can't recommend When He Found Me highly enough, read it and your life will be impacted for the better! Such a wonderful, amazing read, and I can't wait for the next novel in the Road to Refuge series!
Note: While there is nothing graphic in this book, the subject matter is very raw and real. For this reason I don't recommend this one for readers under the age of 16.

This book will grab your attention, you won't want to put the book down. Shane has an injury that causes him to be unable to play baseball which also results in him distancing himself from God. MJ travels to Wyoming alongside her son Cody to sell her grandfather's house and use that money for herself and Cody. She has a virus that causes cervical cancer which will change her future. Shane rents MJ's garage and teaches in the school, MJ's mother is the principal there. Each character has a struggle which we get to experience through the book.

This is Christian romance, which is a genre I don’t have much experience with. It was mild and sweet while also delving into a lot of serious topics that come up in real life. Listened to it in a day.
2.5 stars

Plot- The plot more or less kept my interest.

Writing - Good. Definitely preachy but I didn’t mind too much. I thought it was even edifying at times. There was a lot to glean from the real life case scenarios depicted in the novel.

Characters- I liked both of the main characters. (The FMC especially showed a lot of grace toward her difficult mother, imo!)
There were also 2 side characters who got an occasional POV: Daisy (the MMC’s sister) and the FMC’s overbearing mom. I liked how the author let us glimpse into their minds. That was especially helpful for the FMC’s mom, who could have been painted as a villain. But when I walked in her shoes, she was actually trying to show her love. She just didn’t convey it well at all, but her heart wasn’t bad, and she had her own growth arc too.

Romance- There was some potential here, and they had medium/low-ish chemistry, but ultimately it was just meh for me. They each figured out that they loved the other person way too fast, when I thought their connection was just starting. I was not on board when they launched their love boat. I thought we were all eyeing the pier still, but I got left behind. ;)
Still, they were very sweet together.

Content-

Language- no swears
Spice- clean, although sex is a frequent topic. The FMC had a teen pregnancy and the MMC had lost his faith and was backtracking on his previous belief that sex should be reserved for marriage. Ultimately he regained his faith and his standards about sex, and they chose to wait for marriage.
Substance abuse- side characters showed up high on drugs or had a history of alcoholism.
Violence- side character was a victim of domestic abuse.
Cover- meh
POV- multiple POVs
Cliffhanger- no
Format- Audible
Narration- this was narrated by “virtual voice” which was actually not bad. Yeah, it got some inflections wrong, but I was rather impressed with how it did the female vs the male voices.

WHEN HE FOUND ME is one of those stories that is poignant as it touches on difficult life lessons and the faith, hope, and love that can carry us through. Readers will fall in love with these characters, cheer them on, cry with them, and wish for them. A heartfelt read from the first page to the last.

From the first page I knew that this story was special. It begins with these characters at a point when they're struggling to figure out their lives. That struggle continues throughout the book as they wrestle with their dreams, reality, opening their hearts, and trusting in God.

I loved these characters so much! How I adored MJ and Cody! This dear little family and their very real struggles with what life has thrown at them. I could relate to MJ as a mother and how she tries to reconnect with her own mother, trust in her faith, and work through a situation that stemmed from one mistake. The heartbreak. Then there's Shane... he is equally tortured, but in a different way. He's lost his faith and his dreams, but sometimes dreams change. I loved what one of his baseball buddies said to him... "Christians don't retire. They get lost, and they get found. They get knocked to their knees, and they stand up again." That same theme of being lost and found plays out in the lives of the other secondary characters as well. I loved how Shane would be tempted to do something and then MJ or Cody would somehow get in the way. Shane's such a good, good guy, but he doesn't see it. He sees how he's failed and how he's lost his dream and his concerns. MJ and others help him see that he is much more than that.

I love it when characters are so easy to relate to and when the story is written in such a way that there is no hope of you not getting your heart involved. No matter how you try to resist. This is definitely the case here. There are some serious issues discussed in this story. Sleeping around, drugs, drinking, abuse, rape, STDs, self-righteousness, death... But then there is also friendship, family, forgiveness, faith, healing, miracles, and love. It's one of those books that has all the feels, and I mean all of them. You will laugh, cry, and swoon. In the end, you will feel joy and happiness for what these characters have endured and God's love that has been there through it all.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a tough read in so many ways, but it made the good and sweet things that much better. It's a story that will tug on your heart, leave you happily satisfied, and wanting to do better in your own life. I loved it!

Content: Some difficult/mature subject matter and violence (all applicable to the story).

'Why did people have to hurt? Why did Almighty God make dreams come true and snatch them away?'

Victoria Bylin has written a book that will grab your interest and cause you to become deeply invested in her story. Shane Riley was once a strong Christian. Then an injury to his knee resulted in him not being able to play professional baseball anymore and he drifts so very far away from God. He is trying to find his little sister who was removed from the foster home that sheltered them both. He has talked viciously to her and needs to make it right, but it seems as if she has fallen off the earth.

MJ Townsend is on her way to Refuge, Wyoming with her son Cody to try and sell her grandfather's house to earn money to keep her and Cody alive. She is also battling a relentless virus that causes cervical cancer, one that has the potential to destroy, if not her life, then all her dreams for the future.

Somehow, these two meet and Shane rents MJ's garage apartment and begins teaching in the school where MJ's mother is the principal. Another sore spot of a relationship for her. MJ also soon discovers a link to Shane's sister.

More than one character in this story is struggling with a life altering problem and deep rooted pain. All have made choices at one time in their life that have caused them to regret their words and actions. These choices have affected their lives in ways they wish were not there, but regret causes these mistakes to take on a life of their own. However, there is one light that can shine through even the darkest of lives and bring back joy to any life. That is Jesus Christ and Bylin has allowed that light to shine brightly in this book. Expect tears to fall and your heart to rejoice when reading this one. And there is at least one more to come! I can't wait for Daisy's story. Bravo! Highly recommended.

Have you ever read a story that grabbed your attention from the very beginning, and you found yourself longing for more each time you had to put it down because real life got in the way? That is exactly how I felt reading this. Bylin writes a beautiful story about realistic situations. There is sin, pain, forgiveness, mistakes, and yes even topics that some readers may gasp at because it is found in Christian fiction. But this is real life people. Mistakes are made in the real world - we're only human after all. And Bylin by no means does not glorify these mistakes in any way. Instead, she uses them as teachable moments throughout the entire book, and gives readers hope and encouragement that they will be able to move past their own mistakes.

MJ and Shane are clearly meant for each other right from the start. The thing I like about them the most is their need for growth and answers before either is comfortable moving forward with some sort of relationship. Yes, there is chemistry - cue the sweet kissing scenes! But they don't let it get too far, even Shane, who I questioned whether or not he would try something. They both had pain that they needed to let go of. They both had pasts that haunted them, and needed to be honest with each other about. Ultimately God's ability to forgive and extend grace was shown in such a wonderful way - really in three separate story lines. Bylin has an extraordinary talent in pulling everything together, putting a reader in an emotional trance, and holding you close until the very end.

With swoony scenes, an adorable little boy who steals the scene every now and then, and a remarkable lesson to learn, When He Found Me is a story that will stick with me for a long time. I cannot wait to read other stories from this talented author! I was given a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Yes, why do people have to hurt and why does God allows things to happen?
I think He does it so that we will turn to Him and lay out burdens at His feet.
Sometimes bad things happen in life and we tend to get so angry at God. I know, I've been there and done that. I'm getting better.
I understood Shane's pain and I found myself praying that he'd get out of the rut he was in.
MJ is a pretty swell person.
My emotions were all over the place in this book. I hollered, I rooted, and I hurt for these people in the story. This was just an awesome story all the way around.
All of us come short of the Glory of God. We all have unwanted secrets that we want to keep hidden. But it's really not good to do that. You see, they tend to eat us up on the inside and then sometimes we become bitter because we can't forgive the person or people who wronged us or think wronged us.
We need forgiveness in order to give us a sense of peace and learn how to get along with others.
Yes, it's hard to forgive believe me. I know. I've been there.
Yes, I've gotten angry at God but I've learned that no matter what He's always there for us. He never leaves us or forsakes us just because we have accidents happen, or when people tease or make fun, or whatever the case is.
I like Bylin's style of writing. I love how her stories pull you in at the beginning and never let you go until the book is finished. This one will also leave you thinking about the characters long after you're finished with the book.
I really loved this one. I highly recommend it.

Bylin's raw authenticity gifts readers with genuine and honest characters who encounter realistic struggles and conflict. Faith plays an important role in the story without resorting to a sterile, predictable plot. Many readers are sure to learn something new as I did.

This isn't a "feel-good warm and fuzzy" read but it is a "you ought to read it because it will help you grow" kind of read or maybe even an "if you're going through tough stuff, know you aren't alone" kind of read. Regardless, it's a story well spent as long as you're not craving a fluffy escape from reality.

It is my hope that authors continue to write brave stories such as this one and readers continue to read and learn from them. This life we live is messy and by understanding other people's perspectives and experiences, we can grow more empathetic and be more effective in ministering to one another.

Shatter the Glass Balls and Set the Seagulls Free!

I wasn’t ready for this book to end! Great character development, I felt like I really got to know MJ inside and out. And Shane, what a special man he is, fighting his own battles, yet able to humble himself and pour out his love to MJ and Cody. Through a series of letters MJ discovers in the attic, she finds a renewed faith which leads to reconciliation with past family issues. And the story of Daisy, Shane’s sister and her abusive relationship, is both heart-warming and heart-wrenching, but you want to keep rooting her on! The author has cleverly woven the alphabet game throughout which creates a fun continuity.

I would highly recommend this enjoyable, yet inspirational novel; I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!

If you’re looking for a book with real characters who have made real mistakes and struggle with the consequences, sometimes years later, look no further. In When He Found Me, Victoria Bylin delves into the messiness of poor choices, of bad and difficult things happening to good people, and questions about why God doesn’t take those hard things away from his children.

Even though Shane is struggling with his faith, it’s obvious from the first pages that this man has a good heart. MJ is a brand-new Christian learning to lean into God’s strength, but sometimes fear wins that battle and she gets stuck in her own head.

Bravo to Bylin for diving into several issues in this story—lost dreams, consequences of sex before marriage, and domestic abuse are just a few. Like the letters that four women find comfort in for different reasons, this book will speak to different areas to readers, meeting them wherever they are in their lives.

My fingers are crossed that Daisy gets a starring role in the next Road to Refuge book because this is a woman who deserves to be loved well.

I honestly have no idea what to say without giving away any spoilers! This book was hands down one of the most real, honest, and heart-felt contemporaries I’ve read in a while. I can’t even begin to explain all the emotions I experienced while reading it, but I can say this: I laughed, I cried (a lot), and a little bit of everything else in between. This book hits you THAT DEEP. You go from heartache, shame, guilt, pain, unworthiness, doubt, and fear to: forgiveness, love, grace, acceptance, healing, and freedom. I felt like I was right there with characters going through every single thing they were while also simultaneously feeling like a fly on the wall just watching (or in this case reading) everything happen without having any sort of control of what was next.

I also really appreciate the fact that Victoria made the characters so realistic that I didn’t automatically fall in love with any of them. I had the chance to get to know them and watch them grow. I got to see their strengths and weaknesses, their fears and doubts, and most importantly, their humanness. I had the chance to get to know them as if they were real people and I guess in a way they are. They represent people we met everyday. They represent you and me, and it’s because of this very fact that makes the book so good.

Victoria Bylin’s When He Found Me is a powerful and emotional read that will hit readers square in the chest. Throughout the story, perspective alternates between of several different characters, mostly women. This is a story about hardship, heartbreak, personal struggle and growth, forgiveness, family, friendship, and love. It’s filled with so many emotions that will leave readers grinning for one moment, takes them to angry in another moment, and brings them to tears in yet another moment. This story is filled with sensitive and hard issues, but Bylin handles perfectly, as well as from a Christian perspective. This story has mature content and would could be rated as PG-13 if it were made into a movie. Readers will love this emotional rollercoaster of a ride in this beautiful women’s fiction story.

When He Found Me by Victoria Bylin is such an incredible story, but it isn’t for the faint of heart. If it was a movie I’d rate it PG-13 because it has mature themes, frank discussion of adult desires and the main characters’ sexual pasts, and derogatory language in reference to someone’s morals. There are also descriptions of assault that could be a trigger for some readers. All of this makes for a very raw, very realistic story about the ways that we struggle with life choices.

Single mom MJ is struggling to keep her head above water when she moves back to her hometown of Refuge, Wyoming. Through a series of miscommunications she ends up with an injured professional baseball player, Shane Riley, renting the apartment above her garage. I’m a huge fan of meet-cutes, and this one really stood out from the others, tugging at my heartstrings!

Shane Riley is working as a high school teacher, biding his time until he’s healed enough to return to the major leagues. Feeling guilty and jaded, he no longer views himself as a Christian. MJ, on the other hand, has just found her faith in God and is trying hard to make good choices and avoid complications. When they come together the sparks really fly, but both of them are hiding secrets from their pasts that they feel are insurmountable.

As is usually the case in these situations, while I read this story my impatient brain was yelling, “Just tell him/her already!” Books are such great teachers, though. True to life, the characters have their own reasons and their own timing for figuring things out, and the ending is adorably perfect for the story!

One quick note: I’m not very familiar with the medical condition discussed in the book so I can’t tell you if it’s portrayed completely accurately. However, I can tell you that it’s a very sweet story, and I’m excited to read more from Victoria Bylin.

I received a copy of this book from the author and am under no obligation to provide a positive review. All opinions are my own.

When He Found Me is one of those rare books that touched me to the core. It's an emotional love story on a number of levels, between a man and a woman, a brother and sister, a mother and child, but overall it's the story of God's love for all of us.

When He Found Me doesn't shy away from exposing the reality of modern day issues, alcohol and domestic abuse, unwed pregnancy and abortion, STI's and their treatment, but Bylin handles them all with a delicate hand of honesty and grace always pointing the way to where true healing can be found.

Her characters are real, flawed and broken in every way possible, physically, emotionally and spiritually. They endure the consequences of both their own choices and those of others, wondering where God is in the process. Bylin has expertly woven in the Gospel message amid all her characters life experiences, providing a truly fine example of sharing God's truth with a hurting world. Even the series title, Road to Refuge, has a depth and weight of meaning, as God is our Refuge.

There are plenty of lighthearted and funny moments that keep the story from feeling too heavy while dealing with very serious topics. Some of the funniest moments are Shane's salmon references, particularly "I'm no one special. Just a guy who envied salmon." It has to be read in context, but it's hilarious.

Victoria Bylin has written an important story for our times that will challenge the reader to more deeply contemplate what they believe about others, themselves and God. Simply put, When He Found Me is a stunning and powerful work of fiction from a persuasive and talented writer. I could not have loved it more!

"Like Humpty Dumpty, he'd had a great fall. Unlike Humpty Dumpty, God had put him together again, albeit with a few cracks to keep him humble."

This is the first book by Victoria Bylin that I have read and I am berating myself for having missed such heart-wrenching, emotionally raw, yet so spiritually uplifting writing until now. The author tackles some serious issues in this book by honestly looking at addiction, self-worth, broken marriage, and being fatherless through the eyes and hearts of devastated and hurting characters. Though it is not a light read, the plot moves quickly and involves more than just the two main characters MJ and Shane - it also includes MJ's mother Olivia and Shane's half-sister Daisy who bring different hurts and pains into the storyline but all are drawn to that One Hope who defies all circumstances and evil.

MJ, a sweet, gentle, kind but stubborn single mother, returns home to Wyoming with her young son to sell her grandfather's old home to get a boost in life. She is a new Christian, still trying to figure out what it means to follow Jesus daily as she struggles financially. Shane, a freshly injured major league baseball player, finds himself in the same small town in Wyoming as a substitute high school history teacher. Though he's been a Christian for some time now, his bitterness, anger and sense of injustice drive him away from the faith of his prosperity though he can't help but be thoughtful, caring, charming, and loyal even in his state of emotional and spiritual darkness.
Daisy, Shane's sister, has hit the bottom of her wretched life and wonders what more is left. Olivia, MJ's mother and Shane's boss as the high school principal, is caught up in her sense of self-righteousness and self-reliance. These four characters are drawn in to discover a life of forgiveness, healing, hope and unconditional love through a set of old letters and a diary from MJ's ancestors that are found in the attic. This book is more than just romance; it's an eye-opening, heart-changing spiritual journey that will stay with you long after the book has been put down. I'm impatiently waiting for the second book in the series!

There are many sensitive subjects mentioned in When He Found Me and this certainly can't be labeled as chicklit but it is a story that will touch your heart and remain in your memory. Shane Riley and Melissa June "MJ" Townsend have both suffered deep hurts and they both feel like they have failed. Shane's successful career as a baseball player has been cut short by an injury, he's lost touch with his younger sister Daisy and he has basically turned his back on God; MJ is struggling to make ends meet while she raises her son alone, her relationship with her mother is very strained and, to top it all off, MJ knows that she has a virus that could cause her to develop cervical cancer. They are two people in need of a friend but what are the odds that their chance encounter in an laundromat could develop into friendship or that this friendship could deepen into something else?

"MJ" and Shane have a great story to tell but there are actually four points of view shared in When He Found Me. The thoughts of MJ's mother Olivia and Shane's sister Daisy are also shown throughout this book and I was especially drawn to Daisy. We learn the hard life that Daisy has experienced and we watch her change; I fully sensed her doubts and I was overjoyed with her conversion.

When He Found Me features faith and hope; estrangement and reconciliation; and many kinds of love. There is romantic love, love of family and love for our fellow man. There is also the reminder that the ultimate, most complete love comes from God and that forgiveness is available for all who seek Him. One of my favorite lines sums it up:

"Father God, you know everything about us, yet you love us just as we are..."

When He Found Me is a beautiful story with wonderful, multifaceted characters, faith and the promise of redemption. As I read it I realized that the title applies to more than just one human finding another! I highly recommend this book and I look forward to reading what Victoria Bylin has for the next book in the Road to Refuge series!

I received a digital copy of this book and I voluntarily chose to share my review.

In the minority on this one...the setup was too coincidental for my taste and the relationship between MJ and Shane felt forced and cringey.

A pure case of judging a book by its cover. That’s what I encountered when I picked up When He Found Me by Victoria Bylin. The catchy font, title, and colorful graphics led me to believe this book would be a fun chick lit/romance. Oh, I got women’s fiction and a love story alright, but the real prize was finding a thoughtful portrayal of life in all its ugliness . . . and beauty. When He Found Me is raw in its emotions and candid in its exploration of the consequences of our choices for ourselves and others. I rate this well-written story highly recommended.

There are a couple of story lines that are woven together in When He Found Me. The relationship between baseball player turned history teacher, Shane Riley, and single mom MJ forms the foundation of the book. Their romance is complicated by a number of obstacles that are not the run-of-the-mill problems most often found in Christian fiction. Shane has given up on God and is ready to embrace some of what he thinks he has been missing, and MJ, a new Christian, is finding her way with a potentially heartbreaking diagnosis. Running parallel with the main story line, Olivia, MJ’s mother is looking for a renewed relationship with her daughter. And Shane’s sister Daisy’s story — alcoholism, abuse, and abortion — is one not often found in CF. God’s healing, restoration, and redemption shines bright in the true-to-life circumstances all of the characters face. This book is REAL! I loved that about it. No sugar-coating, just life in all of its sordidness and a God Who continues to surprise with his mercy and grace . . . and miracles. The author doesn’t shy away from the reality of human relationships, but neither does she downplay the impact of straying from God’s plans. A packet of letters and a diary from the past play a large role in the faith journeys of the female characters — I loved how the story of a woman from long ago taught faith, hope, and salvation.

When He Found Me is book 1 in Bylin’s Road to Refuge series. It is an excellent start and points to more great books. I can’t wait!

Highly Recommended.

Refuge, Wyoming, a small, close knit town where Shane Riley retreats to heal from an injury that sidelined him from professional baseball, hopefully temporarily. Using a real estate agent, Shane rents a house, sight unseen, for six months while he works at restoring and repairing his injured knee. It is a beautiful home, well taken care of and fully furnished, all he needs is food.

MJ, Melissa June, Townsend is traveling to Refuge, Wyoming with her young son after losing her job and inheriting her grandfathers property; yes, the same place Shane has just signed a contract to lease for six months. Neither MJ or Shane have any knowledge of the other and surprises abound upon meeting each other at the realtors office. After some discussion the two decide that MJ and her son will take the house while Shane rents the over-the-garage apartment.

When MJ’s young son discovers that Shane Riley is “that” Shane Riley, the famous pro ball player, he begs for lessons from the pro. Soon lessons turn to trips to the local park to supper around the family table.

The attraction between Shane and MJ is almost immediate, but each have plans that do not include any romantic entanglements. Shane is determined to get back out on the field, plus he is searching for his sister who he treated wrongfully when they were both young. MJ has her own issues, including a secret that keeps her from ever considering any kind of romantic relationships. Yet, Shane and MJ have something in common, something each are completely unaware...MJ has an interesting tie to Shane’s sister.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel by Victoria Bylin and am looking forward to more in the Road to Refuge Series.

Thank you to Victoria Bylin and Just Read Tours for this book! #partner
Shane Riley is a baseball player who lost his career (and faith) during a freak car accident. He is motivated & driven to return to the game that he loves, but decides on a change of scenery for a semester and takes a job teaching in Wyoming. On his way, he meets Melissa June "MJ" Townsend, a single mom with a lovable and wild son, Cody. MJ is fighting her own demons - she is battling the virus that causes cervical cancer, and is unsure about what her future will look like. A miscommunication results in Shane renting MJ's garage apartment, and they become friends. Shane is there for her son, and is there to support her when she needs it. Could she possibly fall in love with him, knowing that she may not be able to have more children? Could he possibly fall in love with her when he is still trying to make a baseball comeback & is trying to find his lost sister (and repair their relationship)?
I thought this was a really sweet book. The characters were completely relatable and I loved seeing their stories unfold. They dealt with some really hard issues - HPV & cervical cancer, sports injuries, careers & dreams ending, domestic violence, and single parenthood. Victoria Bylin wrote it so well! It never felt like it was too much, and she really brought the characters to life. I loved MJ and Shane's story, and the redemption that they both experienced. God was very much at the center of this book (without it being too over the top). I also loved that there was another side story, with Shane's sister, Daisy. I definitely want to read the rest of this series!

With captivating characters and amazing story lines, this is one of Victoria Bylin’s best books yet! The characters and the story drew me in from the very beginning. These people are real, with real issues, struggling to make sense of their lives, failures and relationships with family, friends and lovers, past, present and whatever lies ahead. All of the main characters have, at some point in their lives, strayed away from the straight and narrow of Christian living and suffered the consequences of their mistakes—some more than others.

Shane and MJ, along with MJ’s little boy Cody, meet by chance, followed by a series of fortuitous events that keep the attraction growing stronger even after they learn about each other’s dark secrets of the past. Shane’s sister Daisy has her own tale of youthful indiscretions, which is partly responsible for her estrangement from Shane. All is wrapped up beautifully in the end, rich in symbolism, and with an added bonus of MJ’s discovery of late 19th century letters in her grandfather’s attic. I love how the author shares these letters with the reader as MJ gradually reads them all throughout the story. I found the effect those letters had on some of the characters very intriguing. This book is quite an emotional ride!

Some topics in this story deal with human sexuality and may be considered offensive to sensitive readers. However, the issues are so much a part of being human, and the author handles them all with kid gloves and absolutely no gratuitous descriptions. I highly recommend When He Found Me.

Rating 4.5 stars!

The protagonist, Shane Riley was a professional baseball player until his knee was injured in a car accident.  Shane has lost contact with his sister, Daisy, and has no idea where she is or what kind of life she's living. He feels like he has failed... that he should have been watching over his sister but he didn't.  Shane feels like God has failed him by allowing his accident to happen, which then caused him to be knocked him off of the baseball team. He's going to leave Los Angeles and head out to Refuge, Wyoming until he recovers.

Melissa June “MJ” Townsend has had a hard time getting by as a single mother, but she does her best for her little boy, Cody. She is going home to sell the house her grandfather left her hoping that the money will help get her back on her feet. Your heart will go out to this single mother as you admire her determination to make it on her own.

When He Found Me addresses some real issues of today - domestic abuse, unwed pregnancy and abortion and alcohol.  It's also an emotional love story on many levels - between a man and a woman, a brother and sister, a mother and child.  Overall, When He Found Me is the story of God's love for all of us.  They all have regrets in their lives but find there is forgiveness for their mistakes.

When I picked up When He Found Me, I thought I was going to be reading a light, fun, and possibly funny romance. (This is because I obviously paid more attention to the whimsical cover than to the book's description 🤣.) What I found, though, was a surprisingly deep and heartwarming story about love, forgiveness, and faith. It also made me do the ugly cry at one point, so there's that ...

The story is told in alternating points of view between MJ, Shane, MJ's mother Olivia, and Shane's sister Daisy. Each of these characters has a compelling story, though I must admit being partial to MJ's story. She's dealing with weighty issues, including HPV, a strained relationship with her mother, and single parenting. Throw in a burgeoning relationship with former baseball player Shane, and she has a lot to handle!

My favorite aspect of the novel revolved around letters MJ found in the house she inherited. Written to "Little Miss," they're letters from a father to his prodigal daughter. MJ, Olivia, and Daisy all read them, and they serve as a catalyst for change in each woman's life. Also, Little Miss's story is a great one in its own right.

When He Found Me deals with some serious issues, like STI's, abusive relationships, rape, and abortion. There are also some frank discussions about sex and desire. But everything is handled tastefully, and the novel comes from a clearly biblical perspective. I'd say it's not for young girls, but it's perfectly appropriate for women. I loved every second I spent reading When He Found Me, and I can't wait for the next book in Bylin's Road to Refuge series!

Victoria Bylin is an author who has become a must-read author for me, as soon as I see that she has a new book out I have to read it!
Victoria's latest novel, "When He Found Me," is the start to a brand new series, Road to Refuge, and it was an excellent start and I am ready to read more! MJ is moving back to her hometown to get her grandfather's home which was left to her ready to sell as she needs the money as a single mother. As if this was not enough she is also dealing with the possibility of having a major surgery that would end her chances of ever having any more children. A chance meeting at the laundromat on her journey home with her son turns into so much more when she learns that her home has been rented to this kind stranger. Shane is recovering from an accident that has changed his life course as he was a pro baseball player and is now going to be a teacher. Needing an apartment close to the gym is the answer to what he needs and it doesn't hurt that that he is intrigued and interested in MJ. However, Shane is also dealing with some hurt and loss in his own life and has been pulled away from God in the process.
MJ and Shane are both great main characters who are both struggling with things in their lives, but also great examples for keeping hope and moving forward. I love that the author does not gloss over issues, but she presents them just as they are, in all the ugliness that comes with them. This is a story filled with all kinds of relationships and the good and bad that comes with them, as well as the healing that can take place. This is such a wonderful, and emotional story that I completely enjoyed and was left feeling hopeful for the characters.

When He Found Me is a touching story with real people, their problems and mistakes! Shane is a wonderful protagonist who was a professional baseball player until his knee was injured in a car accident. Shane has lost contact with his sister, Daisy, after he lost his temper the last time he saw her. MJ is almost down to her last dollar when Shane sees her and her young son with his worn out shoes in a laundromat during a road trip. Your heart will go out to this single mother as you admire her determination to make it on her own. They all have regrets in their lives but find there is forgiveness for their mistakes. You will find someone you can relate to in this amazing book by Victoria Bylin. I recommend this contemporary book to everyone! I received a complimentary e-book from the author. This is my honest opinion.
