Princess of Sky, Earth, Fire, and Water was an interesting book to dive into. It wasn't something that I honestly knew was on my TBR until recently. Which, in a way, kind of worked out for me because it ended up working out for some of the challenges I'm in.

In it, you will meet Aisling. Due to her parents untimely death, she finds out a family secret and becomes commander to the fleet. It's a lot of power if you think about it but she doesn't hesitate to jump into this mission/adventure thrown upon her either. Which is probably why I liked Aisling so much. She was stubborn and committed to following through on her father's plans.

The only thing I didn't like was how easily she could use her new magic that she never knew about. The letter mentioned practice as much as you can.. but the girl doesn't even do that. She just kind of goes into what she wants and the magic works. A little unrealistic if you are asking me and I would have liked to see her struggle a bit more.

Besides her, you get to meet the Prince Drayaen. I wouldn't necessarily call it love at first sight or insta-whatever. Mostly because it just didn't feel like that. Yeah, they had some weird feelings after they met but at least they said I love you's towards one another at the end of the book. Even though I think they should know a bit more about one another before jumping into bed or marriage. But details.

Other than that, this book had a lot of betrayal with little twists and turns for me. It was kind of easy/predictable to see who was behind what. Or maybe it's the three cups of coffee I've had to today which is helping me see things a bit more clearly. Who knows?

In the end, I'm intrigued enough to see how their next mission goes. So I will definitely be jumping into the sequel when I can.

Well written novel about a strong willed female main character named Aisling who discovers she has inherited magical power to control the elements of nature. She learns to use her powers as she sets out on a journey to fulfill the obligations required to keep those powers. As the commander of a fleet of merchants ships, she travels to Asia where she meets up with the Fifth Prince who is in need of her skills to help defeat a group of usurpers who have long been planning to dethrone the Prince's father, King Yi.

I love how Aisling uses her talents to help the Prince to root out the enemies who have infiltrated the palace along with those who have betrayed the King. She is a very capable and smart commander even without her powers and has the loyalty of all her men. There is action, battles, intrigue, mystery, and some romance. The story held my interest throughout the book. Well done.

There was so much unrealized potential in this storyline, but I had a difficult time with the POV (point-of-view) shifts between characters and lack of worldbuilding. The author was real descriptive about minor sensory things, but this made it obvious when she skipped over details in the scene. Also, some conflicts felt too easily resolved, which made some good build-ups anticlimactic. The dialog felt rushed, lacking pauses and breaking between switches of subject-- too much telling, and not enough pulling the reader into the action.

This had a lot of potential, but the transitions between pov are non existent, the romance feels contrived and everything seems too easily overcome. Frankly it all felt flat. Perhaps more character development is in order

A beginning

At the death of her father and mother ,Aislin is given a mission and told a little about her new powers. This book can be read alone or as an introduction to a series. The characters and plot will keep you reading.

I am not quite sure what to make of this book. I certainly enjoyed elements of the plot. So long as you suspend disbelief and fully buy in to the fantasy/magical aspect, the idea of such an Irish girl of those times being a commander of a fleet of merchant ships that go all over the world won't rub you the wrong way—though perhaps it would have been better if the author had created a true fantasy world since this one is so different from reality. Aisling is a strong character, though I didn't feel that her character arc was explored as much as it could have been. What I found more trying in this book included an at times dizzying head-hopping point of view and some rather dense sensory descriptions that I felt slowed down the pace of the action without adding really much to the story. For the latter, the way the author did it felt more like telling than showing, using lots of adjectives and adverbs describe a thing or an action (even rather minor ones, which made it feel like dense prose). For the former, the at-times rapid shifts of point of view were very distracting. Sometimes, the point-of-view character shifted within a paragraph, and I never like that. Interestingly, despite the dense description in the narrative portions, the dialogue was usually written almost in screenwriter format, meaning it was just dialogue line after dialogue line with no attribution or associated actions. Sometimes the lack of attribution made it hard to remember which character was talking. And I do like associated action with dialogue at times so I can visualize the conversation taking place; otherwise, it just feels like talking heads on a blank screen.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

This is the first installment in a young adult fantasy series the follows Aisling, a young woman with the power to control sky, earth, fire, and water who also inherited her own fleet of ships and army. Sounds like a really great concept for a series about a strong willed, kick butt warrior princess. Unfortunately, for me, that's not what I got from this book. What I did get was characters who needed more development and points of view that jumped around at awkward moments. Aisling discovers she has this magical legacy, starts using the magic, and it doesn't seem to phase her on an emotional level. There was no build up to her using her magic the first time. When she did use it, it seemed as simple as doing everyday things like getting out of bed in the morning. The romance between the two characters was really rushed. The world building was lacking. There was a lot of potential for this book, but this wasn't quite delivered due to everything that was lacking. Very curious to see if things improve with the second book.

I received a copy of this book through Hidden Gems Books.

The premise is sound, but the format and presentation were lacking for me. My chief complaint is that the switch between character's perspectives was not clearly separated. No page break; just a single line down, no indent. That made following the switches needlessly difficult.
My second complaint is with lack of detail for, what I feel, are key points. For example, the death of her parents, the inheritance of her powers, and a months long sea voyage is all glossed over. How did she know the key was functional? How did she find the secret study? Is the knife also the wand? She learned to use a pocket dimension before anything else?? What is the point of the wizard??? Her father could have left that advice.
The premise had potential, but the execution fell short. Flesh it out, in the right story-progressing ways, and it could be 4 Star.

Princess of Sky, Earth, Fire and Water jumps right into action, pulling this reader into a wild adventure with Aisling, the young daughter of Lord Bailey ,who has a mission to accomplish in 12 months. She has only her newly revealed power to employ the sky, earth fire and water to help her in the extreme mental and physical challenges that await her.
This book has all the elements that I like: travel to distant lands, a bit of supernatural and a believable heroine who is brave, honest and straightforward.
I am happy to discover this book is the first of a series. I'll be checking out #2 !

A good start to a new series. I really enjoyed the characters of Aisling and her Fifth Prince. However, I feel like poor Aisling could use a lot more instruction with her powers. She's been thrown into the "fire" with really no clues or assistance - poor planning on the part of her father, I say. And anytime there was any sort of dialogue between characters, it got confusing. But there is definitely good bones for the future series provided in this book. I will definitely look for future books.

I received a free ARC of this novel via Hidden Gems in exchange for an honest review. My opinion is my own.

This is the first novel in a set of three. I see a lot of potential in this series. This book itself almost felt like a novella because I found that the story unfolded really quickly. The plot and character development lacked the depth that would have made this story feel more complete. The romance part also felt rather forced. I hope that changes in the next story.

I honestly thought I'd enjoy this, but I couldn't get even halfway. It felt like I was reading the first draft. Writing is absoulutely terrible, characters are flat, I had no idea what the plot even is... I'm just sad it wasn't what I expected. Even though I could tell less than 50 pages in it would be a 1 star, I decided to see it through. Ended up putting down before the hundred page mark.

A sweeping, magical adventure, Lady Aisling’s journey from noblewoman to elemental princess is packed with intrigue, romance, and danger. I loved the mix of historical settings with fantasy powers, and the blend of court politics, secret societies, and fierce love kept me turning pages. A strong start to the Princess of Nature series for fans of YA fantasy with a historical twist.

Princess of Sky, Earth, Fire and Water

There were a few areas in the book that didn't seem to flow. But the story line is quite interesting and I am looking forward to see how Aisling grows and controls her powers.

A great read with a strong female captain, which isn't the most common. The story lines can be a bit jostled, but certainly some intriguing developments and just enough suspense to stay engaged.

This story has me highly conflicted. I actually really like the premise and the characters in this book. I find Aisling to be a strong heroine and the Prince to be a complimentary hero. That said, there are some big writing flaws within the story. The prose is difficult to ignore and the dialogue is stilted and without nuance. I would find myself engrossed in the story only to been jerked out it if by the stilted and simplified writing. It almost felt like it was a translation from another language. The storyline is overly simplified and for a fantasy novel it lacks enough fantasy elements. I think it would make for a really good pre-teen book.

Now that I’ve said all of that, I actually still kind of liked it. Enough that I’ll be reading the sequel. Seems strange I know but even with the weird dialogue I liked the characters.
