A ghost-seeing teen goth and her friends confront an evil preacher and an ever-growing mob of spirits in the second book of the Sam the Spectator series – a spooky and humorous supernatural mystery set in 1990s West Texas.
There are too many ghosts in Bluebonnet, Texas. No one knows why they’ve come or when they’ll leave but things are starting to get weird: electronics are wonky and the locals are cranky. Like, scary cranky. If the spirits don’t depart soon, the consequences could be catastrophic. Meanwhile, Reverend Lesser and the anti-spectator movement are starting to become not just a nuisance but a threat to Sam and her family. With the help of some unusual visitors - including a hippie, an empath, and several famous spectators, can Sam and the gang figure out what’s drawing the ghosts to Bluebonnet in time to save it and themselves?
Kendra Alvey is an author, a yogi, and a live music junkie. She's part goth on her mother's side.

As I was immediately drawn-in by “The Haunter,” book one of the “Sam the Spectator” series, I couldn’t wait for book two. And with “Ghostapalooza” Alvey really delivers. Returning to fictional Bluebonnet, TX, was like visiting a place I know, because in book one Alvey dreams up such a rich world for her readers to explore. And populating this world is a truly engaging cast of characters. Not only teen goths (sigh!) but a truly evil preacher, a queer ghost uncle we all wish we had in our lives, and Sam’s bestie who makes me eye-roll as much as she makes me laugh.
In book two, these and other fave characters are joined by some new ones that I absolutely loved. Namely Yaz, an endearingly all-too-honest emotional empath who wears giant headphones to block out the constant “noise” of the world around him.
As was the case in book one, “Ghostapalooza” presents readers with another supernatural, super-ghost-y mystery to be solved by Sam and her motley crew. And as the title suggests (and just like book one), this is a satisfying deep-dive into all things 90s (Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” takes on a whole new dimension in the novel’s climax!).
(It’s also worth mentioning that the S. the S. series cover art, by Abigail Larson, is exceptional.)
Book one left me hungry for book two - and I can’t wait to read book three :)

I loved this follow-up to The Haunter--Alvey does not disappoint with her second book in the Sam the Spectator series! Sam is such an engaging character; Alvey clearly has not forgotten what it's like to be a teenager, because reading the book brought back vividly all those angsty teen emotions from when I was in high school haha. The dialogue is hilarious, the plot is compelling, and the world is so fully fleshed out that I'm convinced Bluebonnet, TX must be a real town. Questions are answered (including what happens with Sam and Levi's romance--yesss) and new ones are introduced in a way that will leave you thirsting for book #3. I loved it, I can't wait for the next one!!!
This was an even more entertaining romp than the debut book in the series, less so for the paranormal elements as for the human ones, particularly as we watch Sam negotiate a series of emotional challenges and learn about herself, her relationships, and the things she values most. It's a heartfelt, engaging story with memorable and highly relatable characters.
I enjoyed Sam the Spectator so much that I didn't think Ghostapalooza could match it. BUT IT DID. I was so happy to revisit Sam's world, family, and friends. In Ghostapalooza, Alvey adds new characters, new challenges, and new adventures. Honestly, I think Book Two is even more addictive. Is that even possible?
We are proud to announce that GHOSTAPALOOZA (Sam the Spectator #2) is a B.R.A.G.Medallion Honoree. This tells readers that this book is well worth their time and money!
