THIS IS ONE OF TWO BOOKS I REMEMBER FROM MY EARLY CHILDHOOD - This is the one I learned to read on, when I was 3. Don't know why, but I have always loved Parsley. I remember I used to read it over an over, and look at the beautiful pictures, and I even drew a picture of Parsley inside the cover of my book. (Well, Mom sent my book off to wherever moms send stuff to, and, suddenly, at this bright old age, I wanted to see Parsley again, and found a 1955 edition which looks like the one I had (it doesn't have to dust jacket which was so pretty, though)
Anyway, this is a 50's kind of children's book (It probably wouldn't do nowadays, because there is sadness and "sort-of" violence in it - although I didn't know that when I read it, probably because little kids don't get that stuff). It's a story about two friends, for little people who likely don't yet know what friends are, because they may well not yet have been out of the house to see other little people like themselves, and it is a story with a happy ending.
Gosh! I loved this book, and I feel that same love having it back now! I hugged it all the way home from the mailbox. I'd like to take it to bed with me, but now I am old enough to know better.
I have no clue how this came to be on my all-time favorites list, but, after I received it today, rushed home, tore off the wrapping, hugged it for a while, and then read it through twice, I know I was right to love it when I was a little thing. I am so glad to have Parsley home with me again.
If you can get, or, at least, see a copy with the original illustrations, you may understand something of what I am talking about - this may well have been my first introduction to art, as well.
Oh, heavens! When I went back to look for a link for this book, I found only offerings in the hundreds of dollars! I feel blessed that I was able to find my Parsley for under $10.00
I found this in a book nook at the Orange Tree Antique Mall in Winter Park and let me tell you, it was beautifully illustrated and gave total opposite of "Giving Tree" vibes. The only problem is it sort of glorifies killing hunters, and though I fundamentally oppose hunting for pleasure, hunting for food (which I suspect was what was happening) isn't sinful.
All time favorite children’s books. I read it every year at Christmas. It’s not really a Christmas story but it was a gift and its a sweet, charming book.
I am about to take this book to a friend's and read it to a small group of young children. I wonder what they will think. I'll let you know. There is human death in this book...
