Rate this book
Your country needs you. But sometimes, your friends need you more...

Private Andrew Ellis is just eighteen years old when he finds himself facing down the bullets and shrapnel of the Western Front. Somehow he must find a way to survive.

It is 1915, and the trenches of the Western Front have become one of the most dangerous places in the world.

As the bullets begin to fly, and the men begin to fall, Andrew Ellis must take on an alarming piece of advice from his Sergeant, George Needs, a man who has seen all four corners of the empire and fired a rifle in each of them.

Can Ellis go from a timid young lad, to a fearless soldier in a matter of hours? How difficult can it be to actually take a life?

Slaughter Fields is the gripping first instalment of the action-packed Trench Raiders series, perfect for fans of Alexander Fullerton, Alan Evans and Max Hennessy!

A novella that feels like it starts in the middle of the story...the reader is thrown right into the action, which is justified given its short length, but makes the character growth and transition seem furiously quick, but will no doubt be fleshed out as the series expands. At times it felt more aimed at a young adult market, but I think this will change as the authors' style evolves and matures.

Baptism of fire

Good read, the new recruit, the sprog, the hard bitten fatalist, the young soldier who’s given up on life.
Takes the sprog through the first battle, the realisation he had yet to fire his weapon, freezing in close combat but coming through the basic annihilation of his platoon.
Well written

Promising

I wasn't keen on the linguistic style used, far too twentyfirst century. For far more authentic period language refer to the glorious series by Henry Williamson who wrote so evocatively about WW1. That said, the fatalism, the terror, the heart stopping moments were amazing and reminded me of the emotion of the film Gallipoli. I will continue to the next instalment.

Realistic WWI Action

Mr. Wood places the reader in such believable settings that you clearly see the scenes portrayed. No holds barred action leaves you wondering about what happens next and also glad that you weren’t where these brave WWI soldiers were. Highly recommended.

This is a gritty, warts and all account of a young lads first few days in the trenches in WW1
It not glamorous, it’s about being worried being scared and about becoming a solider in the mot terrifying circumstances
Loved it, cant wait to read the next book In the series

I don't do book reviews.......

I don't do book reviews like you keep seeing, as I find that some give too much of the plot away and I personally hate that, as it makes the book not worth reading. I much prefer to take the authors back cover write up as a review as it can either intrigue you enough to read the book of provide you enough information to make you decide that the book is not for you.
My review rules are: The more stars, the more I liked it.
If there are too many typos or errors the less stars I give
If the storyline or plot is poor or contains too many errors, the characters are too weak, the ending lacking something, then the less stars I give.
Simple, uncomplicated and to the point without giving anything away.
Some of the books I read have been given to me by the author as a pre-release copy and this does not bias my reviews in any way.
