Abu Yusuf Discussing a Matter of Fiqh on his Death Bed
Abu Yusuf became ill, so I went to visit him, and found him unconscious. When he regained consciousness he said to me: "O Ibrahim, what is your opinion on this matter?" I said to him: "While you are in this state?" He said: "That is fine, let us discuss it, perhaps one may be saved by it."
Then he said: "O Ibrahim which is better in the casting of stones [during pilgrimage], to do so while walking or while mounted?" I said: "Mounted." He said: "Wrong." I said:" "Walking." He said "Wrong." I said: "Say your opinion, may Allah be pleased with you." He said: "As for the case where one stops where one should make supplication, then it is better to do so while walking, but if it is elsewhere then it is better while mounted." Then I left him, and as soon as I reached the door of his house, I head crying, and he died, may Allah have mercy on him.21

In the beginning there were lots of short anecdotes on how scholars of the past spent their time. It was quite similar and repetitive in meaning but I think that’s what really helped foreground the idea of maximising every minute of time with something useful.
Overall, it was more like a reference book as opposed to a full on practical treatise.
Also, I really liked the writing style and kudos to the translator too.
A wonderful collection of stories of scholars and how much they valued time. In an age where time is increasingly squandered, this becomes a pertinent read. Filled with inspiring accounts and pieces of advice, this book serves well as a booster for motivation. I found, however, that a lot of what is narrated in the book does not relate to the layman as much as it does for those at a higher spiritual level. From the onset, the writer explains that this is a treatise for students of sacred knowledge. This can make the book seem intense, but it does nonetheless make one wish to aspire to such a status, where one's time is fully devoted to worship.
A book with incredible stories. Truly motivating and shows the value of time. Time is something that if it is lost, it can not be gained back, and it should be used in the best of ways.
It's not enough to read this book once. I am so thankful for discovering it and the stories of the pious predecessors are truly inspiring. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
Neat little compilation of quotes exemplifying the discipline and effectiveness of classical Islamic scholars with specific regards to their time management
A beautiful read filled with stories and incidents of our pious predecessors, narrating to us how efficiently they spent their time and how their devotion and love for Allah was a means of their time being spent in the best way possible It also helps one to navigate their plans and routine around a timetable pleasing to Allah. This is great especially for students of knowledge!
a very inspiring, albeit daunting read! of course, once knowledge is required we must act on, may we be granted blessings in our time. will definitely be revisiting this book time & time again for reminders & inspiration, insha'Allah
Was a motivation for me! Honestly makes you realise the importance of time and how easily we let it slip. May it benefit all its readers with the wisdom of the value of time and how to use it productively.
This is an amazing book focussing on the importance Of time and how one can use their time effectively. Did you know that most people only use 10% of their life effectively imagine how many things we all can do if we used our free time doing something. We could have built a whole new civilisation
This has been on my tbr for almost 11 years... it's about time I read it!
This book just wasn't for me. It could have been 1/3 the size if the author didn't feel the need to give a paragraph "background" on each scholar he named. It got very repetitive and added nothing to the book.
Very poignant reminder for us all, Muslims and non Muslims, there were a lot of examples which really do highlight the points but perhaps not all are necessary
