Trollhunters has a very interesting premise, and I was eager to try it. From the blurb I read on the Libby app, it reminded me of the Percy Jackson books (Which I love). And yes, there are a few similarities: a boy with a troubled upbringing has to discover and come to terms with a whole new identity and perspective about the world around him, and must learn to use his newfound knowledge and power to save said world from destruction at the hands of evil forces. However, that's basically where the similarities end.

Maybe I was stupid to walk into it as blindly as I did, and perhaps I should have paid more attention to, you know, the fact that one of the authors was Guillermo Del-freaking-Toro! 😄 But Trollhunters is, honestly, rather GRITTIER than I expected it to be. I did expect it to be on the spooky side, but I feel like it went... a little too far, in my opinion. And not just with the violence. Foul language is used a bit gratuitously and unnecessarily (as in, merely as an excuse to sound more "edgy" and not to realistically portray the dialogue to make it feel more genuine), and there are a few rather... ahem... raunchy references (though infrequent) that really didn't seem too necessary, either.

I was hoping for a fun romp and an exciting adventure--and I did get that! Don't get me wrong! But what I also got was a trip through a dumpster full of garbage to find a plastic knick-knack. If you ask me, I don't feel it was really worth the journey. The story didn't really disappoint for me, but the riveting elements didn't really outweigh the rotten parts, in my opinion. Glad I read it, but I don't think I'll ever read it again. If you're like me, looking for a cleaner YA read, I would recommend moving on. You're not going to find it here.
