Shen Qingxian is the Honored Lord Lianhua, only lacking ascending to the heavens.
Gu Jianshen is the Demonic Emperor Jiuyuan, only lacking destroying the three worlds.
Everyone believed that a meeting between Shen Qingxian and Gu Jianshen must result in a war spanning the three worlds, the two of them dueling to the death.
Until Shen Qingxian went through a hundred years of closed-door cultivation, and spied upon heaven’s mysteries.
Words of heaven’s mysteries: For ten thousand years, no one in the cultivation world has ascended to the heavens. This is because the Heavenly Staircase has long since collapsed. The only way to set this right is to follow the directions of this jade scroll.
Jade Scroll Writing: First, meet with Gu Jianshen. Second, drink and get drunk together with Gu Jianshen……. Thirteenth, pass a ‘spring night’ together with Gu Jianshen…….
Edit: lowering my rating to 1 ⭐, 2 is too much compared to other novels that I've read.
The idea behind this story was perfect but the execution left me greatly disappointed.
I found the story really boring, repetitive and predictable. The main characters both have uninteresting personalities and felt bland to me. Their dynamics as a couple are way too sweet for my tastes and full of cheesy dialogues and unnecessary misunderstandings. The side characters are barely present and mostly serve as mere decorations in my opinion, and I found it was really a pity, considering that Shen Qingxian's disciples in particular could've been pretty interesting (Xia Ting!). The only thing that I liked is the side couple and I appreciated that at least in the extra chapters they found some space.
1,5 ⭐, rounded up to ⭐⭐ thanks to the side couple and Xia Ting.
If you want to read an interesting novel, then you have to read ‘Want To Ascend? Then Fall in Love.’ The author dabbed on diverse range of genres, tags, and tropes as if experimenting on which one she is most adept in. In a way, the plot was also a great way for the readers to discover their preferences. I would like to say it’s a roller coaster ride of a read; but to be honest, it was like land across time.
The novel comprises 214 chapters with 10 extras. While this might seem lengthy, the chapters are quite short! The novel is structured into several arcs, allowing for easy breaks in between. It’s akin to reading a collection of short stories, each contributing to a bigger picture that sums up the lessons within each narrative. I found that truly interesting.
Just from the title, I didn’t expect ‘Want To Ascend? Then Fall in Love’ to be so funny and refreshing in the world of cultivation novels. It’s a hilarious and healing read, with the author expertly balancing humor and angst. I would find myself laughing before the feels hit me, and while there are some angsty moments, they don’t linger after I finished reading. Plus, there’s plenty of sweetness and fluff to keep the readers smiling. Despite the abundance of ‘dog food’, the short stories in between kept it from feeling overwhelming.
Through those arcs of short stories, the author masterfully explored various genres and tropes. The main cultivation story is a delightful mix of mystery, comedy, and fluff. Using the concept of transmigration, the author dived into tales of ancient royalty, a slice of life, campus romance, enemies to lovers, pseudo-incest, age gap, modern settings, gaming world, futuristic landscape, arranged marriages, and even a story reminiscent of a floral fairy tale. The narrative also ventured into the realms of the entertainment industry, the criminal underworld, and even a zombie apocalypse. It’s an impressive array for a single novel, but the surprises don’t end there. Throughout the story, the author also delved into philosophical, psychological, and religious themes, adding depth and complexity to an already rich tapestry of storytelling. It was simply mind-blowing.
I can’t say too much as spoilers might ruin the readers' reading experience and I want readers to fully experience what I have experienced while reading this novel. It’s not simply a lighthearted cultivation danmei novel by the author, the lessons were enough to be an eye-opener for a reader. Through the author’s comedic narrative, I can also feel the author’s enjoyment while she was writing this; thus, I want the readers to also be able to feel likewise.
Want to Ascend? Then Fall in Love is a journey to find your belief, your love, and yourself.
4.5/5 stars because the main couple have their own flaws and it's entertaining to see them overcoming their own mental challenge through quick transmigration in mortal world. The comedic undertones, the world building, and the author's implementation of their belief about daoism are something that attract me throughout each arcs. Shoutout to the fan translator because they did great in delivering the story.
These two leads (especially Gu Jianshen arrrkghh) aren't a perfect character and I love that both of these people can be painfully relatable sometimes.
The point is: this danmei is really worth reading. Bonus point: there is a side couple as well!!!
Read a few of Long Qi's books and I must say this is one of the better ones. Author's books tend to be on the longer side with lots of world/ plot/ character-building. This book is not an exception. Luckily for me, it didn't get as draggy. I was pleasantly surprised by the book tbh. Judging from the title, I would have expected a pure Xuanxia novel but I was surprised by the other genres encountered.
However, about 2 arcs involved philosophical/ in-depth thought exploring tropes which I really disliked. not my preference. Thus, I can't judge if it was written/ explained well or not. I just sped read through it.
I enjoyed the plot, interactions and arcs. I also liked the comedic aspects and the side characters. but with the length.... 3/5 may read again?
It was a funny and romantic novel... but I think it was a little bland at the end. The main characters are quite well but I think they need more development!. But, it was beautiful!!!
