Forbidden Shifters #3

A Mate For Jackson

Rate this book
Jackson Durant is a lone wolf. Literally.

As a wolf shifter in a world that is completely hostile to shifters of any kind, he’s taken it upon himself to live a life of solitude as a way of keeping himself safe. If only the members of his family would follow his lead and stop falling in love with people and almost blowing their shifter secret. And if only Jackson himself wasn’t desperately in love with a woman he’ll never let himself have.

Kaya Chalk doesn’t hate men. She’s just constantly annoyed by them. They fawn over her, pursue her, make fools of themselves for her. What she wouldn’t give for a little peace and quiet! With her sister paired off and in love, Kaya becomes determined to live a peaceful, solitary life. That would be possible if only Jackson Durant weren’t suddenly a part of her life again, rescuing her from car trouble in a blizzard and scowling his way into her heart.

As a hostile presence returns from the past and starts to bear down on the Durants, Jackson and Kaya find themselves drawn to one another in a way that neither of them ever thought would truly happen.

This is the third book in the "Forbidden Shifters" Series, but can also be read as a standalone. No cliffhangers. This full-length paranormal romance 80k word story contains strong sexual themes/language and is not intended for readers under the age of 18. FREE on Kindle unlimited

I liked this better than I expected. And, in a lot of ways, this was pretty fantastic. However, there are some issues with Jackson that made me knock this down a bit.

We met Jackson and Kaya in earlier books. Jackson is the oldest of the three shifter brothers while Kaya is the younger of the two sisters who hang out with them all the time.

Jackson has spent the last two books and the first half of this one being a supreme jerk and idiot. He is submerged in self-hatred because he thinks of himself as an especially dangerous shifter. He’s been in love with Kaya since he was 32 and she was 18, but felt like he was way too old for her and dangerous to her. So, instead of getting help, he decides that he needs to push her away by being as big of an asshole as possible. While Kaya used to have a crush on him, a year or so ago, he successfully pushed her away by being a giant douche.

This book starts with her being 25 and him being 39. His two brothers have gotten together with their partners and Jackson is lonely. He’s punishing himself all the time and taking responsibility for every bad thing. It’s pretty grim.

But… on the way to a family vacation, Kaya needs his help. Which leads to them being trapped in a cabin together and finally, he confesses he’s been into her but has been pushing her away on purpose.

What made this work well is that Kaya doesn’t give him a pass on his BS.

“You’re saying that you’ve been a dick for years because you feel so connected to me?”

He nodded. She rolled her eyes. “I’m calling bullshit.”

“…I think you have some petulant little crush on me and that’s all it is. So, that’s exactly how I’m gonna treat it. I’m not interested in men who pout about their crushes.”

She challenges him and pushes him. And doesn’t give in to his idiocy.

And he starts to make some changes and get serious about being more emotionally healthy.

No OM drama and no OW drama on page. I’m not a big fan of the fact that the hero was sleeping with other women for the five years that he was “in love” with the heroine. It makes me super angry and irritated.

The heroine was a virgin though she seems to have a good sense of her body and normal sex-ed.

In general, I’ve really enjoyed this series. In this world, being a shifter is illegal and if you get caught being a shifter, you’re locked up in a concentration camp. This comes into the story as one reason that Jackson doesn’t want to bring Kaya into his world. There is definitely some tension related to their legal concerns. We get a look into what it’s like to constantly try to keep yourself as a secret. This book takes the adventure one more step but thankfully, it doesn’t feel too high stress. This book seems to resolve the overall danger... with a nice 4-year epilogue that shows them happy and well.

This is part of a 6-book series and the first three are closely related. Curious about the next three.

I have been waiting to see what happens with the grumpy wolf of the batch Jackson. The reader has gotten glimpses of him in the previous books and knows he’s basically the reason why he is not with his mate, Kaya and why he’s just generally in a bad mood. He tells himself it’s to protect the people he loves and keep their family secret of being shifters. Since Seth and Raphael have found their mates and brought their mates into the family secret, it’s getting harder for him to ignore Kaya, even if he’s way too old for her. If he’s not going to act on his attraction to Kaya then fate will have to step in and give him a hand. A sudden blizzard and Kaya’s broken-down car finally bring the two of them into a situation where they cannot ignore each other. This will change everything for not just Jackson, but shifters everywhere.
I loved Jackson! I’ve been rooting for him to get his act together and boy does he ever! This was by far my favorite book in the series, but I can recommend the entire series. The Durant family is charming and the mates that enter their lives are a wonderful extension of the family.

I did not think I would like this one because of how mean and “woah is me” Jackson has been.

Yeah I was wrong. The way this relationship plays out is absolutely the cutest thing ever. I loved the humor in this book as well.

I wouldn’t have minded these stories being longer to dive deeper into the whole shifter prejudice. I found the story line so interesting. It doesn’t go too drop into it though with more telling than showing… especially the end. I would have loved to see Kaya talking to the media and everything. But these are romances and that’s the forefront. And I’m okay with that as well.

A Mate for Jackson was an absolutely amazing listen; Selena Scott never disappoints. In the previous two volumes, we got a peek into who Jackson is, the sullen older brother, the one who has denied his mate, Kayla. He has watched and loved her from a distance, convincing himself being with her is a risk, that he is too dangerous. Kayla has had feelings for Jackson, but his moodiness, always avoiding, and ignoring her, has made her believe he didn't reciprocate the feelings. Jackson's reasons for not being with her are now moot. Since Raph and Seth are now both mated and have shared their secrets with their partners.

But fate and a full moon change everything, putting the wheels in motion. The chemistry between the couple is utterly electrifying, one driven by passion, desire, and long-awaited love. I absolutely love how their story unfolded. It was angsty, passionate, steamy, adventurous, suspenseful, exciting with the right amount of drama, action, and unexpected twists. By the end, Jackson had grown, discovering so much about himself, totally swoon-worthy. Loved the Durant brothers. I wish there was a fourth brother so I could listen to more of the series.

The conclusion was exhilarating and totally satisfying, especially the twist at the end. Everything came together, and the trilogy, including the future of the shifter population, wrapped up perfectly.

Craig A. Hart's narration was outstanding. He captured and portrayed the characters, emotions, connection, and intensity found in the pages flawlessly. He breathed life in Selena Scott's words and made the story even more engaging. The combination of excellent writing and narration makes the Forbidden Shifters a fantastic series, one I'm highly recommending.

Wow loved this

Omg loved this book so much have read it twice already. Brilliant story Jackson who is the oldest brother of Seth and Raph who are twins he is always the moody, grumpy one of the family his mother Elizabeth took him in after his parents where killed and found out he was a wolf shifter when he turned under the full moon Seth and Raph are also adopted he was their brother and father figure. He has loved Kayla from afar for many years he was always grumpy, moody and says too old and dangerous for her made it felt as though he didn’t like her. Kayla had a crush on Jackson for years but he crushed that a year ago when he said they could never be friends she crushed all feelings for him and now completely ignored him. Due to bad weather they are forced together and a full moon is coming they end up in the families cabin where their is a basement where he chains himself to the walls as he says he is dangerous. The wolf scents Kayla his mate breaks the chains and as the door hadn’t latched closed he gets into the living area and there stands Kayla the wolf just watches her his mate.Jackson admits to Kayla why he has been horrible to her and can’t keep it too himself anymore. Jackson has a lot of work to do on his own to be better for Kayla be a better person he loves her Kayla is sceptical about being Jacks mate but gives him incentives to improve how he feels about himself. This is a beautiful story nice to see Jacks and Kayla get their HEA but also what happens to the shifter population and the change that comes for them all

This starts 2 YEARS after the end of the first book. WTF??! Raf and nat are still just bf and gf, nothing has changed with Bower and Elizabeth, and Jackson is the same big dumb idiot. 2 years is a huge time jump in romance, so what happened with the hunters and that group, by taking out the leader we are suppose to believe that there is no more pressure on the family?! Again, for me at least, having such a huge time jump takes the urgency out of the story and what is happening to the family.

In reading it, she has change the time passing to only one year between the end of the second book and this one, but knowing the age of Kya (23 and now 25) and also she mentions at the very star Bower living in the house for 3 years total, so that makes it 2 years passing not the one she is stating later in the book

Once Jackson stopped being an idiot about every thing, I really enjoyed him and Kya (sp?). I really liked the scene with his wolf for the first time and seeing that part of him realize and accept what Kya is, and that basically gives his human side permission. i understand Kya's standoffishness with him and not trusting Jackson's commitment but at the same time I want her to go with it, I hate how unbelieving she is of the whole mate thing

I'm also wondering where the next three shifters are going to come in on this story, I have a guess they are they the same that are mentioned from the news report about the raid but the way of this author I'm thinking we wont actually see them until the next book

🐺Can Jackson surrender to their attraction without risking Kaya's safety?!😞

Excellent! Very exhilarating end to the three book series. This shifter romance adventure features two couples who work through their issues to unite, and more endangered shifters come out of the woodwork. A troubled ex-con returns to Boulder to plot against the Durant shifter brothers, and some brave humans risk their lives and freedom to help protect the persecuted shifters.

It's all exciting and Jackson's repressed obsession for Kaya is smoldering as the 🔥fire between them builds. They are a great pairing and Kaya is pretty strong and fearless! But I really adored Jackson who wants to protect everyone so much that he often makes decisions on what's best for them without their input. He does not seem arrogant or controlling so much as just fearful for their safety and ready to risk himself and his happiness for their good. His efforts to improve himself and confide in and consult others demonstrate he recognizes his weaknesses. The second couple's romance is more low key and gentle.

I am not a big fan of extended intimate episodes and this story has a few. But they are well on in the story and easy to skim through if you are so inclined.

The story and series end is joyful, following on a thrilling action climax. Well worth the wait!😊

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

It was a pleasure to read this truly enjoyable & fantastic wolf shifter romance, there are character crossovers from previous books but this book is complete and standalone.
The plot is well-thought out and written with some unexpected events. The characters are well-developed and have a variety of traits and different sides to their individual personalities.
It is about: a world that discriminates against shifters and often passes a death sentence on them. One family of wolf shifters (The Durant family) is unregistered and lives in secrecy, this is Jackson Durant’s story.
There is: wolf shifters, humans, a human female (Kaya), a veterinarian (Jackson), a sympathetic law enforcement agent (Ben Woodrow), a vengeful hunter (Race), a shifter safehouse, friends, twists & turns, intrigue, suspense, action, danger, threats, a vendetta, violence, secrets, family issues, attractions, hope, discrimination, longings, mates, confrontations, fear, misunderstandings, anger, apologies, confusion, emotional turmoil, obsession, verbal banter, memories, discovery, injuries, devious plans, conflict, gun shots, public opinions, happiness, love, some steam & a wonderful satisfying ending.
I would recommend this shifter romance.

Now that his brothers have found love, Jackson's loneliness becomes more obvious to him, as does his burning desire for Kaya Chalke. Kaya has always been fascinated with Jackson, but his gruff and rude dismissal of her when she tried to be his friend has cured her of any lingering desire. When inclement weather forces them together on the full moon and Jackson's wolf decides that Kaya is his mate, Jackson the man is left to pick up the pieces and convince Kaya that they could be good together.

This was the best book in the series so far, hands down!!! Jackson and Kaya were both likeable characters that grew together beautifully throughout the series. Selena Scott did a fantastic job taking a character that had the potential to be insufferable and turning him into a broken man, willing to work on himself to end up with the woman of his dreams (literally). I loved every minute of their love story and also loved the personal growth that Jackson made in embracing himself fully to be "worthy" of Kaya and her love.

This book was absolutely fantastic and I will 100% read it again!!

Although this is part of a series and I own the other two books, I started with the final book since it had just popped up on my Kindle. It can be read as a standalone book but I will definitely go back now and read the other two books. This book is about the oldest Durant brother, Jackson, who has denied his feelings for Kaya. He's always felt she was too young for him and he believed she would be better off without him. In a world full of prejudice against shifters where they were placed in internment camps and where those that harbored them were jailed, there was a basis for his fears. Kaya and Jackson's relationship changes throughout the book as does Jackson's adopted mother's relationship with a boarder. In the background, Race, a man who is newly out of prison and wants revenge on the Durant family makes plans to take the family down. Mix in a shifter safe house, full moons and lots of family love and you will he held captive in this intense book.

I didn't think I would love this book so much, but wow. I was sure I would have a problem with Jackson being an annoying overbearing know-it-all, but he was determined to be better and that made a difference. The highlight of the story for me was Kaya. Firstly she became my favorite virgin protagonist!! It is so rare to see a virgin FMC in her 20s, who is not traumatized, is waiting for religious reasons or is not sexually confident. For me, Kaya's virginity was further proof of her self-confidence, she didn't do something she didn't want to, just to follow a rule, but she also didn't deprive herself of self-exploration. Furthermore, our FMC knew how to deal perfectly with MMC's personality and this made the story's rhythm perfect for me. She didn't accept his bullshit, nor did she forgive him too easily for the shit he did in the past, but at the same time she gave him space to win her heart (and ours) throughout the story.

The pairing started out the most awkward and uncomfortable. I wasn’t digging them as a couple and though the sentiment of improving yourself and learning self love is a good message I didn’t think the execution was completely organic or appropriate because of the “reward” system (I realise that it’s supposed to be for romantic banter purposes but I don’t think the writer finessed it). Though this book also had the strongest plot and the best ending. It even answered a huge plot hole question I had for the end of the last book– which should have been at least mentioned in the last book and not more than six chapters into this one. Most of these books have ended in weird abrupt ways but this one was the most satisfying.

I have loved every one of the books in this series. I was anxiously awaiting this book. I knew that Jackson would eventually have to make some kind of decision about Kaya. I like that she stood her ground and was moving on. Jackson was more comfortable as his wolf than as a human when it came to Kaya. I also loved the relationship he had with Bauer. It just seemed natural for Elizabeth and Bauer to come together. The twist with Race at the end had me reeling. I thought this was the best one yet and that is saying a lot. I requested an advanced reader copy and am under no obligation to leave this review.

So very exciting!
It’s amazing the transformations people can make with the right motivation! Car trouble, a blizzard, and a full moon all conspire to set in motion major changes for Jackson Durant. I love seeing the way Jackson comes around, accepting the possibility of a relationship with Kaya. He takes Kaya’s hard-spoken truths to heart. He is such a sweetheart; protective, of course, but sweet. He’s not the only one making changes. Do read this awesome story for some epic surprises and a HEA for more than one shifter!

This series is great and this last book ends it with so much more than I could expect. Jackson may be the oldest brother but he happens to be the biggest jerk too. At least to Kaya he is. She just can’t understand why the last few years why he started pushing her away. Jackson definitely is an interesting character. I loved how there really is a lot to him and his personality. The story really does an amazing thing making each character feel so real. You definitely want to root for him and smack him at the same time. Expect romance and some action. I promise the ending will blow you away.

The Jackson the most!

A mate for Jackson: Forbidden Shifters book 3
By Selena Scott
Kindle unlimited purchase
Out of the 3 brothers, Jackson has it the worst. Even though he is his worst enemy. I've fallen in love with these brothers. I think after reading Jackson's story I love him the most. How he takes everything on his shoulder. He is 38 and single. He is in love with Kaya who just so happens to be 25 years old.
Humans don't always get it right. The race, religion, sex, and sexual discrimination is 1 a thing that we have trouble fighting against but add the added discrimination that is mentioned in this book it makes you step back as a reader and put yourself in their shoes. And the way Serena Scott makes the reader do just that is heart pulling, it makes you feel their pain and that is what Jackson's (the brothers) story represents to me.

A Mate For Jackson is book three in the series Forbidden Shifters by author Selena Scott. I believe that so far this one is my favorite of the series. It just speaks to the heart- Jackson is a lone wolf you puts everything above is happiness. He actually believes he doesn’t deserve to be happy. Then comes Kaya, she turns his world topsy-turvy. Shows him that he not only deserves happiness but he’s got… well I’ll let you figure that out for yourselves.
Enjoy!!

I'm glad that Jackson finally got his act together and got his girl. I think this is my favorite book out of the series. Jackson thought he was protecting everyone when he was really making them worry about him. I can't wait for more from this author. A very satisfying conclusion to the 3 book series. I really liked how the author focused on a particular couple in each book, but still had characters from the rest of the series appear in alk the books. Sometimes, laying the foundations of another story to come. Just such a satisfying read. I highly recommend this series to any fan of PNR books.

Really good book.

Only issue is a 25 year old virgin from an abusive home, seriously stupid concept that is hard to pull off since the 19th century. Ugh!

Literally love EVERYTHING else in this book. But the author kept pressing the stupid virgin thing and I only got more and more annoyed. Totally bumped me from the story.

A Mate for Jackson

I never suspected that Race had a daughter that was a shifter. I'm glad they didn't kill him or they would have been in trouble since he was a known leader for the shifter haters. They would have been exposed and hunted even more. Happy ending for everyone.

Will Jackson ever chill out and allow himself to quit his feelings for Kaya? There is so much turmoil and excitement in this story, but also laughter and love. The series is ingenious, and I can't help but hope there might be more to come.
