Witch Cozy Mystery Witches and Wine, Book 5 Pepper discovers an unopened letter addressed to the aunts in the attic. The letter holds the secret to her parents’ disappearance. The only trouble is, the trail leads straight to murder. With Lucas called away on mysterious business, can Pepper keep a clear head and solve the murder with the help of her aunts and her cat?
USA Today best-selling author Morgana Best survived a childhood of deadly spiders and venomous snakes in the Australian outback. Morgana Best writes cozy mysteries and enjoys thinking of delightful new ways to murder her victims.
Chaos ensues once again for our young protagonist. One day while helping out her aunts, Pepper heads to a storage room in Mugwort Manor in search of a spell book, and finds a bunch of sealed envelopes in the process. Giving the letters a quick perusal, she’s quite shocked to find that one of them may hold the key to her parent's whereabouts.
And of course Pepper is irritated with her rather dimwitted aunts at this point because the letter is 5 years old. That’s right 5 YEARS old, and they never gave it a second glance. The trio just chucked it away in a storage room and forgot about it because they thought it was junk mail. Grr! I swear aunt Agnes, Maude and Dorothy must have huffed a lot of paint back in the day because they really seem to be lacking brain cells. That, or they simply just don’t know how to read and comprehend things.
Anyways, Pepper is determined to follow up on the letter because she wants to know more about her parents. It of course dawns on her that it may be a trap, but she doesn’t care. She has to know what happened to them! So while her dumb relatives are bickering with one another, as per usual, our heroine slips away and heads to the location the letter told her about.
There she meets a man named Dr. Beckett Maxwell, who apparently knows things about her folks and has been waiting to tell her about them. According to him, her parents are doing just fine, which is a huge relief to Pepper because she figured they were dead. What wonderful news! But before getting into the more detailed information about what her parents have been doing all this time, Dr. Maxwell heads to the kitchen to make some tea.
A rather loud crash is heard, like the shattering of a teapot but Pepper keeps her cool and stays put. After some time though, she decides to investigate as it doesn’t take that long to make tea, and there she finds the doctor dead on the kitchen floor. What are the odds of this man dying of natural causes right before he tells her more about her parents? Slim to none, I’d say! This cannot be a coincidence, and Pepper can’t shake the feeling that his death was due to foul play.
After calling the police, they come out to inspect the scene thoroughly, before coming to the conclusion that Dr. Maxwell died of natural causes. But Pepper’s not buying it! Someone murdered the doctor before he could share family secrets with her. There’s just no way it was a coincidence! But why would someone want to silence him? What was he about to say?
And that is pretty much the entire base plot of the story. Now it’s not bad per say, but it’s not great either. I was hoping for a fun romp full of excitement and mystery, but I didn’t get that. There was a lot of back and forth and back and forth story telling, and after a while it got kinda dull as the breadcrumb clues weren’t that thrilling.
Eventually the case does get solved and the overarching plot thickens at the end of the book, followed by a happy little surprise. Strangely though, this novella stops on an odd note and I’m not really sure how to take it. There is also another surprise that happens in the book, but I can’t say that I was too shocked by it as I have suspected something was off about a certain someone for a long time.
Anyways, over all I’d have to say the story was a bit dull. This is probably my least favorite installment in the entire series, which is a shame. It just wasn’t that thrilling and the mystery was bland. There was a terrible lack of romance, and there were TONS of grammatical errors. Now I don’t consider myself to be too picky when it comes to the occasional error here and there in books, but it was bad in this one!
Some of the wording didn’t make sense and the errors would happen so frequently that it brought me out of immersion. BOO! Plus there was one chapter that felt like it should have either been cut from the book, or cut and placed in a different section because it didn’t make too much sense. Chapter 11 ends on an action scene, then chapter 12 starts off with no continuation of it. Then chapter 13 comes along and then suddenly we’re back to the action scene from Chapter 11. What the heck? It was very confusing and broke my enjoyment of the story.
Despite the terrible lack of editing this book has, and the mediocre plot which just felt a lot like filler, I will still read the next novel. I know Best is capable of writing a really good story so I have the hope that the next installment will be much better than this one and will tie many of the plot points together. And considering how this novella ended, I’m sure the next book's gonna be a doozy! Can't wait.
Pepper's aunts are more confusing than ever! When Pepper is sent to the attic (which is really just another room down the hall from the aunts bedrooms, she discovers unopened mail as well as the book she was sent for. The mail turns out to be a request for the aunts to visit an acquaintance to learn more about Pepper's parents. Pepper decides to visit on her own and see what information she can gleen. When she meets the sender of the letter he is very nice and wants to tell her everything over a cup of tea. Sadly he is killed before the tea is made.
When she gets back to Mugwort Manor, Lucas needs to talk to her right away. He tells her that he has to leave on official cleaner business, and gives her a special phone for him to contact her. He tells her he will take care of the business of the murdered man when he gets back. The aunts however feel immediate investigation and solving the murder is necessary.
Pepper's aunts are women you love yet are constantly annoyed with their actions. They basically make Pepper and friend Linda do all the sleuthing (read b&e, collecting hair samples, etc.) Linda is a little timid for a shifter wolf, but she goes with Pepper and supports her efforts at least! And Lucas! He can't seem to say more than two words on a phone without being cut off! Of course these character flaws are avenues for Pepper to actually figure things out.
What a fun mystery with a special surprise about Hectate (the cat.) Being from the USA, I am learning many details of life in Australia, including native animals! Ms Best has a flair for dry with in her characters and this makes them all the funnier. You won't want to miss this fifth installment of Pepper, her aunts, and friends. I can't wait for the next book to be written now!
WITCHES' SPELLS by Morgana Best.(WITCHES AND WINE),BOOK 5.WITCHES' SPELLS.
I received a free copy of this book via author and am voluntarily leaving a review. Oh my God! I can't believe what a great book this is! Pepper discovers a letter sent to the aunt's with information about her parents, so she goes to the address on the letter to see what Dr. Maxwell wanted to tell the aunts. She finds him at his house, he offers her a cup of tea but dies of "natural causes" which she doesn't believe to be true. So, even when Lucas before going on a trip told her not to get involved with the murder case, she gets seriously involved! The story gets better and better There are questions answered through the story and the book ends in a very well done cliff hanger. I can't wait to start reading the next book! If you love cozy mysteries, this series is made for you. You won't regret getting it
This is a great book; this is the fifth book in the Witches and Wine Series written by Morgana Best. This book can be read as a standalone, but once you read it you will defiantly want to go back and catch up with the other book in this series. Pepper discovers an unopened letter addressed to the aunts in the attic. The letter holds the secret to her parents’ disappearance. The only trouble is, the trail leads straight to murder. This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. This book will keep you reading long into the night. If you are looking for a great book, then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book by this great author. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy of this book. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
I just love the Witches and Wine series. It is a different kind of vampire and witch books. I enjoy the character Pepper and all the learning and growing she has had to go through since finding out she was a vampire. Peppers three witchy aunts are a good laugh. Linda is Pepper's best friend who is a shifter wolf and reluctantly gets in all sorts of trouble with Pepper. Of course, there's Lucas, Pepper's one true love, who is also a cleaner. Everyone together solves murders, but this murder is involved with Pepper's parents (who have been missing for 5 years). What really happened to her parents? You will need to read to find out what happens to the cat, Hecate. Enjoy!
Pepper is helping her ditzy aunts clean the attic and comes across a letter dated five years previously. It contained information that could lead to the discovery of her parents! Lucas is gone so he will not be able to help her. She sets off to see someone about the contents of the letter and her parents…only to have him end up dead! Now, she will have to sleuth her way into discovering why someone would want him dead over the information he had to tell her in relation to her parents~ Nice little surprise is awaiting the reader about a certain black feline! More twists and turns and Pepper will once again help save the day! But what is coming?
I love this series. It's always been quirky and fast paced but they s last installment was over way too soon and left a cliff hanger ending. Darn it. The plot is getting deeper in the search for the truth about Pepper's parents. I'm eagerly awaiting Book 6. This a cleanly written cozy mystery series with magic, romance and humor. Highly recommend to cozy mystery fans. Ms Best also uses Australian terms and spelling which adds to the fun.
Each of Morgana's series has its own merits and each book can easily stand alone, but if you are lucky enough to come across one you just want to find more! This one has Pepper mixed up in a murder and a mystery with only the Aunts and her cat to help unravel the peculiar murder and the other investigations. The writing keeps you turning pages, the humor keeps you snurfling, and the characters make you giggle inanely. The publisher's blurb gives hints and there is no need for spoilers, but that really is only a tease into the real enjoyment!
We can't wait to start the next book in the series I read it to one of my patients so as much as I would love to read ahead I wait till she is awake to hear more. Morgana these are the best books I have ever read please keep us intertained with such great stories We even try to figure out who actually did it but you sure keep us guessing .thank you for making my patients an me happy and intertained with such great readsç
Witches Spells is Book 5 in the Witches and Wines Series. Lucas is off on a mysterious mission and Pepper finds an opened letter in the Aunts attic which can reveal a clue about Pepper's missing parents. When she goes to find the person that wrote the letter, a murder is discovered and Pepper is on the path to solving another murder with the Aunt's help.
I won't give away any spoilers, but Hecate, Pepper's cat has a major change in this book and I loved it !!!
When Pepper goes to find a recipe for one of her aunts medicines. She discovers a letter that may contain the secret to her parents whereabouts. She goes to the writers house to talk to him, only to be in the house when the owner is killed. Lucas has to go away on a case and implores Pepper to not investigate. But he forgets to take her aunt's stubbornness and curiosity into account.
Another fun entry in this series with developed characters, some humor, and a bit of intrigue
In cleaning the attic, Pepper has found a letter about her missing parents. She has new hope of tracking them down. She visits a man to learn more but he is murdered during her visit. Pepper, her aunts, and Linda begin a wild chase to find the murdered. Of course, Lucas has been called out on a case.
I really enjoy this series. The characters are wonderful and a little crazy, there’s a few laughs spaced throughout the book and a mystery with a few surprises.
I had no idea Pepper had a cat? So I wasn’t really shocked when she turned into a woman. Lucas maybe could try to find an area with better phone coverage or speak fast or send an sms, since he called her 5 times and never managed to tell her what he needed! The mystery was really fun and for the longest time I couldn’t solve it. And it was such a big twist
This book will come at you fast. I don't know if it was boxing or kickboxing, maybe both. I got slammed left and right, sometimes both at the same time. There is major turns and mysterious twists. Hang on to your socks when blasted!I
Book 5 also has humor, mystery, murder, and no sex. Pepper tries to find out more about her parents' disappearance, but finds another body instead. This time she can't save herself, but you'll never guess who saves her. Highly recommend.
Easy to read and relaxing adventure. Interesting characters. Story is developing even more and everything we previously read in earlier books is getting connected with this story.
most of peppers aunts' spells work great. trying to figure out who did it made their search not only complicated, but funny. only to have the spell go wonky in a way no one can guess.the ending was the best! had me standing up and screaming YES
Another book by Morgana Best with unusual twists and turns. There’s never a dull moment when reading one of her books. Love the cat’s story and look forward to reading more about her.
I enjoyed this book too and hope there will be more in this series. It’s getting more and more interesting. Now I’ll go and read some others by this author.
Hilarious and fun, plus a surprise ending. Another good cozy addition to the Witches and Wine series that helps carry the plot along. Definitely worth the read as something big is surely going to happen after this. I personally can't wait to read on, which I have already done (I read chapter 1 of book 6 because I just had to know).
However...
I feel so sad. I read The Kitchen Witch, Australian Witch: Prequel to The Kitchen Witch, and Sea Witch. I love these books. They are the reason I think Morgana is the best in the cozy witch mystery genre, so now I am wondering what happened.
My notes can be found in the boxset, but to give you an idea:
1. Chapter 15 should be between chapters 3 and 4. I knew something was missing when I started reading. I made a note in chapter 4 asking, "Why can't Pepper talk about Lucas? He wasn't at the scene of the murder, he wasn't involved in the murder. He didn't even answer the phone. He is busy." I wondered if the lack of information was due to an off scene conversation to be learned later... Until a new, secret phone dropped into the story with no answers to the first question. Then at last chapter 15 turned up, taking me back in time right out of the blue and confusing me. THE LUCAS AND PEPPER SCENE WAS MISPLACED!!!! HUGELY!!!! And no, it isn't a flashback scene.
2. The author works super hard to give Pepper a reason to believe Becket was murdered. The points the character mentally struggles with throughout chapter 3 just keep getting repeated over and over and over like she can't even convince herself. Then in chapter 4 the aunts debate on whether or not their new cleaning lady is the murderer, making the stretch for a murder mystery forced. Regrettably, this effort gives a dull tone to the beginning. The book does pick up, though. There are a several amazing, fun, hilarious chapters readers won't want to miss. I am just saying the beginning isn't thought out but is more of a first draft.
The series is still great. The plot is intriguing and the characters loveable. I hate putting the books down.
With this latest book in the series, it has become unreadable to me. The main character is an idiot who has to constantly be saved by the big strong man. The aunts are ridiculous with their "secrets" and lies. I'm over these types of books having elders who are emotionally abusing the younger characters. They are bullies with their secrets and nasty attitudes.
The premise has gotten tired and old, I no longer care about any of it.
Massively disappointing considering how much I liked the first two books. You can tell that the author is now churning them out just to make money and doesn't care about the story or the characters anymore.
Since these books are rather pricey for the format (4.99 USD each on Kindle), I am left feeling bitter and disappointed. I have read books that are free on kindle that are much better.
I feel bad leaving a 1-star rating. However, according to the Good Reads rating system that means I don't like the book. Since I didn't like it enough to finish it? Anyways, others love it so give it a try. This is just my opinion.
