Nothing can turn your world upside down faster than someone asking for your help.

When I answered my door, the last thing I expected was a vampire. I probably should have asked before I invited him in. But what's done is done. He wasn't looking for his next meal, he was looking for a savior. His clan was being hunted by rogue witches out for their blood and we were all that could save them.

Me, being me, jumped right in to be the hero. The rest of the clan thought I was insane for wanting to help vampires. Especially the chief of police, who just happens to be one of my lovers. He wasn't exactly wrong either. I should have known they would shift their sights from the vampires to us.

What's a witch to do? Save the clan, save the coven, and save the day. Couple's therapy could come later. If we all survive…

Second Blood is an adult novel intended for mature audiences only. It contains graphic language and sexual situations. 18+ readers only! This is a medium burn reverse harem where the girl gets all the guys. Why Choose?

I enjoyed this more than book 1 as Dot's recklessness leads to more action in her new home
Vampires show up looking for assistance and Dot seeks her mother's aid
She once again gets injured as she seeks to protect the new members of her coven
Dot accidentally acquires a familiar that brings unexpected changes
The chief acts like an idiot sometimes

Enjoying this series so far

I love this series

I love this so much! I am a huge fan of RH and was nicely surprised how this one cought me! The relationships are not rushed... There is a lot of foreplay that I absolutely love and is super hot...way before the main event! I don't like slow TH but this one is super steamy all the way through! Yummy yummy! I can't wait to read the next one and as where this coven and wonderful family go next! They are growing. The coven, the town and my love of this series! Yay Jacquelyn thank you thank you thank you

Mini Review Thoughts

Much like the first story, same likes and same problems.

Good things first - story keeps you reading, can be hard to put down, we get more new characters who are likable. There's a few arguments as people get used to each other, like the Chief. We get better sides of Jason and some working opportunities. I like the vampires and where that could be going story-wise. Not sure what I think on the familiar stuff just yet. Humor is abundant as before.

On negative side - The sexual awkwardness from the first book continues but it's even worse the second time around. The kinks aren't my thing and the author focuses on them a lot - if you put the long, pages long scenes together, may end up a few chapters worth of this book that's not 200 pages. I'm still not feeling an actual connection with the characters romantically that makes sense this fast and it mainly just seems like bizarre, cheesy writing with these scenes. Dropped my enjoyment of the books a lot.

That said, her mother is funny stuff, and I still like the world building. Besides some of the mentally cringe-worthy sex scenes which bugged me, the story was hard to put down, although slightly inconsistent and with some errors. There is a lot of physical stuff without the emotional connection worked into it, which bores me.

Where is the plot?

This series definitely needs some editing, I’m seeing a lot of typos, which distract from the story. I am liking this series, but it’s a bit slow, and she still hasn’t picked up anyone else for her harem. There are hints, but...idk it wasn’t until the end that I saw another prospect.

This particular book is missing a significant plot, I mean it’s there but it’s pretty....thin. The premise is to help the vampires that showed up at the end of the last book, which of course she does. But people get mad at her, things happen, this and that...but not much. There are rogue witches after the vamps so Dot will help them. She gets them all set up and the rogue witches get the upper hand. And the showdown was a bit...meh.

However even with that being said I still find myself interested with the story, interested in Dot’s life and how this town will shape up. I do think the story has a great foundation, it just needs to be a bit more polished.

Entertaining enough

I keep reading, ignoring typos and grammatical errors, hoping that the story becomes more connected to me. The lack of internal, meaningful thoughts of Dot is driving me to the point where I'll give it one more book, then I'm done if there isn't a change. The dialogue is good, but have a hard time following with all the ping ponging. I just wish Dot thought more indepthly. Instead the reader gets a constant barrage of everything physical and virtually nothing emotional tying us in. Sigh. One more book... I have hope. I wish it to take a turn for the better in fulfilling my desire to have that connection to the story. Right now, nothing is endearing me to it.

I really love Dot, and while I get why the coven was nervous, I don't get why they'd be surprised. She didn't know them at all, and yet jumped in to help them in the last book ... how could they not realize this is her personality? She's driven to help. It's why she is who she is.

I also liked that she didn't take shit from Chief, who ... honestly, I was thrown by the fact that he seemed to have a personality transplant in this book. I felt like his temper came out of left field, and some of the things he was saying were just so utterly wrong that I was pissed at him. She's not responsible for anything that happened in the last book, and she didn't "nearly get 3 coven members killed", as he accused. People were being murdered for years, and murders were happening even as she arrived in town, and for Chief to put any of that on her made me want to punch him in the throat. She didn't cause the problem, she solved it. He's a complete douche for suggesting otherwise. I don't care what caused the extreme reaction - though it was nice to get some explanation - it isn't acceptable. And so I was relieved that it wasn't acceptable to Dot either. Though she forgave him a little quickly, imo. If he does it again, I hope she lights him on fire.

This one didn't have a mystery element, but the introduction of rogue witches was fun. I'd like to understand more of what's up with that.

Anyway, all-in-all, these books are cute and hilarious (as in, I totally embarrassed myself at the coffee shop because I burst into laughter) quick reads.

Freakin' amazing

Another great book in this series. I love Dot and her coven. This book is actionpacked with another problem solved in the book, and the larger plot is developing at the perfect pace. More characters are being introduced and we can see how Dot's plans for the town might actually work with Ashville as an example. There's another great hook to make us want to read the next book, not that it's mandatory at this point, since the author has got me (and a lot of others) hooked by this point.

Great book!

Book two in this series was just as enjoyable of a read as book one. I love the characters chemistry and camaraderie. When the new characters were introduced, it didn't feel forced, it was just the natural flow of the story and it fits perfectly. I love the one liners, the natural progression of the story and let's not forget the Dinner scene 😉

What started out as a Coven Potluck ended with a surprise visitor and new paranormals in Cedar Falls. Vampires. Their clan is in trouble. They are being hunted and killed by rogue witches and he came for help which Dot agreed to without hesitation. This puts a target on her coven as well anger her police chief boyfriend. However, it's not in Dot's nature to turn away anyone in need.

This series truly reminds me of a lighthearted, fun adventure show. The Misadventures of Dot, the Wayward High Priestess. It's silliness is addictive. I realized early on in this book how fond I am of this town and its residents. Bill's grumpy need for control, Jimmy's quirks, Josie and her tiny fae-witch girlfriend with their snuggle addiction, Herb and Marge the adoptive parents we all wish for have all welcomed me into Cedar Falls to be part of their lives. The vampires add a new layer into this new human/paranormal haven. I plan to have breakfast at the diner and grab a steak at Bunyen's, I look forward to the bookstore opening and I may have an emergency needing the fire department and the police chief on site!

Once again the story itself was entertaining. There's so much that you see coming but then delightful or ridiculous twists are thrown in. They make everything better. That ending was definitely unexpected, although it seems to be a signature of this series that a shocker comes with the doorbell at each last meal. I'm interested to see if that continues or if the remaining cliffhangers will come in other forms. I personally hope they all come during dinner! Since I read this second book in one setting, I need to get book 3.

It was a chill reading session with this book, something that's done within a few hours and doesn't have anything emotionally draining.

I have to admit, the plot is weaker than the first book. I feel like the vamp thing stayed out of focus despite having the whole storyline around them. The lack of confrontational scenes with the bad dudes leaves me uninvested towards the plot; off the pages attack scenes don't count. I was motoring on solely for the interactive scenes. Just like the first book, there was easy and funny dialogues that made it a breeze to read. As much as the end fight scene was nice, it was brief.

The second book dials up the humping factor with space given to scenes to show Dot and her guys getting it on. I was surprised to see it took almost till the end to see another potential harem member. I'm not wowed over with the romance but it was nice to see her not taking bullshit from Bill.

The story may not have been that engaging but I'm still curious towards Dot and the various side characters involved.

Good
Great read.
Steady world-building thru out.
Descriptions of settings, characters, ect are detailed enough to picture without interrupting or taking over the story.
Characters are individual and entertaining.
Love that the main female character doesn't take any shit.
Love that the main female character doesn't shy away from getting her hands dirty when needed.
Enjoyable relationship building.
Entertaining smut.
The humor makes the books. Laugh out loud funny.

Bad
Uncomfortable with the main female character being so much of the focus of her best friend's girlfriend and the physical nature of it. Find it weird and creepy. And the explanation is inconsistent, given you don't see the coven's married couples coming over to snuggle Dot in bed.
Uncomfortable with the only main non-white character becoming, in essence, a slave to the main female character.

Hmmm

I loved this book the first time I read it... But now as I re-read as a refresher it just isn’t awesome.

Dot seems to flash her money quite a bit and while she uses words like she is coy, or like she just doesn’t get why everyone wants to be close to her, the ease that she takes the attention makes it seem fake.

I mean I don’t care how cute a fairy girl is, if I found her in my bed, hugging my leg, head on my stomach? I wouldn’t just pat her head and go pee.

There are sexy times but no real diving into character development or emotion. More like bland insta-love.

The snark is funny, the world building is pretty awesome and I am hoping since this is only book 2 that as I continue to re-read it becomes the book series I remember loving.

Not your traditional harem

Most reverse harems seem to have the harem as a unit bit this series is more like one woman with more than one boyfriend and the men are ok with the open relationship. Really enjoy the story of the coven and the town even though this isn't my typical kind of harem plot.

Alright I know I haven't given it enough time, but book 1 was a struggle and so I thought ill try book 2.

But seriously, I'm bored stiff.

I feel no chemistry between the h and HH's. Nada. Add in a plodding plot, corny dialogue and I cant any more.

The premise is good, perfect super powerful witch whos rich as fuck builds her harem.

Just not working though. I'm done.

I like this author, she writes most of her females in a nice way, with rooms for both relationships and female friendships without falling into the overly catty and jealous side.
The magic system seems fun, and so do the characters.
I might get these in "actual" book form if I enjoy the entire series.

This book was another good story, but there are a lot of errors that take me out of it. Wrong names being used, names spelled differently, grammar errors. I’ll still be reading the next book.

Vampire Beginnings

Book two, the introduction of vampires into the world. Honestly, my biggest complaint about this book is that I was promised vampires, but they don’t really have a lot of speaking roles and for the most part they are kind of asleep most of the book. I get the feeling this book was just the set up for more vampire contributions to the town of Cedar Falls in the future, since it seems like they are setting up a vampire clan in the town for sanctuary.
Dot is once again a character that totally works for me. She is still ever the woman willing to help anyone in need. Jimmy really helps to bring out parts of herself that she didn’t even realize she had. I think one of the reasons I like Jimmy and Dot is because Jimmy helps Dot grow into herself while at the same time super trusts her and is the definition of supportive.
When it comes to Dot and Chief though, right now I don’t really know what he actually brings to the table in terms of relationships. I think he’s a solid member of the coven, I think he’s a good cop, but he also seems to think he get more say that anyone else in the coven and is almost on equal ground with Dot, who was literally anointed by the Lady. He also has this terrible habit of striking out at Dot verbally in front of other people and really cutting her to the bone. And it’s always I’m sorry, this is why I did it, and she forgives him. He needs to step up or I’m gonna punch him in the face.
The vampire storyline was interesting, the coven is growing, we are getting more characters and more personality, overall it was a solid read.

So much to love about this book

This second book in a series is as good as the first, if not better because now we know the main characters a little more than we did in the first book.

The new First Moon Coven is getting established at vampires have come to ask for help. The vampires have been attacked by rogue witches who want to drain their blood for spells forbidden by the goddess. Dot jumps into helping them straight away, which causes problems in the coven. They all have to find a way to work together with a very different high priestess than they had before. Bill’s deceased wife was a very easy going and lacked the drive and determination that Dot has. It’s going to take a little getting used to.

This book sees the coven start to gain new allies, from back home in Asheville, so the human inhabitants of Cedar Falls. Dot is determined to protect her coven, the vampires and her new home town, no matter the cost.

This book really builds of the relationships between the coven members, not just between Dot and her two lovers, Bill and Jimmy, but also between Candace and Josie and how they relate to Dot. We also get to know a little about the other members of the coven. All the characters are well defined and developed and I know I’m going to enjoy seeing where everything goes in the future, especially with Jimmy’s kinky self letting fly! There are quite a lot of hot scenes in this book, but the plot is still very strong and along with the world building and character development drives the book along at a cracking rate.

A really enjoyable read, especially if you like a little heat with your urban fantasy!

Great 2nd book

I was right in my last review; it seems like maybe each book will have its own little storyline and plot that will ultimately be wrapped up by the end of the book. I enjoy that format as much as the polar opposite format of one massive dramatic plot line spanning over several books. This allows for no cliffhangers and if I wanted to, I could walk away from this series now and still feel somewhat satisfied (not that I want to or plan to walk away).

I still love Dot as a character. She is flirty with her men but fiercely protective and loyal. The way the author has written her makes it easy for me to see how well she fits into the role of High Priestess. Her relationships are progressing well with just a few new relationship hiccups with the Chief. It’s still seems to be mainly a ménage but I know this is an RH but we haven’t quite seen that come to fruition yet.

I am excited to read the next book in the series to find out what else is going to come Dot’s way as she works to build up her new coven and new town.

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

Good Book

Second Blood continues Dot’s story from the first book and dealing with the consequences of the vampire showing up at her door at the end of the last book. This book saw Dot’s relationships begin to progress as well as adding a few possible future love interests. I enjoyed the story, not only the part relating to rogue witches but also the progression that was made on Dot’s vision for the town. I love the banter between Dot and the other characters which often had me smiling and laughing. Overall, it was an enjoyable book and I found it readable. I would recommend giving it a read.

Pretty good book

I was really surprised with this book. Normally I am not a fan of series where the main problem is solved in each book, but with this series it seems to work without lacking any details. I enjoy all the different characters and how they interact with each other, and the relationships that are formed. The main story flows perfectly from book to book and the mini stories within such as the main drama in each book does not harm or detract from the over all story and characters

The fun continues!

Once again the heroine, Dot, has more challenges to face as she makes a new life for herself. Adding vampires to the list, and along with them a group of rogue witches, something is constantly happening! Not one dull moment! On top of that, she is still dealing with her growing relationships with the men in her love life and the "entertainment" they provide. Good thing she is a strong woman and witch! I loved this book! Looking forward to the next installment!

I don’t know why I put this series off for so long, but I’m so glad I started it. It’s so well written and the dialogue is absolutely fantastic. I’ve never laughed so hard with a book. They way Dot and Josie interact reminds me of the way my friends and I speak with each other. I cannot recommend this series enough. Also the sexy times are sooooo freakin’ hot. Do yourself a favor and dive in to this series!
