A Dog's Promise continues the story of Bailey, the good dog whose journey started in A Dog's Purpose and continued in A Dog's Journey (both major motion pictures). This time, Bailey is joined by Lacey, another very special dog, who helps Bailey fulfill his promise over the course of several lives.
This charming, wise canine soul brings joy, laughter, and comfort as he unites a family fractured by life's inevitable obstacles. The love and loyalty of these two memorable dogs shows us the incredible power of hope, truth, and unending devotion in this moving novel by award-winning author W. Bruce Cameron.

I’ve always loved dogs, which puts me in a unique category along with what, maybe two or three billion people?
What’s not to love about an animal who will sit in your living room all day long, waiting for you to get home, and even if you need to work late and then stop for a stress-relieving beverage on your way home, when you unlock that front door, is absolutely overjoyed to see you? How could you not adore an animal who senses when your day is not going well and tries to cheer you up by dumping a sodden tennis ball in your lap?
I was probably 8 years old, playing in the back yard of our house in Prairie Village, KS, when my dad opened the gate and in rushed a 9-week-old Labrador puppy. I fell to my knees and spread my arms and that dog leaped into them as if we had loved each other our whole lives. It’s a scene that shows up in A Dog’s Purpose—a puppy and a boy meeting each other the very first time, both of them full of unrestrained joy.
We named the dog Cammie. She arrived in my life when I was just beginning to connect some of the dots in my memory to make a picture of who I was, forming my identity as a child. I remember every skinned knee and bicycle ride in the context of Cammie, who was always there for me. And I lost her just as I was starting to leave childhood behind, passing on after I’d spent a year in college. That’s Cammie, the dog of my childhood.
Years later I was riding my bicycle in the mountains outside of Pine, CO. A chance decision to bounce down a dirt road led me past a few scattered ranches and one small house near a creek, set back from the road at least 50 yards. A single “woof” from a dog caught my attention, and I braked and stood in the dry, clear air, regarding the dog who had called out to me.
She was on a chain by the house, and a fence stood between us, so I remained on the road even though I could see that the dog, a black lab mix with a crazily active tail, was clearly friendly. I gazed at her and the dog sat, attentive, staring into my eyes exactly the way my first dog, Cammie, used to look at me, really seeing into me.
And that’s when the thought hit me. What if this wonderful dog was Cammie? What if dogs live over and over again, and always remember us?
I dismissed the thought, waved at the dog, and rode away, but days later the idea came back to me. What if?
I’ve been a writer my whole life, but never have I ever written anything as important as A Dog’s Purpose.
I can’t promise you that A Dog’s Purpose will make you love your dog more—how could it do that? But I’ll tell you what a lot of people have told me: after reading A Dog’s Purpose, you’ll never look at your dog the same way again.
Bailey’s back! At the behest of Ethan, our loyal and dear Bailey comes back from dog heaven to help mediate between two feuding brothers, Ethan’s grandchildren. Starting from service dog, to regular dog, and many lives between, Bailey is determined to fulfill Ethan’s promise and help Burke and Grant patch things up, no matter how many lives it takes.
Before I started this book I was thinking. It all closed so beautifully in book #2, why ruin such a perfectly good ending? And after finishing this I was thinking. Man I was right! But don’t get me wrong, it’s still a great book, anyone who reads it is surely to enjoy it. Bailey is as lovable as always, and through its many lives and reincarnations we get to love him each time more. I specially loved seeing Bailey and Lacey back together again, and how their relationship unfolded for them. Just beautiful.
Still, I must say even though all the main ingredients were there, I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as the first two. So be warned. And there’s a sort of cliffhanger for a book #4, so of course, I’m sure to read that too. A fifth book? Hand it in. I never really learned when to quit.
I own a cat btw.
-------------------------------- PERSONAL NOTE: So I say to myself. Buddy, it’s been a year. Maybe let them know you are still alive? So. Here I am. Alive. Didn’t get covid. Yet. Reading poorly. Gaming plenty. Working. Single. No kids. Got vaccinated recently. Do I plan to review ever again? Yes. More often, maybe? Also yes. Possibly. Hoping to move to monthly. Or even weekly. If I ever get my reading mojo back. I have a bunch of reviews of stuff I’ve read before Goodreads existed. I may or may not upload them sporadically. So that’s it. It’s a crazy world out there. Take care. Read well. Stay safe. [2019] [384p] [Dog Novel] [Lovely] [Almost Recommendable] [Immortal Bailey] [Beautiful Lacey] -----------------------------------------------
-------------------------------- NOTA PERSONAL: Entonces me digo a mí mismo. Pibe, ya pasó un año. Tal vez podrías avisarles que todavía seguís vivo? Así que acá estoy. Vivo. No tuve covid. Todavía. Leyendo poco. Jugando mucho. Trabajando. Soltero. Sin hijos. Me vacunaron recientemente. Planeo reseñar algún día otra vez? Sí. Más a menudo, tal vez? Sí también. Posiblemente. Esperando pasar a mensualmente. O incluso semanalmente. Lean bien. Que estén bien. So I did read this novel more than once, and have a lot of very strong opinions about it.
First, it seems to me the author is losing his hair. He keeps combing it to try to hide this incipient baldness, but I’m not buying it.
Plus, he’s never been particularly attractive, but since he went on this big “diet” he talks incessantly about, he’s been opening the refrigerator and stuffing cheese in his mouth. He’s gained about ten very unsightly pounds.
When he sneaks the cheese, he creeps around, not making any noise, but someone by now must have noticed that we’re down about 12 ounces of cheese every day plus a commensurate amount of crackers. Oh, and what happened to that slice of apple pie that he put in the refrigerator for “later?” Later was like four minutes.
Worse, he gets his dog Tucker in on the cheese embezzlement, so now they are both tip-toeing around at night. Tucker gets a very tiny piece of cheese.
Now that we’ve dispatched with my complaints about this author, let me tell you about my problems with A Dog’s Promise.
First, it is really intense! Bailey Bailey Bailey is now an angel dog, sent back to the farm to help a boy with special needs. The plot twists keep it paced like a thriller, and the point of view of the dog has matured because this particular canine has a wise, old soul from having been reborn so many times.
Cameron, the balding fat author, clearly loves dogs and feeds them cheese.
This novel takes place in the near future, which makes sense because when the second novel in the A Dog’s Purpose series, A Dog’s Journey, ended, we were basically already a few years in the future already—by which time it can be assumed the author will have eaten a lot more pie, since he bought one and stuck it in the fridge behind a bowl of lettuce, like that’s going to fool anyone. So in the near future, we see that Hannah’s daughter Rachel is now a grandmother, and her son Chase owns Ethan’s farm. And we know this because our angel dog finds his way there.
Bailey has a purpose that not even he knows about—just like I have no idea what the author’s purpose is, other than snacking out of the refrigerator. But it’s an extraordinarily important purpose, so important that Ethan has sent Bailey back over the rainbow bridge to fulfill it.
I forgot about another complaint I have about this author, which is that he never follows the same formula twice. The second book in the series, A Dog’s Journey, had a very different structure than A Dog’s Purpose. And this one, A Dog’s Promise, completely changes conventions again.
Here’s a note from the author:
Hi, I’m Bruce, I don’t eat cheese every night, I am not going bald, and the pie wasn’t even that good. I want to ask you a favor, which is: if you think you are going to want to read A Dog’s Promise at some point, would you please consider pre-ordering it? Publishing has changed, in that pre-orders are considered pretty much the whole game, like opening weekend for a movie.
You can purchase from any online vendor, you can visit your local bookstore, and even more fun, I am going to be visiting a lot of book stores in October. You can pre-order the book from any one of those stores, and tell them you want it personalized. As in, “For Sally, the best sister in the world.”
Because we are headed into a season where gift-giving is common, this would be a great way to take care of some of the people on your list. And, of course, take care of yourself—do you want a signed, personalized, first edition of A Dog’s Promise?
Even better: pre-order a book from any of the stores listed, and I will personally give 20% of the cover price to Best Friends Animal Society.
Thank you for doing this, for following my reviews and for supporting authors. Let’s keep books alive! -- Bruce (list of stores follows)

I admit to being a total sucker for dog stories; there are many good ones out there, and the first two of Cameron's series are no exception. I liked this one less only in comparison. Bailey, in his new incarnations, and the other dogs are just as lovely and engaging as ever. It's the humans in this third book that I found less sympathetic and authentic, and it is the human plot that seems somewhat contrived and implausible. Nevertheless, I was happy to read it to complete Bailey's story.
I remember the first time I read “A Dog’s Purpose”, the first in the series of three books written by W. Bruce Cameron about a dog named Bailey. The book had just come out and it was revolutionary in that it was narrated by a dog and gave insight into how dogs view the world and the people around them. At the time, I was a new dog person, having adopted my first pup several years before and had added a second one to our family. My dogs were still young then and I wasn’t thinking about the end of their lives. I loved the book for the narrative and the possibilities of my dogs and I understanding each other on a different level.
Through the years, I thought often about the book as my dogs aged and I realized my time with them was short. “A Dog’s Journey” followed “A Dog’s Purpose” and I loved the continuing saga of the dog originally known as Bailey. By the time the “A Dog’s Purpose” movie came to theaters, I was reeling from the loss of my original dog only seven months before. When we lost her, I immediately thought of the lessons I had learned through the two Cameron books I had read and was certain I would be meeting my pup again some day. The books were cathartic to me - they offered a healing I hadn’t expected.
I had hoped that Cameron’s second book in the series, “A Dog’s Journey” wasn’t the end of the saga. After all, one thing I’ve learned to believe is that the end isn’t truly the end. So, I was excited to learn that “A Dog’s Promise” was in the works and even more excited that I received an Advanced Reader’s copy from the publisher.
Without spoiling the end of “A Dog’s Journey” for those who haven’t discovered it yet, “A Dog’s Promise” does continue the life of the original Bailey, now having been known by many other names throughout his lives. Centered on one extended family rather than the multiple families within the prior two books, “A Dog’s Promise” fulfills a directive from Ethan, Bailey’s “boy”. The book contains all the warmth and emotion I’ve come to expect from W. Bruce Cameron along with life lessons, heartache and heartbreak, family challenges, misunderstandings and reconciliations. Some of society’s hotbed issues are included, giving insight and awareness without being preachy. There are surprises throughout but Cameron saves the main ones for the end of the book which wraps the story in a beautiful bow. With a wink and a smile, Bailey has, indeed, both found his Purpose and kept his Promise. It’s a lovely story and another reminder of the important roles that dogs play in our lives. I’m recommending this book to those who have read and loved Cameron’s other books in the series. To those who haven’t yet found the series, I recommend starting with “A Dog’s Purpose” which makes the reading of “A Dog’s Promise” that much more poignant.
I've never seen the movies or read any of these books. That will all change now! I fell in love with this title about a special dog. I loved the story and what it stood for and can't wait to read more.
“There they were … everyone I’d ever loved in my life. … I was a good dog, and this was my reward. Now I would get to be with the people I loved. I turned, whimpering with joy, and swam toward those golden shores.” – Conclusion of “A Dog’s Journey,” the second of three novels in W. Bruce Cameron's series ---- Seven years ago, W. Bruce Cameron concluded “A Dog’s Journey,” the sequel to his beloved “A Dog’s Purpose,” so lovingly, so perfectly that it left readers not only pleased with the result but grateful for the path they’d dutifully followed. Since that time, both of Cameron’s best-selling novels have made their way to the silver screen, with “A Dog’s Purpose” becoming a global hit and one of the biggest dog-themed movies of all time. The story of Bailey and Buddy and of Toby and Molly and of Ellie and Max, and of so many other dogs, had come to a beautiful ending, so it was surprising when it was announced that there would be a third installment in the series. Where could Cameron take his story, the regenerated lives of more good dogs, more devoted best friends? And how many boxes of Kleenex would be required once again? Well, it’s all about the purpose of a dog – again, but, this time, Cameron’s canine hero gets a specific request to find his new purpose. To do so, however, he must leave those “golden shores” where he had found an eternal opportunity to romp with all the humans he’s ever loved. Loyalty is the key to a good dog’s life, so once again – and over several lifetimes – Cameron’s devoted canine narrates another novel. If it still sounds familiar, that’s because it is; gloriously so, in fact. Cameron’s uncanny ability to write from the viewpoint of a dog remains intact. Being a good dog is still the ultimate goal. And bacon is still king. The author’s newfound take on his tried-and-true tale develops into a surprisingly fast-paced novel that follows two families (readers will quickly sense familiarity) and the dogs who love them. Cameron uses his latest novel to not only entertain but to draw attention to the rights of people who need service dogs, as well as abused dogs in need of rehab, and he meshes it all seamlessly with the ongoing plot. On this journey, the dogs – along with sharply drawn human characters – find a promised purpose in a story of love, duty and redemption. And there’s lots of humor, often in short, delightful bursts. As usual, Cameron pushes his story along from the mind and watchful eyes of the novel’s beloved canine hero(es). The dogs are completely dedicated to their humans – and to getting as many treats as possible, of course. Devotion is, in fact, at the heart of this heartwarming novel. At 384 pages, “A Dog’s Promise” is the longest of Cameron’s three books in the series. I thought Cameron’s conclusion to “A Dog’s Journey” was a brilliant culmination of his inspired story. For the ending of “A Dog’s Promise,” he summed it all up in three words. I was so delighted with those three words that I kept reading them again and again and again. Just three perfect words left no doubt that Cameron is a masterful storyteller. (Note: I received an advance copy of the book for my unbiased review.)
I must be a strange sight to behold when I read one of Bruce Cameron’s books — at some inevitable point, I’m sure to be rather ridiculously fanning my face with a stray postcard or travel brochure, making a frantic and futile attempt at preventing mascara from uncontrollably spilling out of my eyes and smearing down my cheeks, thus betraying an otherwise composed and well-polished poker face. (Guess that’s what I get for not using the waterproof kind.)
Being a longtime fan of the author’s work, I knew in reading this latest installment of the beloved A Dog’s Purpose series — A Dog’s Promise is the third book — my limbic brain would be traversing a wide breadth of diverse responses along the emotional spectrum. I knew I could count on equal measures of grace, wisdom, insight, hope, excitement, adventure, humor, delight, laughter, inspiration, and certainly more than just a few tears.
I anticipated how many or perhaps even all of these reactions would be impacting my heart almost simultaneously, like the dizzying crescendo of light and sound in the grand finale of a fireworks show. I knew we as readers would be leaping tall feelings in a single bound, wholeheartedly loving every minute of it, relishing every finely nuanced step of the journey through the familiar yet thrilling world this author so beautifully paints with his words.
I’ll try and quit while I’m (hopefully) ahead here with the metaphors, it’s 3 am for me and if I stay awake one minute longer, I’m going to pass out and slump over face-first into my computer screen, smearing tear-stains of happily liquified mascara literally everywhere.
And okay, I have to admit: I also knew A Dog’s Promise would be the finest and most rewarding installment of the ADP series yet. Not because I’m some kind of psychic, but because It’s essentially just what we’ve come to expect from a book written by W. Bruce Cameron. Which is to say: the very best. A wonderful read, a story so totally worth the complete and utter ruinous annihilation of my carefully applied makeup.
No cudo po prostu.
As an original fan of A Dog's Purpose I have been lucky enough once again to be given an ARC by the amazing publisher of W. Bruce Cameron.
I have to say, as much as I love this author, as much as I love the movies that get made from his books (A Dog's Journey, which is A Dog's Purpose #2 is easily the best of the three movies) I had some trepidation. I thought to myself, will I be tired of hearing the ongoing adventures of Bailey, Bailey, Bailey which I thought had come to a happy ending at the end of book and movie #2 in the A Dog's Purpose series?
Well I should have had more faith in my favorite author, I can tell you that. In this book, he manages to change the rules of the game yet again for Bailey the Angel Dog. There were surprises and as usual laughs and tears loud enough for me to bother other passengers on the train to work.
And on the last page, I literally, "SQUEEEEEED!" out loud!
You'll get no plot spoilers from me. I'm actually hoping that I'm going to be able to tell the author all of this in person because I looked on his Facebook page and he's going on a big book tour and one of the events is a not-so-long car ride from me. Me and my friend are road-trippin' it and I could NOT BE MORE EXCITED!
I had a mixture of good feelings at certain times during the book, but I also had conflicting feelings for the hard and confusing life of the dog who carried memories of its former life/lives into the current one. I don’t want to Imagine that this could really be how it is; Existing to only help humans with their painful situations and then the dog dies (yes, they are horrible deaths) only to be “reincarnated” when they are needed by humans again.
During the good feelings, I was enjoying playfully thinking my dog, Baylee, was a reincarnation of my previous German short haired pointers; Augie, Shadow, Snickers. But then it hit me that in the story, the dog(s) never lived through to their old age, passing on their own, and always had “a purpose.” Do all dogs have to have a purpose in life? Can a dog just be...a dog?
This book left me with unanswered questions and some irritations. I thought i was reading a “feel good” dog book but with each dog reincarnation and name change, I felt like I was reading some sort of presto-change-o magic act. This is how I feel after reading this book 😑
A Dog’s Promise is a sequel to A Dog’s Journey. I didn’t know that until after I finished, but it reads well as a stand alone. This is a marvellously written book, entirely from a dog’s point of view. It makes you question some of your own actions as seen through a loyal dog’s eyes. The book spans many dog years as well as human years and as life does, animals and people age, get sick or hurt and we lose them to death. It’s very sad, but it’s God’s plan. I felt a ton of different emotions as I smiled, felt goosebumps rise in my skin and tears springing to my eyes. I think this book made me more appreciative of my life and those who surround me.
I don’t know if I believe in reincarnation, but I can’t say it is or is not God’s plan.
This book is deeply emotional and beautifully written. I an so thankful to Netgally for the opportunity to read this ARC.
Well, as I sit here crying, and wondering why I read this book, knowing that this would happen... Cameron’s “A Dog’s Purpose” series is delightful, touching, heart-warming and heart-breaking. Anyone who has ever owned, loved and cared for a dog knows that at some point there will be a sad ending. If you have lived as long as I have, there probably have been several of these events. My family just lost Panda, our 15-year-old Border Collie family member. It was difficult and painful for each of us. I absolutely want it to be true that “dogs can come back.” I will wait.
I am so grateful to NetGalley for the ARC of this novel! I love all of W. Bruce Cameron's novels, so I was very excited to read the third book in the Dog's Purpose series. It was just as I expected and then some. Beautifully written, I laughed, I cried (several times), I gasped. It was such a wonderful story. I don't want to give away any spoilers, so I'll just say that it ends by wrapping everything up like a Christmas present and plops a big bow right on top. Fantastic!
This book was received as an ARC from Macmillan-Tor/Forge - Forge Books in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
Being a huge fan of a Dog's purpose and a Dog's Journey and Bailey is such a heartwarming dog that you could not help but follow Bailey along in his adventures and see the joy he brings to everyone he meets. This time he is joined by Lacey who is just as sweet if not a sweeter dog than Bailey and Bailey stops at nothing to protect and look out for Lacey and have them take the journey together making a difference in people's lives. I love the message this series has created and a dog's promise does a wonderful job reflecting that. I know our community will love and be looking forward to the release of a dog's promise and wonder when the release of the movie will be as well.
We will consider adding this title to our Adult Fiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
I was provided an ARC for review. All thoughts expressed are my own.
I absolutely love this series. It's great to think a loved dog will come back to us over and over again to help us through life, and through the next generations. That's exactly what Bailey does, or should I say Cooper as that was his first name in this book.
A Dog's Promise made me laugh and cry. Cooper is a dog meant to help people, whether emotionally upset or needing physical assistance. He saves families and lives. Cooper/Bailey is a good dog.
I highly encourage all dog lovers to read this series. You can read this as a standalone, but I recommend starting with A Dog's Purpose for the full emotional impact on how special this dog truly is.
And don't forget to check out the wonderful movies, which will also make you cry your eyes out in both sad and happy tears!
Even though the book’s writing does not blow you away, the simpleness of it is endearing. And even though it seems repetitive and predictable at times...it still has that way of sucking you in and not letting go...Plus, I’m a sucker for creative and funny dog books :-) Great ending, very full circle story. Would read another one of these books in a heartbeat.
I HAVE BEEN NEEDING THIS BOOK SINCE THE DAY I GOT TO KNOW OF IT. I AM SCREAMING WITH ULTIMATE HAPPINESS RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!! ALSO, THAT HUSKY IS TOO CUTE TO BE TRUE.
Thank you so much to Pan Macmillan for providing me with a copy of A Dog's Promise, in exchange for an honest review!
Bailey has been asked to go back to being born a puppy again to help a family who desperately need it. When he meets his new owner, a boy in a wheelchair, he works hard to learn all the jobs he needs to do to help him - with his life in his chair, relationships, school and growing up. Because that's what dogs do. This time, he also meets a special dog friend of his own, Lacey. He would know Lacey anywhere - even if they have to find each other in different dog bodies along the way.
Once again, told through the voice of the insightful, funny and sweet dog at the centre of the story, A Dog's Promise lives up to the rest of the series as a wonderful book about dogs and their humans. Both heartbreaking and heartwarming, these books have been some of my absolute favourites. The way the author gives voice to Bailey and the thought processes Bailey uses, are exactly the way I picture my own dog thinking I still haven't been brave enough to watch any of the movies that have been released, based on the books, yet (especially while owning an ageing dog myself) because I suspect I'll be a sobbing mess AGAIN.
If you're a dog lover who hasn't started the A Dog's Purpose series, I'd highly recommend gathering them all up, sitting on the couch with your dog and a box of tissues, and devouring them all.
This book was received as an ARC from Macmillan-Tor/Forge - Forge Books in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is the third book in A Dog’s Purpose series. And just like the first two I loved it.
Bailey is back! But this time, he doesn’t remember anything! But that is okay. It was great to see Bailey start all over. This time with a new boy who really needs his help.
Burke is paralyzed from the waist down, since birth. And his father, Chase, gets him a dog to help him and make him feel more “normal”. Burke trains his new dog, Cooper, to do it all! Assist, steady, Get It, Stay, and just how to be a service dog.
Just like the other books there are some trials and tribulations for Cooper. But it always adds to the story.
There was even romance! Human and dog a like. In the end A Dog’s Promise was just as beautiful as the first two. It might even be, dare I say, the best one? I think I do dare say that!
I do hope there will be a fourth one. With they way this ended, that has to be more! I need more in my life
I am very much a dog lover and dog book lover, and Mr. Cameron 's books are the best. I have read all the Dog Purpose books and this one was the best!! It was so good to see Bailey, Ethan and family again. There was romance, family issues and amazing dogs. I highly recommend this book and all Mr. Cameron 's dog books. They will bring a tear to your eye and smile to your face :)
3.5 stars The chapters don’t always end/start at logical points and the scenes change quite abruptly. Also, why did Bailey previously remember his former lives, but not anymore? But what’s more: I love stories about animals, especially when told by the animal itself, and I know that this series is about the purpose of a (good) dog, but why, why does it have to have so much sadness and death? I love Bailey but I must say I’m happy this is the last book in the series. I’ve cried enough! The 3rd instalment in this series follows the adventures and hardships as also told in the first two instalments. There was not much new and therefore I was ready to give it 3 stars. The last 50 pages and Bruce's afterword convinced me to give it one more star.
W. Bruce Cameron has done it again! Another beautifully written, heartwarming installment in the "Dog's Purpose" series. This one finds Bailey being reborn again to fulfill a promise to his beloved human, Ethan. Helping along his journey is his soul mate, Lacey, another very special dog who plays many roles in his quest. This book touched my heart and like the others in the series left me with a sense of love and comfort. By allowing us to see the world from a dog's perspective, it's no surprise that humans could learn more about empathy, kindness and compassion from their canine companions if they just paid attention. I highly recommend it for all who have experienced the joys and sorrows of having a cherished dog.
