What My Oldest Daughter Claudia Believes (at Age 17, on 9 October, 2012)
I believe that honesty is important; however there are some situations where it's better not to say anything at all. Sometimes the truth hurts more.
I believe that religion started as a written story that acted as a code of morals to help people live a good and virtuous life, however some time in history the story got lost in translation over generations and people began to believe that it was true. I believe that I can live a virtuous life without the need to follow the principles of a religion. My parents said this to me only once as a young child, and it is one of the things I have never forgotten and taken to heart. I consider myself an atheist and I do not need a religion or a God to help me through life.
However; even though I do not believe in the story surrounding Christianity and God, I believe that the principles or the Ten Commandments are very important to live a virtuous life – such as: no killing; respect family, friends and neighbours; do not steal; do not commit adultery; do not envy. As long as you have a sense of morals – with or without the help of religion, I believe that you can go far in life.
Similarly, I believe that the fact that there are so many different religions that have different messages trying to compete for our loyalty, means that there is no right and only religion. If there were only one main religion, it confuses me why were more created with each trying to out-do each other. The fact that we do not have one universal religion and world view makes me believe that there is no religion.
I believe that humans have no soul, and instead our consciousness and morality result from our brain and previous experiences.
I believe that there is no life after death and no heaven because we have no soul. When we die, our body decomposes and is returned to the earth where we are recycled into a new organism. I am not scared of dying, as I believe that if you live your life to the fullest every day, you are then able to die a happy and satisfied person.
I only believe in things that have hard facts and scientific proof. I believe in reason over faith.
I believe that it was a fluke of evolution that humans exist and that we are living right now. We have advanced and created to the point where we have been able to support such sophisticated lives. It is the nature of humanity to try to control and manage the environment, to continue to survive. Therefore, this makes me believe that there is no celestial being that controls us.
I believe in the importance of exercise and healthy eating. We have developed over time to become such a sophisticated society, however I find it extremely worrying that people are doing less and less exercise and are no longer concerned about their health and well-being. To me, this seems like a backwards step, as we came from ancestors who were constantly fit in order to survive. I believe that something must be done urgently about obesity because it will eventually cause the destruction of our population. I am passionate about teaching and helping others to live a healthy life.
I believe in striving to perform all tasks given to me to the best of my capabilities and giving everything 100% effort. While it may seem annoying and worthless at the time, I know I will look back on that moment and realise I could have given more. I take this approach in my assignments, study and my sporting life, as I take everything seriously and give it my best shot. That way if I know I’m disappointed with my results, there is nothing to regret on my behalf.
I believe that it is important to get out of the house and do something – either with friends, or just being outside and enjoying the world around me. The world is too beautiful to spend inside sitting on the couch and watching TV. This belief came from me through my mum, as she is extremely active and would rather be doing something interesting with us.
I believe in the value of travelling and experiencing different cultures. It is important to not be narrow-minded, and it also helps appreciate and understand other people, while also realising that the world does not revolve around you. When I leave school, I am travelling to Paris and London with my family; and then I am going on my own trip to Greece and Italy with my friend Emma during the University Holidays, so I get so see more of the world. Similarly to this, I also believe in the value of learning history at schools, because it further teaches you this acceptance of other cultures.
I believe that commitment is important. Whether it be in a team sport and training, or commitment to others in group work; there is always a bigger picture and your attitude will negatively or positively affect somebody else.
I believe that bad things happen, and often they are uncontrollable and just bad luck. However; I think it is important to make the best out of each situation and take a valuable life lesson from it so you are better prepared. Things have happened to me, which at the time felt unbearable, but I found the strength to get through it, and I know that I am a better and more confident person because of it.
I believe in the quote by the Dali Lama, “Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.” To me I find this really appropriate because it is very important to live your life with some flexibility and openness for change, as every day will not be the same and you never what to expect. However; while you should embrace the change, you should still retain the values you believe in, because they never need to change.
I believe in Gay Marriage. Everyone should have the right to love whoever they want, and be able to express this love in a way they choose such as marriage. Everyone is equal, and someone should not be discriminated against because of their sexual preference.

If you want literature, read the King James. If you want poetry, read the King James. If you want inspiration, read the King James.
If you want clarity, read the Good News Bible.
About twenty years ago, for several reasons, I decided I needed to read the Bible in its entirety. The Good News Bible is ideal for such a goal. Its subtitle is "The Bible in Today's English Version", and that's exactly what it is. Translation difficulties and ambiguities in the source texts are frankly acknowledged. Footnotes are plentiful and extremely helpful without being cumbersome.
If you want clarity, read the Good News Bible.

It seems ridiculous to review the bible but I will say that it's filled with wonderful, exciting stories as well as beautiful poetry. Also, many great ideas for how to live.
This edition doesn't capture the poetry as well as (for example) the King James' version, but it is accessible and serviceable.
It was challenging to read the entire work but very rewarding. Especially some of the lesser known books (at least to me) like Joel and Micah were terrific. And it was fascinating to reread Job (along with Jung's analysis).
And for me the New Testament is very meaningful, beautiful, and a guide for my life.

This is the best book ever. I have not finished reading this as compared to the bestseller novels that I own, yet I still read this every night and this is making me feel wonderfully light. This is the greatest book of all!

This edition of Bible is rather awful.
I had this given to me by my church when I was much younger. It was treated as the text book for all religious classes we had.
The language is extremely edited, as is most of the serious content. Not everything that happens in the Bible is all blessings and wine.
There are some very graphic punishments and crimes mentioned. These are not things to be glossed over. If someone is to truly to accept a book as God's word then they should be privy to everything as it was supposed to have happened. The dirt and the grime, the wroth and vengeance.

I rarely read this simplified translation, but since childhood I've liked the small line drawings that are generously spread throughout. What I like is that the illustrations aren't just about major characters or events, but picture the great and the small. In high school, the simplicity of the style even motivated me to try a few of my own to illustate memory verses.

Great book. I recommend it to teens because it's easier to understand. It makes a great study companion to the traditional bible. Read both side by side for help translating the old language into something you can understand.

This is great as an 'introductory' Bible for those who desire to read through the whole Bible a first time.
Don't bash it. Serious students will move on from here to a Study Bible.
Keep in mind, God's Word will not go out and return void;
Isaiah 55:11 Amplified Bible,
11 So shall My word be that goes forth out of My mouth: it shall not return to Me void [without producing any effect, useless], but it shall accomplish that which I please and purpose, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

Obviously, I read Good News for Modern Man in an earlier edition.

The World of God, consisting of the Old and New Testament. Truly the single most profound, important and influential book possessed by Mankind. It is a long and sometimes challenging read, but its merit and rewards are beyond measure. I thank God with all my mind, all my heart and all my soul for finally calling me to read His Word and be closer to His Blessed Omnipotence. As I now read more about Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Father and the Holy Spirit - whilst always returning the Bible throughout the rest of my life - I will try and please Him more by pursuing the good Christian works those who truly respond to His Word ought to be in full and loving devotion to.

I think I started reading the bible around 2 years ago and this lent I said I would finish it, and here I am with 3 days to spare. I'm glad I did it, it's about time. It's amazing how much of the bible we don't get from Sunday school, sermons, and feel good bible studies. It really helped me make since of a lot of things, like how in depth the story of David really is, or what the letters of the New Testament are all about.

I had to read this for a total of eight years. Learned a lot, needed it for a grade, appreciate it more now. But I guess because it is all based on Faith it could be fiction as well. Not sure what shelf to put this in.

It's difficult putting a rating and a review on a translation of the Bible. I will approach it with the clarity in which it is written, the helpful illustrations and maps, and the message it preserves. I made a promise to myself that I would read the whole thing for reasons of application to personal morality choices and cognitive awareness of how other people claim to understand the passages within its pages. For the vast majority of my time digging through this hefty collection of ancient texts I was having a rough time. The language is especially antagonizing and repulsive. But having completed my objective to digest every chapter of every book in this tome I feel like my understanding of Judaism and Christianity is much fuller. As a translation I think it works well. I'm most interested in feeling the personality of each author regardless of whom each one truly was. I can tell a lot from tone, and this really brought that out for my comprehension.

It took me 10+ years to complete the book, as I stopped sometimes in between, but the best part of reading it for me was to improve my focus and reading skills, in comparison I finished the Ramayana and Gita in two weeks as I read them more recently.
It's also the only religious book shared by 3 major world religions (Christianity, Islam and Judaism). Read it only if you have a good reason to read it as it was one of the longest books I read and it takes a while to complete.

Did a reread this month with the goal of making higher level notes for each book — plot/themes, people, dates, places, and popular verses. I am sure I would not have done this had it not been for the pandemic time. I definitely skimmed psalms, proverbs, ancestor lists, and battles, but it was a great experience to read it quickly instead of in detail in small parts like normal.

This is an excellent text of the bible. The verses flow very well. The illustrations are wonderful. The letters are clear and very easy to read. This texts in this Good News Translation varies from the King James Version. I keep it close to me always. It's a great reference to see the consistence of the language in different versions of the Holy Bible.

God Bless Us All. The Good News Bible is an awesome read for everyone. This is my favorite bible to read daily. This is one of the easiest versions to understand and easiest to share and read aloud to other people. Use the Good New Bible for enjoyment and also for understanding. Read next to other versions the Good News Bible is helpful to understand sections like Proverbs and Revelations.

This is a very readable version of the Bible; however, the reader must be aware that the paraphrase has a decided theological bent. Written from a more Arminian perspective, the theology pops up throughout the text. I read this in 60 days and it is very amenable to that level of scrutiny.

My grandma taught our Sunday school out of this one. It was given to every kid who got Baptized in the church too.
By far, probably one of the best translations. Simple, straightforward. Doesn't really talk down to the reader like some bibles written for children. Just a good, simple Bible.

Very useful to those who have never read the Bible. The best part of this book is:
