About the author

Considered by many to be the greatest Puerto Rican playwright of modern times.

Born and raised in the city of Humacao, Puerto Rico. He enrolled in the University of Puerto Rico in 1955, earning a Bachelors of Arts degree. In 1959 he earned a Masters Degree in dramatic arts in City University of New York. He eventually went to Spain and earned his Doctorate in Literature in 1975, from the Complutense University of Madrid.

Sánchez's best known play is La Pasión según Antigona Pérez (The Passion of Antigona Perez), a tragedy set in present-day Latin America, suggested by Sophocles' Antigone.

me dio con leerlo again y there we sooo many things i didn’t remember… env me encanta, obviamente, antígona y su resilencia, pero además me encanta el storyline de irene y fernando y cómo eso básicamente fue el cherry on top + la manera en que ponen a la prensa y su influencia front and center

The way that the author shows how the papers and the publicity trick the civil just makes us think again that we shouldn't believe everything we actually see or read. Perhaps the author is actually trying to make us aware of the situation in the present day. The way that he used the imaginary country that is actually very comparable with some countries of America and the Caribbean is actually really clever. The only thing that I did not like was at the end; I thought that she actually TOLD Creon where she buried them, but then I realized what Luis had been telling us since the beginning the news are all lying to wash our brain and have the attitude they want us to have.

Wich we see a lot, even under our noses...

De todas las versiones contemporáneas de Antígona que he leído (y ya llevo unas cuantas) es, junto con Antígona Vélez, de las que me han resultado más interesantes, justamente por la actualización del personaje a la edad moderna. Esta vez Antígona se revela contra un dictador latinoamericano (que podría ser el dominicano Trujillo o cualquier otro) y se niega a revelar dónde ha enterrado los cuerpos de sus compañeros de lucha, a pesar de la intervención de su madre, de la mujer del dictador, de un alto cargo eclesiástico o del propio dictador.

Muy buena adaptación latinoamericana. Me encanto, me sentí muy identificada y pude vislumbrar muchas bajadas de línea y cosas interesantes que analizar. Antigona te volvés importante!! Alto mensaje conlleva tu vida.
En mis fotocopias, solo tenía 80 páginas esta obra, asique utilizo las 60 restantes de esta publicación para hablar sobre la adaptación de antigona cubana: antigonon, un contingente épico (si no me equivoco) me gustó muchísimo. Es extraña. Es una recolección de pedazos. Pero aún así creo que se puede ver claramente los conceptos que las unen. Me gusto muchísimo!!

Esta obra es un clásico pero nunca había tenido la oportunidad de leerlo. Con las situaciones que están ocurriendo a nivel internacional, siento que todo el mundo debería leerlo y releerlo. El final es verdaderamente impactante; la resistencia de Antígona, los periodistas, Fernando... Realmente increíble.

Antígona, eres resistencia, libertad, amor. Que mucho aprendí contigo. 🤍

it was fine. it was easy to understand, and like super short i mean i read it in a day. i see the societal critiques it’s trying to make but at the end of the day it is a play, and i think it would’ve been better off as a more detailed novel.

Un drama que incorpora elementos de la tragedia griega de Antígona con la situación que vivieron los estados latinoamericanos durante el siglo XX.

Antígona cae presa por intentar salvar de la humillación unos cadáveres. A través de varias conversaciones que Antígona tiene con su madre, su mejor amiga, el obispo, la primera dama y el dictador Creón, conocemos la inteligencia de un personaje extraordinario y los retos que sufren aquellos que se entregan a la justicia. El coro de la prensa nos muestra cómo se doblega el poder de la información. Además de Antígona los personajes secuendarios están muy bien realizados, el obispo es un personaje lleno de ambigüedades, Creón representa perfectamente la fuerza y el miedo que vienen con el poder, y la primera dama se revela como mucho más que el adorno del dictador. Es de notar, sin embargo, que el principio puede ser confuso, dado que es un texto teatral y no una novela.

Una historia clásica traída a la modernidad, que ahonda en los temas del poder, la justicia, el miedo y el valor, aunque sufra un poco por estar creada para ser representada y no leída.

Excelente- deja mucho que pensar.
Basada en una obra por Luis Rafael Sánchez.
Antígona Pérez es una joven que no se deja manipular por el gobierno, ni por ninguna persona, solo por sus propios principios. Bajo la dictadura de un líder corrupto, Creón (que por cierto es familia de ella) es encarcelada y torturada por haber enterrado los cuerpos de unos rebeldes (personas que estaban en contra de la dictadura de Creón) y ella se niega a decir en donde los enterró.
Ella prefiere morir que ir en contra de sus principios y moral, y vemos que a pesar de que muchas personas tratan de brindarle una manera de salir del lio en el que se encuentra, ella prefiere morir con lealtad y honor.
This is an amazing story of honor and discipline and not subsuming to what other impose, but instead stay true to our convictions and selves, no matter the consequences.

When I first started reading this book, I had no idea it was based on a greek tragedy. It was a great story with a very witty main character. She stayed strong through the end which made me like her even more. I only wished the ending would have been longer. 4stars.
