DNF-30% I loved where this story was going clear up until less than 5 hours of knowing each other they were each confessing their love AND their families were introduced. He all but proposed the next day after their first meeting. I just can't do insta love. It's just stupid. I felt in one chapter the author skipped an entire book of getting to know and fall in love. I just felt cheated of a good read because this story was really interesting. If you don't mind a ridiculously insta love then this book might be for you.

This was like a Cinderella remake for the first 9 chapters, and I almost stopped reading there because the story honestly sounded finished and resolved. They fall in love, get separated and then find each other and confess their love, all within 24 hours.

Everything after Chapter 9 was a long, tangled plot about someone trying to destroy Elle's company. Drake serves as more of a secondary character and the romance doesn't really develop any further. Both are more focused on running their companies, making money and creating the next big thing.

It gets really focused on female empowerment, and I'm all over that, but it got a little repetitive.

Neither virgins. No history on the hero, but the heroine's ex pops up a lot. No separation or doubts once the MCs get together.

This book was an ok read. The plot was interesting but something was missing. I didn't feel the connection between Elle and Drake. In the first 20% of the book everything was rushed, they met, have sex, fell in love, and their families were introduced. This story was more about the heroine, her business, her family and was seriously lacking the romance part.

What I liked about the book : the fact that Elle was a strong, smart and powerful business woman. I also enjoyed the Simpson family.

Will I read the next book in this series? Maybe...

Have read all of her previous series and loved it. Read the beginning of this series in her Christmas novella and could hardly wait for this to come out... But so disappointed now that i have finished. The story is fine but the writing felt rushed... There were typos, she when it should have been he.... The intimate scenes were rushed and awkward. There needed to be more visual details instead of jumping from one crisis to another. Character development was incomplete this was not New York Times best writing material..... I feel the editor dropped the ball here and released this too soon. The layout of characters harming her an jealous where lacking in credibility, as well as the secret service???? They don't break in like that no way and the whole thing was just hard to believe and needed more research..... For the first book introducing ALL these new characters I felt short changed! Hope there is a rewrite before the other books in the series come out and you might want to go to Melody Anne or Ruth Cardello for advice on your romantic scenes. Sorry Kathleen love you but this needs a redo.

Another Phenomenal Success for Kathleen Brooks!!

I received this book as a complimentary copy for an honest review. I fell in love with Kathleen Brooks writing with the Bluegrass series and was very excited to have this opportunity.

How do you follow an amazing series like the Bluegrass series? Well if you are Kathleen Brooks you start what promises to be another amazing series about Strong, Passionate, and Independent Women.

Chosen for Power is the first book in the Women of Power series and introduces you to Ellie Simpson who is CEO of a very prominent company and a powerhouse herself. She meets Drake at a charity masquerade ball and sparks fly. The story is heartwarming, fun, and as with all of Kathleen’s books has some mystery & suspense thrown in so that it keeps you guessing what is next.

I loved this book, and I have a feeling that this will be another series that I’m waiting (somewhat impatiently  ) for the next book to come out each time. There is one scene that got put onto the favorite scene list in a novel (don’t want to give away too much), but let me just say that I know I will be revisiting Ellie and Drakes story the same way I do with only my favorite novels.

Congratulation Kathleen on a wonderful book and I can’t wait for the next chapter.

This was an entertaining enough story. I liked the heroine, Elle, she was a strong business woman. I liked Drake too but would have liked to know more about him, he seemed to be behind the scenes more than with Elle in this story. Not sure I liked the I Love You the day after their one night stand, a bit much to me. The relationship seemed to forced. The chemistry was somewhat there. I think I liked the story of Elle and her business more than the "love story" part of this book. There was a couple of mildly written sex scenes, very mild.

There was lots of dialogue throughout the entire book which was great, I like lots of dialogue.

As for the narration, I like Amy McFadden she does a decent job, everyone has their own distinct voice, and she does try to make the men sound like men. She reads with emotion and that is good too.

I got this free on amazon and 1.99 audible whispersync so it was definitely a good deal!

Cliche

While Kathleen Roberts can be a bit cliche in her writing, her story lines have always been pretty good. This book started out bad and kept going. 20% in and they have met, had life changing sex, and fell in love. Everything was rushed and there wasn't any real depth to the characters. It seemed as if she threw every stereotype in the book. Not a fan of this book and definitely don't recommend it. Instead of focusing on one or two issues and writing about that and letting the story develop naturally it seemed like she shoved every problem she could in. So the characters faced an issue. Ok issue solved. New issue. Issue solved. Over and over so there was no real room to expand. Overall disappointed.

Wonderful..

Love, love, loved this book. The story was simply fabulous, as were the characters. Drake and Elle were such a dynamic couple. Not once were either of them wishy-washy or weak or wimpy. One of the best power couples I’ve ever read about. And, wow, they met at a masquerade party and fell in love immediately. It was just awesome.
Loved her family: Reid, Bree, Allegra, and Mom. Absolutely loved Shirley, that woman was sure lovable and crazy. Loved Jessica (great secretary) and Mary (after a while.)
I loved how she took over Titan. That was sooo funny. Those asinine old men.
And, finally, the bad guys found out that weren’t much when they went up against Drake and Elle. They got their asses kicked, that’s for sure.

i love the idea of Satan's stilettoes, women love them even they played as devil.

it is all about alpha female, and women are strong, clever and good but we all do have the warm heart.

Elle and Drake, Drake plays great role in Elle's life, i really enjoy their press conference, Drake leads the game and shown he is an alpha too.

family should be like this, turst, support each other and being closed. i do enjoy this and can't wait for reading the rest of two.

Awesome

Elle overcame not coming from money, went to private school and became best friends with a trust fund girl. Her dad started small but grew the company and he passed, her brother did want to so she did and expanded globally. But with that comes back stabbing. She goes to a masked charity event and finds the man of her dreams, but unfortunately they don't get to exchange name. Drake fell for her honesty, and then her beauty. With a little help from her mom. Will love come to these two.

Could really tell that this 4 book series was all planned out before she began. The next 3 couples are all foreshadowed in this book.

I kinda felt that Drake, as a CEO, was diminished just to make sure Elle looked like a great CEO. But I liked that he gave her the space she needed to be HER, which of course created it’s own tension.

3.5 stars but giving it the benefit since i still greatly enjoyed it. Though it goes in the win column for a freebie it definitely could have used some extra work.
Heroine: She was tough and smart but with a softer side. Strong but vulnerable. In short she was everything I could want out of a heroine. Her hangups were realistic and made me identify with her but at the same time she didn't let them get in the way of something better which i wish more people would try.
Hero: he was interesting though not really a favorite. He was very sweet with the heroine and i loved that he was willing to admit when he made a mistake and worked hard to fix it. However he was a bit on the wimpy side for my tastes. I'm all for a warrior woman and maybe it makes me a bad feminist, but the hero loses a little something when the heroine has to come to his rescue during his attempt to protect her. IRL i can save myself and don't need a prince charming but let's face it who wants real life to intrude on their fiction world? I accept that what I read is wholly different in some aspects than who i am and this is just another one that goes on my list. I liked him but...i just wanted him to be more manly.
Romance: yikes! i mean love at first sight i don't like but can live with. This was like...love at first boink? and it made my head spin. like if someone dropped the L word that fast with me I would run away so fast there would be a cartoon dust trail behind me. I did like the couple together but I felt like we would have benefited from more courting rather than 0 to 60 in one orgasm.
Sex scenes: not terribly memorable. I don't have anything negative to say about them but i also can't really think of anything good to say about them either. They happen often enough but sort of fade into the background with all the other more interesting stuff going on.
Plot: Holy moly there was alot going on here and while in the end it converged there seemed to be a whole lot of unnecessary stuff going on. For instance, the whole 1st chapter (prologue) served literally no purpose. We don't get to see how anybody else became friends with the heroine so why does the M one (Mallory? seriously there are way too many people in this book) get a whole chapter showing how they met? There were other chapters like this too, they seemed to just be in stasis not really moving the story forward and cutting these out could have really tidied it up and made it an better read. Like the red herring of the whodunnit just bogged down the story. This wasn't really a mystery so trying to make you decide who was behind everything was kind of silly. I feel like these chapters wouldve been better spent developing the motives of the villain(s) which i felt were utterly lacking to be taking it as far as it went. I mean corporate espionage ok but all the others. It got a little insane and i didn't really believe that the villain would go through so much trouble based on what we knew about them (grammatically incorrect i know but i'm really trying not to give out spoilers). I did like that the author took what is at least for me a novel approach and made the characters equals in the business world though thankfully not competitors. .
Writing: overall not bad though i did notice inconsistencies, even within the same paragraph. Like the heroine took over the business when her father died when she was 25. Then several sentences later she took it over straight out of college at 23? And seriously what color was her hair pick one-blonde or red. I don't care either way but it's annoying to try and figure out if the author is talking about someone totally different because no one can agree on her hair color. I believe there were typos but none so egregious that they annoyed me. I did get an overall feeling that this book was rather unpolished and could have used a bit more work on both the editing and writing sides. She did exceed however at perfectly mixing humorous and serious tones. I was giggling through most of the book and gasping at most of the rest.

Bottom line: Though i feel like this could've used more work and was a bit busy with all the things and people going on in it i did really enjoy reading it. I will hold on to it and I'd definitely recommend it. I will keep my eye on this author. Right now I have so many free books i dont really want to invest money into more but when i'm done with all these who knows

The Simpson family has not always been this wealthy as the children grew up in a middle-class environment. The parents gave education top priority and all the children attend the best schools. An inspired, determined, and united effort got Simpson Global off the ground. A hard but fair approach to clients, competitors, and employees insured success. The practice of recognizing, promoting, and rewarding their employees, ensures trust and undying loyalty. Being beautiful, powerful, and mega-rich also has its downside; being on the top of the corporate world, left little time for social niceties and relationships, not to mention the true motivations of any potential suitors.
Philanthropy is a necessary act for any large company; giving something back for the power and profits earned. The Drake Charles Foundation Ball is sponsoring a fundraiser for a local Atlanta hospital. The anonymity of such an event could provide her with a chance to let her hair down and actually enjoy herself. Hiding behind a mask can be very liberating.
Drake Charles, the CEO of DCE, a high-tech communication company was sponsoring the benefit ball. Like Elle, Drake lived as a self-imposed recluse for the same reasons. He too was hoping for the freedom to discover a mate that is not influenced by his money and social position. When the two meet, magic occurs and a union is made.

This is the first book of the Women in Power series. It is a vanilla-white romance that takes a unique and refreshing approach to an old, well-used theme. Identity theft, hostile takeovers, and even an assignation threat add enough turmoil to keep the reader interested. I enjoyed the characters and how they interacted with each other. Thankfully inferiority complexes, insecurities, and petty jealousies didn’t muddy the waters. This is a romantic mystery that is sure to please the masses.

As Generic as They Come

A series of books about strong professional women finding love should be a can't miss crowd pleaser, right? Unfortunately, what this book features is a driven female CEO - Who nonetheless sits at home in her pajamas and bunny slippers, sating her lack of a man with ice cream. When she takes a flyer by going to a masquerade in a sexy dress and a mask, and meets a sexy gentleman in a suit and mask, and has sex with him before the end of the evening a la a sexed-up Cinderella? Of course the mask gentleman would turn out to be the reclusive billionaire that nobody knows, who is nonetheless hunky as all get out, and who is naturally head over heels in love with her from their one masked meeting! Oh, and did I mention that despite the fact that they're both richer than god now, they come from working class backgrounds and had to work their way up in both cases…?

The story might've flown if the characters were compelling or the writing was fun – but it's not in either case. All the main characters feel like they come straight out of Central Casting, the non-romance novel plot (about a hostile takeover led by the heroine's slimy - and sexist! - ex-boyfriend) reads like a Hallmark Channel Original Movie, and the writing, while functional, doesn't aspire to much more than that.

I got this on Bookbub, so at least I didn't end up having to pay a lot for it. It gets two stars rather than one because it's a nice enough romance - I've just seen it all before.

The synopsis sounded great and I couldn't wait to dig in. The beginning started off promising. I almost thought it was going to be somewhat of a cinderella story. Well, it kinda was but that only lasted like one chapter. Drake found out who is mystery woman was within the first 20% and dare I may say, they were in LOVE... This surpassses that insta love connections.. This was...... How do I explain my reaction... Made me think a few chapters were left out...I had to ask myself, "Did I miss something?" But I didn't.

The answer is NO to everything you would want in a story except for one thing.....
There was no:
Character development
Connection amongst any characters
Humor
Depth
Story development
Etc.

It did have: a possible good story line with a twist.

One breath, the scene was here..... another breath, the scene was somehwere else..possibly with another POV. This was pretty fast pace. You didn't get to know anyone or anything.. Just that Elle was a powerful woman and someone wanted her to be brought down. oh, and Drake was pretty powerful himself.

The story had potential but you just don't get to know the characters AT ALL!!! Have i mentioned that yet???

Though it had potential, I wouldn't waste my time.

This book started out so promising!!

All Elle wanted was to flirt, mingle, and have dinner with someone. She sort of did that if you can substitute dinner with sex. I have nothing against one night stands, thats not the problem. Nor is searching someone out after a cinderella exit. My problem was the instalove and it's time lapse. Not even a full 24 hours and they're confessing love.

Now I understand that women can be used for money just like men can. I understand that some people just want to love and be loved. This started out with wishes and fantasies and I don't know how it ended. Because i couldn't get through it all. It progressed so fast in the beginning that it felt that it should have ended exactly where i stopped.

What I did read was cute, yes, but so unbelievable. It is a childrens dream but for adults. I could probably finish this, but what would it do for my sanity!?

YES, I see another HIT series in her future. Kathleen knocked this romantic mystery out of the park. This story will give women strength EVERYONE. There is no such thing as a "mans" world. I took the phrase and embraced it "women of power". Although, little jealousy can go a very long way.

There were times when I thought the mystery lady was someone else. Elle held her ground and proved that family does stick together. She never showed fear or defeat. Never allowed her past to justify her furture. Her and Drake are the NEW powerhouse couple but the fame and status came at a cost that almost proved to be too great.

I was pulled in by the passion but grew strength from the leadership and guidance Elle showed when dealing with the haters.

I love the bluegrass series so I was excited when this came out. Unfortunately I could not get in to this at all. I almost quit reading half way through but I'm a firm believer in finishing books even if I don't like them, and I know that Kathleen Brooks can write great stories. I'm glad I kept reading because I liked the 2nd half better. I think it was the repeated harping on how much they loved each other with so little other action that turned me off in the first half. Something about the writing style lost me as well, can't put a finger on what exactly it was though. I don't plan on continuing this series, I'll stick with the bluegrass books.

I loved the Bluegrass series and was looking forward to starting this series but sadly it fell short. The book felt like it was written by a different author. It didn't like the characters, the "love" was way too fast and unbelievable and the writing just droned on and on without really going anywhere. The action was rushed and again unbelievable. Seriously, secret service busting the door down over an email almost made me toss my kindle on the floor and call it quits. The ending felt like it should have been the first chapter of the next book. Why? Why rush that character storyline at the end of this book?

I liked the story line and the characters but not the writing style. I don't need to know that - her assistant brought 5 pints of double chocolate brownie and 5 spoons, one for each of the 5 people. Or that -she opened the bottom drawer to pick her pink and white flannel pajama pants, and then she opened her top drawer to find a matching white tank top. Just tell me they ate ice cream, and she put on jammies. Might try one more book since she's supposed to be a bestselling author.

I have been reading a lot of books from Kathleen Brooks , and it has intrigued in me ways on how she evolves character sketches of female protagonists and depicts adventure, thrill, romance and a mince of happy endings.

This is the first book of the Women in Power series. It is a vanilla-white romance that takes a unique and refreshing approach to an old, well-used theme. Identity theft, hostile takeovers, and even an assignation threat add enough turmoil to keep the reader interested. I enjoyed the characters and how they interacted with each other. Thankfully inferiority complexes, insecurities, and petty jealousies didn’t muddy the waters. This is a romantic mystery that is sure to please the masses. Overall a good read!
